Maximlis pontszm: 40 pont THE PARK A Thistle Hotel The Park's 136 bedrooms are decorated in a fresh country house style. Each one features a trouser press, mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, telephone with voice mail, radio, television with Sky TV, air conditioning/fan and many have a safe, fax and modem points, teletext television and ironing centre. A high security floor provides rooms designated for the female business traveller. There are also four suites and a specially adapted bedroom for disabled guests. The Scrum Sports Bar and Caf offers light refreshments throughout the day and evening and features an eight foot screen, as well as numerous televisions broadcasting Sky Sports, CNN News and MTV music. In the gallery are five smaller areas, each suitable for six people, where different TV programs and sports videos can be viewed. Unrivalled in Cardiff for its conference, exhibition and banqueting facilities, The Park's ten refurbished meeting rooms have natural light and high ceilings, and some have air-conditioning. The largest rooms can each seat 300, whilst five smaller rooms have been specifically designed for boardroom meetings, presentations and private dining. It is a wonderful city, the capital of Wales. I am a bit tired after traveling so far, but I am enjoying myself nevertheless. We attend classical concerts and operas at the concert hall here in town every night. Yesterday it was Carmen, my favorite. I am looking forward to a nature hike tomorrow. The countryside really is lovely! We have been sightseeing every day. I loved the old castle in the middle of town -- it was so spectacular. There are plenty of places to shop, and there are things to do after dark, too. We have been to pubs and clubs every night. Then there is the Welsh language. It certainly looks difficult! I'm glad everyone knows English! I met some fellow Hungarians at one of the pubs. It's amazing to see how we are everywhere. I was also lucky enough to meet some English tourists and practice my language skills. I will write more later, and send pictures! Regards, Attila

According to librarians the number of visitors has increased by 20 per cent recently. There are a lot of readers who don't only borrow thrillers and romantic stories. People who read regularly can be divided into two groups: there are some who find special joy in reading while others only need some information. III. Irnytott fogalmazs. I always catch the most important games on TV, but I must admit that Hungarian teams are not the best. It's been quite a while since we had a world-class team. Of course everybody is well acquainted with the rules. The most important is, of course: no hands! Naturally I enjoy playing the sport, as well. In fact I don't remember when I played my first game, or when this became my favorite sport. It always has been, I guess. One of my earliest and fondest memories is of my father and I going to the park to practice. "Son," he would say, "you've got to keep

your eye on the ball!" I guess the sport, for right or wrong, is intimately tied up in my imagination with manhood. This is, as I said above, the most popular sport in the world, because you need good reflexes, general fitness, a good eye, a quick mind and an all-around competitive spirit. The rules are simple, but play is complicated and unpredictable. It's a great excuse to get out into the open air, get fit and have fun with your friends. I just wish that some people didn't use it as an excuse to fight and act disgracefully. Vagy: II. 11th June, 2000 Dear Pete, Did I ever tell you about the time I saw an eclipse? It was a total eclipse of the sun right here in Hungary! I know that this eclipse was visible in England, too. I read about it first in all the papers, and there was a lot of publicity surrounding it. We were lucky to have wonderful weather here in Hungary. The eclipse was clearly visible, and down here in Simontornya, my village, the sun was totally eclipsed. I heard it was only 75% or so in Budapest. My mum and I bought a pair of special glasses, and we could watch it all from the back patio. Boy, was it spectacular. My mom and I were ecstatic! During totality, we could look directly into the place the sun should be. And there were stars all around, in the middle of the day. It was even more breathtaking than I had imagined. My mother cried. I, of course kept my cool compared to this, but I could sympathise with her reaction. Anyway, there was this sudden, incredibly intense burst of light, like a laser, and the sun was peeking out from behind the moon again. It was just plain amazing to see Mother Nature stand on her head like that. I hear that the next one will be in South Africa. One of my friends said they were heading out there to see it. I don't know...if I bought a plane ticket I'd rather go to England and brush up on my English. Yours, Bogi

Unwanted mothers When will employers learn to treat job applicants who happen to be mothers of young children as they would treat other ordinary people? I wonder how many mothers, like myself, have faced an interviewer who seemed more concerned with potential employees' private life than with their ability to do the job. The job I applied for involved evening work. The man I was talking to was not nosy enough to ask who would care for my child while I worked, but he had the audacity to ask: "Won't your husband mind looking after him?" I doubt if any husbands who go for interviews are asked if their wives are willing to take care of the children five days a week while they work; yet intelligent women must put up with this stupid questioning. My future boss has nothing to do with my private life. Even if he had, a child has two parents and I believe that they should share in his or her upbringing. Only the totally inadequate mother would look for a job without being confident that her children wouldn't suffer by it. Narrow-minded employers should not prevent mothers who are keen on working from getting a job. Megolds IV. Fordts idegen nyelvrl magyarra

Szvegrtst ellenrz feladat Maximlis pontszm: 25 pont Staying in Other People's Houses When a family swapped their Devon home with a French family, they were surprised on return to find their once plump cat a virtual skeleton. "The French family had been feeding the wrong cat," says Mary Spivey, who ran the home-swapping agency responsible for putting the families together. "Since then I've advised people to describe their pets more carefully." An Italian family who swapped with a family in north London did not understand that a couple occupied the top fiat. When they returned, the Italians tackled them, thinking that they were burglars. And an English family who went to stay in a family's house in Utah found that they had left their son behind in his bedroom. Therefore before you make up your mind about swapping with a particular family make quite sure that you will be on your own in the house, too. Nevertheless, homeswapping is gaining popularity as a way of achieving a cheap holiday. Though the various agencies claim that home-swapping is problem free, they will admit that most complaints are about different standards of cleanliness. For instance, Mildred Baer, director of Worldwide Home exchange, says: "A few complaints we have are to do with the level of housekeeping. It is usually the Americans; they can be upset that the British don't believe in steamcleaning their carpets." if you are the sort of person who can't stand people making a mess in your home and you re very proud of how neat and tidy it always looks, then quite frankly house swapping is not for you. You'll be worrying alt the time you are away and you won't enjoy your holiday. Lois Sealey of Home Base Holidays says: 'There are always odd people who find home swapping doesn't come up to their five-star standards. It makes sense to swap with like-minded people, but this isn't always possible." Cultural differences occur, though Pat Staton, an American psychologist who has swapped with three British families, thinks gripes tend to be petty, such as about the 'tiny refrigerators' in this country. Clare Cooper, who swapped her home in London for one in New York, found herself 'irritated' that the swappers hadn't cleaned their home as much as she had hers. The home-swapping agencies' services are broadly similar; the holiday-maker pays a fee to be included in a directory, which goes out to agencies' members. They alt stress home swapping as the thinking person's holiday; an American home swap company, Vacation Services, offers 'cultural enrichment' as a by-product. There has to be some work on the part of the swapper. "It is not a cosy holiday", says Cooper. "You have to work at it and make the effort." Most Britons exchange with householders in the United States, but the phenomenon is becoming more global. Sealey says "Home Base Holidays even had Russian houses on their books last year." Hong Kong,

Tasmania, Togo and Ghana are also among the countries where it is possible to home-swap, and Worldwide Home Exchange has a listing in Sri Lanka. 1. Milyen dlsformrl szl a cikk? (4 pont) 2. Megolds II. Magyar szveg tmrtse idegen nyelven Reading a lot can cost you money on the stock exchange According to a university psychologist in Munich, people who read up on the events of the stock market on a daily basis are less likely to succeed in their investments than those who update themselves less frequently. In his opinion, investors proceed from the mistaken notion that more knowledge is always better, when in fact it can lead to buying and selling in a panic. This is owing to people's natural tendency to overrate the freshest news, a tendency which is aggravated by the media, who cover the story, not the background or the interconnections between the events. People who are not equipped with the latest information daily are better able to see these interconnections and background, says the psychologist, keeping a certain distance from events and putting them in context. He bases his claims on a study involving readers of The Wall Street Journal, in which it was discovered that those who only occasionally read the paper outperform daily readers on their stock market investments. He advises shareholders not to read less, but to remain calm, make long-term plans, show self-control, and avoid panic while reading the paper. III. Irnytott fogalmazs. Maximlis pontszm: 20 pont. Others say that honesty is an outmoded policy, and that nice guys finish last. Of course, neither of these sayings provides us with the complete truth. Society would crumble without a certain level of honesty in every human relation, whether it be financial transaction, family relationships, friendship, or relations with our coworkers. On the other hand, it is not always possible, or even advisable, to tell the whole truth. Personally, I like honest people, and I am honest in all my relationships whenever possible. However, there are some things that are just not anybody else's business, and I don't hesitate to conceal information about those from nosey people. Nor do I think it is wrong to tell a white lie to protect somebody's feelings. Unfortunately, it is easier and easier to encounter lying and cheating for profit these days. If you have some repairs made on your house, then you will immediately see what I mean. It's hard to avoid a rip-off. And it is so in most spheres of activity, including politics, unfortunately. Luckily, none of my family or friends has ever double-crossed me, and I'd feel awful if they did. If I see that someone has been insincere, I always point it out to them in no uncertain terms. Of course, it would be trying to live in a world of totally honest people. We would have to get used to people telling us when we looked awful, or when we were idiots. And perhaps our spouses telling us that they don't love us anymore. But there would be no locks on doors, and there would be no money; a promise would be enough. Vagy: II. Equality of the sexes is an important issue in today's society, a society in which the constitution enshrines equal rights for all, but in which, sadly, we cannot often attain this lofty goal. Certainly, great strides have been made in the area of women's rights. Women have the right to vote, and, at least in theory, to hold any job. More and more women are becoming well educated. In fact, women do better in school. There are plenty of women doctors, and a growing number of women lawyers, for example. Yet many women face tremendous discrimination at work, starting with the interview. It is always the same: a human resources manager is leery of hiring a woman for a career slot, out of fear that she will leave in a short time to have babies. Once the children arrive, it is more of the same: what will happen if her children are ill, and she has so be on sick leave all the time? Perhaps this is one of the reasons that all of the top positions seem to be reserved for men. At home, the situation is even worse: the traditional roles of men and women remain unchanged. After a long day at the office, the wife is still expected to have dinner ready and on the table when the husband arrives with a hale and hearty "Honey, I'm home!" The number of hours worked daily by men pales in comparison with that of women if housework is also included. And yet she must still fit the mythic ideal of the modern woman: slim, trim, beautiful, fresh and mild. I personally don't see why a woman can't take on any job she proves worthy of. There are effective women pilots, soldiers, and presidents. Conversely, there is no reason a man cannot take on his fair share of the work at home; his wife has worked just as hard or harder at the office. Filling the role of the ideal male is no piece of cake, either of course: successful, ambitious, quick-minded and wealthy. This is a bit easier to achieve, of course, if there is a subservient woman helping in the background. IV. Fordts idegen nyelvrl magyarra

Fordtsa magyarra! Maximlis pontszm: 20 pont CAMERAS WILL TAPE CAR CRASHES Smart video cameras that are automatically triggered to save footage of crashes onto computers are to go on trial in a bid to put the brakes on reckless drivers. Video footage of collisions will be automatically recorded to provide evidence about their cause, which could then be used to prosecute motorists. The new cameras work by continuously recording an accident-prone area. Footage is not recorded on tape, but rather stored digitally on a computer that can be either integrated within the camera box or located at a traffic-surveillance centre. The computer stores footage in a loop, re-recording over past scenes until the camera senses a collision. Then, the past five minutes of digitised footage are stored in a separate file that is not recorded over again so it can be used by the police to determine the cause of the accident. The system knows when an accident has happened because it will be linked to computers that monitor traffic flows through sensors buried in the road and adjust the sequence of traffic lights accordingly. Sophisticated software will enable the traffic-light computer to know when there has been an accident, by detecting any dramatic change in the flow of vehicles, and trigger the computer to save the preceding five minutes of footage. The system, due to be tested in London initially, is far more advanced than the police cameras at crossroads which catch drivers jumping red lights. A similar scheme has already been successfully tried in Japan. It uses a crash-sensitive microphone to "listen" for collisions at junctions in Tokyo. Originally designed to allow golfers to study their swing frameby-frame on video by using the sound of the club striking the ball as a trigger, it stores a before-and-after sequence whenever the sound of crunching metal is detected. Maximlis pontszm: 25 pont So who wants to marry a perk? If marriage is so wonderful, why is the prime suspect in any murder case always the spouse? The entire legal machine, from the highest judge to the lowliest plod, knows that a spouse never needs a motive. The bare fact that they were married to the victim is motive enough. Nobody has better reasons for killing you than the person who loves you most. This rule applies equally to couples who live together, without the benefit of bell, book and candle. Similarly, people who live "in sin" will assure you a split is just as painful without a piece of paper or the legal palaver of a divorce. Living in sin is now so unremarkable that the Right Rev Gavin Reid, Bishop of Maidstone, did not turn a hair when one of his adult children elected to live with a partner. This, however, has not stopped the Church of England's rearguard action against the declining power of a proper, old-fashioned marriage. Last week, Dr John Habgood, Archbishop of York, celebrated St Valentine's Day by asking the government to provide tax incentives to prod couples towards the altar. Recent legislation, he claimed, tended to treat cohabiting couples as if they were married. "And society seems to be saying, through the tax system, that it doesn't matter." Habgood means well, but he ended up implying that the state of marriage is so dreadful, nobody in their right minds would do it unless you paid them. Denise Knowles, of Relate, complained: "This pulls the rug from under the feet of love. The responsibility for making a relationship last lies with the couple, not with the government. Marrying for tax incentives would be like marrying for money." Our church leaders do have a way of putting their feet in their mouths, and Habgood caused more annoyance than pleasure - particularly among cohabiting couples, who were deeply nettled by the hint that they decided not to get married because they did a few sums on the back of an envelope and worked out that there was no financial point. This old horse bolted ages ago, and waving a fiscal carrot is unlikely to tempt it back into the stable. Over the years, the government has been chipping away at the differences between the married and the single. Since 1979, the real value of tax relief for married couples has been nearly halved; and couples who shacked up together after 1988 can no longer claim two helpings of mortgage tax relief. There is, however, a great deal more to it than money. In the bad old days, children born outside wedlock were stigmatised, and deserted paramours had little legal redress. The powers that be deserve nothing but praise for equalising the rights of the unmarried and their families. The numbers are so huge, there was really no choice. This summer, the Church of England is expected to publish a report which, though not finalised, is unlikely to condemn cohabitation - and that will amount to the church condoning "living in sin". When the report comes before the General Synod in November, traditionalists will make the usual fuss about the sanctity of Christian marriage, but any such resolution will probably be defeated - another victory for the trendy liberals. Is it kind, or even Christian, to try to discourage divorce? Before the laws were liberalised, millions of people were shackled to partners who made them miserable. Being divorced in spirit is still a divorce, and creating any obstacle, legal or financial, is sheer cruelty. If Habgood really wants to lower the divorce rate, he should make couples live together for at least a year before allowing them near the altar. There is another solution that would encourage the stability of marriage and provide useful extra revenue for the government. The archbishop made his remarks last week in response to a survey carried out by BBC Wales, which revealed that one in eight men and one in 16 women admitted to being unfaithful to their partners. An infidelity tax, applied equally to married and cohabiting couples, would make the profits from North Sea oil look like chicken feed. And the church could take comfort from the fact that though we may not get married for financial gain, we are less likely to misbehave if it means financial loss. 1.
