in the Words of our preschool Faculty

Dawn Walker, Program Coordinator & Music Teacher
My background includes classes in Kodaly, Kindermusik and Musikgarten. I have a Master of Music degree with a classical music emphasis and a broad knowledge of American folk music. I like to incorporate all of these styles in my classes, building skills through listening, singing, movement and rhythmic games.

Daniel Garcia, Music Teacher

I have worked many years as an early childhood educator and incorporate music into my daily curriculum with children in the classroom. My educational background allows me to bring a unique teaching style to my classes, incorporating singing with guitar, musical games, movement and exploration of rhythm instruments.

Lena Boot, Art Teacher

In addition to my work as an early childhood educator, my teaching passion is working with preschool-age children giving them opportunities to be creative in art. Creating art is a sensory activity that allows children to observe, explore and use fine motor and cognitive skills. Art provides them with an awareness of themselves and their surroundings.

Chaia May, Music Teacher

I have been teaching music and movement classes for the last 25 years throughout the Bay Area. My background includes training as a teacher in Music Together, Baby Suzuki, Orff-Shulwerk, voice, multiple dance forms and coursework in early childhood development.

Erin Fournier, Art Teacher

I have taught art to young children for over 10 years at CSMAs on-site art camps and through its Arts4Schools Program at local schools. I received my BFA in Spatial Art from SJSU. I enjoy providing children with opportunities to explore the arts and to work with different media in a creative, nurturing environment.

Mary Ellen Pense, Music Teacher

As a music educator for the past 25 years, I have worked with both preschool and school-aged children. My core philosophy is learning through play. Nursery rhymes, singing games, folk songs and movement are the perfect way to teach music concepts and motivate learners with active participation. This approach is especially true for the very young not yet reading and is supported by my Orff-Schulwerk training and Kodaly Association membership.

Christina Hill, Art Teacher

As both an early childhood and art educator I believe in the power of creation, exploration and expression as a means for understanding the world, others and ourselves. I have taught art, from fundamentals to mural making, in public and private schools for years and have taught environmental art and printmaking as well.

Nora Sarkissian, Art Teacher

I have taught art for over 15 years to children and adults throughout No. California. I received my Masters degree in art from the Univ. of MA and have studied art in Germany and England as well. I enjoy teaching children about the creative process through a variety of mediums including drawing, painting and clay.

Christina Stein, Music Teacher

I have a background in music from the SF Conservatory of Music. I have taught music and movement classes for young children for several years and also have a thorough knowledge of brass instruments and music theory. I enjoy exposing young children to the joys of music making!

Jo Vadeboncoeur, Art Teacher

My teaching style reflects my background in child development and art education. Learning through exploration is central to my classes. I like to set the stage with multiple projects and let the students approach the materials on their own terms. I use inquiry-based learning to engage with students. My goal is for children to be confident that they are artists and that they can try anything.

Anja Blum, Art Teacher

My background brings together architecture and art education and enables me to guide children through the wonderful process of making art. In a warm and nurturing environment I encourage children to explore new techniques and materials through a variety of activities. I love seeing children create art and gain self-esteem and confidence in their abilities along the way.

As this catalog goes to press, I have been at CSMA in an official capacity, as its executive director for approximately 275 days but I have been here in spirit since I was a 7-year-old taking piano lessons at a community music school in Trenton, N.J. That experience changed my life and helped to set the course for who I am today and why coming to CSMA is coming home for me. For several years prior to coming to CSMA I had the privilege of working at the Hewlett Foundation, being a non-profit investment banker supporting artists and arts organizations. My position as a funder provided a wonderful education about global issues and trends in arts, education and many other fields and was a singular opportunity for me to fund and facilitate important work, but I also knew that my vantage point was from the ivory tower. What I love about CSMA is that every single day, I have a front row seat seeing and hearing what happens when dedicated teachers work with students, igniting that spark of creativity and joy that is unique to the arts, and yes, even changes lives. And so, coming to CSMA takes me full circle to the setting where as a student I first experienced that spark of creativity that has continued throughout my life -as I became a singer, lyricist, arts grant maker, educator and advocate and now, as CSMAs executive director. Our annual report provides a retrospective of one year. For me, CSMA, an institution approaching its 45th year, represents a retrospective of my lifes commitment, both personally and professionally, to the arts and to the importance of Arts for All! Its great to be home in a place that is changing lives!

act? Contributing to CSMA is an investment in the future creativity and innovation for which Silicon Valley is known. Back in 1968, CSMA was a startup with angel capital of $150, 10 volunteer teachers and really big dreams. Today, CSMA is a $4.7 million nonprofit that reaches 40,000+ lives annually through music and art instruction, exhibitions and concerts, and wide-ranging in-school programs.

Financial aid opens our doors to students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Discipline. Critical thinking. Problem solving. Our faculty instills essential skills needed for the workforce of today...and tomorrow. New studies indicate a direct link between early-age music training and dramatic improvements in verbal skills and cognitive function. Art instruction supports spatial understanding and math skills. Better attendance, class performance and self-confidence all results of CSMA subsidized programs at schools serving lowincome families. The largest expense in our $4.7 million budget: the 125+ professional educators, artists and musicians who provide instruction of the highest caliber. Guess where they live and shop.
