HALTER RANCH VINEYARD

A
n ancient coast live oak – one of the
largest specimens in the world –
stands sentinel on a hilltop over-
looking the Halter Ranch Vineyard, its
gnarled limbs sprawling forth from the
massive trunk.
Standing beneath its canopy, you can just
imagine inhabitants from the past seeking
shelter form the Paso Robles heat hundreds of
years earlier in the very same spot.
The tree evokes a sense of place, an
authenticity, that emanates throughout Halter
Ranch, from the historic farmhouse greeting
visitors, to the rustic barns and silo. That
same sense of place guides the sustainable
farming practices and winemaking at Halter
Ranch Vineyard, said Leslie Wyss, the
winery’s manager.
“The tree is a symbol,” she said.
Even the renovations of the beautiful
Victorian farmhouse and other structures –
including the quaint tasting room which sits
just behind the home – were completed with

an eye toward retaining as authentic a feel as
possible.

said Wyss, with winemaker Bill Sheffer
seeking a pure expression of the vineyard’s
various blocks. Soils on the steep vineyard
hillsides range from calcareous clay to clay
loam with shale deposits dictate the varietals
planted – and there are no fewer than 19 in
42 separate blocks.
The limestone-rich slopes reach an eleva-
tion of 1,800 feet and most of the vineyards
are south-facing, providing excellent drainage
and sun exposure.
About 50 acres of vines were planted
in the late 1990s, but most were planted
after Swiss entrepreneu Hansjörg Wyss
purchased 900 acres of the ranch on Paso
Robles’ west side that dates back to the 1880s.
Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are the center-
piece of the winery’s basic program, but that
hardly tells the whole story. With about 60
percent planted to Bordeaux varieties and 40
percent to Rhône varieties, with some
Zinfandel that’s used for blending, the array of
grapes provides Sheffer with an exciting
palette with which to craft Halter Ranch
blends.

Current releases include the 2004 Ranch Cab, a blend that includes
75 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and dollops of Petit Verdot, Cabernet
Franc and Syrah. Also, the 2006 Ranch White, a blend of Viognier,
Sauvignon Blanc, Roussanne and Marsanne, the 2005 Ranch Red,
made up primarily of Zinfandel and Syrah, and a 2004 Syrah that
employs Mourvedre, Grenache and Petit Verdot.
Sheffer previously worked as an assistant wine maker at J. Lohr and
Adelaida Cellars before becoming the top winemaker at Eberle Winery
in the eight years before coming to Halter Ranch. He’s also spent time
learning his craft at wineries around the globe, including in Chile,
New Zealand and Spain.
About two-thirds of the grapes grown at Halter Ranch continue to
be sold to other wineries, including Justin – which is about four miles
west on Adelaida Road – L’Aventure and Wild Horse.
The first vintage bottled under the Halter Ranch label was 2002
and production has reached about 5,000 cases annually. That number
will gradually expand. Plans for a new, state-of-the-art winery,
including caves carved into the hillside, are in the design stages, with
permits already secured.
The history of the ranch and the legacy of the coast live oak are the
inspiration for an estate red blend, called Ancestor, set for its initial
release in October. Destined to be the winery’s flagship, the Ancestor
Estate Reserve will showcase varietals from the vineyard’s best red
wine lots each vintage.
The first vintage of Ancestor will be 2003, featuring primarily Syrah
with some Cabernet Sauvignon.
Winegrower Mitch Wyss, Leslie’s husband, was hired to oversee the
vineyard from the beginning. Leslie and Mitch Wyss were already
friends with Hansjörg Wyss when he bought the ranch.
“There was a sense of loyalty and trust that we had already estab-
lished,” she said. Halter Ranch Vineyard “is very much run like a
family business.”
Prior to arriving at Halter Ranch, Mitch Wyss spent more than 20
years managing farming operations in the northern Sacramento Valley,
growing various produce such as kiwis, sugar plums and mandarins.
When offered the opportunity to grow grapes at Halter Ranch, he
jumped at the chance, said Leslie Wyss.
Growing wine grapes provides the satisfaction of taking your agri-
cultural product from start to finish, something that appealed to Wyss.
He’s also taken advantage of the opportunity to cultivate even further
his use of sustainable farming practices – something that falls perfectly
in line with the sensibilities of Hansjörg Wyss. A foundation bearing
his name has helped to preserve nearly five million acres of wilderness
in the U.S., and he serves on the boards of The Wilderness Society, the
Grand Canyon Trust and other environmentally oriented organiza-
tions.

Six Independent Artists Compete in Final Winery Music Awards
Saturday’s Winery Music Awards semi-
final concert winner, Holiday And The
Adventure Pop Collective, from San Diego,
became the sixth and last independent artist
to qualify for the competition’s finals, to be
held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, at River
Oaks Hot Springs & Spa in Paso Robles. The
five others who ranked among the highest
scores of the 20 semi-finalists in the 2007
summer-long Wine Country competition are:

Saturday’s concert was the fourth and last
semi-final concert of this year’s event and also

Bolduc, of Los Angeles and Vanessa Van Spall
from San Francisco. Artist performances were
judged by a panel of professionals in the
music, entertainment and wine industries in
the categories of originality, musicianship and
marketability to the prime wine-consuming
market.
Of the pool of twenty industry judges for
the 2007 competition, some notable names
include Jon Anderson, of the legendary rock
group, YES; Antonia Bennett, jazz singer and
daughter of the great Tony Bennett; and Jake
Hooker, composer one of rock’s greatest hits
of all time, “I Love Rock and Roll.”

created out of the growing popularity of
quality musical performances at many
wineries throughout California. Attendees
enjoy fine wine, gourmet food and quality
original music in a variety of genres
surrounded by rows of vineyards and stacks
of wine barrels. The Winery Music Awards
competition is a Paso Robles-based showcase
open to original music artists from the US and
Canada, independent and unsigned with
major record labels. Its four monthly semi-
final concert competitions began in June.
Twenty artists out of nearly 100 who entered
the competition qualified to compete in the
semi-final rounds.

Winemaker Profile: Midlife Crisis

I
n 2005, I went to the Paso Robles Wine
Festival as a journalist. While I was there,
I tasted through the obligatory samples
but one truly stood out. It was an up-and-
coming winery called Midlife Crisis and aside
from the catchy name, I was truly astounded
by the wines that Kevin and Jill Mittan were
producing. Their Syrah, a barrel sample at the
time, was truly delicious and as it aged, it
only got better.
“We learned to make wine as home wine-
makers – our “label” was Vanalden Estate,”
says Jill Mittan. Vanalden was the name of the
street on which they lived at the time. The
couple were a part of Cellarmasters in the San
Fernando Valley and worked closely with
John Daume. “We were so serious that we
installed a 10' x 10' garden shed in our garage
and bought our own “crusher/destemmer,”
press and even 10 gallon barrels.” The
Mittans spent as much time on their home-
made wines as they do on their commercial
wines.
Still, Midlife Crisis, a name that is as much
a description as a marketing tool, is not the
Mittans only work. The pair are still working

their “day” jobs in L.A. (both are in the televi-
sion industry) and coming up to Paso Robles
on weekends. The couple is preparing to go
“full-time” in the wine industry, but many
factors including dealing with the red-tape of
setting up an actual winery are involved.
John Daume’s influence on winemakers is
becoming far and wide. “John is the owner of
the Woodland Hills Beer, Wine and Cheese
making shop and the Daume Winery in
Camarillo,” says Mittan. “He let the Cellar-
masters have access to his winery at crush

and he also spent a lot of time sharing what
he knew and what he learned.” Between
Daume’s influence and a few classes at UC
Davis, the Mittans fashioned a winemaking
education that has served them well.
“The other inspiration and influence was
Art Norman,” Mittan commented. “I think
when we first learned how he had spent years
coming up on weekends and building his
vineyard and winery from the ground up,
that started the dream in us and made us
believe we could hang in there and make a
winery work. He also was just so helpful with
ideas as was Gary Eberle who spent lots of
time talking to us.”
The Mittans have created market-friendly
and drinkable wine that also is a brand. In
short, Midlife Crisis is not a crisis at all; it’s an
American dream for two dreamers who
believe in the hard work it takes to make
dreams a reality. Jill Mittan puts it more
simply, “Having people like your wine is a
really magical wonderful thing.”

Vintners’ Association to Celebrate the Joys of Harvest
Santa Barbara County vineyard
managers and winemakers have shifted
into “harvest mode” and are already
remarking on the quality of the 2007
vintage. Steve Clifton, owner/winemaker
of Palmina, picked Pinot Grigio from the
Alisos Vineyard on August 17th. “It tastes
fantastic,” he notes. “We’ve had a nice
even growing season, and the fruit has
responded with great balance and flavor
profiles. Couldn’t be happier.”
The wine grape harvest will ramp up into September
and October and with continued weather patterns, finish
in November with late ripening grapes such as Cabernet
Sauvignon and Syrah. Jim Fiolek, Executive Director of
the Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Association says that
“Excitement is in the air! Harvest is what our grower and
winery members work toward all year, ensuring that each
grape cluster is as perfect as possible. Harvest truly is the
fruits of their labor.”
Another tradition of harvest is the annual “Celebration
of Harvest” festival, sponsored by the Vintners’ Association. In addi-
tion to bringing wine lovers, vintners, growers, winemakers and chefs
together to extol the joys of harvest, the festival celebrates the diver-
sity of the unique Santa Barbara County wine region. The Celebration
of Harvest Festival will be held Saturday afternoon, October 13th from
1 to 4 p.m. on the stunning grounds of Rancho Sisquoc Winery
located in the Santa Maria Valley.
Festival goers will sample wines from the 100+ members of the
Vintners’ Association, complemented with Wine Country cuisine from
more than two dozen local caterers and restaurants.

I
n the 2004 movie “Sideways,” the
central character Miles poetically
describes his love for Pinot Noir. He
talks in great detail about its need for
constant care and attention, its fragile, deli-
cate nature, and its haunting and brilliant
flavors.
Pinot Noir sales exploded after the
release of that movie, but for Marc Gold-
berg and Maggie D’Ambrosia of Windward
Vineyard, Pinot Noir has been an all-
consuming passion for almost 20 years.
Since planting their 15-acre property in
the Templeton Gap area of Westside Paso
Robles in 1989, the former hospital admin-
istrators have been devoting their time and
resources to growing and making a “Great
American Pinot Noir,” one that rivals those
produced in the Burgundy region of
France.
The Windward style of Pinot Noir is a
lighter style than most American Pinots.
Marc, who loves to cook, believes that his

style is much more food-friendly than other
heavier Pinots. “Other wines can’t compare
to the wine and food combinations that
Burgundy does,” he explains.
The Windward Vineyard tasting room
reflects the couple’s single-minded focus on
the grape. You won’t find any t-shirts,
baseball caps, condiments or deli items
here. It’s a rustic and casual space with
high ceilings and a no-frills simplicity.
“Everyone loves the atmosphere of the
tasting room because it’s unpretentious and
all about the wine,” Marc explains. “And
not just any wine, one wine – Pinot Noir.”
Producing only about 2,000 cases a year,
Windward sells almost exclusively out of
their tasting room, so for the Pinotphiles
out there, it should be a must-stop destina-
tion along Highway 46 West.
Outside the tasting room and winery is a
vine-covered patio overlooking the vine-
yards. Marc and Maggie encourage guests
to bring their picnic baskets and enjoy
lunch in the shady, private setting. They are
happy to sell wine by the bottle for those

who want to just sit and admire the view.
“It’s got to be one of the prettiest views in
the entire area,” Marc says.
Visitors will find Marc and Maggie on
hand almost every day of the week, and Marc
loves to share his expertise in growing the
fickle grape, and making a “minimalist” style
wine. Winery tours are available by request,
and can include barrel tastings if planned in
advance. There is a $5 tasting fee, a $10 fee
includes a Riedel Burgundy wine glass.
When Marc first planted the vineyard 18
years ago, there were only two other wineries
in the area growing Pinot Noir. Today, there
are at least 17, and Marc says that’s good for
the varietal’s awareness and acceptance. And,
yes, that movie didn’t hurt either.

is better for our vineyards and for
our vineyard neighbors.”

What is Rhône-style wine?

A A wine described as Rhône-style imitates the great wines that come from the area of
southeastern France known as the Rhône Valley. Whereas a Bordeaux-style wine means a
wine that is blended with the traditional grape varietals of the Bordeaux region, that is,
primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, for example, the traditional
grapes of the Rhône region make up a Rhône wine. The Rhône Valley grapes are different
from Bordeaux grapes and therefore the wine styles are distinctly different, too.
Syrah, probably the most recognized Rhône grape, is growing in popularity among
American wine drinkers. Only about 10 years ago, Syrah was not in the top ten list of
grapes planted in California when ranked by acreage. Today, it is among the fastest
growing varietals, and has overtaken one of Bordeaux’s famous varietals, Merlot, in terms
of popularity among wine drinkers.
Syrah may someday be overproduced and suffer the same fate as Merlot, but it is not as
likely to happen because of its depth of character and potential for greatness. Syrah has
dense, dark fruit layers that can explode with flavors of plum, blackberry, exotic spice and
cocoa. It has the tannic backbone to complement its bold fruit but is not normally as
tannic as Cabernet. I enjoy it as an alternative to Bordeaux’s other great grape, Cabernet
Sauvignon, when I’m eating game or beef prepared with a rich sauce or gravy.
Other red Rhône grapes are Grenache and Mourvedre, two lesser-known but very fine
grapes that are often used to blend in with Syrah. In fact, I’ve had some California
Grenache that had as much finesse and personality as some Syrah. Grenache can be just a
little less weighty on the palate.
The most popular white Rhône-style wine has always been Viognier. It can be very
aromatic, like a bouquet of flowers, with a smooth peach theme.
The region of Paso Robles is quietly making a name for itself as a source of high-quality
Syrah and other Rhône varietals. Its climate and soils have been producing some award-
winning Syrah in the last few years. Here are just a few of the many reliable names from

Paso Robles Wine Country, along California’s scenic Central Coast,
is already gearing up for the pinnacle of the wine growing season –
harvest. In preparation, the Alliance announced that the annual Paso
Robles Wine Country Harvest Wine Tour weekend will take place
October 19, 20 and 21, 2007. This three-day celebration is a combi-
nation of individual events held at more than 100 wineries throughout
Paso Robles Wine Country.
Consumers are invited to attend winemaker dinners, special
barrel tastings, harvest demonstrations, special tours, art and
musical appearances and much more. Check the website,

Harvest is the most colorful time of the year when warm days and
cool nights are abuzz with activity. The vineyards have changed color,
blanketing the landscape in red and gold. Scents of ripened fruit
surround you and the echos of celebration from a hard year’s work fill

Tour, October 19, 20 and 21, 2007.
The Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance represents wineries, growers
and businesses in Paso Robles Wine Country, California’s fastest growing
wine region. It encompasses more than 26,000 vineyard acres and more
than 170 wineries.
In the last six years, the number of bonded wineries in Paso Robles
Wine Country has more than tripled from 50 to 170, mostly due to an
influx of boutique and small family-owned vineyards and wineries.
The appellation’s burgeoning reputation has enticed well known Cali-
fornia wineries from other wine regions, such as Firestone Vineyard
and Turley Wine Cellars, to make sizeable investments in Paso Robles,
and also seduced a number of winemakers from other countries eager
to find New World applications for their winemaking skills.

Silent Eloquence Honored in First ‘Festival of Fools’

Festival of Fools is a celebration of the innovative and silently
eloquent work of the iconic mime artist Marcel Marceau and his actual
impact on three generations of performers.
Although Marceau himself is unable to attend due to illness, it
hasn’t stopped producers Jeff Mills of Boxtales Theatre Company and
local movement theatre master James Donlon from following through
on this festival. “There is a legacy of poetic magic in his work,” says
Mills. “Though we originally planned to bring him here, we will now
make the festival a tribute to his legacy.”
“The American public has a misconstrued view of ‘mime’ and of
‘clown,’” says Donlon, “But the physical comedy of people like Robin
Williams and Jim Carrey has been inspired down through the chain
by Marcel Marceau.”

performances at the Lobero as part of the education program.
On Saturday October 6 at 8 p.m. the Festival of Fools will tribute
the master himself. Each festival artist and some very special guests
will all perform Vaudeville style (appropriate for the old Lobero stage.)
The performances will be interwoven with video clips, stories and
music. Patrons wanting to support the Festival of Fools with a little
more can purchase the $75 tickets and are invited to a special pre-
show reception with the artists on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
