he all-new 2013 SrT Viper was
unveiled to the world today at the New
york international Auto Show, marking
its highly anticipated return to the high-
performance sports car market.
Te ffth generation of the iconic two-seat,
American-built supercar has been deliberately
evolved to incorporate superior craftsman-
ship, a host of new technologies and ergo-
nomic improvements while respecting its vis-
ceral legacy of outright performance.
After a gut-wrenching period of uncertainty,
the Street and Racing Technology brand team
is extremely proud that our hand-built in
Detroit, fagship supercar is back and ready
to take on the performance car world, said
Ralph Gilles, President and CEO Street and
Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports,
Chrysler Group LLC. Beyond being the fag-
ship for the new SRT brand, the launch of
the 2013 Viper proves that we simply would
not let the performance icon of the Chrysler
Group die. Willed to live on by a very special
group of performance enthusiasts inside the
company and across Viper Nation, this SRT
team under our new leadership was challenged
to not just continue the legendary Viper, but
to create a world-class supercar that would
showcase the very best we have to ofer.
Two new modelS foR any peRfoRmance buyeR
For the 2013 model year, two new models of
the iconic supercar will be hand built at the
Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit
the home for Viper since 1995. Both SRT
Viper and SRT Viper GTS models ofer new
interior and exterior designs incorporating
premium materials and new exterior surfaces
with aerodynamically functional details that
are beautifully integrated into the high-tech
carbon fber and aluminum skin. On the
inside, designers and engineers strived to re-
think all touch points; and upgrade all mate-
rial appointments and technologies.
Te SRT Viper model is meant to ofer a
perfect blend of extreme performance and a
deliberate preservation of what has become
the iconic DNA of the Viper, Gilles added.
We strove to deliver a supercar that contin-
ues to bring the driver as close as possible to
the machine.
Te SRT Viper GTS builds on the DNA of
the SRT Viper model with more technologi-
cally advanced solutions, like two-mode active
suspension, to allow this world-class GTS to
fnd new limits on the track while also open-
ing up its envelope as a more premium and
mature evolution of the classic, extreme per-
formance formula. Designed and built with
premium features and materials inside and
out, the Viper GTS will compete with the
best performance vehicles in the world with
a wide range of creature comforts, advanced
drivetrain and interior technologies.
Weve purposely evolved the iconic soul and
raw performance formula that Viper has
maintained over the years, Gilles id. Our
returning customers will see the world-class
levels of pride, quality and hand craftsman-
ship built into the 2013 Viper. With two price
classes of the SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS,
we have oferings for both the traditional core
Viper customer and for the new customer
who wants the same performance in a pack-
age with more technology and premium crea-
ture comforts.
awe-inSpiRing V-10 poweRTRain
At the heart and soul of the 2013 SRT Viper
is the venerable, hand-assembled 8.4-liter all-
aluminum, V-10 overhead-valve engine.
Improvements for 2013 include a new, ultra-
high fow and lightweight composite intake
manifold, high-strength forged pistons, sodi-
um-flled exhaust valves, new catalysts to re-
duce back pressure and an aluminum fywheel
that reduces reciprocating losses. More than
25 pounds has been shaved from the fully
dressed engine.
ouTSTanding Ride, handling and capabiliTy
Starting with a stifer structure that provides
50 percent more torsional rigidity, the chassis
of the 2013 SRT Viper benefts from numer-
ous enhancements many learned through
racing eforts with Viper GTS-R and Compe-
tition Coupe models.
Major updates include the addition of a new
aluminum X brace under the hood that ties
the suspension pickup points to the magne-
sium cowl super casting and contributes to
improved torsional rigidity and stifness. A
new aluminum impact beam at the front of
the car contributes to overall mass savings and
improved weight distribution while providing
excellent crashworthiness.
Structurally, many areas of the chassis were
reworked to take advantage of new materials,
reduce thickness in some areas and reshape
components for more structural rigidity in
others. Te result is an overall weight savings

Stopping performance for the 2013 SRT Vi-
per is engineered to provide shorter stopping
distances, better modulation, improved dura-
bility and balanced brake performance with-
out fading under extreme conditions.
Four-piston Brembo brakes with fxed-alumi-
num calipers, and vented rotors with a diam-
eter of 355 mm by 32 mm, are used at all four
corners. Brake calipers are forged and weight
optimized by fully machining all surfaces. Te
calipers are among the stifest available with
distortion from heat nearly eliminated even
under the most demanding braking condi-
tions.

Te all-new, driver-oriented interior cabins
of the SRT Viper models have been totally
revamped for 2013 with superior craftsman-
ship, premium material appointments and
performance-oriented technologies.
For the frst time, all major interior surfaces are
sewn and wrapped with additional padding
applied in comfort areas. On the Viper GTS
model, all surfaces are fully leather skinned,
and standard accent colors are applied to the
seats, doors, center console and stitching.
Quality ft and fnish across the lineup is
showcased by triple-paint-fnished Gun Metal
appliqus on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets,
window switch bezels, shifter base, park brake
bezel and the integrated passenger grab handle
on the center console.
Standard high-performance racing seats from
Sabelt feature a lightweight Kevlar/fberglass
shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer
molding technology for mass reduction and
long-term durability. Both driver and passen-
ger enjoy improved comfort from thigh sup-
port and deep side bolsters designed to match
the extreme lateral acceleration capabilities of
the SRT Viper.
Designed specifcally for the 2013 SRT Vi-
per, the new 7-inch, full-color, customizable
instrument cluster display uses a full-time
analog tachometer readout in the center to
confrm the performance driving feedback
philosophy of the Viper. Drivers have a wide
range of custom and personal options such as
an additional digital speedometer readout just
below the tachometer. Te vehicle informa-
tion is clearly communicated with easy-to-un-
derstand icons. Intuitively controlled through
a simple four-way teering-wheel control, the
driver can confgure the screens to display the

information they desire, easily mixing and
matching information.
Uconnect Access provides new level of
connectivity
Te 2013 SRT Viper lineup includes the
new, next generation Uconnect Access in-
vehicle connectivity system that provides
drivers with access to more information,
emergency services, more entertainment and
improved graphics.
Viper customers can choose between two
Uconnect Media Centers, RA3 and RA4,
which provide a range of new features and
multiple ways to control media in the vehicle.
Te system includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen
along with a set of hard keys for commonly
used functions, including traditional knobs
for tuning the radio bands and radio volume.
Touchscreen buttons along the bottom of
the screen allow drivers to easily access the
radio, climate controls, navigation, phone,
and new, select, certifed applications. Te
new, highly sculpted steering wheel has a
host of fnger-tip mounted controls for au-
dio, Uconnect, cruise control (frst applica-
tion) and launch control.
SiriusXM Travel Link also is available with
Uconnect, providing premium data services
and information to make every trip more
efcient. SiriusXM Trafc works with the
vehicles navigation system to display traf-
fc speed and trafc fow information along
with accident information to assist drivers
in routing around congested areas. An ex-
panded SiriusXM channel lineup includes
exclusive programming, including the new
SiriusXM Latino channels, an auto industry
frst.

unmistakable silhouette of the iconic super-
car, return on the 2013 SRT Viper models

a great value. With a stifened suspension,
best-in-class 283 horsepower engine, center-
mounted tachometer and performance-in-
spired interior and exterior design cues, the
2012 Dodge Avenger R/T ups the driving
fun factor.
Dodge engineers tuned the Avengers suspen-
sion specifcally to the R/T model. Tey in-
creased roll stifness by 18 percent and spring
rates by 17 percent in the front and more
than 12 percent in the rear. Front strut damp-
ing rates are increased 15 percent, rear strut
damping rates are increased almost 20 per-
cent and the rear stabilizer bar diameter is 2
mm larger, increased from 19 mm to 21 mm.
Te suspension changes result in a spirited,
performance sedan driving experience.
Unique exterior design elements of the 2012
Dodge Avenger R/T include a unique body-
color grille, black headlamp background, R/T
fender stripes on the front quarter panel and
unique 18-inch aluminum wheels. Te perfor-
mance elements carry through to the rear of
the vehicle with a spoiler and the R/T badge.

92 mm to 96 mm for a total displacement of
5.0 liters (5,038cc). In addition to the large
displacement, direct injection technology has
been added. Tis high-pressure direct injec-
tion system (over 2,200 psi) dramatically in-
creases power and torque while reducing fuel
consumption and emissions. Compression
ratio has been increased from 10.4 to 11.5:1
for greater thermal efciency and output. Te
Tau also receives a revised bed plate for im-
proved block rigidity and lower NVH as well
as camshaft carriers and a roller timing chain
to improve valvetrain stability.

across staggered barrels and then up
a 25-foot steel mountain hillclimb. And
then you go get tossed off a mechanical
bull, right before you head into huge
convention center full of country
western clothing, jewelry, furniture, and
other sale items. Hard to believe you
can do all that in one day?
It wouldnt be diffcult to imagine if you
were in Las Vegas enjoying The ACM
Experience.
For the past few years, the Academy of Coun-
try Music has been trying to put together a
lifestyle-oriented family fair to honor some of
country musics biggest stars with a big award
show, as well as provide many of country mu-
sics customers a chance to listen to their favor-
ite artists. And where there are country mu-
sic fans, there will be people who love pickup
trucks.
Tats why Ram Truck decided to step in and
be the title automotive sponsor for the ACM

Experience. Ram truck fans and country mu-
sic fans are very similar they have a lot in
common, said Ram President and CEO Fred
Diaz. He was on hand all weekend greeting
people at the Ram Ride and Drive, where
anyone could jump in a new truck and loop
around a short track. Although Diaz couldnt
talk about how much money Ram paid for
the exclusive automotive sponsorship, Ram
did have vehicles placed all around Las Vegas,
as well as acting as the chaufeur vehicle for
the biggest country stars attending the ACM
awards show. Our favorite new celebrity on
hand was the Case IH farm equipment set out
on the Ram ride and drive area. Maybe next
time well get to drive one of those.
If the course for the Ram Ride and Drive looks
familiar, it should. Tis was basically the same
obstacle course at the 2012 Chicago Auto
Show, where Chrysler had drive-along oppor-
tunities for its Jeep, Fiat and Ram brands. Tis
course was a little more compact, but it seemed
to be popular with many of the attendees.
Tis was the frst year that event organizers have
tried the full ACM Experience, which is a free,
country-music lifestyle event thats open to the
public and where truck enthusiasts can come
and shop, eat and listen to popular country-
music artists in outdoor and indoor settings, as
well as a few more formal venues.
Te event seemed to be popular enough to jus-
tify doing again next year, but from what the
Ram folks are saying about the interest they
got from test drivers, it looks like theyll be on
board to do it again no matter where the ACM
people decide to have the next event.
Ram seems to be looking to tighten the bond
between customers and country music. Can
a Living Country Ram option package be
far away?

started in November 2010, the idea of a power-
ful rear-wheel drive Kia saloon had been perco-
lating in the minds of Kias European designers
for some time. Tis concept allows us to ex-
plore exciting new design directions, as using a
rear-drive layout creates very diferent propor-
tions compared to a front-wheel drive car, says
Peter Schreyer, Kias Chief Design Ofcer. Te
classic front-engined, rear-wheel drive layout of
a performance saloon has distinct appeal not
just for the domestic Korean audience, but also
for the European and American markets.
At the onset of this project, adds Gregory
Guillaume, Kias European Design Chief, the
design team was inspired by the spirit of iconic
1970s GT cars: sumptuous and elegant vehi-
cles capable of whisking passengers from Paris
to the South of France in efortless style and
at high speed. We wanted to create something
similarly graceful, athletic and confdent, but
not aggressive or overbearing.
Tis focus of dynamism and pace is sharpened
by the cars aeronautical theme, headlined
by the multi-piece propeller-style alloy and
carbon-fbre wheels, the jet-themed rear-view
cameras, the low-slung front air intake, the
aerodynamically efcient rear difuser and the
winglets that curve in from the front fanks and
fow into the headlamps.

Tis particular design motif draws inspiration
from the seminal Kia Kee concept car, shown
at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007. Indeed,
Kia GT has a strong design lineage, with a
number of central design elements that link it
to last years Pop concept and the Kee, ensuring
a high degree of visual continuity despite their
divergent styles and themes.
One of Schreyer and Guillaumes key goals was
to ensure that the cars proportions couldnt be
mistaken for anything other than a rear-wheel
drive performance saloon. Hence the extend-
ed bonnet with the front wheels pushed right
to the very front of the car, the cab-rearward
stance, powerful rear shoulders and truncated
rear end.
Te Kia GTs silhouette accelerates away from
the A-pillar towards the rear of the car, and this
impression of athleticism is enhanced by the
copper signature line that runs from the base
of the A-pillar and along the roofine to end
ahead of the base of the rear windscreen. And
in a neat touch, the tick-shaped motif recalls
the front quarter-light windows of the rakish
GT cars that inspired the Kia design team.
Te inspiration for the use of copper came
after a visit by Kias colour and trim team to
the DMY International Design Festival Berlin
Germanys key event for contemporary and
conceptual design where this warm tactile
metal was one of the stand-out materials of the
show. Te materials warmth is balanced by the
coolness of the Kia GTs pale grey paintwork,
with its mica fakes, that subtly captures nu-
ances of light.
Teres a tangible sense of strength and coher-
ence to the Kia GTs fowing lines from every
angle it brims with intent and purpose, a vital
element of Schreyers approach to design. Tis
impression of solidity is further reinforced by
the way the roofine extends past the C-pillar
to meet the rear screen, hunkering the car clos-
er to the ground.
Tis powerful confdence is balanced by eye-
catching details. Te brake calipers are fnished
in copper, creating a neat visual link with the
cars signature line. Te contours of the castel-
lated top of the windscreen fow into the roof,
itself subtly bubbled to create further headroom
for driver and front passenger. And the bonnet
features a discreet power bulge and air intake,
hinting at the cars performance potential.
Both Schreyer and Guillaume are particularly
passionate about the Kia GTs lights. Te alloy-
framed central grille is fanked by complex head-
lamp units that each house a bank of six deeply
recessed LED illuminators, to create a highly
distinctive nocturnal signature. Te advanced
construction of the headlamps is mirrored by
the single sweeping wing-shaped tail light that
fows around the cars fanks and incorporates
two sets of three upright stanchions.
Te front doors and rear-hinged rear doors
open outward at a slight upward angle, imbu-
ing the car with what Schreyer describes as an
air of grace and confdence. Despite its low
stance, fast roofine and shallow glasshouse, the

Kia GTs clean and uncluttered cabin archi-
tecture has created a spacious and airy interior
with generous accommodation for the driver
and three passengers.
Te single-piece seats foat on arched supports,
further accentuating the cabins spacious di-
mensions. Te Kia design team deliberately
chose to emphasise the proportions of the
transmission tunnel to reinforce the power
and performance of the saloon, but then bal-
anced this muscularity by moving away from
a button-laden centre console and creating a
strongly driver-centric layout.
Te glass instrument panel similar to that
frst seen on last years Pop concept car fea-
tures three layers of organic LEDs. Tese not
only give it a three-dimensional depth but also
allow a wealth of information to be displayed
at the drivers command, freeing up the centre
console from the usual proliferation of con-
trols, buttons and displays. Fingertip controls
mounted on the small, dished, three-spoke
steering wheel allow the driver to select the de-
sired data display.
Tis sophisticated instrument panel foats
above the centre console, further enhancing
the cabins sense of space. Te large red starter
button and twist-and-go transmission selector
are combined in a single compact unit, fur-
ther freeing up space on the central transmis-
sion tunnel. Playback from the cigar-shaped
rear-view cameras is displayed on a pair of
compact and thin LED screens mounted on
the doors perfectly positioned in the drivers
line of sight.
Te warm shades of copper used along the
glasshouse create a visual link with the bufed
surface of the metallic-treated leather used
throughout the cabin, and this russet cabin hue
is enriched by the tint of the glasshouse.
Te idea behind this leather surface treatment
is simple the areas with which the driver and
passengers come into regular contact become
bufed and smooth, creating a warm and wel-
coming patina to the cabin.
Schreyer believes this concept is less about de-
sign specifcs and more about a general feeling
of stance, proportion and balance elements
that will infuence and guide his design teams
approach to their next project.
One of the great things about working on
this project was that this is a very real car, says
Schreyer. It felt good to be working on a car
that could roll down the road tomorrow. Yes, it
would be a dream to put this into production
it has a logical layout, with four seats, and
good luggage space, and its also engaging and
dynamic and makes a strong statement. Its ex-
actly the kind of car Kia should be making.
