1. Steam is transported through a mild steel pipe having inside and outside diameters 1.5 and 1.9. The inside and outside pipe wall temperatures are 205F and 195F, respectively. The thermal conductivity of mild steel is 24.8 Btu.hr-1.ft-1.F-1. Find a. b. 2. the heat loss for 10 feet of pipe the heat flux based upon inside and outside surface areas.

For steady state heat conduction through a wall with dimensions and surface temperatures shown below, express: a. the heat flow rate for a constant thermal conductivity k. b. the heat flow rate, when the thermal conductivity of the wall material varies linearly with temperature i.e. k = k0 (1+bT).

3.

A steel tube having thermal conductivity of 46 W/m-0C has an inside diameter of 3 cm and a tube wall thickness of 2mm. A fluid flows on the inside of the tube producing a convection coefficient of 1500 W/m2-0C on the inside surface, while the second fluid flows across the outside of the tube producing a convection coefficient of 197 W/m2-0C on the outside tube surface. The inside fluid temperature is 223 0C while the outside fluid temperature is 57 0C. Calculate the heat loss by the tube per meter of length.

4.

An electrical wire of 10m length and 1mm diameter dissipates 200W in air at 25 0C. The convection heat transfer coefficient between the wire surface and air is 15 W/m2-K.

(a) (b)

Determine the temperature of the wire. If the wire is insulated with mica (k = 0.5815W/m-K) such that its outer diameter increases to 3mm, determine the temperature of the wire.

(c)

Calculate the critical radius of insulation for the electrical wire. Also, determine the temperature of the wire if it is insulated to the critical thickness of insulation.

5.

Consider one dimensional steady state conditions for the plane composite wall as shown in figure. The left surface of wall A is well insulated with constant surface temperature of T0 = 160 0C. Heat is generated within wall A at the rate of 5000 W/m3. The right surface of wall C is maintained at a temperature of 19 0C due to environmental conditions. x

Assume negligible contact resistance at all interfaces. The thermal conductivities of the walls are: kA = 0.11W/m-K, kB = 0.05 W/m-K and kC = 0.72 W/m-K. The thickness of each wall is indicated in the figure. Find (a) the temperature at the interface between walls A and B. (b) the temperature at the interface between walls B and C. Also, sketch the temperature distribution and the heat flux as a function of x for the composite wall. 6. A 1mm diameter wire is maintained at a temperature of 400 0C and is exposed to a convection environment of 40 0C with h = 120 W/m2-0C. Calculate the thermal conductivity which will just cause an insulation thickness of 0.2mm to produce a critical radius. How much of this insulation must be added to reduce the heat transfer by 75 percent from that which would be experienced by the bare wire? 7. A 3mm diameter nickel-chromium (k = 19 W/m-K) wire of 1m length has been used as a heating element by applying 30V. The outer surface of the wire is maintained at 100 0C. Calculate the temperature at the centre of the wire. The electrical resistivity of the wire is 6 x 10-5 cm.

8.

A aluminium rectangular fin (k = 204 W/m-K) of length 50cm, width 20cm and thickness 2mm is attached to a wall at 350 0C and the end of the fin is insulated. The fin surface is exposed to an environment at 25 0C with h = 10 W/m2-K. Determine the heat transfer from the fin. Calculate the temperature of the fin (a) at a distance 25cm from the base. (b) at the insulated end.

9.

A steel pipe of 5cm OD is covered with 0.5 cm asbestos (k = 0.1105 W/m-K) followed by a 0.5 cm thick glass wool (k = 0.038 W/m-K) insulation. The insulation reached a steady state value of 40 0C, while the pipe surface is at 150 0C and the atmospheric air to which the insulated pipe is exposed is at 25 0C. Determine the temperature at the interface of asbestos and glass wool and the film coefficient between the glass wool and atmospheric air.

10.

Find the heat transfer per unit area through the composite wall as shown in the figure. Assume one dimensional heat flow. The thermal conductivities of the walls are: kA = 150 W/m-0C, kB = 30 W/m-0C, kC = 50 W/m-0C & kD = 70 W/m-0C.
