PART B (5 X 16=80 Marks) 11.i.a) A mild steel rod of 50mm diameter is subjected to a force as shown in fig. Find the elongation of the rod. Take E= 200*10 N/mm(8).

b) The composite bar is rigidly fixed at the ends. An axial pull of P=15KN is applied at Bis 20 . Find the stresses in each material at 80 . Take s= 11*10-6/ = 24*10-6/ Es=210KN/mm2, Ea=70KN/mm2. (8)

Or 11.ii. a) An aluminum cylinder of diameter 60mm located inside a steel cylinder of internal diameter 60mm and external diameter 90mm. The assembly is subjected to a compressive force of 200KN. What are the forces carried and stresses developed in steel and aluminum? Take Es=200Gpa&, Ea=50Gpa (8) b)A bar of 30mm diameter is subjected to a pull of 60KN. The measured extension on gauge length of 200mm is 0.09mm and the change in diameter is 0.0039. Calculate the Poissons ratio and the value of the three moduli..(8)

Or 12.a) A beam 8m long is simply supported at the ends and carries a uniformly distributed load of 1500N/m and three concentrated load of 1000N, 2000N and 4000N acting respectively . Draw shear force& Bending moment diagram.(16)

Or b) A timber of rectangular section is to support a load of 20KN uniformly distributed over a span of 3.6m, when the beam is simply supported. If the depth of the section is to be twice the breadth and the stress in the timber is not exceed 7N/mm2.find the breadth and depth of the cross section. How will you modify the cross section of the beam, if it carries a concentrated load of 30KN placed at the mid span with the same ratio of breadth and depth.(16) 13a) A hollow shaft is to transmit 300Kw power at 80rpm. If the shear stress is not exceed 50N/mm2 and diameter ratio is 3/7.Find the external and internal diameter if the twist is 1.2 and length is 2m.Assuming maximum torque is 20% greater than mean. Take C=80GN/m2(16) or b) A helical spring of circular cross section wire 18mm in diameter is loaded by a force of 500N.The mean coil diameter of the spring is 125mm.
