Best Answer - Chosen by Voters That's a tough conversion because a liter is a unit of volume and a kilogram is a unit of mass. The first problem with this is the fact that water has different volumes at different temperatures, so two bodies of water with equal volume could have different weights, or two bodies of water of equal mass but different temperatures would take up different volumes. Let's say in this case that the water is about about 62 degrees Fahrenheit, in which case one gallon would weigh 10 pounds.
Next we would convert gallons to liters and adjust the weight accordingly. 1 gallon is equal to 3.78541178 liters, so one liter of water would weigh 2.64172052 pounds (10 divided by 3.78541178). Then we would convert pounds to kilograms. One pound equals 0.45359237 kilograms, so that would be 1.19826427 (2.64172052 multiplied by 0.45359237 rounded to 9 significant digits) So, one liter of water at 62 degrees Fahrenheit weighs 1.19826427 kilograms. Edit: I accidently used imperial gallons, but it's the same idea, you just have to change the numbers around a bit.

O.o i thought 1L of water = 1kg of water but i am not sure now.... idk just a thought... boromir_ The answer is explained well, but uses incorrect numbers. The correct answer depends on temperature of the water, as it's density will change. At room temperature (20C or 68F) the density is 0.9982 kg per litre.

It depends on the temperature of the water. The mass of one litre of water is equal to the volume multiplied by the density (both in appropriate units). The density of water is dependent on its temperature, but is typically expressed as 1 g/mL. The change from 1 is in the third decimal point. 0% 0 Votes Tim B Litre is unit of Volume Kilogram is a unit of Weight By definition, one litre of *water* weights one kilogram. However, a litre of syrup, for instance, will weight probably more then one kilogram.
