Trend Micro had recently switched from running SQL Server backups locally, to performing network
backups, in order to increase security and offer better system availability. Network backups, however,
typically take longer to perform and can potentially delay Trend Micro’s other overnight backup jobs,
causing them to over-run into the work day. Such delays ultimately could impact Trend Micro’s users by

into Trend Micro’s overnight backup window. “LiteSpeed reduced the time to back up our 35 GB database

In addition to time savings, LiteSpeed helped Trend Micro reduce backup costs. Trend Micro’s use of
LiteSpeed had reduced the size of the SQL Server backups by 80 percent, from 80 GB to 16 GB, enabling
more backup files to be stored as well as reducing backup costs. “We weren’t specifically in need of a
compression solution, as we store our secondary backups to tape off site. However, LiteSpeed’s excellent
compression levels allow us to hold more primary and secondary backups, and to reduce our backup
costs,” added Dalton.

From a disaster recovery perspective, Trend Micro uses LiteSpeed to restore its backups 62 percent faster
than previously, saving up to two hours each time they need to restore a file from backup. “As well as
reducing the time to restore from backup, LiteSpeed provides us with additional restore options,
enabling us to restore from older files if necessary,” said Dalton.

LiteSpeed has reduced the volume of backup network traffic by around 80 percent. “This reduction also
helps to ensure that our business is not affected by poor performance of our users’ critical systems,”
noted Dalton.
