Problem Description
Import a parasolid file containing five 3D unmeshed parts: two
plates to be tightened by three bolts Define all parts as 3D deformable bodies. Create a contact table to indicate a contact body pair between each bolt and each plate and between the two plates. Define 3D bolts Perform an implicit nonlinear analysis Evaluate the results

Open MSC SimXpert Structures. a. Click on Structures.

Set units to mm, kg, s a. Tools / Options/ Options Editor. b. Select Units Manager. c. Click on Standard Units. d. Scroll down and select the line with units mm, kg, s. e. Click OK.

Set Parasolid import options. a. Select Parasolid under the I/O Options branch b. Check Create a part for each body when importing a subassembly c. Click OK

Create a Material. a. In the Model Browser, right click Material / New Material b. Enter Material Name steel. c. Enter value for Youngs Modulus 2e8. d. Enter value for Poissons Ratio 0.3. e. Click Ok.

Create a Property for Solid Elements a. In the Model Browser, right click Property / New Property b. Select 3D for Property Category and Simple for Property Group. c. Select Property Type as Linear Solid. d. Check the MID checkbox then click in the text box e. Select steel from the Model Browser. f. Click Ok.

Apply Properties and rename parts. a. Double Click on Part P1 in Model Browser under ASSY2. b. Change the Title (part name) to plate_bottom c. Click Modify. d. Repeat steps a thru c for the remaining parts: P2, P3, P4, P5 renaming them plate_top, bolt_1, bolt_3 and bolt_2, respectively. e. Click Exit

Create a Solid Mesh for the plates. a. Select FE Modeling / Mesh / Create / On Part b. Pull down Mesh Type Solid. c. Click in the Body to Mesh text box and select the top and bottom plates by picking them in the window d. Enter 100 for element size. e. Click in the Element Property text box and select the property PSOLID_1 from the Model Browser f. Select Quadratic. g. Click Apply.

Create a finer mesh on the bolts. a. Click in the Body to Mesh text box and select the 3 bolts by picking them in the window. b. Enter 50 for Element Size. c. Make sure the Element Property text box still lists PSOLID_1 and that Quadratic is still selected. d. Click OK.

Create 3D Deformable Bodies. If the Contact toolbox is not displayed, right click next to the toolboxes and make sure Contact is checked. a. Select Contact / Deformable / Deformable Solid. b. On the pick panel, select Part(s) for 3D. c. Enter Contact Body Name Bottom_Plate. d. Select plate_bottom from the model browser. e. Click Create. f. Repeat steps a thru e for:

Define 7 Possible Contact Body Pairs. a. Select Contact / Contact Table / BCTABLE. b. Select Deact. Diagonal to eliminate self-contact. c. Since the bolts will not come into contact with each other, in row 1 (bolt_1) clear columns 2 and 3 by repeatedly clicking in each box until it is blank. In row 2 (bolt_2) clear column 3 by clicking in the box until it is blank. d. Click Create. e. Click Exit.

Apply Constraints. a. In the Model Browser, right click LBC / New LBC b. For BC Type select SPC BC c. For BC Sub-Type select SPC1 d. Uncheck Dof 4, Dof 5, and Dof 6. e. Click in the Pick Entities text box f. Change the pick filter to Surfaces on the General Picking toolbar. g. Select the outer faces of both the top and bottom plates. h. Click Ok.

Create 3D Bolts with a 5 unit preload. a.Select Utilities / Bolt Model / Create / 3D. b.Enter 5 for displacement. c.Select Parts. d.Select bolt_1 from the Model Browser tree under ASSY2. e.Click Done. f.Repeat steps d and e for bolt_2 and bolt_3. g.As the bolts are created, a local coordinate system is displayed on the part. h.Click Exit.

Specify analysis parameters. a. Expand Analysis as necessary. b. Right click on Nastran Jobs and click Create New Job. c. Enter 3D_Bolt as the Job Name. d. Select Implicit NonLinear (SOL600). e. Click OK.

Specify analysis parameters (continued). f. Right click Cases and select Add Subcase. g. Select DefaultLbcSet under Select LBC Set. h. Click OK.

Specify analysis parameters (continued). i. Right click on Subcase DefaultLbcSet and select Select Contact Table. j. Select BCTABLE_1. k. Click Ok.

Run Analysis a. Right click on 3D_Bolt, select Run. b. Select a location for the analysis input file. Give it the name 3D_Bolt c. Click Save.

Attach the .xdb file to access the analysis results. a. Select File/Attach Results / Results Entities. b. Navigate to and select the file 3d_bolt.xdb c. Click Open.

Deformation Fringe Plot. a. Select Result/State Plot. b. Select Plot Type Fringe. c. Select Results Case Time = 1. d. Select Results Type Displacements, Translational. e. Select Derivation Magnitude. f. Click Update to generate a Fringe Plot showing deformation concentrated in the bolts. g. In order to be able to see the fringe plot clearly turn off all Geometry and Boundary Conditions h. Click Clear when finished. i. Turn off 3D elements.

Generate a Stress Fringe Plot a. Change Result type to Stress Tensor. b. Derivation: von Mises c. Click Update.

Clip the model to show the stresses inside the bolt. a. Select Utilities / Model Clipping. b. Select XYZ on the Pick Panel as the method to enter 3 points to define a clipping plane. c. Enter 0 0 0. d. Click OK. e. Now enter: 0 0 1 click OK 0 1 1 click OK f. Enter Incremental Distance: 100 for the amount to translate the plane g. Click OK. h. Click Add. i. Click Sub.
