Lighting

Is a discussion, not a lecture the principles of ligh5ng are tools

Principles of ligh/ng:

Help us predict how light will behave 1. The size of the Light Source: controls what types of shadows are produced and may aect the type of reec8ons produced by the subject/s 2. Three Types of reec/ons are possible from any surface. They determine why any surface looks the way it does (direct, diused or glare) 3. Some of these reec8ons occur only if light strikes the surface from within a limited family of angles. ASer we decide what type of reec8on is important, the family of angles determines where the light should or should not be.

Why are these important? 1. They dont change 2. Styles change - a good photographer who knows how to work with light can reverse engineer any ligh8ng situa8on and recreate it herself/himself. Understanding the principles enables us to decide what lights we need and where Before we begin to place them..

How photographers Describe LIGHT

Brightness most important quality of light Color white light Contrast high and low

DIRECT LIGHT

Direc/onal/Diused light intermediate in contrast partly direct and partly diused Shadows are present, but are soSer and not as dark as those cast by direct light Overcast/hazy days are a good source of diused light outside or a shady area Indoors, a skylight or other large window can give this type of light if the sun is not directly shining on the subject. Light from a ash or ood lamp can be diused/direc8onal if it is soSened by a ligh8ng modier like a diuser screen or umbrella

White Sheets, emergency blankets and other tools work too!

Reectors for ll light a large white cloth or large white card can lighten shadows in backlit or side-lit portraits by reec8ng onto the shaded side of the subject some of the illumina8on from the main light.

Direct Reec/on Direct reec5ons are a mirror image of the light source that produces them. They are also called specular reec5ons. Figure 4 is similar to Figure 1, but this 8me we have replaced the white card with a small mirror. Both the light source and the observers are in the same posi8ons as they were earlier.
