Welcome to ATLAS.ti 6.1
This document is not intended to be used as a guide to ATLAS.ti. For learning ATLAS.ti and for productive work please consult the following resources: The full manual ATLMAN.PDF. This is available after installation from ATLAS.ti's Help menu. If you did not install the manual, you will find it in the DOCS folder of the CD. Note, this manual is a bit outdated. Additional information is available as separate documents. However, the main concepts and workflows still hold for this version, too. The Quick Tour should be installed and available and you can launch it via the shortcuts in the Scientific Software folder from the Windows Start menu. You can also find it in the Docs folder of the CD and on the web site. The Online Help is available via F1 when running ATLAS.ti. It closely resembles the full manual and you use the powerful search features offered by the Help system.

System Requirements
An Intel based PC or a Apple Macintosh with BootCamp or Parallels and 1 GB minimal RAM are needed. Of course, the more processing power and the more RAM you have, the better! ATLAS.ti 5 runs fine on Windows XP and Vista. Window 9x, Me and Windows 2000 are not supported anymore.

Installation
This release can be used to install a fresh copy of ATLAS.ti 6.1. It may also be used to upgrade a previously installed version of ATLAS.ti. Attention: If you have modified any of the sample files in folder SAMPLES, XML or HTML, you need to store them in a safe place before starting the upgrade. Even better: use Copy Bundle to pack each of your modified sample projects to create a backup. Takes less space, creates a single file, and will not be overwritten. If you are updating a network installation, make sure to also run the client setup on all workstations. If shortcuts are not updated correctly on the client, choose Refresh Client from the list of shortcuts in the Windows Programs menu folder Scientific Software available from the taskbar. Read the netinst.pdf manual, located in the Docs folder on the CD, before doing a LAN-aware installation of ATLAS.ti.

Service Packs
Once in a while we upload a so called service pack which updates your current version in order to implement new and improved functions or to remove unwanted "bugs". The Service Pack Manager (under the Tools menu) has a live update facility which makes it easy to check for up-to-the-minute updates once in a while. It connects to our download server,

and checks, delivers and installs any updates applicable for your version of ATLAS.ti. By default, automatic checking for updates is active and should be left on unless you experience access problems.

Selection of Features in ATLAS.ti 6.1

Mixed Teams Interoperability The compatibility mode encourages exchanging projects between A5 and A6 users. Usually, projects are upward compatible, e.g., a HU created with A5 can be opened with A6 but not vice versa. Now, an A6 user can store a HU in "A5 compatibility mode". Such a HU can be loaded by version 5.6 users. Native PDF Support The de facto standard in document representation and exchange is PDF. Usually PDF files cannot be utilized in other software other than by converting its content while loosing an essential property of PDF files their layout. A6 offers full native support without conversion and while keeping its layout intact. You know what this means? Not less than being able to analyze everything. Web pages. PowerPoint presentations. Blogs. Designs. Google Earth PDs What is the combination between the most powerful QDA package and the most joyful GIS package? It is addictive and it is ATLAS.ti 6. Create locative quotations, link them to their mentioning in the text. Create snap shot graphic PDs from satellite view to persist their current map data. Click the image and get back to the location to see how it looks today. Associated Documents & Transcription Some documents are implicitly associated, e.g. by their time dimension. Textual transcripts and their media source, an audio or video document. With A6 you can now create such associations either by setting anchor points manually or by importing from F4, a well known transcription package. In Karaoke mode you can play both documents synchronously. You can select text and play the corresponding audio or video section. MultiPage Image Support Until now, multi page images (mostly TIFF) could be loaded and coded. However, only the first page was recognized. Now, you can have as many pages in one image file as you need. Such monsters are usually produced by batch scanning multi page documents. You can even analyze animated GIFs frame by frame!-) New Looks Toolbars now look a bit more prettier, tool icons from 10 years ago have been finally replaced. Same with object images displayed in the margin, the managers, everywhere. You can even select your personal toolbar color. And many other improvements and fixes Creating super codes the simple way by selecting groups of codes and families in the Code Manager and Network Editor.
