Stage 1 Identify Desired Results


Established Goals & Content Standards: It is the goal of the media specialist to introduce teachers to the potential benefits and possibilities of the online Accelerated Reader and Follett Destiny card catalogue. Teachers are currently unaware of the existing features and classroom applications of both school reasources.

ALA:AASL Standards Standard 1: Use of Information and Ideas


School library media candidates encourage reading and lifelong learning by stimulating interests and fostering competencies in the effective use of ideas and information. They apply a variety of strategies to ensure access to resources and information in a variety of formats to all members of the learning community. Candidates promote efficient and ethical information-seeking behavior as part of the school library media program and its services.

Standard 2: Teaching and Learning


School library media candidates model and promote collaborative planning with classroom teachers in order to teach concepts and skills of information processes integrated with classroom content. They partner with other education professionals to develop and deliver an integrated information skills curriculum. Candidates design and implement instruction that engages the students interests, passions, and needs which drive their learning.

Standard 3: Collaboration and Leadership


School library media candidates provide leadership and establish connections with the greater library and education community to create school library media programs that focus on students learning and achievement; encourage the personal and professional growth of teachers and other educators, and model the efficient and effective use of information and ideas.

Standard 4: Program Administration


School library media candidates administer the library media program in order to support the mission of the school, and according to the principles of best practice in library science and program administration.

Understandings
Teachers will understand that: o The school district currently subscribes to the online AR and Follett Destiny software programs. o The AR program allows teachers to create accounts, view reports, set goals, and monitor student progress for the purposes of improving content knowledge and literacy and RTI progress monitoring. o Follett Destiny allows patrons to search the catalog from anywhere, set up personal accounts, place books on personalized lists, place books and materials on hold, upload and access pathfinders, participate in social networking, access digital e-books, and search for scholarly articles through Galileo. o There are a wide variety of Web 2.0 tools that can be utilized to make life easier and make content more relevant to the Google generation. Related Misconceptions: The AR and Destiny programs are only important to the media specialist and English/Language Arts teachers.

Essential Questions
Overarching Questions: Why does access to and utilization of technology engage the google generation? Topical Questions: 1. How can the online Accelerated Reader and Follett Destiny card catalogue programs encourage engagement and support classroom content? 2. What other simple Web 2.0 tools are available and beneficial to classroom purposes?

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge
Teachers will know: A variety of the functions and features of both the online AR and Destiny catalog software systems.

Skills
Teachers will be able to: Access and utilize the features of AR and Destiny to better plan for and meet curriculum needs.

Stage 2 - Evidence Performance Task(s) Teachers will be equipped with their laptops throughout the training where they will be able to set up accounts as well as access and test the features being discussed. Student Self-Assessment and Reflection Teachers will be given the opportunity to ask questions, discuss, and reflect upon how the tools to which they are exposed will affect them within their various content areas and classrooms.

Stage 3 - Learning Plan

Learning Activities:

L 1. Introduce the new online software programs that are part of the middle school media center this year, and discuss the purpose of introducing the material, which is to encourage district-wide purchase and use of the software and justify renewal each year. W 2. Begin with research results supporting the AR program as a tool for increased literacy using a Web 2.0 tool that will hook the teachers into wanting to know more about AR and other Web 2.0 tools. Additionally, discuss how the software programs can be utilized in each content area. HT 3. Continue the discussion by encouraging teachers to login to AR and Destiny (when the time comes), and allow them to explore the software programs and experience the programs as they are discussed. E 4. Allow time for questions and comments after the software programs are introduced. R 5. Open the door for questions and individualized training sessions even after the initial presentation, allowing teachers time to evaluate for themselves how the new tools can best be implemented into their own classrooms.
