WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE WHEN

MOST PEOPLE CHOOSE TO CYCLE?
In 1900, the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) boasted a membership of 100,000. That same year US car companies produced fewer than 4200 vehicles: 1681 steam, 1575 electric and 936 gasoline. Can you imagine a world where the bicycle wins the Peoples Choice Award every day? This summer were inviting cyclists like you to h elp us d emonstrate what the world looks like when most folks are riding a bike. Therell be fun, games and knowledge exchange. Workshops on rural cycling safety, cycle-touring, and bike economics. Guided rides, bike-powered film, musical & spoken word performances, photo exhibits, art shows and auctions, cycling d emonstrations, even a one- day C ycling and Rural Mobility conference. All of this a nd a beautiful island environment to explore!

Salt Springs winding, often shoulderless, and relatively traffic-free roads make for great cycling. Still, unfamiliar terrain and non-conforming rural roads introduce new risks for visiting cyclists and motorists b oth. A single piece of advice? Please share the road. Motorists can drive a bit slower; Cyclists can ride single file. When we all respect the rules of the road everyone b enefits!

HOMESTAY BILLETS: Were still looking to billet several of the Cycling and Rural Mobility Conference speakers. SALT SPRING: THE MOST WELCOMING PLACE ON THE PLANET TO BE ON A BIKE

Some p eople have asked us what we mean by Bicycle-Heaven-On-Earth. They point out that Salt Spring isnt without its hills, weve got our share of blind corners and there are no b ike lanes. Simply put, our island looks a lot like most other rural areas a beautiful place to ride with little or no infrastructure to support cyclists or cycling activities. This is the Velo Village point-of-departure. For us, bicycle-heaven-on- earth is a 72-hour long glimpse into the future. Well be a place where cycling is everywhere in the a ir! Specifically, a place where Islanders greet cyclists with waves, d iscounts and h ospitality families use b ikes to generate p ower for projectors and sound s ystems decorated cycling routes enable safe, easy, and fun transit from A to B like-minded p eople share solutions to rural cycling challenges dedicated services such as the BIKE FERRY and amenities like the 1000- bike parking facility are part of the transportation mix bikes & b ike parts are transformed into artistic expressions of an Island- wide cycling culture where active transportation thrives because cyclists, motorists and pedestrians respect & understand each others needs and requirements

During his two years in Kenya, World Bicycle Relief Chief Operating Officer, Micheal Kollins, was regularly impressed by the pivotal role of the bicycle as a tool for personal and community development. This is what hell be focusing on when h e speaks to the Power of Bicycles in Sub Saharan Africa at the Cycling and Rural Mobility Conference, June 22nd: http://velovillage.ca/conference/.
