SCATTERED RADIATION GRIDS

expense of a loss of transmission. The transmission reserves resulting from the usage of weakly absorbing materials in the interspaces and covers of Siemens grids can be employed for an optimum selectivity. Avoiding absorbing layers as referred to above leads to an extremely low proportion of secondary scattered radiation. Together with the high selectivity of our grids this results in the excellent object contrast that can be observed in the image.

General
Scattered radiation grids made by Siemens achieve highest image quality at lowest dose losses due to excellent contrast, resolution and homogeneity values. The cause of this is the greatest possible scattered radiation absorption, best primary radiation transparency and the geometrically extremely homogenous construction of these grids. Siemens grids are produced in a process which is optimized for the highest quality, at the same time with the lowest costs. Dedicated automatic production machines in association with the most stringent quality controls and qualified employees assure the constant and unchanging highest quality standard. Each grid is tested under X-ray radiation in conditions approaching those in use.

Design and Technology

The most important design features of Siemens grids are to be found in the uncompromising use of the most suitable materials. We use a special fiber material, which consists mainly of carbon, as the medium between the grid absorbers. In this way we achieve an improved dose yield compared with the aluminum used by other manufacturers. Furthermore, in the design of the grid structure we have undertaken everything to avoid additional absorbing layers as far as possible. The cover layers that form a smooth, easy to clean surface and protect the grid against mechanical damage are made out of carbon fiber compound to achieve the highest transparency even at low tube voltages. Thanks to these measures we achieve an extremely low attenuation of the useful radiation and thus the lowest possible patient dose. However, optimizing the transmission alone is not in itself the only goal. The selectivity (effectiveness of filtering out the scatter radiation) is also optimized in Siemens grids. That physical property depends essentially upon width and height of the grid strips as well as the spatial frequency and is obtained at the
