Re-writing the West of Shetland Record Book

Through deployment of new innovative technologies

ICoTA Round Table Nov 18th-19th 2009 Jasper Naylor - BP / Andy Skinner - Red Spider

Setting the Scene

Foinaven Field, West Of Shetland
BP Operated (72% BP / 28% Marathon) Subsea 400m - 530m Harsh environment in remote location Transocean Rather Semi Submersible Increasing cost challenge Strong focus on Tech Limit process

Well P16 side track candidate

On-line 1996 Increasing water cut

P16z Sidetrack
Completed away from advancing W16 waterfront 550m Up-Dip of existing wellbore Existing upper completion tubing cut above packer and pulled Whipstock set in 9 5/8 casing and window milled 8 Sidetrack to TD

Re-completion
New Lower & Upper completion installed

Typical De-completion Steps

Pull Tree Cap Deploy EDP/LRP & DBR Bullhead tubing contents with sea water and pill RU slick-line and PCE Make drift run with slick-line to below plug setting depth RIH deep set plug on slick-line and set below completion packer Test plug to 4000psi. RIH with tubing punch on slick line and punch tubing below gauge mandrel Displace well to inhibited brine by straight circulation and pass returns through vent down package and filtration unit. RIH JRC tubing cutter and cut tubing above punch depth. RIH 4.875 QX plug on slick-line and set in tubing hanger. Test plug to 5000psi. RU slick-line on annulus and install 1.937 QX plug. Test plug to 5000psi. RD slick-line and PCE Recover DBR, EDP/LRP and Xmas Tree Run production flow-line and annulus pressure caps. Run BOP and Marine Riser Test BOP connection to 5000psi Run THROT/THOJ on DBR and surface tree and latch on to tubing hanger RU slick line & PCE on production bore and retrieve 4.875 QX plug. RU slick line on annulus bore and retrieve 1.937 QX plug. Close upper annular and unseat tubing hanger Circulate out gas pocket below hanger with returns passed through choke manifold LD Surface Tree, Open annular and POOH DBR, THROT/THOJ with tubing hanger and completion tubing.

Optimized De-completion Steps w/ hRED

Skid Rig from W17 to P16 Well Handover Pull Tree Cap Deploy EDP/LRP & DBR Bullhead tubing contents with sea water and pill RU slick-line and PCE Make drift run with slick-line to below plug setting depth RIH Omega plug on slick-line and set below completion packer Test plug to 3600psi. RIH Schlumberger Power Cutter on slick-line to +/- 2260m and cut tubing. Displace well to inhibited brine by straight circulation and pass returns through vent down package and filtration unit. RIH 4.875 QX plug with Hydraulic RED valve on slick-line and set in tubing hanger. Test plug to 5000psi. RU slick-line on annulus and install 1.937 QX plug. Test plug to 5000psi. RD slick-line and PCE Recover DBR, EDP/LRP and Xmas Tree Run production flow-line and annulus pressure caps. Run BOP and Marine Riser Test BOP connection to 5000psi Run THERT on drill pipe and latch on to tubing hanger Pressure string to Hydraulic RED opening window for 10 minutes to open valve Close upper annular and unseat tubing hanger Circulate out gas pocket below hanger with returns passed through choke manifold Open annular and POOH THERT with tubing hanger and completion tubing on drill pipe.

Hydraulic RED Benefits

1. 24hrs rig time saved vs running DBR 2. Contributed to fastest Foinaven De-completion 3. Reduced HSE exposure 4. Reduced exposure to weather (15 days)

P16z Completion eRED

eRED installed in tubing hanger onshore (Open position) Upper completion run, packer set / tested > close eRED. Pull BOPs, run tree > open eRED Note: Added open from below option Confirm no pressure below, pull eRED and annulus filter sub Open Hole (no PCE)
Pre-Installed eRED and Annulus Filter Sub in Tubing Hanger Before & After ROV Clean-UP

Electronic RED Benefits

1. Slickline runs cut from 8 to 2! 2. 12hrs rig time saved 3. Reduced POB requirements, HSE & weather exposure 4. Contributed to fastest Foinaven completion (14 days)

In Summary
First subsea completion utilising both hRED and eRED technology Selected thanks to Tech Limit initiative within BP D&C team
Elimination / simplification of critical path activities

hRED and eRED helped set new benchmark for Foinaven completion activity A measured risk rather than a gamble
i.e. potential loss = 6hrs / potential gain = 24hrs

Exact same eRED optimization employed on the PBLJ rig 30 days later and resulted in same time savings The RED family of products allowed us to find a new way of working, with increased efficiency and reduced risk exposure.
