We all know that money isnt the real secret to
success. But it certainly helps. Knowing that you
have a steady, reliable stream of money may not
give you endless happiness, but it certainly offers
you relief. A place from which to build. Peace of
mind.
Modern women have fought and are still fght-
ing hard for their right to economic indepen-
dence from men. But in the Western world,
despite having won the right to work many
working women are up to their eyes in debt,
maxed out on cards, credit and living off their
overdrafts. Its become a totally normal way of
life for an entire generation, ironically frittering
away the freedoms won by previous generations
of women activists and hard-working mothers,
on over-spending. To some, Western women,
weaned on dreams of independence, can seem
addicted to a diet of must-have fast fashion that
is turning us all into spendthrift beauty-junkies
grasping at an impossibly unsustainable Sex and
the City Lifestyle. And these are intelligent, edu-
cated, so called liberated women. Why?
Social pressures still skew female self image to
the point that over spending is often a quick fx
to adhere to impossible ideals of beauty. Argu-
ably, its easier to keep women in their place if
they are busy obsessing over the latest must-buy
handbag. Its easier to stay out of the spotlight
if you shy away from fnancial responsibility.
For many women, this is what they are used to.
According to the writers behind fnancial make-
over book, Sheconomics, women overspend for
a multitude of reasons. It does not just involve
shoes. It involves guilt. Low self esteem. Quick
fxes. Compulsions. Says Sheconomist Karen
Pine: our relationship with money is a compli-
cated one and usually one thats fraught with
all sorts of emotional issues. Very deep rooted
stuff. Stuff like clutter that you dont really
need, but unless dealt with it can prevent you
from embracing success.
If any of this resonates with you, then this spe-
cial Transform Your Money Maker insert is for
you. Money doesnt have to be a nasty niggle at
the back of your mind. It can be your friend. For

In the words of Marie-Claire Carlyle whose How
to Become A Money Magnet workshop I attend-
ed as her guest to research this piece: positive
thinking just doesnt work unless you address
reality. If you have low self worth address it.
If you have negative beliefs, change them. All
the positive thinking in the world wont make the
blindest bit of difference if you dont do that.
Talking about my interview with Secret Millionaire
Sue Stone with a girlfriend, I gushed about how
rare it was to speak to a star in the personal de-
velopment world who was so candid about how
just goddamned tough their life once was. Sue
went from coping with a broken marriage and
masses of debt, with the bank trying to repos-
sess her homewith three children to look after
to becoming a Secret Millionaire in 10 years.
Maybe were all Secret Millionaires then, my
girlfriend said.
Exactly.

The Sheconomicist
Karen Pine
Hi Karen, tell us the in-
spiration behind your
book, SheconomicS?
As a psychologist Im particularly
interested in the ways we all, from
time to time, act against our own
self-interest and persist with bad
habits. Financial behaviour is a
prime example of this. People spend
money they dont have on stuf they
dont need to impress folk they dont
know, and sometimes they feel mis-
erable or guilty after doing so!
On the face of it seems mad but
then we live in an increasingly ma-
terialistic culture that encourages us
all to live for today. And although
many people have bad money habits,
they are often reluctant to do any-
thing about them. Tats because,
for women especially, our relation-
ship with money is a complicated
one and usually one thats fraught
with all sorts of emotional issues. So
its a fascinating topic to study and
since Im also interested in behav-
iour change, its also one where psy-
chology can play an important role
in helping people and I hope I can
have a positive impact.
Many women claim money
isnt essential to success,
but it does give huge re-
lief, stability and a sense
of security that can help
them create more success-
ful lives. What does suc-
cess mean to you?
Of course, money gives us all of
those things but to me success
means knowing what makes me
happy and living with integrity and
with all parts of my life attuned. Tat
means having a job that enables me
to be actively engaged in worth-
while projects, enjoying a healthy
lifestyle and having deep meaning-
Exclusive Feature: Transforming Your Money Maker 7
ful relationships with people who matter to me. Success
also means being able to get pleasure from life stuf that
doesnt come in a shiny carrier bag. Even though I love
art, style and good design, I get just as much pleasure
from a sunset, a gripping novel or home-made bread.
Isnt it strange that despite winning
their financial independence, so many
modern day women seem to get into a
money-trap? Are women simply not used
to handling money?
Many women did not grow up handling money, being
involved in fnancial decisions or being encouraged to
be fnancially responsible. So they havent had very good
training for coping with money. Schools dont give us
much in the way of fnancial education either and per-
haps our parents infuenced us too. Fathers who think
fnances is for men and mothers who collude in this
and dont take equal control can send the wrong mes-
sages to women. Tis can lead to mixed emotions about
money, guilt, fear, etc. as well as denial and the vague
belief that someone, somewhere will sort things out for
us! Teres also so much choice today that we get over-
whelmed by the hundreds of fnancial products pre-
sented to us. Tat leads to decision paralysis - were so
scared of making the wrong decision that we do noth-
ing. And usually doing nothing (say, when it comes to
getting a pension plan or starting a savings scheme) is
the very worst thing we could do.
...were so scared of
making the wrong decision
that we do nothing. And
usually doing nothing...
is the very worst thing we
could do.
Karen, what should be the first steps to
tackling money-issues?
In Sheconomics we show women how to understand
their own money mindset so at least they can break
down some of the emotional barriers that get in the
way of sound fnancial management. Tats an essen-
tial frst step because once you are in the right frame of
mind to tackle money issues its really not at all difcult
after that.
How can women get started on trans-
forming their relationship with money
and creating financial success for them-
selves?
Psychologically - understand your own money mindset
and tackle those emotional issues or self-limiting be-
liefs. We devote a few chapters of Sheconomics to how
to do this because we think its so important. Practi-
cally - know what you want and have a game plan for
how you are going to get it. Aim high, dont be afraid
to ask for what you deserve and play the long game.
Short-termism rarely pays of when it comes to fnan-
cial success.
What are your essential tips for aspir-
ing SheconomiStS?
Study and live by the 7 Laws of Sheconomics and you
cant go wrong. Tere are lots of tips in there - such as
overpaying a bit on your mortgage each month, which
makes an enormous diference to the debt - using cash
instead of credit cards if you tend to be impulsive -
keeping a spending diary - and saving automatically via
a monthly direct debit, so you dont miss the money or
feel the pain. And put some time aside for budgeting
and sorting out your fnances. Amazingly people in the
UK will watch 3 hours of TV a day but wont even de-
vote 3 hours a month to fnancial management, which
is so important for their lives. Put aside just one evening
a month to check bank statements, fle paperwork, shop
around for utilities/deals and review your savings/goals
etc and youll reap the rewards.

The Secret Millionairess
Sue Stone
Hi Sue, you are famous
for your work in personal
transformation and help-
ing others to achieve suc-
cess. Watching one of your
videos on the website,
you say how life wasnt
always easy. 10 years ago,
youd split up with your
husband, were in huge
amounts of debt and the
bank was threatening to
repossess you. What were
those initial tools that
really helped you?
1999 was the worst year ever. Tings
were desperate, I left with huge debt
following marriage breakdown. Id
hit every limit possible on my cards.
I remember having just 10 left
in my purse. I bought sausage and
mash for the kids and myself a bot-
tle of wine. And that was it.
Id hit rock bottom. But I came
clean with my family and asked
for help. And decided to help my-
self. I remember thinking: no, if I
dont do this, no-one will. I realised
if you think negatively your brain
isnt geared to create a solution. So
I started to really shift my thinking,
started to visualise where I wanted
to get to. I made it my mission to
work on myself, identify any nega-
tive beliefs and retrain my thinking.
I was totally self taught our brains
are like a muscle, we have to prac-
tice. Te more we do it, the easier
it gets.
Id set myself a goal to achieve some-
thing and someone would appear to
help. Everything I was focusing on
was happening. I was reading self
help books and the techniques were
working.
How did you stay positive
in such challenging times
- particularly with three
young children to look
after?
It was my children that really kept
me going they were my driving
force, to keep a roof over my heads.
Te fear was huge, how am I going
to get through the day? But I knew I
had to. Te kids would say I dont
want my pocket money because
they wanted to help. Tere were
times when I was stressed.
I did it for us. I felt responsible.
Youve also appeared on
the UKs popular TV Show,
The Secret Millionaire.
Would you like to share
a little about the pro-
gramme and your experi-
ences on the show?
I was approached by the Secret
Millionaire and sent to Coventry
a very rough area in the UK. I was
staying in a flthy, dirty house to-
tally run down in a very poor area.
But I made it my home. I had to
pretend to be a woman totally lack-
ing in confdence living a humbling
life, taking part in a radio human
interest story. Really, I was under-
cover, looking for people to help and
fnancially assist.
I had hit rock bottom in the past,
I made it my
mission to work
on myself, identify
any negative
beliefs and retrain
my thinking.
Exclusive Feature: Transforming Your Money Maker 9
but knew that there were worse situ-
ations out there. Te programme re-
ally added a new dimension on this.
It was very humbling. It made me
realise just how lucky I really was.
I feel very privileged to have taken
part in it.
I helped a girl called Anna who
was very physically disabled, the
same age as my daughter. She was
in pain all the time, but still wanted
to help others by working on the
hospital radio, for example. She was
a truly inspirational woman. I also
helped Hillz FM - a station for
wayward children who just hadnt
had opportunities in their lives. I got
involved in help to fund the project
to keep it going.
I also helped a lady called Kate who
I shared a real connection with, de-
spite our diferent lives. She has a
tremendous passion to empower
women through the arts and so I am
helping her get the equipment she
needs to do this.
Its not about
money, its
about loving
life and feeling
passion around
life.
Success is a very personal
term to many, isnt it Sue?
Whats your own defini-
tion?
Its not about money, its about lov-
ing life and feeling passion around
life. I truly embrace every moment
we have. I focus on everything I
have to be grateful for. Its about
feeling at peace, feeling empowered.
One thing I feel really successful
with is my work I absolutely just
do not do negativity any more.
Who are the inspirational
women in your life? Can
women really inspire each
other to success?
My mother was a great inspiration
to me and a fantastic role model.
Mother Teresa was a fantastic in-
spiration. Women like the women I
met through Te Secret Millionaire.
Women who have been through
challenges and have taken responsi-
bility. Tere are so many.
Women as we know are very re-
sourceful. I remember a very high
fying man told me about 20 years
ago, a woman on the top table is
worth three men.
What I like is that we genuinely
want to help and share with each
other. Its about sharing and is all
for the greater good. Ive met oth-
er Secret Millionaires and we are
all here for the bigger picture. Te
Dalai Lama was quoted as saying
its the women that will save the
world I really believe that. What
holds women back is the belief that
they cant or shouldnt do it I help
women remove these barriers.
You seem to have an array
of animals where you live!
Tell us about your beauti-
ful home.
I love my home! Something I vi-
sualised was I wanted to be happy
in my home and I have really cre-
ated that: an open, fresh space with
a positive energy. I live happily with
my children. We have horses, chick-
ens, ducks, cat and wild rabbits.
Did you tell your fam-
ily what you were doing
while you were working
on yourself?
No one really knew! It was only af-
ter they noticed the diference in me
that people started to say: I want a
bit of what youve got, Sue. If some-
one feels good, its like we have a
billboard in front of us. People can
sense these things. As it evolved,
thats how I ended up doing what
I do.
How can women trans-
form their relationships
with money?
Te biggest thing is not to get caught
up in negative beliefs around money.
Tinking like: money doesnt grow
on trees, for example, that we may
pick up from childhood. Te other
thing is gratitude. When you get a
hundred pounds, instead of think-
ing thats not going to go far be
grateful. Identify your beliefs about
money.
If we start to believe that money can
fow to us easily, then it will. A lot
of people, their self worth is low it
just doesnt happen. But the funda-
mental thing is to start with these
beliefs, it really works.
Money is energy we have to clear
the clutter out of our lives, mentally,
emotionally and physically. Dont
hang on to the old, we need to make
way for the new.

How did the inspiration
for your book, Love Life,
Live Life come about?
What challenges did you
face writing it?
A lot of people kept saying to me,
you should write a book. My initial
belief was I couldnt write a book.
My belief was that it would take
months stuck in the attic. I started
visualising myself writing a book,
told my brain that I could do it.
Within two weeks, it came to me
Once I focused on it and believed
I could to it visualised myself en-
joying it I did it. First of all I self
published and then a large publisher
took it on.
What are your plans for
the future?
I have recently established the Sue
Stone Foundation to spread positiv-
ity and love across the world. Its
all about successful living, positivity
creates LOVE;
Love of life
Outstanding results
Vibrant energy
Empowerment
My passion is to help as many peo-
ple as I can to shift their thinking
from negativity and fear to positiv-
ity and hope by inspiring and mo-
tivating them to live their best life.
And finally, what are your
secrets of success?
Have a clear vision, passion and be
totally focused and committed. Its
my passion and I really walk my
talk. Believe in yourself. Identify
and eliminate negative beliefs that
hold you back. Never give up and
be deaf to the negative people who
tell you you will never achieve your
dreams and goals. Dont let tempo-
rary set backs become permanent
failure. Enjoy the journey and love
life.

Marie-Claire Carlyle
What was a pivotal mo-
ment of change for you?
The breakthrough?
Te key thing was going from be-
ing a horrendous sales person not
being able to sell a thing to to-
tally changing my attitude and
performing incredibly well. I cant
describe how soul destroying it
is to announce to 60 people that
you havent mad your targets. But
I realised it was my limiting belief
about sales people that was running
the show once Id addressed that,
things started to change.
How can women best iden-
tify the negative belief
that holds them back the
most?
Te obvious thing is to go on a
workshop or read the book. Te
thinking that got you into your cur-
rent situation will not get you out
of it. Its really helpful to work with
something outside of your scenario
in a group or with a friend. Asking
provocative questions of your sub-
conscious. Once youve identifed
the belief, you can do things difer-
ently: being aware means it wont
run the show.
Exclusive Feature: Transforming Your Money Maker 13
Why do you think that
women do not ask for what
they are worth?
Culture, the way were brought up
theres still an inbuilt lack of self
worth from birth that is afecting
women worldwide that comes from
centuries of cultural attitudes. But it
doesnt matter how much feminism
fghts for change, unless women ad-
dress their unconscious beliefs that
they are worth less than men, there
wont be any change. Its not a ques-
tion that women talk about enough.
What has power over women is an
inner unconscious belief that they
are worth less than men.

Ready to be fnancially successful?
Youve found your passion, you want
to make a diference - but youre
not yet sure how that translates into
paying the bills. Here are three ways
to earn a living doing what you love:
Create a needs-based
business
Many entrepreneurs are motivated
primarily by a desire to make mon-
ey. My guess is that youre difer-
ent. Youre being led into self-em-
ployment by your heart and by your
desire to make your unique contri-
bution. Perhaps you had a personal
experience with coaching, yoga, raw
food, Reiki, osteopathy, declutter-

you want to share this with others.
If you ardently believe that everyone
should try this amazing thing, its
infuriating when people arent lin-
ing up outside your house, banging
down your door and jamming your
email account with their interest.
Its beautiful and brilliant to be
passion-led AND its also useful to
learn from those market-led entre-
preneurs so you can fgure out: Who
needs you? Whos going to want to
fnd you, pay you and recommend
you to others?
I strongly believe in doing deep re-
search with your Tribe (or niche)
and hearing their needs. What are
their main struggles? What does it
feel like for them to be in a dysfunc-
tional relationship, dealing with back
pain or drowning under paperwork?
As you connect heart-to-heart,
youll quickly see how your unique
blend of gifts, talents, training and
life experience actually make you a
solution to someones pain. Tis cat-
alyzes you into seeing marketing as
your duty and helps you realize why
someone would happily pay in order
to get relief from their challenges.

Have you started out pursuing your

early days, its just a hobby you do

Its so important to lean in to the support that other

Moreover, Ive found it to be vital to connect in with
whatever you consider to be a higher power - whether
for you thats Te Universe or nature or Love or Te
Divine. It doesnt matter what you believe in or how
you do it - just do it! It taps you into a far greater sense
of resourcefulness than youd have by yourself and puts
you frmly in the fow of proftability.
We self-employed women can often fall into that pain-
