The Great Bear Rainforest on British Columbias West Coast is a place of unmatched beauty, where thousand-year old trees, wolves, grizzlies and wild salmon thrive - where Humpback and Orca whales are a part of daily life. The regions namesake, the Kermode or Spirit bear (pictured right), is found only here and is one of the rarest animals on earth. This is a sacred land where indigenous people have woven their lives, cultures and traditions seamlessly into the landscape for countless generations. the 2006 greAt BeAr r AinForest Agreements, which protect 6.7 million Acres oF this region, hAve Been herAlded As the worlds most comprehensive conservAtion Agreements - unifying the interests of First Nations, industry, provincial governments and environmental groups. Yet today, one half of the rich forests of this coastal region are at risk for logging. The construction of an 800-mile oil pipeline from Albertas Tar Sands to Kitimat, BC threatens to introduce super tankers to the delicate coastline of the Great Bear for the first time and to destroy the lives, cultures, and communities of this critically important, world-renowned ecosystem. If this project moves forward, it is not a question of if there will be an oil spill but when and how big. ForestEthics and our partners continue to fight to protect this region. We are proud to invite you into this breathtaking place to fully understand what is at stake.

With the Hakai Institute as our base, we will explore the magnificent coastal rainforest by land, sea, and air. Our itinerary will include a boat tour of the wind-swept outer-coast, whale watching, a guided ecology forest hike through the moss-covered cedar forest and beaches, and a special trip by float plane and boat in search of the elusive white Spirit Bear. Our adventures will be led by local guides from the many communities of the region, including Larry Jorgenson of the Heiltsuk First Nation.

AccommodAtions

The Hakai Institute occupies an isolated 214-acre site on the exposed Pacific edge of the worlds largest temperate rainforest. Our accommodations are surrounded by the Hakai Luxvbalis Conservancy, which at 475 square miles is the largest marine conservancy on the BC coast. While normally meant for researchers, students, and school groups, the Hakai Institute has generously opened their exceptional facility as a home base for our group. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy remarkable surroundings, the quiet solitude of the Institute, and fresh, delicious food prepared by Hakais chefs.
