Many parts of Belgium celebrate Carnival, usually with costume parades, par tying and fireworks.The Carnival of Binche (be lgian town) has a history going back to the 14th centur y. The parades are held for the 3 days before Lent. The most important people in the parades are the Gilles, who traditionally go out on Shrove Tuesday and throw blood oranges to the crowds. In 2003, the Carnival of Bin che was recognised as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. What a long name for an award!
