Goals of Retail Store Lighting:

Significantly reduce energy costs Attract customers Highlight features/displays Enhance the colors, textures and forms of the merchandise Create a vibrant and aesthetically pleasing shopping environment Facilitate merchandise evaluation to initiate purchases Enable completion of a sale
To engage a client, the retailer must create the right environment. A customer who is excited about their shopping experience will stay longer, spend more money and enjoy coming back. The quantity and quality of illumination, the impression it creates about the merchandise and the effect it has on the retail areas appearance are all factors in a successful sale. A designer must consider a variety of key characteristics when developing lighting designs including lamp life, system efficiency, lumen maintenance, color rendering and appearance, daylight integration and control, light distribution, points of interest; cost, system control and flexibility. Con-Techs retail store lighting solutions will help you catch a customers eye, draw them into the store and keep them there. Once in the store, using Con-Techs products will allow you to enhance the fabrics, textures and colors of your merchandise, highlight features and displays and captivate the shopper through the completion of the sale. Our extensive product selection allows you to create the perfect lighting solution every time.

goals

As customers enter the store they immediately form an impression which influences the duration of the shopping experience. It sets client expectations on the quality of merchandise in your store as well as their overall motivation to make a purchase. The environment created should be aesthetically pleasing, compliment architecture and merchandise and fulfill primary visual requirements. The lighting should provide a seamless transition between the entryway and the rest of the space where ambient lighting sets the mood and general tone of the space. Choosing the right lighting is critical for projecting the desired store image, focusing and attracting attention and enhancing the appeal of merchandise leading to purchase. Using inexpensive fluorescent lighting and high light levels convey cost-consciousness. Decorative lighting fixtures incorporated with stylish embellishments, such as artisan glass shades from our Rock Cottage Glass Collection, give a store a more distinct personality.

accent task

Accent Lighting
Accent and Display Lighting reinforce design aesthetics and create a dramatic emphasis on merchandise with a focused light source. Accent lighting is used to highlight shape, texture, finish and color of merchandise so customers are drawn to it. It is important to make illumination precise and of higher intensity than the surrounding ambient light. The IESNA recommends a 3:1 ratio of accent lighting to ambient light to make merchandise stand out. Point sources such as Con-Techs Micro/LyteTM use MR16 and AR111 lamps because they are ideal for accent lighting because they can be controlled and directed.

Task Lighting
Task lighting is most effective when used as a supplement to a general lighting in workspaces, counter tops, and conference areas. Effective task lighting should eliminate shadows on the specific illuminated area while preventing glare. Con-Techs pendant fixtures and rail or cable systems are one of many solutions for task lighting applications. Providing pendant luminaries at the point of sale will provide adequate light for sales work, cash wrap and functions as a way finder for customers.

wall wash display

Display Lighting

Wall Wash Lighting

Wall Wash Lighting draws the customer into the space and builds depth. It defines form and space while highlighting texture. It visually increases the size of a room and makes the space seem lighter and more open, and by using high intensities, can increase the perceived brightness of the space. Con-Techs Cove Lighting, such as the CTL70DEWW and CTL14254/HO further open the space, elevating the ceiling and enhancing the architecture with long, shadow free, uninterrupted lines of light.

Display lighting allows you to draw out the best traits of the merchandise and is supplementary to the general diffuse lighting. You help influence the customers impression by highlighting the products best attributes such as form and texture. If this light is directed too obliquely, it can result in objectionable shadows.

perimeter
.

Perimeter Lighting
The goal of perimeter lighting is to draw customers from the main aisles into merchandising space. It creates a pleasant environment and adds to the visibility and visual impact of the displays on the walls. Perimeter lighting also draws attention to the merchandise and reinforces design aesthetics. Because vertical brightness influences the customers impression of the store, it is important that vertical surfaces are lit for visual comfort, pleasantness, spaciousness and visual and directional cues. Perimeter lighting helps define merchandising spaces, provides vertical lighting for wall displays and makes the retail space feel larger.

window

Window Lighting
The retail window draws in potential customers. Attract customers with drama, engaging the passerby emotionally with intense white or colored light using uniform saturated illumination. It should be a powerful attraction, providing a link between the passerby and the merchandise within the store. Some factors to consider when designing show window lighting are: merchandise strategy, merchandise type and characteristics, location of the show window, night and day use, associated ambient luminances, open back or enclosed configuration, size and shape, contour and slant of the glazing, brightness from daytime and nighttime reflections, interior surface reflectances and colors, flexibility requirements, and size and location of graphics.

case/ counter rack

Case and Counter Lighting

Showcase lighting requires three to five times the illuminance of circulation area lighting. Different lamps can be used to achieve different accenting effects. Fluorescent lamps provide a continuous line of light, whereas incandescent, miniature halogen lamps or LED fixtures are better used to achieve closer color rendition and sparkle in applications like a jewelry case or to display glassware.

Rack Lighting
The purpose of rack lighting is to attract customers to and allow easy evaluation of merchandise. The lighting system that is selected should accomplish two things: fully illuminate the merchandise and accurately display color and texture. Concealed, baffled light sources can be used in large, cased wall areas and flush or surface mounted adjustable ceiling accent lights should be used in open rack areas where the illuminance on the clothing should be greater than the illuminance from ambient lighting.

dressing
Dressing Room Lighting

Dressing room lighting is imperative because this is where the purchase decision is made. High quality light is needed to provide form and texture to merchandise and make colors appear natural and realistic. Lighting must be complimentary to the type of merchandise being sold.

track rail recessed specialty

Xelogen Lamps - 12 and 24 Volt

Xelogen lamps are the safe alternative to Halogen lamps and can be used in place of Halogen lamps that require a G4 or GY6.35 base. The low-pressure Xenon gas eliminates the danger of the lamp bursting and the UV rays are less damaging than Halogen lamps. Xenon lamps produce less heat than their Halogen counterparts and require no protective glass shielding. Average lamp life: 20,000 hours.

Halogen Lamps - 12 and 24 Volt

Halogen lamps produce whiter, longer-lasting and more efficient illumination than incandescent lamps. They are ideal for multiple applications including display, task and general lighting that require superior lumen maintenance with dimmable, maximum beam control. MR8, MR11 and MR16 (Mirror Reflector) lamps feature smaller, more exact point-source filaments which generate precise, white illumination that is ideal for accenting and creating dramatic lighting effects. Average lamp life: 2,000 to 6,000 hours. AR111 and PAR36 utilize larger parabolic reflectors along with a capped filament in order to distribute a more compressed light beam that illuminates up to five times the intensity of MR lamps. Average lamp life: 2,000 to 3,000 hours.

lamps

Lamp Types

Halogen Lamps - 120 Volt

MR16 and T4 lamps take advantage of Halogen technology with a GU10 base for line voltage use. They produce whiter, longer-lasting and more efficient illumination than incandescent lamps. Average lamp life: 1,000 to 2,000 hours.

Incandescent Lamps

A, PAR and BR incandescent lamp technology has advanced greatly through the years, making it the standard by which all other illumination is judged. Con-Techs incandescent lamps are easy to install, cost-effective to operate and dim, and utilize inexpensive fixtures or ballasts. Average lamp life: 2,000 hours.

Quartz Halogen Par Lamps

Most frequently used in retail environments, Quartz Halogen lamps are two to three times more efficient than conventional incandescent lamps. Their precise beam control make them ideal for highlighting merchandise and settings. Average lamp life: 2,000 - 3,000 hours.

Metal Halide Ceramic ARC Tube Lamps

T4, T6, PAR, ED-17 and DE lamps are used for both directional and wash lighting, a more intensive center beam makes them ideal for placement in higher ceilings, foyers, lobbies, and retail and commercial spaces that require long burning lamps. Three to five times more efficient than Halogen PARs, they provide superior color rendering, pull less heat into their environment and last up to three times longer. Average lamp life: 9,000 to 12,000 hours.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps

With a variety of sizes, wattages and color temperatures, CFLs provide dramatic energy efficiency. It is distinguished from other lamps by its multiple small-diameter fluorescent tubes which are incorporated into a single-ended base plug. Average lamp life: 12,000 hours.

T5 High Output Fluorescent Lamps

The most advanced fluorescent illumination is the T5 featuring a 5/8 diameter fluorescent lamp. Unlike the multiple tubes found in CFLs, and individual tube in a T5 can distribute excellent illumination coupled with precise control. Average lamp life: 16,000 to 20,000 hours.
