INTRODUCTION

Hydraulic power systems require a high-pressure pump to move fluid through different types of lines and actuate different devices, such as motors and cylinders. Installing a hydraulic pump means taking into account the pumps power source, its output and, most importantly, the ability to compensate for the vibration created with the pump's operation. When installing a single hydraulic pump, make sure it can get power, can safely and efficiently attach to the hydraulic feed lines, and that it won't shake itself apart.

Location

Try and install the pump flat. Although a pump can be wall- or ceiling-mounted, this sort of installation complicates maintenance and filter changes. Make sure the pump is mounted on substantial bushings, springs or other shock absorbing system to compensate for the vibration the pump's torque will create. Welding or bolting a pump to the deck or floor will work well, but be sure to incorporate the shock absorbers. Account for their height when measuring the available overhead space for the pump's location. Finally, determine the platform (floor, deck or frame) accedes weight requirements for the hydraulic pump. Even concrete floors should be inspected for strength and durability for supporting the pump. Steel decking or vehicle frames should be well braced and reinforced as needed to over compensate for the installation.

Power supply

Of course, the pump needs power. Whether electrical- or gas-powered, getting the power to the pump means another measurement. If the pump is gas-powered, be sure it is located where there is plenty of air circulation or adequate piping to move the exhaust away. Electrical installations mean having the cables and connections coming to the pump. Inspect the location before installation to determine adequate power is available. Many industrial hydraulic pump motors require three-phase power. If there is no three-phase power available, ensure there is room for a three-phase converter near the pump.

Feedlines and filter

Finally, the pump needs to connect to the hydraulic circuit. In any solution, the best situation is bringing hydraulic hose or tubing straight to the pump. If possible, position the pump so there is no need for extraneous bending or manipulation of the line. Every bend in a highpressure hydraulic circuit is a possible fail point, and the fewer there are, the greater the efficiency for the circuit. Make sure that with the installation all the hydraulic filter housings are easily accessible. Difficulty reaching the filters can lead to procrastination to replace the filters. If it's easy to get to, though, then there is no excuse for following the manufacturer's prescribed filter change schedule.
