Understanding How to Use the Thompson Chain-Reference System

One of the best places to see how the Chain-Reference System works is in Psalm 23. In this tutorial we will be using the King James Version Thompson, but all the translations published by Kirkbride work the same way. The only things that sometimes change are the names of the Indexes. This 9 word verse packs 3 main thoughts (topics): - the Lord is my shepherd = we are Gods Sheep (3266) - the Lord is my shepherd = Christ is our Shepherd (3264) - I shall not want = the Lord provides for our needs (2905) To the left of the verse you see a group of topics and verse references in the margin. Locate the one that shows 3266 Gods Sheep, 74:1. This reference states the Pilot Number for the topic of Gods Sheep is 3266. If you turn to the Text Cyclopedia in the back of the Thompson Bible, you will see all the listings under the topic Gods Sheep. Now turn back to Psalm 23. The reference number immediately following 3266 Gods Sheep shows 74:1. This is called a Forward Reference. This tells us the next verse for the topic can be found at Psalm 74:1.

Turn to Psalm 74:1 and locate the Marginal References to the left of the Scripture and the one that states: 3266 Gods Sheep 79:13. Note the Topic Number didnt change just the next forward reference. This directs us to Psalm 79:13.

Turn to Psalm 79:13. This time the references are in the far right column on the page. You see that 3266 Gods Sheep now prompts you to go to Mt. 10:16 (Matthew 10:16).

If you follow the entire chain for 3266 Gods Sheep, you will end up at John 10:3. Note: since there is no forward reference for 3266 Gods Sheep, you have come to the end of the chain of references for that topic.

Now that you have become familiar with chaining through a topic, lets reverse the process. Say that you are doing a study on the topic of Grace. There are numerous verses on this topic, but where exactly do you want to dive in? It is easier than you think. Just turn to the back of a Thompson Bible and locate the General Index. Here over 8,000 topics are listed alphabetically with their associated Thompson Pilot Number to the right of them. Turn to the Gs and locate Grace. Notice the main topic of Grace is subdivided into sub-listings (Divine Grace; Christs Grace; Gods Grace; Growth in Grace; Riches of Grace; and Salvation by Grace). The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible will help aid your Bible study by taking larger topics and making them more manageable. You can now examine the subtopic Salvation by Grace and see that its pilot number is 1447. Turn to that number in the Text Cyclopedia and view a listing of appropriate verses of Scripture for Salvation by Grace. The number (3) next to the topic header means that this is the third subtopic under the larger topic of Divine Grace.

By understanding the chains, pilot numbers, and general / numeric indexes you are ready to begin a more meaningful, powerful, yet easy to understand way of studying the Word of God.
