Honour Attacks and Killings Some major questions: 1. Are honour killings part and parcel of Islam or an aberration?

2. Where are the verses in the Quran about this? 3. What is it that drives people to kill their own children? 4. Why does the news report on this as domestic violence and not honor killings? 5. What can be done? On December 11, 2011 the Ottawa Citizen reported on an interview with a Muslim imam, Samy Metwally who asserted that honor killings and Islam have nothing to do with each other. He stated: Whats called honour killing is not part of Islamic teaching or tradition, and in fact there is no honour in this killing at all.1 However in 2010 a report was released by Phyllis Chesler an emerita professor of psychology and women's studies at the Richmond College of the City University of New York and co-founder of the Association for Women in Psychology and the National Women's Health Network. The study analyzed 172 incidents and 230 honor-killing victims from 29 countries between 1989 and 2009. The study concluded:
Although Sikhs and Hindus do sometimes commit such murders, honor killings, both worldwide and in the West, are mainly Muslim-on-Muslim crimes. In this study, worldwide, 91 percent of perpetrators were Muslims. 2

On December 3rd, 2011, the BBC News released a report entitled 'Honour' attack numbers revealed by UK police forces and it showed that the UK police recorded at least 2,823 so-called honour attacks last year. Athough Islam is not mentioned, the ethnic groups (Iranian and Kurdish) mentioned would suggest that a number of these attacks were of Islamic background.3 In Islam: 1. Major premise: You are the best of people Q. 3:110 Arberry You are the best nation ever brought forth to men, bidding to honour, and forbidding dishonour, and believing in God. Had the People of the Book believed, it were better for them; some of them are believers, but the most of them are ungodly. Yusuf Ali Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, for-bidding what is wrong, and believing in God. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors. This attitude of supremacy can be found in other Quranic verses such as:

"If you are Muslims, then you will have dominance and power." (3:139) 2. Major premise: The unity of the umaah must be preserved at all costs Q 30:32 "Be not among the Mushrikun i.e., those who create differences in Deen (Islam) and become sects. Each (sectarian) party is quite content with itself (that it is following the correct path)." (30:32) "And those who create division in Deen (Islam) and become divided into sects, O Prophet (PBUH)! You have no part in them in the least." (6:159) In 2003 Al-Jazeera reported that the Jordanian Parliament voted down a legal provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. The provision was introduced because Murder cases carry stiff penalties in Jordan, but honour killers usually receive reduced sentences since their crimes are considered to be committed in fits of rage or as a crime of passion, sparked by unlawful action on the part of the victim. In spite of demonstrations by womens groups, the provision was struck down because "Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values." 4 Headline from November 16, 2011 "Jordan: Man cuts sister throat to cleanse family honour," from ANSAmed Actions which would appear to jeopardize the unity of the ummah and its perception as being the best among all people, including appearance of moral laxity, warming up to infidels and their values need to be rooted out vigorously and the person can be declared a non-person. A hadith says:
3.

"Anyone who gets even one feet away from the Ummah has taken out the Islamic yoke from his neck, even if he prays and fasts." From the Chesler study: Finally, worldwide, 58 percent of the victims were murdered for being "too Western" and/or for resisting or disobeying cultural and religious expectations (see Table 1). The accusation of being "too Western" was the exact language used by the perpetrator or perpetrators. Being "too Western" meant being seen as too independent, not subservient enough, refusing to wear varieties of Islamic clothing (including forms of the veil), wanting an advanced education and a career, having non-Muslim (or non-Sikh or non-Hindu) friends or boyfriends, refusing to marry one's first cousin, wanting to choose one's own husband, choosing a socially "inferior" or non-Muslim (or non-Sikh or non-Hindu) husband; or leaving an abusive husband. Closer to home Aqsa Parvez who was brutally murdered by her father and brother in December 2007 for refusing to wear the Islamic headscarf was buried in an unmarked grave and the family refused to acknowledge her life, as she had dishonored them. detailed in Pamela Gellers recent book, Stop the Islamization of America A Practical Guide to the Resistance. (Washington, DC: WND Books, 2011) 4. The preservation of family honor, the Ummahs honor, and societal honor are values which are stronger in some cultures than others. This is especially true of Arabic culture. There is a precedent from the Sunah (life and actions of Muhammad) in which he reacted very strongly whenever anyone would jeopardize his honor. Any poet who wrote verses that questioned his prophethood was killed in cold blood. They are named in the Sirah (biography of Muhammad) Al-Nadr bin al-Harith, Uqba bin Abu Muayt, Asma bint Marwan, Abu Afak etc. http://answering-islam.org/Authors/Arlandson/dead_poets.htm 5. The Quran suggests that insulting either God or his messenger would incur punishment both in this life and in the hereafter. Q: 33:57-58 33:57 Those who insult [aa-dh-aa] God and His Messenger will be rejected by God in this world and the nextHe has prepared a humiliating punishment for them 58 and those who undeservedly insult [aa-dh-aa] believing men and women will bear the guilt of slander and obvious sin. (Haleem) 6. Punishment can be meted out today by Muslims who want to preserve the honor of God and Muhammad with limited recrimination in Islamic societies. Diana Nammi of the Kurdish Womens Rights Organization told the BBC: "The perpetrators will be even considered as a hero within the community because he is the one defending the family and community's honour and reputation." A manual of Islamic law certified as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy by Al-Azhar University, the most respected authority in Sunni Islam, says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right." However, "not subject to retaliation" is "a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring." ('Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2). In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law. 7. The act of not exercising an honor-killing can call for recrimination as well. "Refusing to Kill Daughter [in an honour killing] , Pakistani Family Defies Tradition, Draws Anger," The Atlantic, 28 September 2011 (this headline refers to a young lady who was gang-raped and whose family refused to kill her to preserve the societal honor.) 8. Following the example of Muhammad just after he emigrated from Mecca to Medina is important to understand the relationship of Muslims to non-Muslims when they are in the minority. They are to form a distinct and separate society for Muhammad was reported to sayMigration cannot be ended as long as there is kufr (unbelief) or as long as there is an enemy that resists (kenz al Umal 46274) Hadith number 2645 as reported by Abu Daw'uad, and the same reported by Tirmizi in his manual A-JJamieha as Hadith number 1640, both quote Muhammad as saying: 3

"I am innocent or free of every/any Muslim that lives amongst the Pagans/non-Muslims" Further, Abu Daw'uad reports in Hadith number 2789 that Muhammad had said "whosoever collegiates or aggregates with non-Muslims and lives with them, he is one of them." This was reworded by Al Hakim to say ..do not collegiate with them, for whoeve does is not one of us. (Quotes from pp. 18-19 in Modern Day Trojan Horse by Solomon and Maqdisi) Also see pp. 20-21 on conditions of being a Muslim. 9. The attitude of Muslims to non-Muslim authorities and a non-Muslim population will be to either defy authority outrightly, to appeal to their pity, and to to exercise the use of taqqiya make themselves look good. a. January 27, 2012: Honour Killing Trial: Mohammad Shafia Weeps, Says He Was Loving Father, But Kids Were Cruel Kingston: man accused of killing his three daughters over family honour portrayed himself Thursday as a loving, benevolent and lenient father, even though his children were cruel to him. b. He was not a serious Muslim c. Quoting And whoso doeth good works, whether of male or female, and he (or she) is a believer, such will enter paradise and they will not be wronged the dint in a date-stone. S. 4:124 Pickthall 10. The Islamic view of women. -the value of a woman witness is of that of a man S 2:282 -Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:
Once Allah's Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) on Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that THE MAJORITY of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Allah's Apostle?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion THAN YOU. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not THE EVIDENCE OF TWO WOMEN EQUAL TO THE WITNESS OF ONE MAN?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion." -women are considered property 11. An Islamic view of those who follow non-Islamic ways -non-persons 12. Show me your God and I will tell you why you act the way -a despotic and un-relational God treats his subjects as slaves -he is capricious and will not swear on his own name as to his commitments -people made in Gods image does not exist in Islam -Allah= Your God the Lord vs The LORD your God
