The March of Time

Introduction
The March of Time will have six players taking upon themselves the roles of four incarnations of the Doctor as well as, Riversong, and the Master. The adventure was written with convention play in mind, though with only minimal effort it can be expanded upon for a long-term campaign should that be the game-masters need. It is absolutely necessary that the GM be familiar with the rules for Fasas, Doctor Who Role-playing Game, as he or she will need to maintain the momentum of the game without stopping throughout in order to look up rules. With that said, the GM should still feel free to make changes as needed both in the adventure and with the official game rules should they feel it best in order to promote the fun of the players. As this is intended for convention use, the GMs use of time management will be key to ensure the players meet the adventure objectives before the event ends. Therefore, it is recommended that the GM divide the adventure into three segments and allow one third of the event time to each. Should the players fall behind, there is nothing wrong with foregoing rolls for finding important clues, rather it might be wiser to simply let fate place the clues before them until they are caught back up, after all the good Doctor has always been blessed with luck in equal proportion to his intellectual gifts.

Plot Synapsis
For the first segment of this adventure, play begins with the eleventh Doctor hurrying back within his TARDIS to pick-up Amy and Rory from their honeymoon vacation. He does not get very far when he suddenly feels the TARDIS begin to shake violently and then all is still. Apparently, the TARDIS has fallen through a crack in the Vortex and now sits marooned at a point in Null-Space where time and matter do not exist. Following this unexpected stranding, a strange message from the TARDIS computer warns of the fall of equilibrium but before he can begin unraveling its meaning, he finds the TARDIS suddenly crowded with three of his past incarnations (the GM can determine which incarnations as seen fit based upon player preference and familiarity, a full list of the Doctors various past selves can be found at the end of the written adventure).

Due to the time-crash, each incarnation feels it is the others whom have appeared upon his own TARDIS, though the change in the TARDIS interior should quickly clue them in on the fact that they are indeed now within the time stream of the Eleventh Doctor. Such a time-crash is dangerous but before they can work out the implications, they are joined by a confused Riversong, who as in a trance, repeats the TARDIS warning. Amidst the chaos of this dangerous reunion the TARDIS door now begins to open of its own volition, a blinding light shining through and a deep voice calling for all to step out. A familiar event, likely remembered by the fourth Doctor, should he be present, heralding a meeting with the enigmatic White Guardian and one otherthe Master! The White Guardian then details for all the situation at hand. The Old Eye of Harmony has been cut off by the time-lock on Gallifrey and can no longer stabilize and power the Vortex. The Vortex is disintegrating and its collapse will create a Big Crunch as the universe subsequently collapses in on itself. Already rifts are appearing in the Vortex causing the time-streams to inter-mix. The Doctors and his companions must create a new Eye of Harmony to re-stabilize the Vortex and avert the approaching end of all. In the second segment, the players should realize that in order to create a new Eye of Harmony, they must locate a mythic and of the Other. Travelling to the coordinates placed into the TARDIS by the Eight Doctor, who had hidden this artifact prior to enacting the Moment, the players arrive by TARDIS aboard a massive zeppelin, LZ129, in the year 1956. LZ129 is more commonly known by the name, Hindenburg and World War II is still being waged between Europe and the United States, England having by now lost to the armies of, Der Fuerher. The Hindenburg is en route to London and aboard it, Der Fuehrer himself travels. Obviously the time-stream has been altered and adding further surprise, the players discover that Der Fuehrer is not Adolph Hitler, but rather the Dalek creator, Davros, who habing escaped the Last Great Time War, has learned of the Other Hand and hopes to use its power to defeat the Allie forces and create a new Dalek empire using human DNA. In order to complete the second segment, the players will have to regain the Other Hand, escape the Hindenburg. Finally, in the third segment, the players must now find a suitable star by which they can use the Other Hand to create a new Eye of Harmony and restore the spacetime continuum. However, there is one more catch. A time-lord is required to enter the newly formed Eye, in order to stabilize the singularity, but such an act means sacrificing himself for the good of reality. The Other may or may not appear to make

this sacrifice, depending upon how the party answers the riddle engraved upon the Casket containing the Hand of the Other.

PART 1
An unexpected Reunion

The Scene
The Eleventh Doctor had just finished cooking himself a nice plate of fish fingers and was attempting to balance the plate along with a bowl of custard tucked under his chin when the TARDIS internal speakers cheerfully chirped, You have mail. Following this, the primary monitor displayed a cryptic message reading,
'Equilibrium has fallen and the universe dies. The Doctor must seek the eyes which see no more, that a new eye might be opened.'

Still balancing both plate and bowl, the Doctor had but a moment to digest both the message and one fish finger absently dipped in the custard now smeared across his chin when, considering the meaning of this electronic missive, he turned to find that he was not alone in his beloved TARDIS. In the control room stood three familiar figures. One with rather large ears wearing a black leather jacket; another was a tall figure in a frock coat, all hair and teeth with a ridiculous scarf and hat; and finally a little man carrying an umbrella and dressed in a tweed jacket with a red paisley handkerchief tucked into the left pocket to match his tie, a white Panama hat with the brim turned up finished his outfit. Here stood, his fourth, seventh and ninth incarnations. This was definitely bad.
4

Then things got even more confusing as a familiar voice behind him called out, Hello darling. Rory and Amy were not going to be picked up on time.

GM Notes
The TARDIS has crashed through a crack in the Vortex, causing this impromptu and highly dangerous meeting of the Doctors incarnations, not to mention the arrival of Riversong. However, this is not the only consequence, for when the TARDIS hurtled through the rift, it fell into a Null Zone where time and space do not exist. While normally this would prove catastrophic, the TARDIS has been intercepted and protected the enigmatic, White Guardian. The White Guardian, a mythic being living beyond time and space, has foreseenor orchestratedthis crisis and now uses it to gather certain agents together that he might use them to save the universe.

A Word with the White Guardian

The Scene
The TARDIS doors now begin to open on their own volition, a bright light shining in from whatever lay outside, beyond the relative safety of the TARDIS. A child-like voice resonates throughout the TARDIS control room, Equilibrium has fallen and the universe dies. The Doctor must seek the eyes which see no more, that a new eye might be opened.

The landscape was rocky and barren with a crimson sky, dominated by a red giant. Situated rather out-of-place here was a Victorian era settee. Reclining upon the white velvet cushions, wrapped in a robe matching the same hue as the divan, was a young child with startling blue eyes. Beside him stands another figure whom the Doctors, if not Riversong, immediately recognize with differing degrees of astonishment and anger, The Master. "Doctor, I am the White Guardian. Your presence is required. It would seem that forces within the universe threaten the balance and your services are again called for. This time, it concerns the very existence of the Time Vortex itself. I fear a Timelord has gone and destabilized the Vortex, cracks are already beginning to show throughout the space-time continuum."

GM Notes
At this point, the White Guardian reveals the situation with the Vortex. He explains that when Gallifrey was placed in a time-lock by the Doctors own Eighth incarnation, the Eye of Harmony was effectively destroyed or at least so cut off as to have the same result. No longer acting to stabilize the Vortex, the Vortex was now coming apart at the seams and its unraveling was causing unimaginable ripples throught the time streams, which if left uncheck would result in the collapse of the universe. Various answers to obvious questions might be: Gallifrey has been time-locked? Who did it?

"My good Doctor, the Timelord I speak of was you. Or will be you. If you would prefer, I shall specify in saying, your eighth incarnation. You see, your future self managed to place the Eye of Harmony within a timelock. The Eye acted to maintain the integrity of the Vortex, and now with the Eye separated, I fear the Vortex will collapse back into the quantum foam from which it sprang. The consequences of which, would mean the end of the universe as you know it. Already, my brother Guardians feel the effects. Equilibrium has fallen and it is up to you to seek the Eye not yet open." We must stop this, but how?

"Indeed Doctor, I had hoped such would be your response. You have but to return to your TARDIS, it is my hope your assembled companions will aid you. I think you know them well. But beware, for even as I, the White Guardian work to stabilize reality, my counterpart, the Black Guardian strives in the opposite direction. And he too will have his own agents at work to oppose your mission. Beware the Black Guardian and his agents." Why is The Master Here?

The Master has as much to lose as yourself. In his own fashion, he is equally responsible for this situation, therefore it is fitting that he aid you in restoring the balance.

If this is being played as a convention event, keep the meeting with the White Guardian to fifteen minutes, after all there is a universe to save and the White Guardian cannot be expected to answer questions all day.

Painful Memories
GM Notes
At this point, it is assumed the players have many questionsat least from the Fourth and Seventh Doctors, and possibly the Masterconcerning just why the Eighth Doctor would have placed Gallifrey in a time-lock, effectively committing genocide upon the Time-lord race. Obviously the Ninth and Eleventh Doctors know the reason for this and can try and explain, however it would be easier to simply make Contact, melding minds to share what all Doctors know.

The Scene
Even as the Doctors clasp hands and close their eyes, their four minds become one. The events leading up to the Last Great Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks streak through the now joint uni-mind of the Doctor! They remembers it all now, it had begun long ago, the Time Lords had predicted that in one possible timeline, the Daleks would destroy all other life forms and make themselves the dominant creature in the universe. Because of this, the Time Lord, Ferain, had sent the Fourth Doctor on a mission to Skaro during the Thousand Year War with the objective of preventing the genesis of the Daleks. However, despite the knowledge of how terrible that form of life would later
7

evolve to become, in the end, he had held back, believing he lacked the right to destroy a burgeoning new life-form. The Daleks learned of the attempt and increased hostilities against the Time Lords. There were more skirmishes after this. There would never be peace between these two time-spanning races. The Doctor, now in his Eighth incarnation, watched a child die by the weapon of a dalek and for the first time in his long life, he knew a thirst for revenge. He could have saved that child, he could have wiped their unholy race out at its birth, but he had shown mercy. Now, he would correct that mistake. The Sontaran legends still speak with awe of the Doctor, who they say led the Time Lords into battle against the Daleks. During the very first year Davros fell at the Gates of Elysium, his command ship flying into the jaws of the Nightmare Child. The war resulted in countless millions dying endless deaths, as time travel was used by both sides to reverse battles that caused massive fatalities on both sides. These excesses of time warfare eventually led to the whole of the conflict becoming "time-locked", so that no time traveller could go back into it. The final days were a "hell", with the Timelords waging a pitched battle against such horrors as the Skaro Degradations, the Horde of Travesties, the Nightmare Child, the Could-Have-Been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Never-Weres. By the end of the war, President Rassilon became so desperate to succeed that he proposed the Ultimate Sanction, a plan in which the Time Lords would ascend to become creatures of pure consciousness, but in so doing would destroy all of creation. The Doctor had discovered a way to end the war, "The Moment", and when he became aware of Rassilon's "Ultimate Sanction". Faced with his most difficult decision, the Doctor initiated The Moment which resulted in the destruction of both antagonists together. The Time War concluded with the mutual destruction of both belligerents

and their respective planets. The Dalek fleet reportedly ten million ships was destroyed by the Doctor and the Medusa Cascade was sealed. During the last act of the Last Great Time War, Gallifrey, many planets, star systems and even galaxies were destroyed in a single instant. Gallifrey itself was destroyed when the Cruciform fell upon the burning planet. In that instant, both the Time Lords and the Daleks disappeared from time and space. The Doctors now realize in unison, "When I turned the Key in the lock I doomed them all." The contact ends.

A Voice from the Past

The Scene
Struggling to discover a clue as to how best to begin the mission charged to them, a semi-transparent figure materializes in front of the control dais. It is the Eighth Doctor, though plainly enough in hologram form. Gazing upon all with a look of great sadness, he says, My Friends, if you are witnessing this, my last communication, then the world as we know it stands upon the brink and the Doctor is once more needed to set things right. By now, I may assume you know of the tragic steps I will have taken to ensure the existence of sentient life in the universe. As I now embark upon this, my last act, you who have come before and after may feel revulsion at my tactics. However, if you would, please extend me, and thereby yourself, the benefit of remembering that we have ever acted to preserve the greater good. The ripples of this action will doubtless be widespread, and if my suspicions are correct, it may be necessary to re-stabilize the Vortex. If such should prove the case, the Hand of Omega shall be denied you. However, do not give up hope, the universe favors symmetry, if you lose one hand, seek the Other Hand.

He now lifts from his pocket an antique fobwatch. Remember, the hands of time always point us forward.

GM Notes
Given that the old Eye is still on Gallifrey within a time-lock it should be abundantly clear that to restore the Vortex and thus save the universe, a new Eye of Harmony needs to be created. Allow the players a chance to deduce on their own that to create an Eye of Harmony, they will need to first locate another artifact almost as mythical as the Eye itself. The Others Hand. Should the players make a successful roll using Gallifreyan History versus a difficulty of V, they will recall the ancient legend of the Left Hand of Omega, sometimes called, The Others Hand. Legend states that the Eye of Harmony was created by three ancient time-lords, Rassilon, Omega, and one known only as The Other. Omega had constructed a vastly powerful, stellar manipulator, which in typical Time-lord pretentiousness, he called, the Hand of Omega. The three then went on to create the singularity which would act as the power source for the Gallifreyans' subsequent mastery over time travel. The supernova is believed to have consumed Omega, but in truth, had shunted him into an antimatter universe where his presence stabilized the Eye from the other side. History aside, after the time-lock was set by the Eighth Doctor, the Hand of Omega, like the Eye of Harmony, was lost along with everything else on Gallifrey. As for the Other Hand, with the loss of the Time-lords, now no one knows its location, if

10

it exists at all. Therefore the players have two choices, they can attempt to break the time-lock and enter the Time-War, whichin the off chance they are successfulwill most likely result in their own imprisonment, or they can try to find the other Hand and create a new Eye of Harmony. Given the clues provided by the Eighth Doctors hologram, the players may make an intuition roll and if successful, they realize that their eighth incarnation was passing to them a valuable, if not-so-subtle clue. Allow a bonus for decrypting his message and understand that he is directing them not to examine the second hand of their time-pieces, but rather to locate the legendary, Other Hand. Luckily, unlike the Eye and Hand, the watch did not disappear with the loss of Gallifrey, but rather sits in one of the many closets of the TARDIS and can be easily found. Opening the pocket watch reveals its true nature. Upon opening the watch, the Doctors remember the Eighth Doctor hiding the whereabouts of the Other Hand prior to initiating the Moment. Foreseeing its future need, The Eighth Doctor hid the coordinates for the Other Hand in the watch, that his future might then discover when the Hand was needed. Sol3 located in sector 8023 of the third quadrant. Earth!

11

Part 2
The Left Turn at Albuquerque
The Scene
As the Doctors and their companions pieced together the message of the Eighth Doctor, the TARDIS, now released back into the flow of space-time suddenly takes a tremendous jolt rocking all from their feet amid a blaring cacophony of alarms. Checking the monitor, it becomes clear, the TARDIS has left the Vortex to emerge within an
12

asteroid belt encircling a titan star. The TARDIS continued drifting along it's established orbit about the great blazing red orb with the majority of rocky objects within the asteroid belt moving harmlessly past, their trajectories carrying them wide of the little blue box; the much smaller chunks of rock and ice being deflected by the defensive field generated by the TARDIS. In all, the view was quite unique. And then alarms began going off inside the TARDIS.

GM Notes:
It takes little effort to pull up their current coordinates upon the TARDIS computer. It is a system the Doctors have all visited in the past, but it looks all wrong. For one thing, there are no planets anymore within the system, only the great asteroid belt. For another, the star itself has changed, it was always a giant, but now it is ballooned to even greater dimensions and seems to be in its final death throws. They were in the Pescan system. Its super-massive sun, having neared the end of its relatively short lifespan, was burning up the surrounding planets. Now the monster star displayed on the monitor has apparently reached that ultimate end. Only a few burnt cinders and a wide asteroid belt, representing what was left of the outer-most planets, still in rotate around it. The TARDIS has always had problems with its Time Rotor and now it has materialized near a star which is about to go hypernova; The massive stars fuel is exhausted, iron forming from the intense pressure and gravity is taking the upper hand. The player manning the TARDIS controls must now act fast to avoid the solar flare hurtling towards them. Have the player make a TARDIS Systems roll to activate the Hostile Action Defense System (H.A.D.S.) which will cause the TARDIS to automatically make a microjump allowing the TARDIS to maneuver a safe distance away from the oncoming plasma cloud. A failure results in the TARDIS being caught off guard within the intense field of radiation, powerful enough to subtly disrupt the time-space matrix and as the TARDIS no longer has a direct link to its primary power source, the Eye of Harmony, its force field may prove unable to fully shield the TARDIS occupants from the deadly radiation and may even damage the TARDIS itself!

13

A failure to activate the H.A.D.S. will call for another roll to see how much damage is inflicted against the TARDIS shields. The massive flare is capable of dishing out up to 360 points of damage6d6 x10and the TARDIS shields, normally capable of withstanding up to 400 points, in its current capacity, it can only absorb half this amount200 points. If 1-50 additional points get through, it is assumed the TARDIS has taken a minor hit. However, if more than 50 additional points are taken, the TARDIS has taken a critical hit. In order to determine which systems are damaged on a minor/critical hit, refer to page 72 of the Game Operations Manual.* *On a roll of 5,7 and 9 replace minor system with Space-Time Stabilizer (STS) The TARDIS has 3 STS modules, 2 in the main control room and 1 in the Secondary Control Room. However, only 1 of the Primary Control STS modules currently function, as the other was damaged back when the very 1st Doctor stole the TARDIS. This is why it flickers in and out upon first materializing outside the Vortex. Should either control room lose the use of its remaining STS module, the TARDIS must be controlled from the control chamber still retaining its module. The modules can be fixed with a TARDIS systems check against difficulty V. The Doctor, in true fashion, has simply never gotten around to fixing its currently damaged module.

LZ-129

14

The Scene
Moving about the control dais with frenetic abandon even as the massive star outside seemed on the verge of collapse, the central time cylinder began to thrum with the familiar rhythmic wheeze all within knew so well. The TARDIS heaved once and all were forced to once more grab hold of the surrounding rails as the odd blue police box hurled itself back into the time vortex! And then all was still.

GM Notes:
The TARDIS has jumped back through the TARDIS and more or less following the coordinates entered, it has made its landing aboard the most famous air zeppelin of the time, LZ-129, or more commonly known by the name, Hindenburg.

Another Fine Mess

The Scene
Exiting the TARDIS, all find themselves within what appears to be a very small and low ceilinged warehouse, its dimensions rectangular with small doorways at both ends. Surrounding the Police Box there are an assortment of tarp covered crates interspaced by large gas tanks. There is even a Mercedes Benz 770 adorned with small red flags over the headlights, both flags bearing a strange symbol. A constant dull thrum is heard from the walls. Two small windows can be seen looking out from the longer dimensions of the room.

GM Notes:
This is the cargo hold of the Hindenburg. Looking out the windows, the party discovers they are high up in what appear to be clouds. Taking the door to the left will lead the party through the keel corridor along the belly of the blimp past more
15

tanks and equipment until at last coming to a rear observation deck. Taking the right door, the party finds themselves in the Crews Quarters. Beyond that the crew mess hall and then finally into the passenger quarters. If the party is caught by a Dalek or Blackshirt proceed to Der Fuhrer, Davros! If caught by a crewmember, roll to see if they can fast talk their way past and proceed to Another Fly in the Ointment. Note that the Mecerdes Benz 770 is in fact the Other Hand disguised through the use of a Dalek designed, chameleon circuit. The players should actively state they are looking to pierce such a disguise before granting a roll to do so. Otherwise the disguise remains in place, the Hand taken for what it appears to be. Any characters attempting to start the car note that its engine refuses to turn over.

Der Fuhrer, Davros!

The Scene
It seems unbelievable that the Daleks have once again survived when the Doctor has lost everything of his own kind. Now, held at gun-point, You are, The Doctor! You and your companions will be interrogated! If you resist, you will be EXTERMINATED! The Dalek now herds all through the narrow corridor and up a flight of steps the Dalek maneuvering the steps by simply levitating upwards before continuing along an outer promenade lined by large windows which overlook the ground far below. The Dalek stops at a solid steel door from which extends a mechanical eye stalk of obvious Dalek designs. The
16

eye stalk swivels to regard each and from an intercom comes another artificiallysynthesized Dalek voice questioning their escort, Report! I obey! The Doctor has survived the Time War. The Doctor and his companions were caught attempting to sabotage the master plan! Now the Doctor and his companions are prisoners of the Daleks! The Doctor?! You will bring the Doctor and his companions before Der Fuhrer for interrogation! I obey! The door slides open and escorting the group through the door and into a large shadowy room. Inside, two more Daleks moves about tending various high tech monitors, sensors and other equipment far too advanced for the era. The first Dalek , You will stand for Der Fuhrer. Der Fuhrer will discover the Doctors true plans! A short, mustached figure wearing jackboots and a brown S.A. uniform stands off to the side flanked by a pair of black suited S.S. officers. Those familiar with their history instantly recognize this man as Adolph Hitler, Germanys maniacal dictator who plunged his nation in World War II and attempted to enact genocide. However, Hitler does not act as a man in charge. In fact, he has the pale pallor of fear as he regards their prisoners. It is not until another emerges from the shadowshrouded rooms far end that Hitler reacts, raising his right hand up into the air along with the two next to him. The one who now demands their salute is a decrepit figure confined to what appears to be a futuristic wheel-chair. His face is withered, his eyes seem sealed shut and he appears to have only the use of his right arm. As he moves his chair from the darkness to get a closer look at the prisoners, both Daleks and Nazis alike greet him, All hail der Fuhrer! All

17

hail Davros!!! Doctor, we meet again.

GM Notes:
At this point it is clear that at least some Daleks survived the Moment and escaped time-lock. It is equally clear that they managed to bring Davros out with them. This should be played out by the GM to achieve maximum surprise on the part of the players. In truth, it was only one Dalek that spirited Davros to safety, and that Dalek paid a high price, having having been driven mad in the process. The Daleks seen with Davros, represent a new stage in Dalek evolution, having been created using the cellular material of only the most promising within the Nazi party. Traveling as Davros personal guard aboard the Hindenburg are five such Daleks (the fifth being currently stationed in the Hindenburgs wheel room). Unknown to most Germans, the infamous dictator of WWII Germany is in fact Davros. He uses Hitler merely as a face by which to address the ignorant masses. Davros cares nothing for the dominion of the Earth, humanity being but the clay he uses to mold his army of Daleks. It is the universe Davros desires; and with the destruction of the Time-lords, he now sees little to stop him. But what is the goal of Davros? Davros has had the Nazis searching across the globe for various mythical objects of religion and superstition. Now, from high in the mountains of Nepal, the blackshirts of Adolph Hittler have found that which the Daleks require to complete the master plan. It is a vastly powerful weapon capable of obliterating entire armies with a single use. And at last, this weapon has been brought by Hitler, himself, to place before his Dalek masters. The Daleks now hold, The

Others Hand!

Another Fly in the Ointment

The Scene
Having successfully made it to the part of B Deck housing the passenger berths, the Doctors and company find a hall leading past several doors to eventually

18

terminate at the forward end in a stair that winds both downwards and upwards and the rear end entering the kitchens, crew berths and storage areas.

GM Notes:
When traveling down this corridor, have the players roll to hear a muffled bout of cursing from within one of the berths. If they try the door in an effort to investigate, they find it locked. Should they knock, it is answered by a black shirted S.S. officer who demands to know their identity. If it is forced open, the same officer now wheels upon them with a drawn Luger. There is one other person in the berth, a gagged man with his hands manacled behind his back. The 9th and 11th Doctors will recognize the bound man as Captain Jack Harkness. Jack was caught while attempting to sabotage the Hindenburg. He has already successfully attached high explosives to the zepplins super structure that will upon detonation ignite the Hindenburgs hydrogen bladders. Unfortunately, he does not have the detonator, having already dumped it when he realized his impending capture. At this point in time, Jack has not yet encountered the the Doctor. However, he recognizes a rescue when he sees one and he knows of the Dalek plan, if not what the device itself actually is. He will brief the party on what they face if rescued. He will also tell them of the explosives.

PART 3
The Dalek Master Plan
GM Notes:
What is, the Daleks master plan?
19

During the Last Great Time War, when Time-lords fought Daleks, Davros learned of the second stellar manipulator. Having been rescued from the time-lock by the now insane Dalek Caan, Davros began searching for the Other Hand. He believes it to be the weapon used to destroy both Time-lords and Daleks. Following instructions uttered by the mad Caan, Davros sought out Earth, supplanted Adolph Hitler and used the Nazis to search for the artifact even as he began the Final Solution in order to continue his terrible genetic experiments to rebuild the Dalek race. After many failures combining his own Kaled DNA with human test subjects, he perfected his genetic formula and began converting the most suitable Nazis stormtroopers. Not quite Kaled but neither human anymore. They were the next generation of Daleks! With his new Daleks it was easy to begin the conquest of Earth, his new master race marching on all governments, rolling over their primitive resistance. Yet he had little interest in ruling Earth, he had more grandiose designs. Davros desired the complete extermination of all non-Dalek life in the universe. For that he would need the Other Hand. And now he has it.

The Interrogation
The Scene
Doctor, you have come just in time to witness the rebirth of the Dalek Empire. Like this feeble planets mythical Phoenix, the Cult of Skaro shall again rise from the ashes and the entire universe shall fall before the superior might of the Dalek master race! Daleks, prepare the Rack. We Obey! The Dalek s helmet like carapace swivels about to face the blackshirts, You will prepare the Doctor for interrogation!

20

The Nazis move forward but then pause, attempting to determine which Doctor they are to begin with. It is Davros who breaks the confusion, You will identify which of you is the Doctors latest incarnation! Davros delights in using his torture machine upon his prisoners, always asking the same question; Explain how you survived the Time War! Explain what you are doing here! Explain how there can be more than one Doctor inhabiting the same time-space point!

GM Notes:
Davros readily remembers almost all incarnations of the Doctor, however, he has yet to encounter the last three. Assuming those versions of the Doctor do identify themselves, Davros will assume them to be mere companions. If no one identifies themselves as the latest incarnation, Davros goes simply on memory and selects the most recent iteration he can recall. Whomever is selected, will be dragged over by the blackshirts to a metallic table and strapped in. If successful, the one chosen is questioned on how he learned of Davros locationbeing paranoid, Davros cannot accept that his reunion with his arch nemesis could be mere chance. Companions are not deemed as great a threat and thus are treated with little respect and more importantly, less guard. It is conceivable that those not being interrogated could come up with a plan to escape at this point. Davros is most keen for information concerning the device by which the Doctor destroyed both the Daleks and Time-lords. If he finds the answers given to be unsatisfactory, he has the Daleks activate the Pain Amplifier to which the Doctor is now attached. After each question not answered to Davros satisfaction, he activates the amplifier sending electric pulses into the nerve stem resulting in Should Davros get the information he seeks, he will gloatingly reveal that it is he who now wields the power to destroy armies, even as the Doctor once did. Should Davros not get the information he seeks, he still gloats about his new toy. Either way, it becomes clear that the Daleks have somehow come to be in possession of The Moment. If the party manages to somehow escape Davros interrogation, move on to Flies in the Ointment. If they do not manage an escape at this point, move to The Return of Captain Jack!

21

Captain Jack!
The Scene
Davros interrogation is suddenly cut short when a small canister rolls into the center of the room. Then all hell breaks loose as it explodes into a brilliant burst of light, the Daleks shaking with tendrils of electricity crawling over their armored shells and Davros screams in fury as he loses control of his wheel chair. A voice cries out over the chaos in the room, If you wish to live, follow me now!

GM Notes:
The voice belongs to, Captain Jack Harkness. An ex-time agent and galactic con-artist, Captain Jack has been stranded on Earth since the 19th century. Made immortal by the Bad Wolf entity, he now fights with the humans against the Dalek takeover. Upon learning that the Dalek leader, Davros would be traveling aboard the Hindenburg, Jack has snuck onto the zeppelin to plant explosives in the hope of blowing the Hindenburg up and killing Davros. Unable to ignore the plight of the Doctors and the party, he now acts against his better judgement by revealing himself to try and save them from the Daleks. Throwing an electro-paralysis grenade of his own making, Jack has temporarily incapacitated the Dalek combat suits, including the one Davros utilizes in his wheelchair design. However, this paralysis is short lived, lasting only five rounds. Or five minutes. The players now have a chance to make their escape provided they can free whoever is bound to Davros pain amplifier AND break past Hitler and his S.S. guard.

22

Escape from the Daleks

The Scene
It is now a mad dash through the Hindenburg. The Daleks master plan has been revealed and all now realize that if you are to stop Davros mad scheme then you must first locate the Other Hand and make good your own escape with it. Behind you, from Davros control room, all hear his furious commands, Daleks, exterminate them all! It is answered by the Daleks, We obey! Exterminate the Doctors! Exterminate the the Doctors companions! Exterminate! EXETRMINATE!

EXTERMINATE!!!

GM Notes:
If the party also manages to take Hitler or one of his bodyguards prisoner, they can attempt to learn the location of the Other Hand, which is being kept in the storage area, ironically enough only ten feet from where the TARDIS rests. The Left Hand of Omega is in actuality the flag adorned Mercedes Benz 770, which only appears like an automobile because of a Dalek designed chameleon circuit. Using a sonic or laser screwdriver, the players may make a roll versus IV to try and locate the disguised stellar manipulator. Then with another roll versus a rating of III, they can disable the circuit to reveal a rectangular box of a strange metallic alloy bearing an ancient Time-lord seal. The Left Hand of Omega will follow simple voice commands and can levitate to move where directed. During the initial flight, Captain Jack will break away from the others, saying with a roguish wink that he still has some unfinished business to attend to. He will then attempt to make it to the explosives he has already planted within the Hindenburgs super structure above. It should be assumed that both the Daleks and the several S.S.
23

officers on board the Hindenburg will be in hot pursuit. Only one Dalek, at most, will follow Capatain Jack if witnessing his separation from the others. Assuming the party successfully flees their pursuers, gains the Other Hand and makes it back into the TARDIS, they are relatively safe and can make a TARDIS Systems roll to jump back into the Vortex. If any players opt to go with Captain Jack, he attempts to persuade them to get back to the TARDIS. Captain Jack has lost his remote detonator and realizes that he will have to explode the charges manually, likely killing himself in the process! The last image of the Hindenburg seen by the party from inside the TARDIS is the great zeppelin exploding and presumably Captain Jack with it!

PART 4

24

The Dying of the Light

The Scene
The police call box, that was not a police call box, hurtles through the blue-shifted Vortex, a kaleidoscope of neon blue whizzing past the time-machine. To those inside, the trip is brief despite the many millions of years and parsecs being crossed as they jump through space and time to reach the Pescan system in time to reach the death bed of a red giant. And then the TARDIS comes to a halt, the familiar mechanical wheeze signaling its materialization at a relatively safe distance from the convulsing star. The titan stars surface roils with arcing in magnetic coils of superheated plasma. One hundred times the mass of the star they have just left behind to circle Earth, when this star dies, it will do far more then create a super-nova, its very core will collapse inward, ripping a the very fabric of space and time. When this star dies, it will leave only a hole devouring all that falls within it.

GM Notes:
This star has reached the twilight of its life, yet even now, if left to its own it might linger on in inner turmoil for another hundred years. However, as the haphazard trip through the Vortex has proven, the universe does not have even a fraction of that time left. If the Doctors are to save the universe, it must be now and to do so
25

they must do two things. They must activate the Other Hand and then one amongst them must enter the ensuing black hole, hopefully to arrive through the other side within the anti-matter universe, as only a Time-lord can hope to maintain the two way portal and thus bring into creation a new Eye of Harmony. Obviously, the Doctors past incarnations cannot make such a trip, as it would end the Doctors own temporal continuity, destroying his future selves. The Master would likely never agree to such an act of self-sacrifice. And Riversong lacks the knowledge and innate abilities needed to accomplish this goal. There are two possibilities (and more if you or the players come up with additional viable solutions). The first is that the Master, under the influence of the Black Guardian, will now enact his final treachery and attempt to steal the Left Hand of Omega. This will result either in the others besting him and then tossing him into the singularity; or it will result in the Black Guardian, himself, arriving on the scene to make off with the Hand. It is doubtful the Doctors and their companions are up to defeating the Black Guardian. It is also unknown if they would be so cold as to throw the Master into a black hole. However, the Other Hand of Omega was not in truth created by Omega and while it is often erroneously believed that the word Other refers to it being simply the other Stellar Manipulator created by Omega, its true name is, The Others Hand, referring to the third ancient member of the timelord trio, The Other. He put on hold his final regeneration, so that when the time came for a new Eye to be opened, he would appear to make the sacrifice. The Other, having greater wisdom than either Rassilon or Omega, understood that his device might one day be used for purposes other than that for which it was made. And therefore he set a trap which he forewarns of in a cryptic message upon the outside of the casket. Written in ancient Gallifreyan runes, a successful roll to read will allow the reader to translate them thusly;
26

If thy Hand be used for right, The Other shall then be woken Should thy Hand be raised towards might, another shall force it open. Understanding and heeding the warning When the Hand is validly used to create a new Eye of Harmony to replace the former, the Other Hand will literally recreate, The Other Timelord. Upon full regeneration he proves quite willing to accept the sacrifice having saved his final regeneration just for that purpose. As to how he can again come to be, The Other will say only that this is his final reincarnation, saved for just this purpose. Before making his sacrifice, he will regard the other Doctors each in turn with something an expression akin to fond remembrance. The casket then begins to shimmer before becoming pure energy and streaking out towards the star. Finally, as above, the bolt of energy strikes the star and begins a chain reaction that in turn ignites a hypernova, leaving only the new Eye of Harmony where the star once existed. At this time it has become a new eye of Harmony and can be carried by one wearing the mantle. Ignoring the warning-Should the warning not be understood or heeded, and one attempt to take the Hand from its casket to wield for purposes other than that which it was designed, that person will not find the Hand within, but instead feel intense pain as though their own hand was somehow severed within the strange mists. Upon attempting to withdraw the possible stump, they find that they are being pulled into the mists! Such is the power that resistance is futile as they get pulled in and the lid slams shut. The casket then begins to shimmer before becoming pure energy and streaking out towards the star. Finally, as above, the bolt of energy strikes the star and begins a chain reaction that in turn ignites a hypernova, leaving only the new Eye of Harmony where the star once existed. From the monitor all can see that the star has grown ironically smaller as gravity now takes the upper hand in a battle that has been waged for the last ten million years. However, the TARDIS alarms begin to sound off as its delicate sensors detect neutrinos being pushed ever tighter, deep within the core of the star. The breaking point draws near and when gravity has pushed long enough, these neutrino will push back, causing a light brighter than a thousand suns. The star suddenly goes hypernova!
27

The blast is spectacular, producing a twin gamma ray burst of unimaginable intensity exploding outwards on either side of the titanic star, to be quickly followed by the main explosion of the stars outer layers being blasted through superheated gas. The explosion itself lasts only a little over one minute and when it is over, the TARDIS sensors detect deep at the center of the supernova remnant, an incredibly powerful energy signature.

The First Doctor

One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. The Doctor bids farewell to his daughter. [Meeting his second and third incarnations]: So you're my replacements a dandy and a clown. The First Doctor: Now what's a bridge for? Eh? The Second Doctor: Well, erm... The Third Doctor: Crossing? The First Doctor: Right! So stop dilly-dallying, and cross it! The Second Doctor: So youre the latest one, hmm?
29

The Fifth Doctor: Yes, and the most agreeable. The Second Doctor: Ah... certainly the most impudent. The Third Doctor: Our dress sense certainly hasnt improved much, has it? The First Doctor: Neither has our manners. [The Fifth Doctor looks mildly insulted/confused]

Appearance
He is an elderly man with no name, a scientist who speaks of being an exile, who travels through time and space in a time machine he can barely control, which is stuck in the shape of a police box. Dour, stooped and severe of expression, this first incarnation of The Doctor has to him an air of austere superiority. His long white hair is brushed straight back from a high, receding hairline to curly upward at the base of his neck. He wears a Victorian era frock coat, checkered trousers, striped vest, winged collar and tie. On the middle finger of his right hand, he wears a ring in which is set a brilliant blue stone.

Personality
The first Doctor is irritable, forgetful, rude, and sometimes untrustworthy, or at least, he is at first deeply distrustful of Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton, a pair of schoolteachers who follow the Doctor's granddaughter Susan home from school, hoping to solve the mystery of her mysterious and peculiar behavior. To stop Ian and Barbara from going to the authorities about what they've found, the Doctor willfully abducts them, dematerializing the TARDIS and sending it hurtling tens of thousands of years into the past, knowing full well he might never get them home in his battered old and malfunctioning time machine. Always a central part of The Doctor's character is an overpowering desire to gain knowledge, regardless of the consequences. It is this drive which leads him to leave his home planet in the first place and which finds him time and again placing his companions in jeapardy for the sake of his own curiosity. However, after a while of traveling with Ian and Barbara, he grows fond of them and mellows towards humans in general, growing more like the Doctor we will come to know in later years.
33

Possesions
Sonic Screwdriver This multi-functional tool is perhaps the most versatile and useful addition to the standard TARDIS Maintenance and Repair Kit. About the shape of a large fountain pen with a fiber optic sonic emitter at one end, the sonic-screwdriver works by producing pulses of ultrasound. These pulses create vibrations in matterparticularly dense solids, which can be converted and controlled as kinetic energy. Thus the sonicscrewdriver can remove nuts and bolts, drive nails, flip switches, activate or deactivate simple devices and receive feedback allowing it to analyze the composition of an object. Everlasting Matches The Doctor carries a box of everlasting matches, he explains they are made from Umbeka wood, which comes from the planet Umbeka, where winter lasts for centuries, and the summer is very hot and only last a couple of weeks. The heat from the flame makes the wood grow as fast as the flame consumes it, so the match never burns down.

34

The Second Doctor

The Second Doctors catch phrases: I should like a hat like that. When I say run, run. ...RUN! Butterfingers. Oh, my giddy aunt! Oh my word! Victoria: You probably can't remember your family. The Doctor: Oh yes, I can when I want to. And that's the point, really. I have to really want to, to bring them back in front of my eyes. The rest of the time they... they sleep in my mind and I forget. And so will you. Oh yes, you will. You'll find there's so much else to think about. To remember. Our lives are different to anybody else's. That's the exciting thing, that nobody in the universe can do what we're doing.

35

The Doctor: The best thing about a machine that makes sense is you can very easily make it turn out nonsense. Jamie: Have you thought up some clever plan, Doctor? The Doctor: Yes, Jamie, I believe I have. Jamie: What are you going to do? The Doctor: Bung a rock at it.

Appearance
In this incarnation, The Doctor appears as a middle-aged man with a mop of straight, dark hair hanging just over his eyes. He wears a dark frock coat, a blue button-up shirt and checkered trousers. His blue and white polka-dotted bow tie are generally worn loose, and dangling off-center at his shirt's open collar. When venturing out into colder climes, he is fond of wearing a bulky fur coat, tied with a simple length of secondhand rope. And tucked away inside his coat is always his prized recorder (flute).

Personality
Called the Cosmic Hobo for his trampish habits and dress, the Second Doctor is a complete turn-around to his prior incarnation. Generally happy-go-lucky and often prone to bursts of flute playing, this version of The Doctor is only too happy to veil his quick wit behind a facade of comic bumbling in order to manipulate both friend and foe alike--always though, for the greater good. While outwardly depicting himself as a warm, almost clownish buffoon, this Doctor possesses a darker, more cunning aspect to his personality, one which he usually keeps hidden in order for him to carry out his plans successfully. Despite this incarnation's almost childlike recklessness, it is always clear to his allies that a keen, deliberate intellect lurked behind every action. Although the second incarnation frequently gives the impression that he never knows what he was doing, this is simply an affectation and an act put on to fool those who would underestimate him. He also has a warmer, gentler way about him than in his earlier incarnation.
39

Paradoxically, he has a deep streak of ruthlessness, particularly when dealing with a known adversary such as the Cybermen, wiring the Tomb doors to fatally electrocute anyone trying to open them, steering an Ice Warrior fleet into the sun, or ensuring that a relatively helpless party of Daleks would all die. These actions would eventually come alienate his compainion, Victoria, who was disturbed to see this side of him. The second incarnation is also painfully aware of the need to see the "bigger picture". He believes that it is entirely proper to sacrifice a few lives if it will save millions more, a moral determination which would be found missing from many of his later incarnations (such as when the Ninth Doctor found himself unable to kill millions of humans in order to destroy the Daleks), though can be seen his seventh regeneration.. The Doctor also has a noticeably antagonistic relationship with his next incarnation on the occasions that they co-existed. At one point, their relationship proved so rocky and their personalities so different that they seemed incapable of working together without the authoritative presence of the first incarnation.

Possesions
Recorder (Flute) Beloved by the Second Doctor and often used to distract and confuse his enemies as well as to focus his own thoughts and to lighten the mood of his comrades. Thus the sonicscrewdriver can remove nuts and bolts, flip switches and even receive feedback allowing it to analyze the composition of an object. Stattenheim Remote Control A Rani engineered TARDIS remote-control. The Sixth Doctor once declared envy at seeing the Second Doctor in possession of such a device.

40

The Third Doctor

The Doctor: You know Jo, I sometimes think that military intelligence is a contradiction in terms. The Doctor: Well, I'll tell you something that should be of vital interest to you. That you, Sir, are a NITWIT! The Brigadier: Is there anything I can do? The Doctor: Yes, pass me a silicon rod. [Stirs cup of tea with it] The Brigadier: I meant is there anything UNIT can do about this space lightning business? The Doctor: [pointing to his second incarnation] Jo, it's all quite simple - I am he and he is me! The Doctor: A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting. [The Doctor and Sarah Jane hear a strange, mechanical roaring sound] Sarah Jane: That sounded awfully close. The Doctor: Some sort of subterranean wind effect, I should think. Sarah Jane: Who are you kidding?

41

The Doctor: Myself, chiefly.

Appearance
Known for his ornate fashion sense, most famously his frilled shirt, smoking velvet jackets and inverness cape outfit. He also wears his frilled shirt with a bow tie or cravat, like the Eighth Doctor. Because of this, his first and second incarnations called him a dandy. His is the first incarnation to steal clothes from a hospital, followed by his eighth and eleventh incarnations, respectively.

Personality
The third incarnation is a man of action, aggressively joining the fray whenever he can, unlike the first two incarnations who generally insinuated themselves into events discreetly. This incarnation is unafraid to pitch in with his physical skills, often bringing his mastery of Venusian aikido into play when the situation calls for it. Much like his predecessors, his keen mind is still his primary asset, and this is an incarnation who particularly loves to create and play with gadgets of all sorts. This passion displays itself both in terms of the third incarnation's scientific bent and in his love of vehicles, such as Bessie, his yellow roadster. The Doctor has a noticeably antagonistic relationship with his second incarnation. Their relationship is so rocky that in the past they were incapable of working together without the authoritative presence of the first incarnation. The nature of the second incarnation's regeneration into the third's may be the cause of their open disliking of each other. By contrast, the fourth incarnation, although he never met himself in his previous incarnation, occasionally speaks rather fondly of that form. His knowledge of the TARDIS greatly increases in this incarnation (chiefly due to practically taking it completely apart and reassembling it in an attempt to make it work); Once the Time Lords return the knowledge of how to operate it, the Doctor becomes more adept at controlling his destinations then his previous incarnations,
45

who often lacked any sort of control at all. He denies any mistake on his part if he strayed. Staunchly moral, the Doctor is every bit the gentleman, a hero of the Victorian mold and he is optimistic in most cases. He once declared a belief that life would always continue in some form.

Habits and Quirks

The third incarnation is known for his great passion for gadgets, his love of his vintage car, almost as much as he loves his TARDIS. He will also occasionally perform magic tricks. The third incarnation can at times by very touchy and argumentative, an attitude that he demonstrated repeatedly with bureaucrats and other authority figures. Being a man of action, he uses a wide variety of martial arts including Venusian Akido. And making him quite different from any of those before or after him, this incarnation particularly enjoys wine.

Possesions

The Fourth Doctor

Laurence Scarman: [beat] How could you possibly know that? The Doctor: Well, you see, Mr Scarman, I have the advantage of being slightly ahead of you. Sometimes behind you, but normally ahead of you. Laurence Scarman: I see. The Doctor: I'm sure you don't but it's very nice of you to try. The Doctor: Something's interfering with time, Mr. Scarman. And time is my business. Zygon leader: You admire our technology, human? The Doctor: Well, I'm not human; and I've seen better. The Doctor: You may be a doctor. But I'm the Doctor. The definite article, you might say. The Doctor: There's no point being grown-up if you can't be childish sometimes. The Fourth Doctors catch phrase: Would you like a jelly baby? The Fourth Doctors other catch phrase (said mostly in the latter part of his life): Hello-o-o-o Another of the Fourth Doctor's catch phrases: Come on! (often when he is the one supposed to be following) Others used, include

You're standing on my scarf.

Appearance
In his fourth incarnation, the Doctor appears as a tall, lanky man with a tangled mop of curly red-brown hair, prominent blue eyes, and an open expression. His early general attire had a Dickensian flair, consisting occasionally of a brown plaid vest and dull red neckcloth knotted at a high collar. Later in his tenure, he opts to lose the vest and neckcloth, content
49

with a mere white button up and brown trousers. However, the mainstays of his wardrobe are always a ridiculously long knit scarf (17-feet to be exact), a reddish frock coat and a wide-brimmed hat.

Personality
The 4th Doctor shared the First Doctors impatience as well as the Second's sense of humor, though his disregard for authority seemed to reach new heights. Behind the glib and unpredictable manner, this incarnation was actually quite reclusive and actively sought to separate himself from the rest of humanity. Thus, the 4th Doctor was by far the most aloof of those that had yet emerged, even to the point that he resented the intrusion of his own race. However, despite his most strenuous oaths not to involve himself in the affairs of others, when he witnessed an injustice done, he would always, in the end, find himself intervening. And it should be noted that while the 4th doctor often played the bumbler, his ego ultimately demanded he call the shots. Of course, most often he was the only one up to this task, a fact of which he was not adverse to reminding those around himsometimes quite loudly.

Posessions
Jellybabies These small, multi-colored, fruit-flavored confections are strongly recommended by the Doctor. According to his reports, they serve almost any purpose, from giving one a quick boost in blood sugar to providing for universal coinageas most intelligent species find them both pretty to look upon and tasty. The technology used to produce these wonders are not particularly advance, but those manufactured on Temporal Nexus Point Earth, in it's middle to late 20th century within the region commonly known as Great Britain, seem to be best. When faced with a threat that could end the universe, the 4th Doctor can often be found pondering the solution whilst munching upon a jellybaby. A delicious treat which he'll kindly offer to both friend and foe alike. Scarf This long, multicolour-striped scarf, which the Doctor claimed was knitted for him by a, Madame Nostradamus (described by the Doctor as "a witty little knitter"), is perhaps the one image people most associate with this incarnation of the Doctor The scarf of the Doctor is approximately 17 feet in length and knit of a strong and warm fabric. It serves many purposes for him, for instance, by placing a rock or similar weight within the folds of his scarf, the Doctor can transform his scarf into an effective flail like weaponan old trick he learned from an ancient Indian cult of Thuggees. The Doctor is in truth always finding new uses for his beloved scarf, when he is not tripping over it. Sonic Screwdriver About the shape of a large fountain pen with a ring and cone sonic emitter at one end, the sonic-screwdriver produces pulses of ultrasound which can be converted and controlled as

kinetic energy. Thus the sonic-screwdriver can remove nuts and bolts, flip switches and even receive feedback allowing it to analyze the composition of an object.

The Fifth Doctor

The Doctor: Which is the quickest way out of here? [Each of the women at the fountain point in different directions.] The Doctor: Yes. Well, That's democracy for you. Come on. The Doctor: It's times like this I wish I still had my scarf. The Doctor: [After bidding his past incarnations farewell.] Well, I'm still not the man I used to be... [in relief] Thank Goodness. The Fifth Doctor: That could blow a hole in the space-time continuum, the size of--[The Tenth Doctor turns the TARDIS console screen towards him and he then continues]... actually, the exact size of Belgium. That's a bit undramatic, isn't it? "Belgium"? The Second Doctor: So youre the latest one, hmm? The Fifth Doctor: Yes, and the most agreeable. The Second Doctor: Ah... certainly the most impudent. Appearance
In this incarnation, The Doctor appears as a young man in his twenties. A middling tall, slender, handsome man with longish blond hair parted vaguely to the right. His pleasant, boyish features are unlined with care and his eyes are clear and blue. In this form, he always dresses in a crisp white cricket sweater, a tan frock coat with a single orange stripe upon his lapels and each forearm. Striped trousers meet white tennis shoes and at his left lapel, a fresh stick of celery. In addition, the Doctor is often fond of sporting a wide brimmed Panama hat for protection against the elements.

54

Personality
The Doctor's fifth regeneration proves to be much more reckless then that of his earlier incarnations, often making mistakes that put his companions at needless risk. Like his first incarnation, he can be very cutting in his criticisms, yet this is quickly forgiven by his ready wit and zest for life. Like his third incarnation, he shows a steady resolve and a steadfast regard for humanity. However, unlike his predecessors, he is not as inclined to rely on gadgetry to resolve situations, rather he would rather turn to solutions with whatever is currently at hand. In addition, he differs from those before him in that he is less prone to direct the action, preferring instead to act as part of the team to reach a resolution. The fifth incarnation is probably the most human and vulnerable of all the Doctors. He is less pretentious and selfish, often reacting to situations rather than initiating them and openly expressing his hopes and fears to his companions. He can decipher the ingredients of a drink by smell alone and rosemary makes him sneeze. His young appearance is reflected in the youthfulness of his companions as well, whom he treats more like parts of a team than their usual subordinate role under previous incarnations.

The Sixth Doctor

The Doctor: Ahhh... a noble brow. Clear gaze. At least it will be given a few hours sleep. A firm mouth. A face beaming with a vast intelligence. My dear child what on Earth are you complaining about? It's the most extraordinary improvement. Peri: Improvement?! On what?! The Doctor: My last incarnation... oh, I was never happy with that one. It had a sort of feckless "charm" which simply wasn't me Peri: What absolute rubbish! You were almost young, and you were sweet. The Doctor: "Sweet?!" [scoff] Effete! Sweet? Sweet? That says it all. No, this has been a timely change. [Pauses, and stares into space] Change? What change? There is no change... no time, no rhyme, no place for space, nothing! Nothing but the grinding engines of the universe, the crushing boredom of eternity! [Collapses into a rack of coats and starts laughing hysterically, while Peri looks concerned] [Referring to the TARDIS] Ravensworth: What precisely do you do in there?
56

The Doctor: Argue, mainly. Peri: Perhaps you should see a doctor. The Doctor [annoyed]: Are you trying to be funny? The Doctor: Herbert, could you read off the numbers you see on that screen immediately in front of you? Herbert: Of course! This one? The Doctor [exasperated]: How many screens do you see immediately in front of you? Herbert: Just the one. The Doctor: That's the one. The Doctor: This is a situation that requires tact and finesse. Fortunately, I am blessed with both. Appearance
In this incarnation, The Doctor appears as a man in his early thirties with wavy, reddishbrown hair and a heavy-set build. Of all his incarnations, it is during this time he wears his most flamboyant attire, a veritable explosion of color totally consistent with his loud, brash and extremely arrogant personality. His usual ensemble consisting of a multi-textile patchwork frock coat worn over a red paisley vest, a white button-up shirt with a single strip of blue with white polka-dots down the center, and red-striped trousers! In addition to which he is known to favor upon occasion, a multi-hued umbrella.

Personality
That aside, the Sixth Doctor is a departure from his usually more reasonable past selves, for in this incarnation, he is much more volatile, often manic and extremely egotistical (even for the Doctor). That said, his technological prowess are at least on par with his ego, case in point, it was only during this incarnation that he was actually able to successfully manipulate the TARDIS Chameleon Circuit, allowing it to again assume forms that blended it in with its surroundings as opposed to simply assuming the familiar form of the police box. The Sixth Doctor's sense of superiority towards those around him, including his own companions, whom at best he seems merely to tolerate, also rises noticeably. Yet despite these negatives, the Sixth Doctor still holds at heart a strong sense of right and wrong, which is displayed during his own Trial back on Galifrey, during which he revealed his moral outrage at his own fellow Gallifreyans for the part they played in the deaths of the greater part of Earths population. The Sixth Doctor is loud, arrogant and often grating. However, he is also highly intelligent, noble and kind-hearted.

The Doctor [referring to an antique telephone]: Are these antiques dotted about all over the building? It really is a splendid piece of audioarchitectonicalmetrasynchosity! The Doctor: A stitch in time... takes up space. The Doctor: You can always judge a man by the quality of his enemies.

The Doctor: This may qualify as the worst miscalculation since life crawled out of the seas on this sad planet. The Doctor: The more I know me, the less I like me. Mel: Oh all right, you win.

60

The Doctor: I do? I usually do. The Doctor: Anybody remotely interesting is mad in some way. The Doctor [the final lines of the original series]: There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace. We've got work to do.

Appearance
At the beginning of his seventh incarnation, the Doctor wore an off-white safari-styled jacket. He wore a red paisley scarf under the lapels and had a matching handkerchief in the left pocket. He wore a yellow pullover with turquoise zigzag lines and red question marks. Under the pullover he wore a white shirt with red tie. For trousers, he wore sand-coloured tweed plaid trousers with white and brown brogued spectator shoes. He also wore a white colonial-styled Panama hat. The hat had a paisley hat band and an upturned brim, similar to the hat he wore in his fifth incarnation. When the Doctor's personality began to change, his outfit changed alongside it. His jacket, hat band, handkerchief, scarf and tie have all become darker, varying between shades of burgundy and brown. Like many of his previous incarnations, he favors a fob watch as part of his clothing and carries an umbrella which has a red, question mark shaped handle.

64

Personality
The personality of the seventh incarnation is originally much more light-hearted and prone to clownish behavior, which masks the Doctor's intellect and courage against evil. However, as he matures, he takes on a much darker turn. This "darker" side will come to define him, as a master manipulator. The seventh Doctor sees the battle between good and evil as a game of chess and everyone around him are pawns, to be manipulated in the pursuit of stopping evil. Frequently, he will only see the "bigger picture" rather than the world before him. And often as not, he does not sufficiently explain this bigger picture to his companions. An example of this occurred when the Doctor devastated Ace by labeling her, among other things, an "emotional cripple" during his battle with Fenric. This was necessary in order for her to briefly abandon her belief in him, weakening Fenric's power, a fact that he did not explain until later. Despite his manipulative actions, such as using psychic powers to make Mel leave, the seventh incarnation does care for his companions and has a paternal relationship with Ace, which ultimately sours when Ace finds herself unable to deal with the Doctor's growing emotional coldness. However, the seventh incarnation is not all doom and gloom. He maintains a light-hearted nature well into his manipulative days, and particularly seems to relish a good puzzle. He is also not totally unfeeling when it comes to the "bigger picture"; he appears greatly apprehensive about his decision to destroy Skaro, and is agonized when he has to convince Ace otherwise.

Habits and Quirks

The seventh incarnation was a consummate fan of the game of chess, to the point of treating his companions and enemies as pieces on a chess board. Despite being known for his dark personality, the seventh incarnation was known for his use of words to resolve problems instead of violence. He also rolled his Rs, due to the fact that this incarnation spoke with a Scottish accent. He liked to carry around a question mark umbrella, often using it for practical purposes unrelated to keeping the rain away. A habit occasionally displayed was a tendency to mangle and combine earth idioms, such as "Time and tide melt the snowman" and "A stitch in time... takes up space". Also, early into this incarnation, the Doctor showed a knack for playing the spoons as a musical instrument, though this was seen less as he matured.

The Eighth Doctor

The Doctor: Who am I? WHO...AM...I?! The Doctor: I know who I am! I...AM...THE DOCTOR! The Doctor: I love humans. Always seeing patterns in things that aren't there. The Doctor: Look over there! On the other side of your galaxy, that's home. Grace: [astonished] Gallifrey. The Doctor: 250 million light years away. That's a good 10 minutes in this old thing. The Doctor: In all my travels through space and time, and nearing the end of my seventh life, I was finally beginning to realise that you could never be too careful. The Doctor: Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative. Samantha: Oscar Wilde said that! The Doctor: [walking off] Was it? Appearance
In this incarnation, The Doctor was at or perhaps just over six feet in height and of a slender build, being almost gaunt with high cheeckbones. Blue eyed and clean shaven, the Doctor's hair was brown and fell past his shoulders; most often simply combed straight and wore unbound. His outfit during this time consisted of a dark green velvet frock coat, a silver waist coat and a cravat, which he found in the hospital after regenerating. He also wore a pair of dress shoes given to him by Grace Halloway. Later, as his adventures continued, he would from time to time favor a top hat as well. All things considered, The Doctor seemed like a refugee of Europe's 18th century.

Personality
This incarnation was more romantic than his predecessors, and much more open in his admiration for humans. While earlier incarnations, especially the First and Seventh would be visibly exasperated by Human failings and quirks, this Doctor was more likely to be quietly amused. The eighth incarnation also behaved in a more Human like manner than his predecessors.

68

The eighth incarnation exhibited a habit of giving people, even strangers, hints about their future, while not expressing outright the nature of that future, with one exception. This incarnation also had a tendency to repeat someone's name when he was trying to make a point, or when he got excited. The Doctor also had quite a bit of experience in pickpocketing, something unseen from any other incarnation and was also very afraid of heights. The Doctor could be deeply defeated by the trauma of long imprisonment and was averse to hospitals. Perhaps as a holdover from the Second Doctor, the Eighth Doctor enjoyed playing the violin, harpsichord, flute, transverse cello, harp, banjo, theremin, wobbleboard and the piano.

Origin Discrepancies
At one point, the Doctor remarked that he was half-Human on his mother's side. A later adventure revealed that the eighth incarnation had tricked the Master into believing he was half-Human through the use of a Chameleon Arch.

The Ninth Doctor

Rose: Hold on, if you're an alien, why do you sound like you're from the North? The Doctor: Lots of planets have a north! The Doctor: Sonic Blaster. 54th century. Weapons factory at Villengard? Jack: You've been to the factories? The Doctor: Once. Jack: Well they're gone now. Destroyed. Main reactor went critical. Vaporized the lot. The Doctor: Like I said: once. There's a banana grove there now. I like bananas. Bananas are good. The Doctor: It's my nose; it has special powers. Nancy: Yeah? That why it's so...? The Doctor: What? Nancy: Nothing. The Doctor: What? Nancy: Nothing. Do your ears have special powers too? Doctor Constantine: Before this war began, I was a father and a grandfather. Now I'm neither, but I'm still a doctor. The Doctor: Yeah. I know the feeling. The Doctor: I saw the Fall of Troy! World War Five! I was pushing boxes at the Boston Tea Party! Now I'm gonna die in a dungeon.... [disgustedly] in Cardiff! The Doctor: The thing is, Adam, time travel is like visiting Paris. You can't just read the guidebook, you've got to throw yourself in! Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, get charged double and end up kissing complete strangers! Or is that just me?

70

The Doctor: You think it'll last forever: people and cars and concrete. But it won't. One day it's all gone. Even the sky. [long pause] My planet's gone. It's dead. It burned, like the Earth. It's just rocks and dust. Before its time. Rose: What happened? The Doctor: There was a war, and we lost. Rose: A war with who? [The Doctor doesn't answer, seemingly lost in thought.] What about your people? The Doctor: I'm a Time Lord. I'm the last of the Time Lords. They're all gone. I'm the only survivor. I'm left traveling on my own, 'cause there's no one else.

Appearance
In stark contrast to the extravagant dress of most of his predecessors, the ninth incarnation wears a plain leather jacket, once mistaken in World War II for that of a German U-boat
72

commander. He either wears a plain red, green, navy blue, or black jumper, which as Charles Dickens once commented, made him look like he was in the navy. In addition, his attire consists of dark trousers and a black, strapped wristwatch, again unlike his previous incarnations, who favored fobwatches. He wears his hair close-cropped, much unlike many his previous incarnations who had had longer hair. He has two large ears and he considers his nose also large.

Personality
This incarnation of the Doctor is very emotional and deeply affected by his actions during the Last Great Time War. However he is capable of hiding his sorrow with a facade of manic energy and a sharp, offbeat wit. Nevertheless the weight of having seemingly destroyed both the Time Lords and the Daleks preys upon him greatly, creating a more emotional incarnation, who can easily be saddened, or angered. Consequently, it also creates an incarnation who harbours a new appreciation for the wonders of the universe and who, more keenly than ever, burns with a desire to keep the universe safe from harm. Despite this, this incarnation of the Doctor is more adept at noticing the flaws of humanity than any of his predecessors. When questioned by the Emperor of the Daleks about whether he was a coward or a killer the Doctor struggled with the decision to destroy the Daleks and the Earth or simply allow the Dalek's to kill him and take over the universe. In the end he couldn't bring himself to destroy the Earth even to rid the universe of the Daleks and claimed that he was a coward.

Habits and Quirks

The ninth incarnation speaks with a distinctive Northern accent. When Rose questioned this, he replied that "lots of planets have a North." He is also critical of his own large ears. He has a fondness for saying "fantastic", with emphasis on the second syllable, whenever he sees something of interest and especially something dangerous. During times of frustration, the ninth Doctor is often prone to referring to humanity, as "stupid apes. He carries about him an air of mystery, and rarely speaks of his past to others. The ninth incarnation will also grin whenever he was quite happy or found something funny and also has a habit of being a little overconfident with his plans, even when he doesn't think they will work. He has a fondness for bananas and does "not do domestic!

Appearance
The Tenth Doctor is a very handsome man with a tall, thin build, dark brown hair, pale skin and rabid dark brown eyes. Despite not turning out ginger, the tenth Doctor is happy with his hair, wearing it in various ways throughout his adventures. He would wear it un-styled, in a fifties-style quiff, or flattened forwards. For the early minutes of his life, the Doctor continued to wear the clothes his previous incarnation had on at the time of his regeneration. After arriving in London and collapsing, he was placed in a set of pajamas and a dressing gown, which he kept until the end of his first adventure, when he chose a new outfit. This incarnation has several variations of dress.
77

He has two main suits, a dark brown suit with blue pinstripes and a blue suit with red pinstripes. On rare occasions, he will don a tuxedo. Under his suits he usually wears a shirt and a tie, or wears an open-necked shirt with a t-shirt underneath. He has a red-hued tshirt, a brown t-shirt or a purple t-shirt. Both brown and blue suits are often accompanied by a light brown overcoat, which the Doctor claims have been given to him by Janis Joplin. His footwear choices are trainers, more specifically, Converse All Stars. He varies the colours from cream, to go with his brown suit, black, for wearing with his tuxedo and on a few occasion with his brown suit, or burgundy, to go with the blue suit. Another part of the Doctor's attire is a pair of dark tortoise-shell rectangular frame glasses, which he calls "brainy specs". Although he is seen to put them on from time to time, he once confessed that he didn't really need them, and simply used them because they made him look more clever. At one time, the Doctor used his sonic screwdriver to turn the lens into shades. His favourite variation of dress seems to be his brown suit with blue pinstripes, a light blue shirt, a tie and cream Converse All Stars.

Personality
This incarnation is very cheerful, charismatic and enthusiastic, often at inappropriate times, even when in danger. While previous incarnations intentionally flouted social conventions, the tenth incarnation is genuinely shocked when he is rude or uncouth. He frequently gets into trouble because of his fast and loose sense of superiority. The tenth incarnation retains and even exceeds his last incarnation's capacity for righteous anger, which was especially shown when Rose was threatened or at risk. When driven by anger or justice, he will act without hesitation to strike down those who opposed him, such as causing the downfall for, as he saw it, mass murder. There is an undeniable shadow cast over the enthusiasm at these times, and a ruthlessness seems to take over, one that is eerie to behold. While he has resolved much of the survivor's guilt felt previously, the Doctor has begun to feel his age. Beneath his youthful veneer and outward playfulness is a very old man who has seen many terrible things. He feels a deep loneliness and his keen sense of loss leads him to empathize with those who had also suffered. This incarnation has a very forgiving nature, offering to help Dalek Caan even though he had committed genocide. He also forgave the Master for all the atrocities he committed while he was ruling the Earth, which included turning his TARDIS into a paradox machine, torturing his companions for pleasure and turning him into an incredibly ancient man. However when his patience reachs its limit, his enemies get no second chance, a fact he bluntly states shortly after defeating the leader of the Sycorax. . When he ran from the Family of Blood, he was showing them mercy, saving them from his rage. When they continued to hunt him, killing innocent people and separating him from his love interest, Joan Redfern, in the process, the Doctor lost his temper and gave each member of the

78

Family of Blood an eternal punishment, fulfilling their wish for immortality in a twisted way. )

Habits and Quirks

This incarnation refuses to take up a weapon against an enemy. While previous incarnations had, the tenth incarnation will not, repeatedly refusing even when offered one by UNIT while attacking the Sontarans. Davros even pointed out his refusal to take up a gun, but pointed out that he turned his companions into weapons. This incarnation always attempts to find another way to solve a situation instead of violence if it was possible. He attempted to settle a dispute with the Sycorax leader without killing the leader, but was forced to when the leader betrayed his promise. Using the leader's defeat, he banished the Sycorax from Earth with the message that it was defended. He was extremely angered when Torchwood destroyed the ship afterwards.

This incarnation has long, dark hair which initially made him believe himself female. He confirmed that he wasn't by the presence of an Adams apple, but was still annoyed that he was not ginger. He has a large chin, which seems to initially unsettle him, and blue eyes. He comments on his nose though noting that he's had worse. The eleventh incarnation stole his clothing from the staff room of a hospital. The outfit consists of a plain brown tweed jacket with elbow patches, a dress shirt, a bow tie, braces, a gold wrist watch, rolled up navy-blue trousers and black boots. He sometimes changes the colour of his shirt, bow tie and braces from burgundy to blue. Since he only stole this initial outfit from Royal Leadworth Hospital, he presumably has other tweed jackets, bow ties, shirts and braces in the TARDIS wardrobe. His second jacket is checked in design though he lost it while escaping from Weeping Angels aboard the Byzantium starship. Since that incident he has resumed wearing his first jacket.

While in the National Museum, the Doctor found a fez which he became very fond of. The fez was later removed by Amy and destroyed by River Song. He still actively seeks for another fez.

Personality
The eleventh incarnation is highly energetic and very lively, demonstrating additional liveliness during his post-regenerative period. He is extremely brash and unafraid to show his eccentricities, appearing to act alien. He is extremely resourceful and quick thinking, able to spin things to his point of view, and could find positive outlooks in negative situations. When things look bleakest, he attempts to have those around him forcus on the positives that will come from the situation if they survive. When thinking about a problem, he blocks out all outside distractions, to the point where he once told Amy "you're dying, shut up" so he could solely concentrate on working out how to save her. Though he will also tell others to shut up if he fails to do something right. This incarnation shows a childlike recklessness, but always has a grander scheme behind his actions. The Doctor also has a knack for acting smug, occasionally boasting about his feats, knowledge, and reputation. He has a tendency to think aloud when he is panicking or stressed. This incarnation possesses a sense of arrogance, stating to Amy that "time is not the boss of me" and "you don't ever decide what I need to know". In addition, he appears to be more violent than his predecessor, attacking a Dalek in order to provoke it into revealing its true nature. Unlike his predescessor, the tenth Doctor, the eleventh is shown to be very hostile towards the Daleks and does not seem to share his predecessor's belief that the Daleks could ever change. Despite his aggression towards the Daleks, the Doctor still prefers to settle problems through negotiation rather than violence and reprimanded Ambrose Northover for suggesting to use weapons against the Silurians. However, the Doctor can be ruthless if necessary, such as threatening to kill Kazran if he allowed Amy, Rory and the 4001 others to die. Confronting the Silence, who had ruled the Earth in secret for millennia, he used the Silence's own powers of mind control against them, implanting a post-hypnotic suggestion in the minds of every single human being to kill the Silence on sight. The eleventh incarnation shows a tendency to refer to Amy by her surname as he finds her new one boring. This Doctor does not hide his emotions (like the First Doctor), usually making his anger obvious. However, unlike his previous incarnation, he isn't very adept at handling romance and reacted awkwardly when Amy Pond and River Song kissed him. He often straightens his bow-tie whenever he is embarrassed or uncomfortable. This incarnation seems to have resolved much of the survivor's guilt seen in his ninth and tenth incarnations, to the extent that he referred to the Last Great Time War, as simply a
83

"bad day". However when speaking to Alaya about being the last of his species, the Doctor implies that he still hasn't totally recovered from the results of the Time War. This was later shown in the bubble universe, when the Doctor was given hope that he might not have been the last of his race. When he discovered that he was, he began to cry. This incarnation is very selfless and willing to sacrifice himself for his friends or for the greater good. He closes the cracks in time despite the fact that he knows he is going to end up on the wrong side of the cracks. He also claims to hate himself more than anyone else in the universe and suggests that he does not believe himself to be a good man. Finally, the fourth Doctor believes in solving problems in the reverse order. Such as if someone tries to kill him, he will use clues from it to work backwards to the originating thing he might have done to earn such fate.

Habits and Quirks

This incarnation of the Doctor appears to have incredibly good eyesight as well as an eidetic memory, and is able to scan an entire scene and pick up little details, imploring his companions to do so as well. Since developing his eleventh taste buds, the Doctor has gained a liking for fish custard and Jammie Dodgers. Meanwhile disliking wine (which he enjoyed drinking during his third incarnation). The fourth Doctor is fond of bow ties, often defending his belief that "bowties are cool", usually when Amy recommends getting rid of it. He also has a habit of referring to other various items as "cool", usually generally unpopular things. Amongst these items are fezzes, bunk beds and Stetsons.

Psychic paper was a blank, white card that had special properties. When shown to a person, it could usually induce them to see whatever the user wished them to see printed on it.

The Master

The Doctor: You've come here to kill me, of course? The Master: But not without considerable regret. The Doctor: How very comforting. The Master: You see, Doctor, you're my intellectual equal. Almost. I have too few worthy opponents. When they've gone I always miss them. The Master: Citizens, rejoice! Your lord and master stands on high, playing Track 3! Nyssa : You killed my father. The Master: But his body remains useful. Doctor: I envy you your TARDIS, Master. Master: Excellent, Doctor, envy is the beginning of all true greatness! The Master: Predictable as ever, Doctor. The Master: I only need two things. Your submission and your obedience to MY WILL! The Doctor: You're risking the total destruction of the entire cosmos. The Master: Of course I am. All or nothing, literally! What a glorious alternative! The Master: I am usually refered to as the Master...universally. Race: Gallifreyan Age: 1400+ Sex: Male Number of Regenerations Used: 13 (in his current form, he still assumes the form of Harold Saxon, his final incarnation, as the Black Guardian has not regenerated him in the usual Time-lord fashion, but merely snagged him from the true death at the hand of Rassilion. It is rumored he was given another round of regenerations by the Time-lords in advance payment for promising to safe-guard the Cruciform during the Last Time War. A job he abandoned to save his own life.)

Appearance
Due to the interference of the Black Guardian on The Master's behalf, The Master has been again regenerated into the form of Harold Saxon. A handsome thirty-something aged man with close cropped hair and blonde eyes. However, unlike last time, he is once more in full possession of his cold and calculating faculties, just as he was when he faced the Doctor's earlier incarnations. Making him all the deadlier. He currently favors a simple, though expensively tailored dark suit.

Personality
The Master is the polar opposite of the Doctor in almost every respect. Though he retains a brilliant Time Lord mind and all of the Doctor's wit and cunning, he possesses two fatal character flaws - he is arrogant and exceptionally vain, which has led to his downfall on many occasions. By the time of his return from his yana persona, he appeared after his regeneration to have gone more insane than ever, regressing to an almost childlike state of spitefulness and obliviousness. It is implied by the Doctor that the Master's insanity has been present ever since he was eight years old. He instantaneously rejected a plea to listen by saying, "No. It's my turn. Revenge." In this instance, the Doctor, being aware of how dangerous the Master was, attempted to take on the role of a kind of mentor in an attempt to save the Master from himself: "I'm not here to kill him. I'm
87

here to save him". He pleaded with him on numerous occasions to calm down, stop what he was doing, listen and look at himself. The Master absolutely refused to listen to the Doctor on any occasion. He evinced his vanity when the Doctor confronted him with the words "I forgive you", which he had been terrified of hearing because it would significantly dent his pride. He also has an exceptionally heightened sense of his own brilliance which is far more pronounced and blatant than that of the Doctor. He referrs to himself in the third person as "your Lord and Master" on numerous occasions and has even recited a Bible-style verse of his own making to the Doctor, "...and so it came to pass that the human race fell. And I looked down, upon my new dominion as Master of All and I thought it good", revealing a penchant for fancying himself as a god. The Master holds Time Lords to be an absolutely superior race of life, automatically assuming the privilege of altering history, on the principle of: "I'm a Time Lord. I have that right" Similarly, late in the Doctor's tenth incarnation, the Doctor was heard to shout "The laws of time are mine, and they will obey me!" And finally, he was described by the Doctor as always being sort of "hypnotic".

Habits and Quirks

The Master's relationship with the Doctor is most complex. He respects the Doctor as a worthy opponent but is also obsessed with proving his personal superiority, causing him to view the Doctor both as his greatest friend and his worst enemy. He has expressed deep anger toward the Doctor, along with a desire for vengeance, once saying "No, it's my turn, revenge, best served hot". The Master often feels a pedantic need to correct people on bad grammar. The most noteworthy occasion was when he corrected Grace's "kiss as good as me" to "kiss as well as me". The Master once, while in disguise, corrected a holiday passerby, after being greeted during the holidays by correcting the well-wisher, "It is Happy Christmas, not Merry Christmas, after all, you wouldn't say merry New Year, now would you?"

Possessions
Laser Screwdriver:
The laser screwdriver was larger and bulkier than the Doctor's sonic screwdriver and generally used as a weapon. It incorporated various technologies, including most held by the more traditional sonic screwdriver. In the past it contained a miniaturized temporal matter manipulation system based on the age-regression technology developed by Professor Lazarus. The laser screwdriver has isomorphic controls so only the Master can operate it. This was revealed when the Doctor attempted to shoot him with it. When a large trigger on the grip was pressed, the emitter would extend with a fierce click, and the triple-section tip would slide into place. Another button-push would release a highly lethal beam of bright yellow laser energy with a piercing whine, the force of which was enough to send a human flying several feet. A single hit to the chest proved incapacitating to Captain Jack Harkness.

88

The screwdriver is powered by an Artron crystal taken from the Doctor's TARDIS. The screwdriver was later seen in the Doctor's TARDIS, presumably taken by the Tenth Doctor. Amy Pond attached it to the console to power the ship's tractor beam. It remains to be seen if the Master will regain his laser screwdriver from the Doctors TARDIS.

Ring of the Master:

The Master's ring was an item of Gallifreyan technology that the Master wore during his incarnation known as Harold Saxon. After his death, the Master's ring was collected by a member of his cult, and was later used during his resurrection. Aside from whatever else it may hold, The Master's ring contains the stolen life essence given him by the Black Guardian. To lose it is to die!

River Song

Quotes: Hello sweetie. I hate you. Spoilers!

The Doctor: Oh, you're not, are you...? Tell me you're not archaeologists. River Song: Got a problem with archaeologists? The Doctor: I'm a time traveller. I point and laugh at archaeologists. River Song: Ah! [extending her hand for the Doctor to shake] ...Professor River Song. Archaeologist.

The Doctor: River, you know my name. You whispered my name in my ear! There's only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name. There's only one time I could... River [River smiles sweetly at the Doctor as the countdown reaches zero]: Hush, now spoilers!

River's narration: [as the Doctor walks away from the Library] When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it'll never end. But however hard you try you can't run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever, for one moment, accepts it.

90

River: They've gone into warp drive. We're losing them. Stay close. The Doctor: I'm trying! River: Use the stabilizers. The Doctor: It doesn't have stabilizers! River: The blue switches. The Doctor: The blue switches don't do anything! They're just blue. River: Yes, they're blue. They're the blue stabilizers! [she flips them and the TARDIS stabilizes] See? River: Okay, I've mapped the probability vectors, done a full background temporal isometry, charted the ship to its destination and...parked us right alongside. The Doctor: "Parked us." We haven't landed. River: Of course we've landed. I just landed her. The Doctor: But...it didn't make the noise. River: What noise? The Doctor: You know the [attempts to imitate the noise the TARDIS usually makes when it lands] River: It's not supposed to make that noise. You leave the brakes on. The Doctor: Yeah, well, it's a brilliant noise. I love that noise.

Amy: How come you can fly the TARDIS? River: Oh, I had lessons from the very best. The Doctor: [flattered] Well...yeah. River: It's a shame you were busy that day.

Father Octavian [about the Doctor]: Dr. Song, I've lost good clerics today. You trust this man? River: I absolutely trust him. Father Octavian: He's not some kind of madman, then? River: [pause] I absolutely trust him.

The Doctor: Can I trust you, River Song? River Song: If you like. But where's the fun in that? [laughs] [River is beamed up to the prison ship]

Dalek: You will be exterminated! River Song: Not yet... Your systems are still restoring, which means your shield density is compromised. One alpha-meson burst through your eyestalk would kill you stone dead. Dalek: Records indicate you will show mercy. You are an associate of the Doctor. River Song: I'm River Song. Check your records again. [aims for the eye-stalk] Dalek: [uneasily] ... Mercy? River Song: Say it again? Dalek: Mercy!

91

River Song: One more time. Dalek: Mercy!!! [Cut to River rejoining Amy and Rory] Amy: What happened to the Dalek? River: [coldly] It died.

Amy: You're so his wife. River: Oh, Amy, Amy, Amy. This is the Doctor we're talking about. Do you really think it could be anything that simple?

Background
Melody Pond was born on the asteroid of Demon's Run in the 52nd century after her mother had been abducted from the 21st century. Within a month, she was replaced with a Ganger and taken by Madame Kovarian to the 20th century to be raised to kill the Doctor. She was chosen for this task because she had traces of Time Lord DNA from her conception on the TARDIS. This gave her the potential for great strength and regeneration, to pilot the TARDIS and understand complex principles of Time and Space. Melody was trained by the Silence to kill the Doctor. As a little girl, she ended up in an orphanage in 1969 America and at a warehouse in Florida. She was put in an Apollo astronaut suit upgraded with alien technology. She used it to phone President Nixon directly, begging for help. (WC: Prequel (The Impossible Astronaut)) This led to her first

93

physical meeting with the Doctor and her mother shooting at her. She returned to the orphanage, but Silents arrived. She forced her way out of the suit and fled. Six months later, in New York City, dying, she regenerated into a new incarnation. By the late 1990s, she was an adolescent in Leadworth called Mels. She was a close friend of her parents, who had no idea she was their daughter. She was often in trouble, with outbursts of reckless criminal behaviour. She obsessed over Amelia's "Raggedy Doctor", dreamt of marrying him and claimed in school that historical disasters were his fault because he did not intervene. All the while, she knew Amy and Rory were her parents and that she intended to kill the Doctor. When the TARDIS landed in a Leadworth cornfield in 2011, Mels forced her way onboard at gunpoint and crashed it in Adolf Hitler's office in 1938, inadvertently saving Hitler from the Teselecta. He shot her. Stunning the Doctor and her parents, she regenerated into River Song. Acting on her conditioning, she tried to kill the Doctor with guns and poisoned lipstick. She cheerily called herself a psychopath and ran amok in Berlin, yet showed empathy for the Doctor's devotion to her parents, jealousy of the "River Song" he kept mentioning and compassion for his struggle to save her from the Teselecta. She demanded to know who River was. Amy ordered the Teselecta to show her. It morphed into the form of her new incarnation. She asked her parents if the Doctor was "worth it". When they said yes, she sacrificed her remaining regenerations to save him. The Doctor took River to the "best hospital in the universe" to recover. Knowing of her future as his on-and-off companion, he left a gift at her bedside: a TARDIS-shaped diary. After recuperating, she entered the Luna University shortly before her birth. When asked why she wished to study archaeology, she said she was "looking for a good man". The day River received her doctorate, Kovarian appeared with agents of the Church and Silents. They seized her, forced her into a modified astronaut suit, took her to Utah on 22 April 2011 and submerged her in Lake Silencio to await the Doctor. However, when the time came to kill him, River drained her weapon pack thereby defying a fixed point in time. Time shredded into a reality where every moment happened at once. She refused to rectify her error, but after wedding what appeared to be the Doctor, she went through with his apparent murder to restore the timeline, knowing he was really the Teselecta. River was sentenced to twelve thousand consecutive life sentences in the Stormcage Containment Facility in the 52nd century for the Doctor's murder. She served the sentence to make the Silence believe him dead, but starting with her first night, escaped often to spend time with her husband, then returned to her cell. On one birthday, the Doctor took her to the last Winter Frost Fair on the River Thames in 1814. Stevie Wonder unwittingly performed before being restored to his proper time. Returning to Stormcage, River met Rory in his Roman garb. She refused to come aid them at Demon's Run, saying she couldn't be there "until the very end". She had already met the Doctor, Amy and Rory at the end of the Battle of Demon's Run in the 52nd century minutes after Kovarian had fled with her first incarnation. She had revealed her identity, first to the Doctor and then to her parents. On receiving an invitation from the Doctor, River escaped from Stormcage to meet Amy, Rory and him in Utah in America on 22 April 2011. The Doctor took them on a picnic where he was shot. They burned his body, then went to a cafe to find a version of the Eleventh Doctor two hundred years younger than the one who had died. River knew the assassin was an earlier version of herself and the dead Doctor was the Teselecta. River helped the Doctor defeat the Silence by using their brainwashing of humanity against them, all the while making sure she did not meet her first incarnation. At her request, the Doctor returned her to Stormcage, where she kissed him. He was shocked and she realised that from his perspective, it was their first kiss: from hers, probably their last. The TARDIS rerouted a phone call for the Doctor from Winston Churchill to River. She escaped to warn the Doctor of a prophecy of the TARDIS exploding. She blackmailed a Time Agent's vortex manipulator off Dorium Maldovar, stole a painting from Liz Ten, graffitied a diamond cliff at the dawn of time, then travelled to the Roman era of Earth to meet the Eleventh Doctor and Amy.

94

The Pandorica lay under Stonehenge, transmitting a signal to summon an alliance of the Doctor's enemies. The Doctor got them to back off and sent River to fetch the TARDIS. Instead, it took her to Amy's house on 26 June 2010. When River told him the date, the Doctor realised the TARDIS was about to explode and told her to escape. Instead, she was trapped in a time loop of the first moments of the explosion. The Doctor rescued her in 1996, told her his plan to use the Pandorica's restoration field to reverse the erasure of the universe and was shot by a Stone Dalek. River told the Dalek to look in its data banks for her, taunted it into begging for mercy, then killed it. After the Doctor had restored the universe by erasing himself, River left her now blank diary at her parents' wedding so Amy could remember him back into existence. After a brief conversation about her marital status and identity, River said he was "going to find out very soon now and I'm sorry, because that's when everything changes" and left him wondering. River was put in Father Octavian's custody in the 51st century for a mission to earn her pardon. She infiltrated the Galaxy Class Byzantium to find its Home Box, into which she carved "Hello Sweetie" in Old High Gallifreyan and her temporal coordinates. This attracted the Doctor's attention twelve thousand years later, leading Amy and him to her and Alfava Metraxis. They defeated an army of Weeping Angels which had awakened in the planet's Maze of the Dead. After this adventure, she visited Amy and Rory after the Doctor had "died" and exposed the truth behind many lies to her parents. The Doctor took River to Darillium to see the Singing Towers. Along the way, she met an earlier version of the Doctor and just missed two earlier versions of herself. She later said he had wept as he said goodbye. He knew, although she did not, that her death was imminent. He gave her an upgraded version of his sonic screwdriver. In the 51st century, River, now a professor, was hired by Strackman Lux for an expedition to the Library to learn what had happened there a hundred years earlier. A cryptic message had been sent: "4022 saved. No survivors." Expecting trouble, she contacted the Doctor by psychic paper. The version of the Doctor who turned up had not yet met her. Bewildered, he agreed to help River's team. River still had her battered diary of her life with the Doctor. She tried to use it to find where the Doctor was in his timeline, but realised he was a far younger version who neither knew nor trusted her. As the threat of the Vashta Nerada worsened, River knew she must prove she was someone he would come to trust completely. With profuse apologies, she whispered his true name into his ear. The Doctor was stunned and River had won his trust. Time was running out. The Doctor was about to kill himself to rescue Donna and more than four thousand others trapped in the Library datacore. River knocked him out, handcuffed him and took his place. She pleaded with him to not change their history, not one moment of what had/would come for them. She said he had always known this was coming. The Doctor began to babble questions. River smiled, said "Spoilers" and killed herself. The Doctor reasoned his future self had given River his sonic screwdriver for a purpose. Inside it was a "Neural Relay" data chip holding her Data Ghost. The Doctor saved River by uploading her into the virtual world in the Library's data core, CAL. CAL had also saved the data ghosts of her archaeological team, giving her company in the virtual world. River would take care of her two virtual children and Charlotte (the girl wired into the mainframe) in the virtual world, reading out her diary of her many adventures with the Doctor, and how sometimes "everybody lives" when the Doctor comes to call. Her story ended with her wishing her audience sweet dreams. The Tenth Doctor would remember her death when Davros asked him how many people who had died in his name.
ALTERNATE TIMELINE In an alternate timeline, River gained control of her suit's weapon system and did not kill the Doctor at Lake Silencio. A fixed point in time - his death - was ripped open; all time collapsed into a single moment, 22 April 2011 at 5:02:57pm. In this crumbling timeline, she belonged to a group seeking to fix time and yet not end his life. They were led by Amy Pond, who also remembered the original world from her exposure to the Cracks in Time. River built a distress beacon to beg the universe's help for the Doctor, to which much of the universe answered with a resounding "Yes!" She was wed to the Doctor and he revealed he was inside the Teselecta. They kissed and River killed "the Doctor" to restore the timeline.

95

Appearance
As River Song, she is a beautiful woman with long, somewhat curly light brown hair. River favors clothing that are often form fitting yet rugged. However, she is equally at ease wearing a revealing evening gown.

Personality
In her first incarnation as the 'little girl', Melody was shy, innocent and terrified of the "monsters" who had trapped her in the spacesuit. Her second incarnation, 'Mels', was saucy, often in trouble and chased by police just before her regeneration. She resented the Doctor and blamed him for historical disasters, but wanted to marry him. In her last incarnation, River is very strong-willed; though brainwashed and raised to kill him, she decided the Doctor was "worth it" and saved his life, giving up all her regenerations to do so. She resisted the upgraded astronaut suit and refused to kill him, heedless of the consequences. River is frisky and cheeky like her mother, Amy. Like her father, Rory, she is stubborn, responsible and fiercely compassionate. She enjoys showing off for the Doctor and often teases him, saying "Spoilers!" referencing her foreknowledge. She loves the Doctor wildly and cares very much for her family. River does not seem to resent being kept in prison for much of her life due to a crime she did not commit, probably because she can easily escape. She once said she was breaking into prison instead of out, implying she was perfectly content with the situation. She is joyously bloodthirsty: she killed the Stone Dalek after it had shot the Doctor, though it begged for mercy. She also slew dozens of Silents to cover the escape of the Doctor and her parents. She is confident in her abilities, intelligence and sexuality. She is flirtatious and bawdy, but becomes serious when the situation calls for it. River is not afraid to die for the Doctor the instant she decides her death can save his life. She freely took the Doctor's place to free the people saved in the computer that controlled the Library; she knocked him out and handcuffed him before hooking herself up to the computer. Before she died, she comforted him, saying although it was her last time with him, it was his first with her and he would see her again. She also offered herself to close the Time Field on the Byzantium to stop the Doctor from doing it, until he told her it wouldn't be enough.

Possessions
Sonic Screwdriver:
MARK ?
The Eleventh Doctor created this version at an unknown point in his life before River's final date with him at the Darillium Singing Towers. This version of the sonic screwdriver had the Mark VI's settings along with "dampers" and a "red setting" that allowed it to work without interference from Doctor Moon. The Doctor gave it to River Song so she would be ready when she met his tenth incarnation in The Library. Unknown to her, this version included a Neural Relay which would save her Data Ghost for uploading into the main computer of The Library. This multi-functional tool is perhaps the most versatile and useful addition to the standard TARDIS Maintenance and Repair Kit. About the shape of a large fountain pen with a ring and cone sonic emitter at one end, the sonic-screwdriver works by producing pulses of ultrasound. These pulses create vibrations in matterparticularly dense solids, which can be converted and controlled as kinetic energy. Thus the sonicscrewdriver can remove nuts and bolts, flip switches and even receive feedback allowing it to analyze the composition of an object.

96

Sonic Blaster:
The blaster uses digital technology to create a sonic wave, projected into the form of pulsing squares of blue light, which can cut through thick walls. It also has a reverse function which can replace the removed chunk of material afterwards. This is deemed a "special feature" of the blaster, and uses up a lot of its battery power. In the hands of the Doctor and his friends, the blaster has never been used as an offensive weapon, but rather as a tool for a means of escape or forced entry. The blaster does not seem to affect humans. When Rose used it to create a hole in a floor, it did not injure her, Jack's or the Doctor's feet in the process.

Hallucinogenic Lipstick:
Hallucinogenic lipstick is a type of lipstick notable for creating hallucinations in people kissed with it, though apparently not in those wearing it. In 5145, while River Song is imprisoned in the Stormcage Containment Facility, she uses it on her guard and escapes. When reinforcements arrive, they find the guard pointing a gun at a stick drawing she had left on the wall and saying that her trick has failed. After travelling Egypt in 102 A.D., River used it to fool the Roman soldiers into thinking she was Cleopatra, even though the real Cleopatra was dead. Despite their true identity, it still worked on them, as their human disguises were perfect. She later used it on a security guard aboard the Byzantium, making him believe he was in the middle of a field on a sunny day. After finding the guard, Alistair deduced from the lipstick that Song was aboard the ship.

Diary:
River Song kept a diary of her adventures with the Doctor. The cover was blue and resembled the exterior of the Doctor's TARDIS. Since the diary was written from River's point of view, she didn't let the Doctor read it, teasingly saying "Spoilers" and often putting her finger on her lips. The book acted as an indicator of where the Doctor was in his personal timeline; whenever River met him, she would name events she had experienced with the Doctor to see if Doctor had experienced them yet. River's diary was a gift from the Eleventh Doctor after she had saved his life, to maintain the timeline of her keeping track of their relationship. (DW: Let's Kill Hitler) While River Song was studying at the Luna University, she did research on the Doctor, and learned a story he was going to die at 5:02pm on April the 22nd, 2011, at Lake Silencio. She recorded this in her diary. River brought her diary with her on a trip with the Eleventh Doctor, shortly after she had been imprisioned in the Stormcage Containment Facility. There, the Doctor explained his rules for the diary: River was to use it to keep track of their meetings and adventures together. After returning from a trip with the Eleventh Doctor for her birthday, River met Rory Williams at Stormcage. She checked her diary to be sure of where the Doctor was in his timeline. In 2011, River and an 1103-year-old version of the Eleventh Doctor compared diaries. At this point in his timestream, the Doctor had a similar diary. In the 52nd century, in Stormcage, River wrote in her diary before taking a phone call from Winston Churchill and escaping. After the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor reset the universe, River gave Amy Pond her diary as a wedding present, though all its pages were empty. This helped Amy remember the Doctor and bring him back. Later, the Doctor returned the diary to River, telling her that all the writing had returned, but that he had not peeked.

97

After the crash of the Byzantium, Amy asked River what her diary was. The Eleventh Doctor, who had yet to experience many events recounted in it, told her to stay away from it. When the Tenth Doctor met River Song for the first time from his perspective, she attempted to "do diaries" with him, naming events which they had gone through together. He did not know who she was. When the Doctor tried to read the diary, River stopped him and told him that, by his own rules, he was not allowed to read it. After the events in the Library and River's death, the Doctor left her diary in the biography section of the Library. Donna Noble and he considered reading it to find out their futures, specifically Donna's (given River's reaction to her identity), but chose not to.

Captain Jack Harkness

Captain Jack: Ready for you. Hold tight! Rose: To what? Captain Jack: Fair point. Rose: So, um, who're you supposed to be then? Jack: Captain Jack Harkness. 133 Squadron, Royal Air Force. American volunteer. Rose: Liar. This is psychic paper. It tells me whatever you want it to tell me. Jack: How do you know? Rose: Two things. One, I have a friend that uses this all the time. And two, you just handed me a piece of paper telling me you're single and you work out. Jack: The London Blitz is great for self-cleaners. Pompeii's nice if you want to make a vacation of it though. But you gotta set your alarm for Volcano Day. Jack: Who has a sonic screwdriver? The Doctor: I do! Jack: Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks, "Ooh, this could be a little more sonic."? Rose: You used to be a Time Agent and now you are trying to con it?

Captain Jack: If it makes me sound any better, its not for the money. Rose: Its for what? Captain Jack: Woke up one morning when I was still working for them, found they had stolen two years of my memories. Id like em back. Rose: They stole your memories? Captain Jack: Two years of my life: no idea what I did. Your friend over there doesnt trust me, and for all I know he is right not to. Background
Captain Jack Harkness was the alias adopted by a Time Agent and con man from the 51st century who became an associate and occasional companion of the Doctor. He was made reluctantly immortal by the Bad Wolf entity and stranded on Earth from the mid-19th to the early 21st century. During much of that time, he worked for Torchwood Three until its destruction in 2009. He left Earth in 2010 and did some soul-searching. However, he returned to Earth in 2011
101

when Miracle Day spread across the world. Jack decided to stay on Earth afterwards and establish a new Torchwood team. Jack was born under a different name, which he concealed. He grew up in the 51st century in an era when attitudes towards sex differed from those prevalent in the 21st century. ATTACK ON THE BOESHANE PENINSULA Jack was reared on the Boeshane Peninsula, a sandy, beach-like area. He spent time with his brother Gray and his father, Franklin, playing cricket and singing around campfires. One day, an unknown enemy invaded his homeland and killed many of the inhabitants. His father told Jack to flee with Gray, while he went back for Jack's mother. As they ran, Gray stumbled and Jack let go of his hand. Jack continued to run, thinking Gray was behind him. Jack hid in a bush while the invaders flew overhead. He returned home hoping to find his brother, but found only his dead father and his distraught mother. Jack said it was the worst day of his life. He spent many years searching for his brother unsuccessfully. Jack buried the memory of what happened that day and eventually lost his happier memories of before his father's death. GROWING UP As a young man, he persuaded a friend to "join up" with him to fight an unspecified enemy Jack described only as "horrible". They were captured. The enemy thought Jack's friend the weaker of the pair and tortured him as a lesson for Jack. They let Jack go, to bear the guilt of his friend's fate. Once, when sentenced to death, he ordered four hypervodkas as a last meal and ended up bedding both executioners at the same time. He recalled them as a lovely couple who kept in touch. AS TIME AGENT AND CON ARTIST Jack worked as a Time Agent with John Hart, a partner in more than one context. They once spent five years trapped in a two-week time loop, becoming the equivalent of a married couple after spending so much time together. Hart admitted to having been "a good wife", closing an argument between the two as to the details of the relationship. Jack found that the Agency had erased two years of his memory, which he wanted back. He left the Agency and became a time-travelling con artist, running scams using his knowledge of future events. His preferred schemes involved collecting payment for items he knew would be destroyed before the buyer could see it. Finding pieces of space junk and directing them to the soon-to-be disaster sites, Jack would sell them to passers-by, then allow the items to be destroyed before the buyers could pick up their merchandise. At some point, he acquired a small, sleek Chula spacecraft fitted for human use, which could turn invisible. In 1941, he assumed the alias of an American volunteer, Captain Jack Harkness, who had died in action the January prior. He knew very little about the real Jack, other than basic information such as the date and manner of his death. MEETING THE DOCTOR Jack with Rose and the Ninth Doctor.

102

While running a scam involving a Chula ambulance in the London Blitz, he spotted Rose Tyler hanging from a barrage balloon. He rescued her and took her aboard his ship. Deducing she came from the future, he thought the Doctor and she were time agents. (DW: The Empty Child) Rose introduced him to the Ninth Doctor and crushed his dream of conning the Time Agency. The trio stopped the plague brought about by the ambulance's nanogenes. Jack took an active German bomb ready to explode in his ship to save many people and was almost killed himself. However, the TARDIS materialised in his ship and the Doctor and Rose rescued him before the ship exploded. Jack became a new companion for the Doctor, to the delight of both Rose, who found Jack attractive, and Jack, who found both Rose and the Doctor likewise. (DW: The Doctor Dances) The trio shared numerous adventures together and clicked as a team to the point where Mickey Smith found himself an outsider during a shared adventure. Jack was aboard Satellite Five when a Dalek fleet launched their assault on Earth. He was killed defending the satellite against them. He was resurrected by Rose Tyler holding the powers of the Time Vortex which turned her into the Bad Wolf. The TARDIS departed before he could rejoin them. Jack was left stranded on the satellite. Jack later learnt from the Tenth Doctor that this resurrection was what made him immortal. LIFE ON EARTH 19TH CENTURY After Jack was left on Satellite Five, he used the Vortex manipulator in his Time Agency wrist strap to return to Cardiff, the site of an active space-time rift. Jack ended up in 1869. His Vortex manipulator burned out and he could not leave. Jack stayed in Cardiff, knowing that the TARDIS could re-fuel itself using the rift and he would return. Jack chose to continue using the Harkness alias, or was using when he started working for Torchwood Three. His second death and resurrection occurred when he was shot in 1892 during a fight on Ellis Island. Jack would find that he still aged, but very slowly - he noted that he had a couple of grey hairs in 2008, one hundred and thirty-nine years after arriving in Cardiff - and could recover from any degree of physical harm, including death itself, given a few minutes time. In 1898, Jack flirted with a woman (and her father) at a music hall bar. He booked a private box to watch the performance of The Amazing Anthony The Wonder of 1898 and referred to himself at the time as being on duty. Over the years of Anthony Bradshaws life, it seemed that Jack was coming to terms with his own immortality. Anthony was saved by Jack from a Lawphoram, which had fallen to Earth. Anthony, the travelling stage show boy, had failed to predict the future of Jack when he asked him how he would die. To investigate the Night Travellers, he joined a travelling show in which he was billed as "the man who couldn't die". Jack simply called who asked him to investigate them "a long story", implying that it was someone other than Torchwood. RECRUITMENT BY TORCHWOOD
103

In 1899, Torchwood Cardiff agents Alice Guppy and Emily Holroyd found out about Jack. They captured and tortured him to discover why he could not die and what connection he had to the Doctor, the Torchwood Institute's enemy. He was released on the condition that he work for Torchwood, an offer which he initially refused outright. The two asked him to reconsider this option, and Jack wound up in a bar, alone until a young cartomancer offered to read him his fortune. She gave a completely accurate prophecy of the Doctor's eventual return to Cardiff 100 years into the future. Left with nothing to do but wait for a full century until his version of the Doctor coincided with his timeline, Jack reconsidered Torchwood's offer and began working for them and awaiting the Doctor's return. On his first mission, Jack Harkness was sent to stop a criminal Blowfish, which he returned to Torchwood Three's Hub, only to see it killed by a shot to the head. He continued working for Torchwood for over a hundred years, still pursuing his goal of find the Doctor in the meantime. Shortly after this, Jack went to China during the Boxer Rebellion, where he worked with explosives. 20TH CENTURY In 1909, Jack was travelling through Lahore by train with a group of soldiers under his command, when they were killed by Fairies. Some of the soldiers had recently run over and killed one of the Fairies's Chosen Ones. In revenge, the Fairies suffocated the soldiers by forcing rose petals down their throats. Jack's presence in Lahore was part of a con intended to steal the diamond shipments the soldiers were guarding; however, he did appear to take his responsibility for the men seriously, however temporary it may have been, enough to be distressed by their deaths. His participation in the con itself was at the direction of (or at least in cooperation with) an unknown agent. Jack later left Torchwood to fight in World War I. In 1914 the Ninth Doctor met a soldier who mentioned to him that Captain Harkness had survived a bullet to the head and was recovering in the hospital. In 1918, Gerald Carter and Harriet Derbyshire brought in Tommy Brockless to be put in suspended animation and use him as a key to fix time shifts happening then and in 2008. At some point after this, Jack retrieved instructions on what to do with Tommy in a box temporally locked until the Rift met the same conditions as in 1918. Jack witnessed Tommy being awakened each year to see if he "still worked". Jack wasn't present in pictures with Gerald and Harriet circa Tommy's freezing. In 1927, Jack went to New York City on a mission to stop the Trickster's Brigade from infecting President Roosevelt's brain with a parasite. When he arrived at Ellis Island, Jack met Angelo Colasanto. The two stayed in a room in New York together and had sex. Comparing Angelo to one of the Doctor's companions, the two went to the warehouse where the parasite was being kept and killed it. As the two tried to escape, however, Jack was killed and Angelo was captured and taken to jail. The next year, after Angelo got out of jail, Jack returned claiming that he had only been playing dead. Angelo didn't believe Jack, however, and assumed that Jack was the Devil. Angelo stabbed Jack and was shocked when Jack came back to life. Jack was then chained up and repeatedly killed, since people assumed that his immortality was either a miracle or a blessing. Jack then saw three men come to the room where he was chained, but he never learned who they were.

104

Angelo decided to help Jack escape, but Jack jumped off of a building and disappeared from Angelo's life. Prior to February 1944, he met Estelle Cole. The pair spent some time in London together. She wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. Somehow, however, this never happened, and they lost touch with one another. In 1965, the alien race known as the 456, communicating through radio, set up a deal: Jack, with the involvement of Andrew Staines, Ellen Hunt and Michael Sanders, would deliver to them twelve young orphans as a "gift" at a meeting point in Scotland. In exchange for the children, the unseen aliens would give them a cure for a new strain of an Indonesian flu that the aliens claimed would mutate and kill twenty-five million people. Jack received the assignment specifically because of his immortality, and the perception, as one of the officers later told him, that he "didn't care." Despite his misgivings, Jack followed his orders, and delivered the children. Clement McDonald, however, slipped away from the exchange, and would have nightmares about Jack for the rest of his life. In 1975, Jack and another Torchwood agent, Lucia Moretti, had a daughter, Melissa Moretti, who would age normally. Lucia and Jack split up sometime prior to 1977, and at the request of her mother, their daughter was sent into the Witness Protection Program, relocated and given the name of Alice Sangster, presumably arising from her mother's fear of the immortal Captain Jack. The application was approved on 14 February, 1977; however, Jack eventually rebuilt a relationship with his daughter. Although Jack was a Torchwood agent at the time, he was still considered a freelance operative rather than a full-time employee. On several occasions during the 1990s, Jack visited the Powell Estate to watch Rose Tyler grow up, but did not approach her to avoid disrupting her timeline. EARLY 21ST CENTURY On New Year's Day 2000, Jack, now a full-time agent for Torchwood Three, suffered a major emotional blow when one of his colleagues, Alex Hopkins, suffered a nervous breakdown and killed the entire Torchwood Three staff shortly before the end of 1999. Knowing Jack couldn't die, he did not attempt to kill Jack and waited for him to arrive at the Hub before committing suicide. As the only surviving member of Torchwood Three, he would spend the next few years recruiting new members.

PERSONALITY
Jack Harkness' personality was willfully enigmatic. He enjoyed his persona of 'mysterious time traveler,' much of which remained constant in his experiences with Torchwood and the Doctor. Before being cursed with immortality, he was flippant former con man who loved adventuring with the Doctor and seducing beings throughout the universe. Jack automatically flirted with most people he met, not caring about their gender or if they were human, alien or even robots. The Doctor often told him to stop and Jack would often reply "I'm just saying hello". Besides being a flirt, Jack was a drinker. He once remarked that on one occasion when he was sentenced to death, he got drunk and ended up in bed with both his executioners. He told Rose that he preferred to discuss business while he was drinking. Jack claimed to the Ninth Doctor that before he met him he had been a coward and said that he might have been better off that way.
105

Despite the fact that he was incapable of dying even if he wanted to, Jack retained a sense of humour, frequently telling jokes and being lively and cheerful. However, underneath his cheerful demeanour, Jack was unsure if he wanted to die or not. Living forever (or at least as near to forever as a human can live) brought him to an existential viewpoint. While he joked about grey hairs and remained silent about mortality, Jack saw death as the ultimate end of being; there was no afterlife and no one waiting for him from his past lives. Although friendly and flirtatious, Jack could also be ruthless at times and did not hesitate to kill anyone or anything that he felt was a threat. This sometimes got him into trouble with his allies in Torchwood who disapproved of his lack of compassion. On one occasion Owen Harper shot him because he felt that Jack didn't care about what they had lost. Although he could be aggressive, Jack still cared deeply about his allies and was devastated when any of them were harmed or killed. Always a vocal, unreliable narrator of his own adventures, Jack was much of a mystery to the people he met as much as the countless lives he claimed to have led. Jack continued to protect himself with an air of mystery. No one he has encountered thus far knows his real name or many details about his career or life. He often told anecdotes about his sex life but, no one knew how many were real. Though he professed "responsibility" as his motto after the Year That Never Was, the utter devastation Jack experienced in the space of five days over the course of the 456 incident and the death of Ianto Jones left him wracked with guilt and grief, unable to remain on Earth. Jack was haunted by the loss of his younger brother Gray and spent many decades searching for him. He blamed himself for Gray's disappearance because he'd let go of his hand when they were fleeing from aliens during their childhood. Jack loved his brother deeply and even after Gray turned against him, Jack told him that he forgave him.

Details on Jacks Special Powers

Since his resurrection by the Bad Wolf entity, Jack could die and come back to life almost instantly, although on occasion his resurrection was delayed if he experienced enough trauma. An interesting side effect, albeit it was only used once on record, was the ability to transfer a little of his life force to another being, allowing that person to recover very quickly. He could also re-grow limbs, organs, bones, etc. After a bomb that was planted in his stomach exploded, he was able to fully regenerate from just an arm, a shoulder, and part of his head in a bit over twelve hours. His bones grew back first, followed by his internal organs, and lastly his skin. The process of resurrection could often be very painful, especially in this instance. He also endured events which might have burned or vaporised regular humans, such as stet radiation. Jack viewed this power as a curse as much as a blessing, as each time he died he did not experience anything at all, good or bad, although the process of resurrection was described as being "hauled over broken glass." Notably, although Jack quickly recovered from fatal injuries, he has been shown to sustain more minor wounds such as a cut lip or a black eye and retain them for a while after the injury was inflicted, demonstrating that his immortality was just that and would not automatically facilitate his ability to cope with less serious injuries. However, these wounds healed much more quickly

106

than the average human's, and were usually gone within a day or so, although it is unclear whether this would apply if Jack sustained potentially long-term damage such as paralysis. It was impossible to calculate how many times Jack died and resurrected since his first death from the Dalek blast. By the time John Hart killed him in a warehouse bombing, he had died at least 1,392 times, starting from 1892, when he first discovered his immortality. However, Jack was subsequently buried alive by his brother, Gray, in 27 AD, and endured a cycle of suffocation deaths and resurrection potentially millions or billions before being finally rescued in 1901. The Tenth Doctor explained to Jack about his power after their reunion: Rose resurrected him as the Bad Wolf entity with the power of the Time Vortex after his first death, when he was shot by a Dalek. She couldn't totally control the power she wielded and she brought him back forever by accident. The Doctor, then in his ninth incarnation knew from the moment it had happened and so abandoned Jack in the future. The Tenth Doctor said that Jack was a fixed point in time, an impossible thing which the Doctor had trouble even looking at and even the TARDIS tried to get rid of him. The Doctor said that he was unable to undo Jack's resurrection power and didn't know if Jack would ever truly die. During the events of Miracle Day, Jack discovered that he had lost some or all of his immortality, as he realised that wounds he sustained which should have healed quickly did not. He concluded that while everyone on Earth seemed to have become immortal, he had become mortal and human once again, although it was initially unclear whether this was a deliberate consequence of Miracle Day, or if the Miracle simply 'crossed wires' with the immortal Jack and made him mortal. It was eventually revealed that his blood was used on the Blessing to make the world immortal and it had the reverse effect on him. Once he used his mortal blood to reverse this, his immortality returned as the world returned to mortality. See "Future Possibility as the Face of Boe", below, for a potential consequence. Like other men in the 51st century, Jack possessed evolved human pheromones which made him naturally nice-smelling and attractive to others. Tosh could not use Mary's telepathy pendant to read his thoughts, although he could project thoughts to Tosh if he so chose. Tosh likened it to trying to read a dead man, and Jack confirmed that he knew someone was trying to read his mind, although it was unclear if this was a side-effect of his immortality. Jack had no other superhuman abilities as such, but was in excellent physical condition and an expert in various firearms. He demonstrated extremely fast reflexes, such as when he noticed and fired on a Dalek seconds after teleporting from Cardiff to London.

Possesions
Sonic Blaster:
54th century weapon produced at the weapons factory at Villengard, now apparently destroyed after a visit from the Ninth Doctor. The blaster uses digital technology to create a sonic wave, projected into the form of pulsing squares of blue light, which can cut through thick walls. It also has a reverse function which

107

can replace the removed chunk of material afterwards.

Chula Star Ship -- destroyed during WWII

When Rose and the Ninth Doctor first met him, Jack owned a small Chula ship, fitted out for human use. as well as psychic paper and a store of nanogenes in the ship. When saving the Doctor and Rose by carrying a German bomb a safe distance away from London, the bomb exploded inside the ship; luckily, the Doctor and Rose saved him.

World War II Webley

Jack liked to carry a World War II Webley. A durable if vintage side-arm.

Compact Laser Deluxe

The Compact Laser Deluxe was a powerful laser weapon that was extremely small though still quite noticeably sizable. Its compact dimensions were proven as Captain Jack Harkness managed to store it away somewhere "you really don't wanna know", presumably in his backside, in case of emergencies. Its only known carrier was Jack Harkness and it was used by him to destroy both the robots, Trin-E and ZuZana.

Vortex Manipulator
The main function of a vortex manipulator was to transport the user through time and space via the Time Vortex. The exact range of a vortex manipulator was uncertain. One model did allow Jack Harkness to travel nearly 200,000 years (although in this instance, said manipulator burned out after doing so). Following the Doctor's "repairs" and/or adjustments using his sonic screwdriver, the manipulator was able to travel 100 trillion years. It could transport multiple people if necessary, so long as they had some sort of physical contact with it. Manipulators could be seen as an extremely precise form of time travel when properly used. Both River Song and former Time Agent John Hart were able to reach their intended destinations quite regularly using vortex manipulators. When the universe was a fraction of its former size, a vortex manipulator was able to facilitate multiple precise jumps with no apparent difficulty and extreme precision - although admittedly, the distances and time differences involved were a great deal smaller. The vortex manipulator protected its user from the journey through the vortex. However, transporting three people appeared to result in discomfort for the users. In addition to transportation, vortex manipulators had several other functions. These included: Communication between users, including storage of messages, and listening to radio broadcasts. Projection of holograms. Tracking of life signs. Remote control of electronic devices. Muting Torchwood Three's comm system. As a "front door key" to the Torchwood Three hub. This seems to only apply to Jack's vortex manipulator

108

Playing music. Sending a signal to enrage Weevils and to bring them back to the Cardiff sewers. Detection of low sodium levels. Scanning and alteration of printed texts. Unlocking combination-locked vaults. Despite Jack's claim that the wrist-strap was DNA coded to him alone,[source needed] the fact that the Doctor, the Master and Martha were all able to use the teleporter function, as well as its detection of low sodium levels in Rex Matheson, seemed to indicate otherwise. Vortex manipulators were constructed from an as yet unidentified, but extremely durable metal. One was easily able to survive the detonation of a bomb which obliterated the human wearing it, albeit at the cost of the leather wrist-strap housing the vortex manipulator itself. A vortex manipulator also survived the explosion caused by Big Bang Two by being 're-booted' from its original form. The Tenth Doctor considered the vortex manipulator very primitive compared to a TARDIS, describing his TARDIS as a "sports car" to Jack Harkness' "space hopper". His eleventh incarnation described it as "cheap and nasty time travel, very bad for you", and stated that he was "trying to give it up".

Psychic Paper
Psychic paper was a blank, white card that had special properties. When shown to a person, it could usually induce them to see whatever the user wished them to see printed on it.
