Title: Motherboard Name MSI G31M3 V2 (MS-7529) Post by: zmay on 01 December 09, 20:16:20 Hi, I have a Motherboard MSI G31M3 V2 (MS-7529), BIOS Type AMI (07/15/08) and i would like to update my bios, because I have problems with DMA/PIO changes. On msi web site I found updates just for G31M3-L V2/ G31M3-LS V2. Is the same name for my Motherboard? Thanks in advance! G31M3-F V2 (3 Audio Ports) http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no= 1573 Be careful you identify your board correctly, as each one uses different BIOS versions, and you run the risk of ruining your board if you use the wrong one!

Quote DMI BIOS Version V2.1

Well that tells us you have the G31M3-L V2 / G31M3-LS V2 and should use 2.x BIOS versions. But before proceeding, please answer...

Can you please be more specific about the drive models you are using? What is the brand and model name for each drive? Are those drives SATA drives or IDE/PATA Drives? If they are IDE/PATA Drives, how are they jumpered (MASTER/SLAVE/CABLE SELECT)? Are you using an IDE/PATA-Cable with 40 or 80 wires? In case you are using SATA Drives (or in case one of your drives is a SATA drive), what SATA Generation? SATA-I and SATA-II?
Quote he driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D.) and mode change into PIO

Which one of your two hard drives is affected by that? What operating system are you using exactly? Title: Re: Motherboard Name MSI G31M3 V2 (MS-7529) Post by: zmay on 02 December 09, 10:51:05 Here are informations fro Everest report: Storage: IDE Controller Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF IDE Controller Intel(R) 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C0 Disk Drive SAMSUNG HD103UJ (1000 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA-II)

I guess Disk Drive WDC WD4000AAJS-00YFA0 (372 GB, IDE) which has two partitions C and D. There are still (controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D.) Title: Re: Motherboard Name MSI G31M3 V2 (MS-7529) Post by: Jack on 02 December 09, 11:08:50 Okay. So you have a SATA-II Drive and an IDE/PATA-Drive. Only the latter one is actually capable of being operated in PIO Mode. Look at the drive itself and check the Jumper Settings of the drive (it can be set to MASTER, SLAVE or CABLE SELECT). What is your drive set to? Also, what about the cable? (40 or 80 wires)? No software on this planet will be able to answer these questions. You have to look at the drive itself and the cable to check... One more thing: The IDE Cable as two connectors. One is hooked up to the hard drive. What about the other connector? Is there an optical drive connected to it or is the connector vacant?
Quote BTW, the update of bios (7529v26.zip) don't solve the problem. There are still (controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D.)

Of course not. The problem has to do with the IDE/PATA Connection, not with your SATA Drive. If you would have provided better information about your hard drive configuration in the beginning, we could have told you that beforehand. Title: Re: Motherboard Name MSI G31M3 V2 (MS-7529) Post by: zmay on 02 December 09, 11:29:46 I looked in the computer and two hard drive are SATA-II. I don't know why Everest reported IDE. The cables are the same for both hard drives. Title: Re: Motherboard Name MSI G31M3 V2 (MS-7529) Post by: Jack on 02 December 09, 11:39:11 Well, if that is true, then there is something wrong with the error message itself. Your SATA Controller can only operate in SATA-I or SATA-II mode. There is no such thing as PIO Mode for SATA Controllers. In Device Manager, please look for this controller:
Quote IDE Controller Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF

And check the current driver version (Driver Vendor and version ID).
