iant WalMart plans to open two WalMart


Neighborhood Markets and three WalMart
Supercenters in Orange County soon. The
"neighborhood" 30,000+ square foot consumer
concept products will serve shoppers looking for
affordable, one-stop grocery shopping. The WalMart
stores will open in spaces where big-box retailers have
left voids in Huntington Beach, former Rite Aid at
Beach and Atlanta and former Home Expo on Edinger
next to Smart & Final. Rancho Santa Margarita, Irvine
and La Habra will get new stores as well.
The food-centered stores are intended to compete
with traditional and upscale supermarkets. If all stores
open over the next 12 months,
WalMart- will have 16 locations in Orange County.
WalMart Neighborhood Markets are part of
a new concept for the mega-retailer they are
developing across the country to enlarge the chain's
market share in grocery related sales. As of this story,
WalMart has opened 167 stores offering consumers a
full line of groceries in a retail layout that is
comparable to the size of traditional supermarkets like
Vons, Ralphs or Sprouts.
In Bijan Sasounian's beautifully remolded Center at
Beach and Atlanta, the 31,000-square-foot new Wal-
Mart store is taking over a former Rite Aid and will
feature fresh produce, frozen foods, meat and dairy.
Organic foods will also be available. Mama's on 39,
anchoring the Phase 1 of the Center's new look, joins
a consumer-friendly list of regulars and new comers
to the center that includes the list of retailers below.
With a projected opening inventory of almost
30,000 different items, WalMart's plan to diversify
and add more basic groceries for consumers will come
to fruitions. The first food-focused store opened in
1998. A typical store is about 42,000 square feet
about four times larger than a Fresh & Easy
Neighborhood Market but similar in size to a
traditional supermarket.
Items in the new smaller stores to include
perishables health and beauty products, stationery,
paper goods, bakery foods, canned goods, condiments
and spices, pet supplies and household merchandise.
A Pharmacy component will be an important part of
their formula for success. The store will offers quick
and convenient shopping to customers looking for
Walmarts Every Day Low Prices.

are about to repeat
a rumor or spread gossip.
In ancient Greece (469 -
399 BC), Socrates was
widely lauded for his
wisdom. One day an
acquaintance ran up
to him excitedly and
said, "Socrates, do
you know what I
just heard about
Diogenes?"
"Wait a moment,"
Socrates replied, "Before you tell me I'd like you
to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."
"Triple filter?" asked the acquaintance.
"That's right," Socrates continued, "Before you talk
to me about Diogenes let's take a moment to filter
what you're going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have
you made absolutely sure that what you are about to
tell me is true?"
"No," the man said, "Actually I just heard about it."
"All right," said Socrates, "So you don't really know
if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the
filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me
about Diogenes something good?"
"No, on the contrary..."
"So," Socrates continued, "You want to tell me
something about Diogenes that may be bad, even
though you're not certain it's true?"
The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates
continued, "You may still pass the test though,
because there is a third filter, the filter of Usefulness.
Is what you want to tell me about Diogenes going to
be useful to me?"
"No, not really."
"Well," concluded Socrates, "If what you want to
tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why
tell it to me or anyone at all?"
The man was bewildered and ashamed. This is an
example of why Socrates was a great philosopher and
held in such high esteem.
It also explains why Socrates never found out that
Diogenes was having an affair with his wife.
By the way this is a story about my two friends,
Socrates Schawartz and Diogenes Gallo.

he 12th Annual Huntington
Beachcruiser Meet recently drew
thousands of excited spectators
and 450 Classic Cars on Main Street as
well as Pier Plaza. Car buffs loved
inspecting the spectacular vehicles, in-
side and out, including cool VWs,
sedans, woodies and travel trailers.
"Seeing all those woodies on Pier Plaza
and Main Street left no doubt in any-
one's mind that they were in Surf City
USA," said City of
HB's Special
Events Coordinator
Chris Cole. "We're
so proud of be able
to host the annual
Beachcruiser event."

s I walked on the Huntington
Beach Pier recently, I noticed
that Hollywood had returned as
big Television Production Trucks,
Cameras, Lights, and a beach full of
stars and extras waited for the director's
call to join in a CSI-type pilot production,
called, "Graceland." It was definitely
magic at the beach, seeing scenes like a
woman being confronted
by a man with a gun. She
wrestled the weapon
out of his hands,
whipped out her own
"heat" and took control
of the situation. This
took place below the
Kite Connection. Scenes
were also shot below the
Surf City Store and
beneath the pier.
On the pier, alongside
a generator truck and
editing equipment, curious Spring
Breakers gawked at the action below.
The 20th Century Fox Television
production brought much needed
revenue to the city. During breaks,
some of the actors and crew even went
to the Surf City Store seeking necklaces
and souvenirs. The pilot previously
filmed in Malibu and was headed for
Leo Carillo State Beach after HB. If

Commission, a combined effort of the
HB Marketing and Visitors Bureau and

believe easy access to hand guns is not good for this country and
those who believe government has no business dictating
ownership one
way or the other.
I have gained
valuable under-
standing from both
arguments. I have made my final
decision. Certain Americans, especially
those who are more likely to become
victims of crime, need to own and become proficient
with handguns!
I can't discuss it any further right now. It's my turn to
pick up the empty shell cases.

What do you get when you
combine five men, five charities
and a ridiculously fun evening of
old-school type fundraising? The
hilarious Mr. Huntington Beach
Contest, which took place recently
at Old World.
In this parody of beauty pageants,
the contestants competed in swim
wear, talent, evening wear and
on-stage question segments to win
the totally satirical title of Mr.
Huntington Beach and win money
for their charities. But, unlike ,most
other contests of this type, every
organization that the contestants
represented were winners!
Prior to the actual contest,
contestants and their supporting
organizations sold votes for their
contestants. These dollar votes are
then converted to points (1 point for
every $100 sold), and added to the
contestants final judges scores.
The organizations keep every dime
of this money. Additionally, Mr. HB
wins $1,000, and the 1st and 2nd
Runne r s Up wi n $500 a nd
$250, respectively.
The Mr. Huntington Beach
Contest was first staged over 20
years ago as a fundraiser for the
Miss Huntington Beach Contest,
then being run by Cindy Cross.
Since it was a fundraiser for a spe-
cific program, all the money earned
in vote sales and from tickets went
to production costs or Miss
HB scholarships, said Cross.
When I decided to bring it back,
I wanted to be able to benefit all the
participating organizations, so I
tweaked it a bit and now everyone
is a winner, whether or not they
win, place or show!
Also benefiting this year is
the Huntington Beach 3/1 Marines
Foundation who is the sponsoring
non-profit. Until Mr. HB becomes
its own 501c3, there will always
be a sponsoring non-profit, so that
any monies collected vote sales
or ticket purchases are donations
benefiting a charity, Cross explained.
This years contestants and their
organizations were: Tim Ryan for
Soroptimist International Hunting-
ton Beach; Stuart Thomas for
Project Self-Sufficiency Founda-
tion; Don Hansen for Rotary; Lloyd
Papa Duck Skaggs
for the HB Duck-A-
Thon; and Pierre Tran
for A Leg Up Pet
Rescue/Waggin Trails
Transport.
Doors opened at 5:30
p.m. with the usual
outstanding buffet
dinner provided by

Footnote: We think it is unfortunate
(and wrong) not to make available
to the public the amounts of money
raised by each contestant. The
entire event is predicated on who
raises the most money. But, in the
absence of the Pageant promoters
not willingly disclosing the amounts
raised by each contestant...but
simply announcing the winner
(without disclosing the money
raised) leaves a void that needs to
be filled...transparency being the
point missing. It's a shame because
for the $35 price of admission... you
would be hard pressed to find an
equally entertaining venue to attend.

inni Gordon, 72 years young from Huntington
Beach, California, was crowned Ms. Senior
Orange County 2012 at the second preliminary
pageant held Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Norman
P. Murray Community Center in Mission Viejo,
California. Along with first runner up Suzanne
Millhollen from Rancho Santa Margarita, Gordon
will now advance to the State Pageant to compete for
the title of Ms. Senior
California in August.

in the area of effective
parenting. She performs

currently performing
in We Did It For You!
Women' s Journey
through History; the
story of how women received their rights in America,
told by the women who were there. Gordon plays the
part of Eleanor Roosevelt, Billie Jean King and Mary
Kay Ash. For her talent portion of the pageant,
Gordon performed a Polynesian hula from the 1939
era to the song, Keep Your Eyes on the Hands. She
dances with the group Ladies of Hula and theyve
performed at weddings, the Orange County Fair and
other venues. She has four children and five
grandchildren and has lived in Huntington Beach
since 1988. This was Gordons first time ever to
compete in a pageant.
Throughout the three-hour competition, the
contestants competed in four categories including:
Personal Interview, Evening Gown, Philosophy of
Life and Talent. Her walk across the stage to accept
the crown marked her first steps on a journey that will
take her from spotlight to spotlight representing
the American woman 60 years of age and up
who have reached the
age of elegance.
Second runner-up was
Jo Kelly from Newport
Beach, third runner-up
was Marcia Herrera
from Buena Park, and
fourth runner-up was
Madeline Hall from
Fountain Valley. Hall
also took home the
trophy for Best Talent
of the pageant. The 20
contestants whocompeted
in the pageant came
from various parts of Southern California. Under the
direction of Orange County Pageant Director, Pam
Wheeler, The Ms. Senior Orange County Pageant
partnered with the City of Mission Viejo.
The Ms. Senior America Pageant is the world's first
pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who
have reached the Age of Elegance. It is a search for
the lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity
and inner beauty of all senior Americans.
The Ms. Senior America philosophy is based upon
the belief that seniors are the foundation of America,
and its most valuable treasure. It is upon their
knowledge, experience and resources that the younger
generation has the opportunity to build a better society.
Dr. Al Mott, in the state of New Jersey in 1972,
started the Senior America Pageant Program. In 1986,
the California Chapter was created under the leader-
ship of Ms. Elda Barry of Long Beach. She led the
chapter until her retirement in 1999. In 2000, Marilyn
McCabe Kohler accepted the position of Director of
Ms. Senior California. Since that time, the program
has grown from one pageant to seven Preliminary
Pageants and one Annual State Pageant. In 2001, the
formation of the entertainment troupe - "The Silver
Girls" proved an instant success, as the troupe now
entertains at over 50 events each year.
Ms. Senior California of America,
Inc. was established as a non-profit
corporation in 2010 and is affiliated
with Ms. Senior America, Inc.,
founded in 1971. The Ms. Senior
California Pageant is celebrating

Dear people of Huntington Beach,
If you were a resident of this wonderful city
during the 90s, you may have known a man by the
name of Flint Morrison. He was a local HBTV-3
personality, emcee of Miss Huntington Beach
Pageant, and active with the Bolsa Chica Wetlands
alongside his lovely wife, Adrianne Morrison. He
was also my grandfather. Surrounded by his
family, he passed away recently in Arizona. The
news slowly reached friends in Huntington Beach
and my family was truly overwhelmed by how many
people still remember him. Many have your own memories about
my grandpa Flint-each of them colorful and unique. I would like to walk
you through my memories.
Now, thats enough, grandpa would say in his deep voice while I was
being mischievous. Sometimes there weren't any words at allsometimes
the only queue I heard was the crinkle of his newspaper being lowered
just enough so I could see his eyes peering down at me. His relationship
with the newspaper was not one to meddle with. I would watch him have
full conversations with the paper, and the television during USC football
games, even traffic lights that were taking too long to turn green. I
watched my grandpa do a lot of things, simply because I went wherever
he went. Our shadows resembled a mouse trying to keep up with a giraffe;
he was a rather tall gentleman.
My grandpa made his love known throughout the community with his
resounding voice. You may know him as the news anchor for the old city
TV channel, HBTV-3. I enjoyed tagging along with him when he went to
rehearsals and sometimes I got to be his co-anchor. One might expect
these adventures to be a bit exhausting for a little girl, so of course
grandpa would accompany me on regular lunch dates- usually to local
places that knew us well like Peros, Sunnys, or the Harbor House Caf.
The waiters and waitresses always exchanged jokes with him and gave
us nothing but the best service- after all, he was Mr. Huntington Beach.
I was proud to be his shadow and follow him everywhere. Now it is
his turn to be my shadow. My grandpas personality has successfully
rubbed off on me and follows me everywhere. My memories of him help
me remember an important lesson: Our bodies are not permanent- they
are on loan. It is our duty to take good care of our bodies so our souls can
plant good seeds in others; the world around us delights in reaping the
gifts our souls have to give. These gifts will continue on after our bodies
are through and our souls return home, just like my Grandpa. Most
importantly, don't forget to have fun and be proud of the people who
have earned a place in your heart.

A
s our readers know, Huntington Beach has had one of its own
residents representing the City in the State Assembly for a long,
long time. Going back to Doris Allen, Scott Baugh, and Tom
Harman, Jim Silva now is nearing the end of his six years in office. And
with redistricting and the resulting alignment of candidates running for
election in the 72nd and 74th District, there is a good chance that the days
of someone from HB serving in the Assembly may be running out.
Some background: the Citizens Redistricting Commissions sharp pencil
decided it best to split Huntington Beach into two parts, the more southern
part of the City now sitting in the 74th District and the more northern
part in the 72nd.
We will certainly be without one of our own in the 74th District, as it
appears to be coming down to a fight between incumbent Assemblyman
(and former Costa Mesa Mayor) Allan Mansoor, and Newport Beach
Councilwoman Leslie Daigle. Huntington Beach may become the
battleground for these two, but it certainly isnt their hometown.
The 72nd is a different story. For months, Huntington Beach City
Councilman Matthew Harper has been running for this seat. But he recently
decided to withdraw from the race. While several hopefuls remain in the
race, only one is from Huntington Beach; small business owner Travis Allen.
Travis Allen told us he intends to do everything in his power to convince
the voters in the 72nd assembly District that he will go to Sacramento to
shake things up and get things done, not just go to the Capitol to go along
to get along. He went on to say, "Sacramento needs new ideas. Career politi-
cians have taken the state in the wrong direction of excessive taxes,
overspending and unnecessary regulation. We need a fresh perspective that
is focused on bringing companies and jobs back to California.
Travis' resume describes him as a successful financial planner with a
private sector career path focused on building and protecting the savings
of hardworking men and women. Allen went on to say, "My clients want
to protect and grow their savings while living within a realistic budget. My
goal is to bring that same mindset to Sacramento."
There has been a long tradition of extraordinary representation in this
community. Congressman Rohrabacher has represented the area with
dignity and passion; Assemblyman Silva and his wealth of knowledge and
political savvy has built a reputation on taking each voter in the district
seriously, and the members of the various councils that make up the 72nd
Assembly District have all contributed to the sense of pride and level of
success this community embodies. Travis Allen says he hopes to add his
name to that dignified list.
Other candidates in the race include Troy Edgar. Mr. Edgar has run for
office several times since first being elected to
the City Council in Los Alamitos in 2006.
Earlier this year, he was a candidate for
House of Representatives but dropped out of
that race to run for the State Assembly. Also
running is Long Pham, a member of the
Orange County Board of Education and
Westminster resident. The remaining
candidates are Joe Dovinh and Albert Ayala
both Democrats, both from Garden Grove.
The 72nd A.D. includes the following cities:
Westminster, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Los
Alamitos, Seal Beach, a portion of Huntington
Beach, a portion of Santa Ana,
and the unincorporated
county island of Midway
City. The Primary is
June 5, 2012. Please mark

n case you
missed it, a
guy named
Bubba won
this years Mas-
ters. Surely the irony wasnt lost on those who
have railed against the Augusta National Golf
Club, which hosts the prestigious tournament, for
refusing to admit female members.
This year was supposed
to be different. If tradition
was to be honored,
Augusta National would
admit a woman for the
first time in its 78-year
existence. The CEOs of
the Masters corporate
sponsors are traditionally
invited to become members
of the club. IBM is one of
three primary sponsors of
the tournament and the
recently elected president of
the technology giant just
happens to be a woman.
Virginia (Ginny) Rometty
is the first female president of
IBM and many wondered if
she would also be the first of her sex to break
down the doors of membership at fabled Augusta
National. But the Masters has come and gone and
although Rometty was in attendance during the
tournament entertaining her companys clients,
she was not seen wearing the green jacket which
is symbolic of club membership.
There are at least two dozen all-male golf clubs
in the U.S., but the only one you ever hear about
is Augusta National, and thats because it hosts
the Masters. The tournament provides guaranteed
exposure for opponents of
its membership policy,
while the other all-male
clubs get a free pass. It
should be noted that there
are also women-only golf
clubs, one in Canada
and more overseas. The
Ladies Golf Union
in Great Britain has
approximately 3,000
women-only clubs as
members and the
Scottish Ladies Golfing
Association Limited
represents 442 more.
Why dont those who
object to Augusta
Nationals men-only
policy also protest
against reverse discrimination?
Heres my take. Those who dwell on the
gender-exclusivity of private golf clubs have too
much time on their hands. If men want to
associate with other men, and women want to
associate with other women, in a golf club locker
room women are allowed to play the Augusta
course - have at it. Its neither against the law in
Georgia nor is it anyones business.
If do-gooders want a legitimate cause to sink
their teeth into, they should campaign for equal
rights of women under Title IX. The landmark
federal statute is celebrating its 40th anniversary
this year and while it has done much to provide
increased athletic opportunities for women in our
nations schools, there are egregious examples of
discrimination against women in high schools
and colleges throughout the country. In fact, it
wouldnt be difficult to find Title IX violations at
virtually every educational institution in the land.
To paraphrase the late Groucho Marx, why
any man or woman would want to be a
member of a club that didnt want them as a
member is beyond me.
B
.O.B. Trailers Inc., of Boise, Idaho, has recalled their
B.O.B. single and double strollers. This
includes about 411,700 in the
United States and 27,000 in Canada
(357,000 units were recalled in February 2011
due to stran gulation hazard posed by canopy
drawstring). The stroller canopy's embroidered
logo's backing patch can detach, posing a
choking hazard to babies and young children.
The company has received six reports of children mouthing
the detached patch. Gagging and choking were reported in two
incidents. In each of the reported incidents, the children were
seated in an infant car seat attached to the stroller.
This recall involves all B.O.B. strollers manufactured
between November 1998 and November 2010.
Strollers manufactured after October 2006 have a
white label affixed to the back of the stroller's leg
with the manufac turing date. Strollers with no
manu facturing date listed were produced prior to
October 2006 and are
included in this recall. The
strollers were sold in
single seat and double-seat
model s. The BOB,

Strides brand name is
embroidered on the
canopy of the strollers.
The strollers were sold at REI, Babies R' Us and other
children's product and sporting goods stores nationwide
and Amazon.com between November 1998 and October
2011 for between $280 and $600. Consumers should
immediately stop using the recalled strollers until
they remove the embroi dery backing patch
from the interior of the canopy's logo.

he City of Huntington Beach
Ten Point Plan for Local
Business has been honored by
the Orange County Business Council
(OCBC) as the recipient of the
inaugural "Turning Red Tape into
Red Carpet" award in the category of
Business Retention and Expansion.
The award was presented at an
OCBC celebratory reception on
November 17 and OCBC President
Lucy Dunn will formally present
the award to the City Council at
their meeting on Monday, November
21 at 6:00 PM.
The award recognizes the
city for proactively cutting
through the red tape and
opening the door for business by
creating and implementing - the
Ten Point Plan. The Plan was created
by Huntington Beach as a vehicle to
cement the citys commitment to
supporting and influencing local
business retention and attraction,
with a goal of producing more new
jobs, expanding the local tax base,
and increasing the satisfaction of the
business community in receiving the
important services they need to
remain successful. Huntington Beach
applied for the honor and the
program was selected from among
many other outstanding programs
throughout the County.

e live in a desert,
a place where
there is less than
10 inches of rainfall, annually.
Less than 6 inches has
been recorded for
Orange County
this rainy season.
The California
Department of
Water Resources
recently reported
below average
rainfall for all of California. A ninety year
history shows that we have a wet year for every
four dry years.
The Orange County Water District (OCWD),
i n addi t i on t o

water to 2.4 million
people, provides
information about the
wise and careful use
of this precious
resource. Last month
I observed and partic-
ipated in one of these
programs, the 16th
Childrens Education
Water Festival. It was
held at the Richard
Nixon Presidential
Library and Museum
in Yorba Linda, and
was a attended by
6,000 elementary
school children and
about 600 volunteers.
Among the many spon-
sors were: Disneyland,
The Orange County Water District, Rubios and
Wells Fargo. Childrens activities were provided by:
Bolsa Chica Conservancy, Orange County Coast-
keepers, and Southern California Edison to name a
few. Children came from Carden Academy, Grace
Lutheran School, and Clegg Elementary School
along with sixty four other schools.
I attended a presentation by Dr. Kevin Hand
to learn of his work that seeks to find evidence of
life beyond Earth. Dr. Hand is on the research
team for James Camerons historic dive to the
bottom of the ocean.
I watched children make their own aquifer models
that they could take home. I talked to volunteers and
was impressed with their knowledge of water
resources and conservation.
There was no fee for this annual event that is
limited to 6,000 children. I left the Festival with a
great sense of appreciation to all the sponsoring
agencies, to the many enthusiastic volunteers
and to the inquisitive and excited children. It
was a good day.
Now, onto the next educational program the 5th
Annual Orange County Summit will be held on
Friday May18th in
Anaheim. Business
and community lead-
ers, elected officials,
environmentalists,
teachers, students,
and scientists will
discuss solutions to
fixing and expanding
the States water

related to getting
people back to
work and boosting

he Seal Beach Lions Club recently held
their 11th Annual Saint Patrick's Day
Designated Driver Program, which
assisted 180 people get home safely. Their club
partnered with Straub Distributing/Budweiser to
drive home people who had too much to drink at
local bars. More than 50 volunteers manned the
booth, where celebrators could ask for a ride
home. Literature at the booth said the Seal Beach
Police would not tow "your car if you leave it
here." The Lions did this as a community service,
although they did accept donations. Lions
President Mike Haley said he's proud to serve the
community and see that everybody gets home
safely. If you would like to get involved in the
enthusiastic club, that also has received national
attention for eliminating graffiti, you can log on

You can also find them at the April Seal Beach
Car Show in Eisenhower Park doing their famous
Lions Pancake Breakfast and Barbecue. The
Lions Club is a 501c3 non profit organization that
has been around since 1939 in That Area.

U
ntil five years ago, I assumed
that wine fanatics were
crazy. Sure, I enjoyed wine.
But it was simply a drink a
beverage to enjoy with dinner from
time to time.
And then I put my nose in a glass
of Syrah from Failla, a boutique
winery in Napa Valley, and something
clicked. How could such a simple
beverage fermented grape juice
have such a seductive bouquet? And
how could it taste so good?
I knew nothing of tasting notes at the
time, but when I learned that a
well-known wine critic had described
the wine as "explosive and wild" and
complimented its "aromas of raspberry,
game, truffle, smoke and leather, with
notes of pepper and beefsteak tomato,"
it all made sense.
So I dove into the world of wine
taking classes, reading books, and
tasting as much as I could.
These days, I'm frequently asked
how one should learn about wine.
While every approach is helpful,
tasting is the most valuable. Even
simple questions, like your go-to
varietal on an average weeknight, are
impossible to answer until you've
tasted several different wines.
If you prefer white wine, for example,
do you seek out ones that are crisp and
light, like New Zealand Sauvignon
Blanc? Or do you prefer wines that are
buttery and ripe, like California
Chardonnay? If you prefer red, do you
seek out big, jammy wines, like Aus-
tralian Shiraz? Or the more restrained
profile of French Pinot Noir?
Once wine becomes a passion, those
hard-to-pronounce regions in Europe
become much easier to remember
so long as you've tasted the wines.
Those flaws that sommeliers can spot
become obvious to you, as well so
long as you've tasted enough wine to
encounter them.
Tasting can be as simple as heading
to your local
wine shop when
several bottles
are open. Get-
ting together
with friends and
asking each
person to bring
something dif-
ferent is another
way to taste
several wines in
one sitting.
My favorite
tasting for those who are just
getting into wine is a bit more formal.
I select four varietals generally
Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot
Noir, and Syrah and open two
bottles of each, one from the New
World and the Old World.
The stereotype tells us that New
World wines are fruitier than their
Old World counterparts. While one
can find wines that debunk
this stereotype, it's based
in truth. So I purposefully
seek out wines that fit the
stereotype. And I serve every-
thing blind, pouring the wines
from paper bags to mask
where they're from.
Recognizing the differences
should be obvious, even to novices.
The aromatics of New Zealand
Sauvignon Blanc are extremely intense,
typically offering fresh-cut grass,
gooseberri es,
and grapefruit.
French Sauvi-
gnon Blanc,
especially from
Sancerre and
Pouilly Fum,
presents more
subtle aromatics,
like chalk and
white flowers.
Chardonnay
provides a similar
contrast. While
California Chardonnays are character-
ized by tropical fruits and butter,
French Chardonnays are marked by
tart fruits, like green apples and lime.
When Pinot Noir comes from
warmer regions of California, like
Napa Valley and Carneros, it presents
aromatics of sweet fruits, like black
cherries. In the French region of
Burgundy, Pinot Noir generally offers
aromas of tart cherries
and earth.

produce fruit bombs
think gobs of ripe
blackberries and licorice.
French Syrah is more restrained,
typically marked by blueberries,
meat, and pepper.
Neither Old World nor New World
is "better" my preference shifts all
the time, depending on my mood
but looking for these differences is
extremely educational. And when the
paper bag comes off each bottle, it's
fun to see whether or not you correctly
guessed the origin of each wine.
This is just one concept for a formal
tasting. One can just as easily host a
"wine on a budget" tasting, selecting
several bottles under $10, or a
"horizontal" tasting focusing on
one varietal, from one region, from
one year, selecting wines from a
several producers.
Just remember to keep it fun.

Dear EarthTalk:
I understand
that there are a
number of bills before
Congress right now that seek to turn over public
lands to destructive commercial and recreational
activity. What can be done to stop this assault on
the land that belongs to all the people?

Yes, more than a dozen bills are under
consideration in Congress right now that seek
to open up more of our public lands to
development and resource extraction.
Ranging from drilling in the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge to mining in the Grand
Canyon to reversing the 2001 Roadless
rule, they amount to what the Wilder-
ness Society is calling an unprecedented
siege on Americas wild places.
Probably the most offensive bill is
the Wilderness and Roadless Area
Release Act, proposed by
California Republican Kevin
McCarthy in the House (H.R.
1581) and Wyoming Republican
John Barrasso in the Senate (S.
1087). It calls for releasing tens
of millions of acres across the
American West and beyond
from development restrictions
instituted by the Clinton administrations 2001
Roadless Area Conservation initiative (the
Roadless rule) that set aside almost 60 million
acres of public land as untouchable.
The bill aims to release areas deemed not
suitable for wilderness designationsincluding
some Wilderness Study Areas on Bureau
of Land Management (BLM) property and
many still inaccessible areas within National
Forestsfrom restrictions set forth under the
Roadless rule. It directs these areas to be
managed instead according to principles set
forth under a 1960s Multiple Use/Sustained
Yield Act that allows for development and
resource extraction on lands that dont have
significant conservation or scenic value.
The Wilderness Society is fighting hard
against the new legislation, which it calls
The Great Outdoors Giveaway.
The group claims the bill
would undermine decades of
land protection work supported
by the vast majority of Americans. It
gives polluters and developers,
who already have access to
76 percent of all national
forests and BLM lands,
access to even more of
Americas vanishing
wilderness, reports the
group. This bill is a
blank check for polluters
to ruin the air we breathe
and water we drink.
Some similar bills now
before Congress include the
Border Patrol Takeover Act, which aims to end
clean air and water protections in natural or
wilderness areas on or near U.S. borders; the
Motorize Our Wilderness Areas Act, which
would allow motorbikes, snowmobiles and ATVs
into millions of wild acres now protected against
the noise and emissions from such vehicles; and
the End the National Monuments Act, a call to
strip the President of his authority to designate
new national monuments by executive order.
Conservationists arent the only ones opposed
to opening up more public lands to the axe and
drill. The 2012 Conservation in the West Poll
conducted by researchers at Colorado College
found that upwards of 85 percent of voters in
Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah
and Wyoming support conservation and oppose
more development on their public lands. No
matter their political leanings, most voters polled
believe that conservation helps create and protect
jobs in their states and that private companies
shouldnt be allowed to develop public lands if
public enjoyment or access is compromised.

COWS THE CONSTITUTION THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq
... why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of
really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we're
not using it anymore.
The City of Huntington Beach is in the
process of reviewing a comprehensive
Master Facilities Plan of capital needs
and acquisitions based upon the
growth anticipated under the General
Plan and Development Impact Fees
necessary to accommodate those
needs. The review, conducted by
Revenue & Cost Specialists, LLC
proposes modifications to the methodology
of existing Traffic, Storm Drainage, Library
Development and Park Land/Open Space
Acquisition Impact Fees as well as establishing three new Development
Impact Fees (Law Enforcement Facilities, Fire Suppression Facilities, and
Public Meeting Facilities). Below are the proposed fees

proposal to ban the sale of puppies in pet
stores received popular attention at a Hunt-
ington Beach City Council Meeting on March 19.
The proposal put forth by Council Member Joe Car-
chio emphasized the need to end the sale of puppies
since most originate from inhumane puppy mills.
Along with Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and Irvine,
Huntington Beach officials have approved the new
ban. With the votes 6 to 1, the motion to begin draft-
ing an official ordinance has begun. The ordinance
banning sales will be voted on at another meeting.
Puppy farming is a cruel and inhumane practice
of breeding large amounts of puppies while keeping
them locked together in stack, metal cages. Without
adequate living areas, puppies from farms have
problems with the pads of their feet, illness, and
psychological damage. Documentation of puppies
living in these deplorable conditions is what
prompted Council Member
Carchio to propose a solution
to the problem.
This is no different than the
abuse of children. Animals
dont have anyone to speak for
them, Carchio said in support
of his proposal. With applause
from the audience, Council
Member Joe Shaw also spoke
in favor of the new ban.
Mayor of Huntington Beach
Dan Hansen and Mayor Pro
Tem Devin Dwyer dissented
Carchio. Dwyer wanted to tell
the business owers of the two
pet stores in Huntington Beach
of the proposal, emphasizing
that they too need notification
of the proposal. Although
some council members ques-
tioned Carchios goal, the ban
passed.
Ending the sale of puppies
will not only kill business for puppy mills, it will
drive more people to adopt. The amount of animals
euthanized from 2012-2011 in Huntington Beach
was a staggering 15,265. Rather than letting these
healthy, loving animals die, the community has cho-
sen to start saving them.
Members from different animal organizations
were present to speak their share about the ban, and
all were in favor. From the Humane Society, the No
Kill Animal Rescue, and Best Friends Animal Soci-
ety, all had many dedicated animal lovers show up
to make sure the ban passed.
Elizabeth Oreck from Best Friends Animal Society
said, Puppy farms cut corners to keep expenses low
and profit high. It makes no sense to continue man-
ufacturing pets when there are animals in rescue or-
ganizations to adopt.
The passing of the ban of puppy sales in Hunting-
ton Beach reinforces its reputation for being a pet-
friendly city. With the award-winning Dog Beach
and dog parks, this O.C. city is joining others to fight
against cruelty to animals. Not only will it benefit
abused puppies, it will also aid hundreds of aban-
doned animals in shelters across Huntington Beach."

The Huntington Beach Police
Department online citizen police
report system allows a person to
submit a report for certain minor
crimes. It also allows that person
to print a copy of the police report
for free. This provides a great
convenience for most since it can
be done rather quickly with no
time delays. However, not all
reports can be filed online. The
police department website gives
detailed information on what the
requirements are for filing a
report online.
In 2011 citizens used the online
crime reporting system over 900
times to file minor reports for
offenses such as lost property,
petty theft, harassing telephone
calls and vandalism. For more

The FHA has made it
increasingly expensive to get into
an FHA loan, raising its fees four
times over the last three years.
Now, finally, the FHA is giving a
break to those who currently have
FHAfinancing.
Once only 1% of all loans produced
in America, the FHAhas increased
in market share over the last
decade, at times accounting for up
to 30% of all new loans. The
reasons for its growth in popularity
are simple: more relaxed
guidelines. While all other programs
were tightening the belt and getting
stricter in their underwriting
policies, the FHA held its course
with lending criteria that seemed
more lenient by comparison. As
property values continued to fall
year over year, the FHAs higher
loan-to-value restrictions made it
an obvious choice for homeowners
looking to refinance before their
remaining equity vanished. The
FHA has also been very popular
with homebuyers looking to buy a
home with only 3.5% down.
But the FHAdidnt want the high
risk associated with carrying such a
heavy market share. So in 2009
they started raising their costs to
make their programs less competitive,
and thereby less desirable. FHA
loans carry a monthly mortgage
insurance. Prior to 2009, this
monthly mortgage insurance was
only 0.55% of the loan amount for
30 year mortgages. On June 11,
2012, the FHA will implement its
fourth increase in three years,
bringing the monthly MI between
1.20% and 1.5% of the loan
amount for those seeking to get
into an FHAloan.
But for those who obtained
their FHA loans prior to
June 1, 2009, relief is
coming. After June 11,
2012, these individuals
will be able to refinance
through the FHAs
S t r e a m l i n e
process and retain
their original
mortgage insur-
ance factor of
0.55%. The FHAestimates that the
average qualified borrower will
save approximately $3,000 per
year, or $250 per month as a result
of this change. Here in California
where average loan amounts are
larger than the national average, the
savings are sure to be even greater.
Undoubtedly, this will be welcome
news for the FHA insured borrow-
ers who qualify for this
program. Many of them
have tried to refinance
before totake advantage
of the low interest rate
environment weve
seen over the last few
years. Unfortunately,
many of these home-
owners found that
even though they
could obtain a lower
rate, the increase in
the monthly mortgage
insurance negated any
real benefit
they would
have seen as a
result of the rate
drop. Very soon,
these homeowners
will finally be able to
have what every
homeowner desires
a lower rate on
their mortgage.
