Second Sunday of Easter (1891)

John 20:19-31 Since ancient times one has considered the celebration of this Sunday as a belated celebration of holy Easter, as the first part of the text for today puts us once again on the evening of the day when first was heard in the early morning for the first time: "He is risen!" That's a sweet Easter greeting in return that our text includes and a happy greeting in which Christ, the risen Savior, applies: "My Lord and My God!": The faithful return greeting to their resurrected Savior's greeting of peace. We consider 1. the greeting of the risen Savior: "Peace be with you!" a. without the Risen One there is no peace, but discord, fear and trembling: fear for the sake of our sins; trembling before our enemies1, b. But Jesus has purchased our peace, redeemed our sins, and overcome our enemies because He fought, worked, suffered and died for us2, c. He also distributes His own peace and its glorious fruits; His greeting of peace, which He Himself once brought to the disciples, goes on and on through this poor, battle-filled, peace-less world and is powerful and effective, making "delighted disciples"3 even today through the office that He has given His Church4, and whoever will not partake of peace remains in discord here and in eternity.5 Oh, a beautiful, an important greeting in the Name of the risen Savior: "Peace be with you!" 2. the return greeting of the faithful: "My Lord and my God!" a. what this greeting says. . He speaks to Jesus, He who bears the nail marks and the wounded side in Himself, the One who died and rose again, as Lord and God. There is a recognition of His person, that the man Jesus is God over all things, blessed forever, and a recognition of His office and work, that salvation is in no other than in Him, the Crucified and Risen One, who has redeemed us to God with His blood, has made peace between us and God, and now brings peace to poor sinners and gives it to enjoy.6 . He says to Jesus: "My Lord and my God." This is the appropriation of salvation in Christ that he pronounces, the confidence upon Christ, in which we now have a God, a gracious God, through Whom we are again

reunited with God, are also partakers and enjoy peace with God that is purchased for the whole world7, b. it is a greeting of the faithful. . the unbeliever, the doubter, does not greet the Risen One in this way, he cannot and will not and is thereby an unblessed man who lives in the world without God. And if he will not sound, "My Lord and My God" with we Christians in the heart and from the lips in temptation, in distress and tribulation, because he has the same reason: we want to see, we lack faith,8 . but the Word of Christ works faith in Christ, the Son of God; this makes lives, this saves in Christ Jesus, our Lord and God. Therefore, what we lack, where Thomas lacked, towards the congregation of God, where Jesus is with His Word9, towards the Word of Scripture10; then it will bless us and cheerfully sound in our hearts and lips: "My Lord and my God."
