Elementary Special Education Teacher Assistant

They enable us to maintain a high ratio of skilled adults to children and to provide our students with the support they need to promote growth and inclusion into our school community. General Responsibilities To work as part of a team to support the individual goals of students with special educational needs both within the classroom and inclusively within the school and community Specific areas of responsibility include: Curriculum and Environment: Special Education assistant teachers will: work together with the teacher to create and maintain a safe, nurturing and intellectually engaging classroom promote positive integration of students with disabilities into the ISB community implement curriculum and ILP goals participate in curriculum planning and follow the teaching model established by the classroom teacher supervise student activities in either a small group, one-on-one with a student, or as an integration support during specialist classes (Art, Music, PE) monitor student health and safety

perform supervision duties during lunch and playground times, including promoting social and behavioral integration may be expected to occasionally take over the whole class in certain situations assist in the planning, preparation and care of teaching materials and resources assume supervision duties typical to classroom management support the teacher in assessing student learning assist in the personal needs of childrenhelping with toileting, meal times, dressing etc.. Relationships Special Education Assistants are responsible for developing a positive relationship with each child, their professional team and parents. They will: learn as much as possible about each child and how to meet his or her needs observe, interact, listen and respond to students as they play and work exchange information frequently and regularly with the classroom teacher establish and maintain good relationships with parents Administrative Tasks: Assistant Teachers are responsible for fulfilling all scheduled duty periods and meetings. As a member of a team, they are expected to attend departmental meetings, faculty meetings and in-service activities unless otherwise notified. They will assist the teacher in routine administrative tasks, such as daily attendance, lunch count, photocopying, distributing information to parents, etc. They will be available for other tasks as needed. Professional Development: Special education assistants should have a plan in place for their own professional development that matches the vision of the school, special education department and/or broader field of disability. Specific Qualifications and Skills The successful candidate should have or be able to demonstrate: qualifications and experience in the field of special education/ developmental disability experience with the elementary and early childhood years the schools core dispositions of respect, responsibility, reflection

the wish to work in a dynamic, multicultural environment open and effective communication good rapport strong collaborative skills literacy in IT skills flexibility and adaptability commitment to her/his own learning The successful candidate will be compensated according to the ISB Faculty salary scale. At this stage this is a one year appointment from 1st August 2010 until 30th June 2011.
