Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith was in
town, along with local candidate Jason
Hale on April 14 to serve ice cream and an-
swer questions and concerns. Incumbent
MLA Arno Doerksen was in town visiting
with the seniors at the Wheatland Lodge
and door knocking on April 17 in advance
of the Provincial Election on April 23.

It was the Progressive Conservatives
against the Wildrose party one last time
as the Strathmore & District Chamber of
Commerce hosted an all-candidates fo-
rum April 10 at the Civic Centre.
Only the two high profle candidates
took part in the event, answering ques-
tions on political issues.
It has been my privilege to be your
MLA for the last four years and it has
been an exciting and dynamic time for
our province, said Progressive Conser-
vative MLA Arno Doerksen.
Jason Hale of the Wildrose party ex-
pressed his appreciation for the oppor-
tunity to speak to area residents.
Several topics were given to the can-
didates and they were given equal time
to respond.
On the question of property rights,
Doerksen advocated the current govern-
ments considered Albertans rights. The
existing bills implement provisions for
adequate consultation, a property rights
advocate, full compensation for all loss-
es and inconveniences and access to the
court system. He feels a lot of work has
gone into the process and to rescind the
bills would be a backward step.
Hale countered that no government or
court offcial should have the opportuni-
ty to trample individual and landowner
rights and the bills need repealed. Prop-
erty rights must be frst and foremost.
To address healthcare, the PCs would
continue to fund seniors accommoda-
tion initiatives, implement family care
clinics, complement existing services
and provide extended hours. There
would be support bringing young doc-
tors to rural areas by granting tuition
reductions over 10 years. Upgrades to
the Strathmore hospital however, would
not happen for at least two years. The
introduction of nurse practitioners and
expanded pharmacist duties with in-
creased training encouragements will
also make improvements.
Hale pointed out those were good
ideas. However, money should be used
to fully staff existing hospitals and fx
the current infrastructure before more
money is wasted by throwing dollars at
a broken system.

The hardworking ladies of the Carse-
land Public Beneft Club celebrated 100
years at an event held last weekend.
Alberta Lieutenant Governor Colonel
(Retd) Donald Ethell, and local MP Kev-
in Sorenson were among the dignitaries
who attended the event at the Carseland
Community Hall on April 14 to recog-
nize the efforts of the longtime service
club.
Formed in 1912 by 32 women, the
Carseland Public Beneft Club has acted
as a service group in various capacities
focused on Carseland and area.
The club began with many efforts re-
lated to WWI, such as collecting money
to send supplies to prisoners of war and
knitting socks, slings and bandages for
the Canadian Red Cross.
In the 1920s the club fundraised for
the frst playground at the local school
and lobbied for the school grounds to
be supervised at lunch hour. The play-
ground cost $123.45 and was installed
in 1924.
They continued wartime support ef-
forts during WWII, such as writing letters
to soldiers overseas and sending care
packages. They also cancelled lunch at
meetings and donated the tea and sugar,
which was rationed at the time.
This is what Alberta is all about, said
Lt. Gov. Ethell, who spoke at the event.
Theres nothing more special or heart-
warming than getting a package from
home.
The club was approached by various
service groups over the years, such as
the Red Cross and the Womens Insti-
tute, asking if the club would become a
local branch for their activities.
The Public Beneft Club always chose
to remain independent and keep a focus
on Carseland and area, said Teri McKin-
non, an organizer for the event, noting
that the club has always been fercely
independent of large service organiza-
tions but still aided important causes.
They were not bound by any other
authority than themselves, she said.
The club also lobbied government and
the rail service to ensure safer practices,
such as more road signage and safer
railway crossings.
Meanwhile, the club actively fund-
raised for local projects over the years,
such as numerous renovations for the
Carseland Community Hall. The club ca-
tered many events and held bingos to
raise funds.
Much of the history of the organiza-
tion can be found in Trails to the Bow
and More Trails to the Bow, two Carse-
land-area history books published by
the Public Beneft Club.
The planning for the centennial cel-
ebration began a year ago, according
to McKinnon. The club chose a military
theme to recognize the early efforts of
the club toward WWI and WWII.
Though men were allowed to join af-
ter a vote to open membership to any-
one in 1998, no man has joined the club
to date.
The Public Beneft Club is made up of
21 ladies from Carseland and area and
continues to donate thousands of dollars
to local causes, such as $8,000 toward a
new fre truck in 2002 and $40,000 to-
ward new playground equipment at the
Carseland School in 2008.

Are you adding a spoiler,
enhanced your engine or
raised the suspension? Your
ride is looking rather good and
sounding fne but youre not
done. When changing your
vehicle with after-market add-
ons you may no longer have the
right coverage.
An after-market anti-theft
device can reduce your
premiums. If you have spent
money on improving your
sound system then you could
see an increase because now
you have gone over the $1500
limit.
Be aware that certain
modifcations can put you into
a higher-risk position and some
will cost you more money on
your policy. Why?
* Youve now joined the theft
wish-list because your vehicle
looks so good.
* You can go a lot faster now which increases
the chance of having an accident.
* Youve increased the value of your vehicle.
As always we recommend that you take control
of your insurance. Before you start your project,
call your broker and fnd out what will be the
impact on your insurance. This will help prevent
an unpleasant surprise.

Both Doerksen and Hale agreed on the quality of Al-
bertas education system and continued support for educa-
tion programs, but Hale encouraged that we allow parents
to make decisions and that the money follow the student.
Doerksen pointed out that the opportunities for expan-
sion in business, gas, electric and water-based industries
are increasing. With proper planning, Albertans need to
support industry and business initiatives, so they can com-
pete globally and attract investment. He stated that the
planning for electric was done and rates monitored. It
was determined that the east-west transmission lines were
needed and were given the go ahead. There are renewed
initiatives to store water. This will have a bearing on who
gets water and how. The PCs started this initiative prior to
the election and it will be a future issue.
Hale cautioned that the stakeholders want better consul-
tation and their rights protected. Hale indicated that gas
and electric price regulation would beneft all Albertans,
not just industry providers. There should be some benefts
to Albertans from shared resources.
Hale emphasized that water is our most important natu-
ral resource. The Wildrose party wants to make sure indi-
viduals and farmers have clean affordable water. Dams and
reservoirs will ensure that will happen. Communities will
work together to meet those needs.
As far as fnancing election promises, Doerksen expected
that oil and gas revenues and oil sand royalties combined
with tax revenues would provide funds. Encouraging in-
creased business investment and increasing population mi-
gration will all go to increasing revenue. He said that using
budget cuts to provide this fnancing was nave.
Hale suggested that programs can be fnanced through
broad-based tax incentives and balancing the budget with a
focus on public services. He offered a list of misspent fund-
ing that could change to balance the budget, such as two
billion dollar carbon capture fund, 30 per cent MLA wage
increases, AHS executive bonuses, oil sands documentary
and international travel expenses.
Both candidates ended the discussion with a summary
and encouraged people to get out and vote on April 23.
I look forward to that kind of leadership, Doerksen said
about Premier Alison Redford and the PC team. I think
that is what we need in this province. Its about having an
experienced team to continue to work with Albertans.
It makes sense that MLAs should fght for the issues
and concerns of their constituents. The major theme of this
election is accountability. Doing what is right is to rule,
not the exception. Ending the culture of entitlement, pro-
moting democracy and demanding ethical and accountable
governance, that is the Alberta way, said Hale about the
Wildrose directives.

Keeping the
community
connected
Shannon LeCLair
Time Reporter
A common complaint among youth
in smaller communities is that there
is nothing for them to do. Two years
ago the Strathmore-Wheatland Ad-
dictions Team (SWAT) discussed the
complaints, and brainstormed on how
to show the youth there is plenty to
do in town.
From there we thought about the
value of putting a pamphlet together
that would consist of various orga-
nizations that deal with youth, said
SWAT member Bob Sobol.
Basically we divided it into three
separate sections, one that dealt with
sports, one with clubs and associa-
tions and one with church-sponsored
activities, focusing only on the youth
of ages 12 to 17.
SWAT has decided to do a second
edition, an updated reprint of the
pamphlet.
The plan is to spend the next couple
of months updating the information
and inviting anyone who feels their
group may be relevant to youth be-
tween the ages 12 to 17.
Things consistently change in
Strathmore, we know theres new or-
ganizations out there that we want to
include, and we just feel its time for
an update, said Sobol.
The philosophy of course of this
is, one, we want to show the youth
and their parents there is actually a
bunch of things to do in Strathmore
you just have to be a little interested,
and two, the more activities that we
have for youth pushes them towards
things other than illegal activities. We
want to focus on the positive on this
as well.
SWAT wants to see the pamphlet as
a resource, something people think-
ing of moving to Strathmore can look
at and see what is available to offer
their children.
Organizations listed in the previous
pamphlet will be contacted to make
sure their information is still correct.
Group and organizations that ca-
ter to teens ages 12 to 17 who were
not in the previous pamphlet are en-
couraged to contact Crystal Wahl at
cwahl@redeemer.ab.ca.

Busy times for local 4-H club
ShayLene Magwood
Crowfoot Multi 4-H
As our 4-H season starts to wrap-
up, our members are getting busier
and busier. We had our last general
meeting preparing for the end of
our 4-H year. Our speakers who
moved on to Regionals had a great
showing with some of our mem-
bers placing and all speaking very
well. Unfortunately none of our
participants made it on to provin-
cials but there is always next year!
Archery has been a busy place con-
stantly working on their shooting
and making their very own quivers,
stamping, dying and sewing them
together.
The dog agility group met again
during the month reviewing ev-
erything they learned in the year
such as the tunnels, jumps, hoops,
pause box, and of course walking
and sitting. They also created their
very own projects; personalized
dog collars. Each member of the
group stamped, punched and dyed
a collar for their furry friend. The
dog agility members would like to
thank the Biskups especially John
and Marshall for their use of their
shop, and Mike Comstock for his
help as well.
All the dogs and owners are very
pleased with their new collars. Our
regional Fun day at the Atlas coal
mine is planned on April 21, I know
we are all very excited because it
is sure to be a great time. Our ex-
change group is also having an
M&M barbeque fundraiser on April
28, so stop by at the local M&M to
pick up a burger and support our
exchange group.
A reminder to all our members
that Achievement day is fast ap-
proaching so be prepared with a
completed record book and board
for the date. Our Achievement day
will be on May 12 at the Ag Grounds
in Strathmore. We will also be hav-
ing our annual Highway clean up
on May 5, this is a mandatory event
so all members be sure to be there.
We will be participating in this
event with clubs across the prov-
ince along with many other groups.
And that is what has happened in
our Crowfoot Multi 4-H club.
Show your 4-H spirit!

Crowfoot Multi 4-H
The Crowfoot 4-H multi is hosting
an M&M Meat shops BBQ in the park-
ing lot just outside the M&M meats
store. The BBQ will begin on April 28
around 10 a.m. and will wrap up at 4
p.m. We will be selling freshly grilled
burgers, hotdogs and juice.
This fundraiser will help give our
group the chance to take part in the
Canadian Youth Exchange Program.
This program allows 4-H kids to go
other places in the world to experi-
ence fun activities. We wish to obtain
many new experiences and inherit the
culture of many other provinces.
This money will help aid the fnanc-
es of this trip and help to make the
experience worthwhile for our group
and those who will come visit our
province.
We hope you show your support
by stopping by and purchasing our
mouth watering burgers, juicy hotdogs
and washing it down with a glass of
cool fruity juice.
Thank you for your generosity and
participation of this local event. We
hope to see you there!

Fule for Thought
When Deb and I were engaged, we had to go to a
Marriage Workshop in Calgary. It was supposed to
be a way for us to get to know each other. The prob-
lem was that wed known each other for four years,
so some of the tasks we had to do were pretty lame.
This workshop cost us $50, and part of the way
through it, I begged Debbie to let us leave I even
offered to pay another $50 to her, if we COULD bail!
However, in this workshop, no one ever talked
about a HUGE problem in new marriages: learning
to actually sleep with someone else in the same bed.
I have never been a good sleeper, it has (until Doc
medicated me) always taken me a long time to fall
asleep. Not so much for Sleeping Beauty, as she
can fall asleep easily. Early on, I would lie there, lis-
tening to her sleep, while I tried to count backwards
think happy thoughts but often to no avail.
I also drove Deb crazy whenever I moved to re-
position (now THAT sounded dirty). She would re-
mind me after a Hard Days Night (favourite band
reference), that I HAVE to move slowly when I turn
over, because, or she gets scared every time! No one
at the Marriage Workshop dealt with sleep, yet thats
where we all spend about 1/3 of our lives. I tried to
remind her she didnt marry a mime, but at 7 a.m.,
she didnt fnd that so funny.
A few days after we were married, we stayed at
Debs parents place in Canmore. That night, after
toasting with the new in-laws, everyone shuffed off
to bed. This was to be MY frst experience with an-
other partners sleeping. In the middle of the night,
Deb sat up and began thanking various guests for
coming to our wedding! She went on for a few dif-
ferent couples, then quietly woke herself giggling. I
told her that I thought she got to everyone, and now
she could go back to sleep. Im sure you all have
your own stories about sleep-talking, but this was
my frst experience. In the morning, I passed her
in the hall, and said youre welcome again my
FIRST experience with her not appreciating early
morning humour!
Late one night in our frst apartment, I mustve
been infuenced by that classic TV show Miami
Vice. In MY dream, I was saving Debbie on a cab-
in cruiser, pushing off bad guys into the ocean.
The fnal guy was relentless still trying to get on
board, so I had to take drastic action. I awoke, pull-
ing back my fst from between Debbies eyes, and
realized I had just smoked her! I apologized, and se-
cretly hoped there would be no marks when she left
for school! A few years later, poor Deb was again
awakened in the night by me pounding on her legs!
In THIS dream, there was literally a river of rats
spilling over each other, fooding over our bed and
down again. I was, of course, protecting her by at-
tacking the rodents, but she didnt sound convinced.
So over time, our sleep-talking/attacking came to
an end. With time, I had even learned to move slow-
ly if I had to turn over, and not to bump her. That
was until one late night after a night of pub crawl-
ing. The Cambridge sub-division was new, so our
house was near the East farm felds. I dont know
why, but I decided after lying in bed AGAIN not
able to sleep, that I would try to do a coyote howl.
I slowly sat up, threw back my head, and howled as
loudly and as long as I could. Now, in my defence,
it WAS a pretty good howl, and we HAD been out
on the town.
I looked over at Debbie and said: that was pretty
good, eh?
She was (I thought) shaking with laughter. Sadly,
I discovered that she was not shaking with laughter,
but with fear, as I had scared the crap out of her. In
between tremors and sobs, she asked, why?
I didnt have an answer then, and I dont have one
now, but it was a good howl.
In the past few years, I developed a snoring prob-
lem. Now part of that problem was that I got ban-
ished on various nights to other rooms or couches.
In California for a school basketball trip, I even re-
sorted to sleeping in the bathroom. ANYONE can
sleep in a tub, but I found couch cushions, a com-
forter and pillow, and made a bed under the bath-
room sink! It was actually not as bad as it sounds
very dark and quiet, AND a cool temperature
as well. The only problem was having to move my
home whenever someone had to use the room!
Nowadays, my new sleep machine/mask now stop
me from snoring. Oh sure, theres the odd time
when the mask is over my ear, and the mist wakes
me, but its been pretty good. The only trouble is I
cant speak well with the mask on, and I dont get to
howl anymore. Maybe thats a good thing

Parliamentary Report
As your federally-elected representative, I have
some reservations about writing a news column
while our province is immersed in a provincial
election. Voters will want to be careful not to mix
federal issues with provincial ones while deciding
which way to cast their ballot. We can congratulate
and thank all the candidates for agreeing to stand
for election. That is not an easy decision for any-
one, and everyone who puts their name forward
should be commended.
As well, I encourage all of the citizens of our
great province to cast your vote! It is our demo-
cratic duty to exercise this political freedom for
which previous generations of Canadians fought
and died. Canadian citizens are privileged to have

The weeks of April 8 and 15 were Constituency
Offce weeks in the Parliamentary calendar and
the House of Commons was not sitting. As your
Member of Parliament, I meet with many of you
in our Constituency offce and in Satellite Offces
throughout our large geographic riding.
So far, Budget 2012, Canadas Economic Action
Plan unveiled in Ottawa last week seems to be re-
ceiving favourable reviews. For the most part, I
am hearing that we understand the austerity mea-
sures our government is taking to equip our na-
tion to pursue opportunities and remain prosper-
ous now and for the long term. We are keeping
taxes low and cutting government spending. In
the continuing uncertain global economy we are
focused on keeping Canadians working, creating
jobs, and growing the Canadian economy. Budget
2012 provides a $1.1 billion tool box of measures
to stimulate and encourage entrepreneurship, in-
novation, and research. We want federal funding to
be aimed at industrial research that will lead to the
promotion of commercial innovation and thereby
be more capable of growing Canadas economy. I
hope everyone will visit www.Budget2012.gc.ca to
read about these efforts.
The best news that Budget 2012 brings for Al-
berta is the improvement to the conditions for businesses
with investments in responsible resource development. These
frms and their workers will now have a streamlined one
project, one review system. While we all want the respon-
sible development of our provinces natural resource wealth,
we want these reviews to be fair and based on scientifc evi-
dence. The time-frame for reviews of these projects will be
shortened to facilitate making decisions earlier so as to ac-
celerate development. More projects can be considered if the
failed ones can be dispensed with more quickly. Some of
these reviews will be up to the provinces themselves to con-
duct and this is good news for Alberta.

On the eastern Canada trip
with Crowther Memorial Ju-
nior High School, I got to see
a little piece of my family his-
tory that otherwise I would
not have had the opportunity.
In St.Catharines, Ont., stands
a museum that was built in
honour of my great-great
uncle Jack Haney, who made
the frst Canadian transconti-
nental trip by automobile.
Without the chance to visit
eastern Canada, I wouldnt
have been able to witness an
accomplishment of not only a
relative, but a courageous in-
dividual who will forever be a
part of Canadian history.
Canadian adventure
Haney was paired up with
a man named Thomas Wilby
for this expedition. Wilby was
the frst to propose the trip to
the REO Motor Car Company,
and was sent to document
the journey. Haney, who had
been working for REO for
some time, was chosen be-
cause he was the most capa-
ble mechanic in the company.
Haney was just 23 years old
at the time, nearly 20 years
Wilbys junior. This did not
make the older gentleman
very pleased, and when he
described the adventure he
wrote it as if Haney had nev-
er been there.
They left Halifax on Aug.
27, 1912. This trip would lit-
erally take them from sea to
sea, Halifax N.S. to Vancouver
B.C.
The trip took 52 days, over
6,720 kilometres of mostly
gravel roads and dirt terrain.
They encountered about 960
kilometres of detours, and
had to make a lot of the trip
in reverse. This was because
there was a lower gear ratio
in reverse, making it easier to
climb steep hills. Going back-
wards was better than not go-
ing at all.
On Sept. 2, 1912, six days
into the trip, Haney wrote in
his personal diary, Had trou-
ble getting up a hill about 20
miles out of Quebec. It was
too steep for the gas to feed
with full tank so I tried back-
ing in, but when about 100 ft.
from top could not get trac-
tion.
Four French-Canadians
happended to be nearby and
sat in the rear seat to give the
car some weight, and Haney
was able to back up over the
hill.
Haneys baCkground
Born Fonce Val Haney, in
1889, he later became known
by his nickname Jack. His
parents had been school
teachers. However, when his
mother died of typhoid fe-
ver when he was just 2-1/2
years old, his father left his
teaching position to work as
a cooper. A coopers work in-
cludes, but is not limited to
making barrels, casks, buck-
ets, tubs, and pipes. Haneys
father travelled up and down
the Mississippi River, making
barrel staves at sawmills and
picking up whatever work
he could. During this time,
Haney and his sister Hazel
stayed with various aunts and
uncles who lived in the area.
During his childhood,
Haney loved the outdoors.
Spending many summers
with his uncle Jack, at a cabin
in Clarksville, Mo., along the
Mississippi, he tinkered with
motorboats, and ran them up
and down the river. It was
in his teenage years though,
Eastern Canada trip more than just educational
Jack and Annie Haney in 1914.

Residential bReak and enteR
On Monday, April 16, Strathmore RCMP received a
complaint of a break and enter in the Strathcona area
of Strathmore. Some time between the hours of 1 p.m.
and 7:30 p.m., unknown persons entered the residence
through an unlocked door. Once inside suspects took
various electronics and jewellery items.
Police would like to remind everyone to ensure their
residence and vehicles are secured by locking them
when unattended.
If anyone has any information regarding this inci-
dent please call Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968 or
Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
RCMP Briefs
that he became interested in horseless
carriages. It was this interest that led
him to becoming a maestro of the au-
tomobile, being able to tear one apart
and put it back together with ease.
Haney worked at a garage in North
Baltimore when he was 14, tinkering
with cars. It was at age 16 that he went
to work for the new Reo Motor Car Com-
pany, a second company started by Ran-
som E. Olds, who sold his frst company
(now known as Oldsmobile) to General
Motors. The Reo Car Company sold its
manufacturing operations in 1954 to the
Bohn Aluminum and Brass Company of
Detroit.
Through his hard work and dedica-
tion to the company, he was given the
chance to take on the exhibition because
of his skills in automobile mechanics.
Aftermath
Following the trip, Haney started a
taxi garage with two other men. This
business would give him the fnancial
means to make another big step in life
marriage.
Haney married Annie Swan, my great-
great aunt, on May 23, 1914.
Annie was the one to accept a plaque
in 1988, from the Canadian Automo-
bile Association, when the organization
named a good driving award in Haneys
honour. It was shortly after her 97th
birthday when she received the plaque,
and my grandparents Ron and Ruth
Swan, my father and my brother Don
and Dinsmore Swan visited her shortly
after this time.
My brother Dinsmore, who spent
some time talking with aunt Annie, said
she was still very sharp in her old age.
He said she was extremely happy that
Jack was fnally getting the credit he de-
served.
In 1989, the museum was constructed
in St. Catharines, Ont., to commemorate
Haneys accomplishment.
My mother, Eileen Swan, and I were
able to see the museum when we went
down east on the school trip. Again,
without this opportunity I would not
have been able to see this family history
for myself.
Haneys Canadian transcontinental
trip beat the Trans-Canada Highway by
over 50 years.

The Strathmore Chamber of Com-
merce hosted Strathmore-Brooks pro-
vincial candidates to address voters
questions on April 10 at the Strathmore
Civic Centre. The Liberal and NDP can-
didates were not available for this en-
gagement.
Moderator Marcy Field took written
questions from attendees prior to the
presentation and presented them to the
candidates by subject area. Field had
just completed a trip to Africa where
young people told her how important
it was for them to be involved in the
political process, because it determined
their future.
On April 23 Albertans vote. The
demographics have changed signif-
cantly since we became a province in
1905, due to the struggles and efforts
of many individuals who believed that
voting was more than a privilege. It was
a right. Exercise your right, it is your fu-
ture that is being decided, said Field.
Each candidate introduced himself
and gave reasons why they felt they
and their party could best serve the
Strathmore Brooks constituent needs.
Hale indicated he supported the Wil-
drose party because democracy and
rights were eroding and the existing
party was distant from things that Al-
bertans value. He wants to move poli-
tics back to a local level. To accomplish
this, he suggested some of the Wildrose
party changes would be:
Restoration of democracy and ac-
countability in government
Protection of property rights by re-
pealing bills 19, 24, 36 and 50
Passing a property preservation
act
Developing public health care ini-
tiatives supporting palliative care, kin-
ship care for family members caring
for loved ones, guaranteeing reduced
emergency room wait times, fxing the
existing hospital system before addi-
tional money is designated and provid-
ing full staffng for hospitals and care
homes
Giving an assisted senior drug pro-
gram, diverted home tax for seniors,
programs to help seniors age in home
Help for municipalities
Listing information like expenses
Addressing the questions
and budgets online
Free votes for MLAs in the legisla-
ture
Introducing recall measures for
voter supported referendums
Setting fxed election dates
Whistleblower protection for em-
ployees and healthcare workers
Incumbent MLA Arno Doerksen
wanted voters to consider Premier Red-
fords record and his personal record
as an MLA.
Those experiences over the past four
years have given me the understanding
of how government works both local,
at the provincial and international lev-
el, said Doerksen.
Doerksen outlined the many things
that he had the privilege of working on
with constituents while being MLA for
Strathmore-Brooks area.
Some of his accomplishments during
his four-year term were:
Serving on various boards and
committees in agriculture
Chair of provincial export boards
Interacting with people locally, pro-
vincially, nationally and internationally
Working with municipal leaders to
place the water line to Strathmore, in-
stallation of lines to take waste water
to the Bow river
Getting funding for the Sagewood
Seniors Apartments and continued ef-
forts on seniors living
Supporting the modernization of
the Aquatic Centre
Helping develop leadership initia-
tives that promotes growth and invest-
ment for the future
Constituents asked questions on
property rights, resource planning and
regulation, health care, water rights
and marketing, education funding, im-
migration, workforce and employment
training, balancing the budget and
funding and governance.
Candidates both agreed and dis-
agreed on several of the issues.
The attendees offered varied opin-
ions on the discussion.
Eric Nelson had not made up his
mind and said that he usually waits un-
til he is standing in the ballot box to
make his decision. Lori Wagenar said
that the meeting was very informative
and would help her make up her mind,
even though her particular question
was not answered, others were.
Archie Hall, on the other hand, wore
his decision on his jacket. He wore a
PC supporter button.
There is no question who I will vote
for, said Hall, a long-standing PC sup-
porter.
Strathmore/Brooks
area voters wait for
Arno Doerksen, Pro-
gressive Conservative
candidate (back left)
and Jason Hale rep-
resenting the Wildrose
Party to answers their
pressing questions
about the provincial
election. The forum
was held in the Strath-
more Civic Centre on
April 10.

Letters to the editor
To the Editor
To the editor and residents of Strath-
more/Brooks
There has been much discussion re-
garding the pay MLAs received for the all-
party committee that did not meet. I want
to let you know that I returned the money
($39,000) to the Alberta Government on
March 30, 2012. There is nothing more
important to me than my personal integ-
rity and the trust you have placed in me
to represent you and your families. It is
my sincere hope that this clears questions
you may have regarding this matter and
if you would like to speak to me directly
about this or anything else, please feel
free to contact me at the number below.

Strathmore/Brooks MLA

Returning the funds
To the Editor
Look at the Wheat Board from a busi-
ness point of view. If I am a grain buy-
er and want Canadian wheat, I want to
source my grain from many different
sellers so I can manipulate the market to
my own advantage, playing one seller off
against another until I get my price.
I dont want to have to deal with a mo-
nopoly that can tell me what I have to
pay for the guaranteed grade and quality
of Canadian wheat that my marketplace
wants. Look at the Wheat Board from a
business point of view. If I am a grain
buyer and want Canadian wheat, I want
to source my grain from many different
sellers so I can manipulate the market to
my own advantage, playing one seller off
against another until I get my price.
I dont want to have to deal with a mo-
nopoly that can tell me what I have to
pay for the guaranteed grade and quality
of Canadian wheat that my marketplace
wants.
A New York hedge fund, Pershing
Square Capital Management LP, recently
revealed that it had taken a 12.2 per cent
stake in CP Rail. In a recent column in Ma-
cleans magazine, Chris Sorenson says that
it is doubtful that Pershing decided to in-
vest $1 billion of its investors money, just
to sit quietly in the passenger seat, while
CP executives continue to drive the train.
Quoting from Sorensons article, James
Nolan, an associate professor of agricul-
tural economics at the University of Sas-
katchewan, says Pershing could also be
positioning itself to take advantage of Ot-
tawas proposed dismantling of the Cana-
dian Wheat Boards monopoly over grain
marketing. He says the move to a free
market system could also signal the end
of Ottawas caps on the total amount of
revenue CN and CP are allowed to gen-
erate by hauling grains regulated by the
wheat board. Grain accounted for about
$1.1 billion of CPs nearly $5 billion in
2010 sales, about half of which was reg-
ulated grain. Based on the U.S. market,
Nolan predicted freight rate increases of
anywhere from 25% to 50% if the caps
are ultimately removed. Thats a chunk of
change, he says.
So, what are we to make of this devel-
opment?
Does anybody think a New York-based
hedge fund cares about you or your com-
munity?
Does anybody have any doubt that the
caps will be lifted by the Harper govern-
ment once that avenue is open?
Once the caps are lifted, does anybody
expect that freight rates wont go up?
Does anybody have any doubt as to
who among us Canadians will be paying
for the freight rate increases?
At that point, farmers will be wish-
ing they had an organization where they
could get together and gain some market
power back, to face the conglomerates to-
gether.
Sorrythe CWB or Conservative Wheat
Board will no longer be an advocate for
you.
I guess we are well and truly hooped.
In Stephen we trust???

Letters to the editor
To the Editor
I got excited on March 26 after hearing that
Premier Allison Redford had dropped the writ
calling for a provincial election. Since then Ive
realized that only one political party has formed
the provincial government for as long as I have
been able to vote in provincial elections. It is the
latest of four political dynasties that have ruled
the province since its creation on Sept. 1, 1905
and has the longest tenure of over 41 years.
Prior to Canada becoming a confederation, vot-
ing was a privilege reserved for a group of select
men (primarily individuals who owned property
or assets of a specifed value or paid a certain
amount in rent and taxes). In 1867 through the
enactment of the British North American Act the
exclusion of women from the vote became law.
The Suffragist Movement at the turn of the cen-
tury led to Alberta women gaining the right to
vote in 1916. Women in Quebec did not receive
the same rights until 1940.
The 1920 Dominion Elections Act contained
a clause that allowed the disenfranchisement of
individuals for reasons of race.
Public opinion shifted after 500 Chinese-Ca-
nadians fought overseas for Canada, resulting in
Chinese-Canadians and Indi-Canadians obtain-
ing the right to vote in 1947. In 1948, this right
was extended to Japanese-Canadians. Some re-
ligious groups (Mennonites and Doukabours
who because of their beliefs refusing military
service) and Canadas Aboriginal population
were still unable to vote. Final restrictions on
religious grounds were lifted in 1955. Aborigi-
nals received the right to vote at Confederation
(1867); however, had to give up their status and
treaty rights in order to do so. Through the work
of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker status Indi-
ans obtained the vote in 1960.
From the beginning voting age was 21 years of
age; however, with many 18 year olds serving in
the Second World War, a movement developed in
the mid 40s to see the voting age dropped with
appeals to bring the fresh ideas of the younger
generation to the table. For over 20 years this
remained a contentious issue and change didnt
occur until 1970 under the Trudeau government.
I voted for the frst time during Albertas 1971
election, a landmark occasion in my life that saw
me researching the options and thrilled about
the opportunity to have a voice in the future
direction of my home province. I remember the
discussions at the table with my family and how
I voted. I saw the Progressive Conservative he-
gemony established and it is all that Gen X and
Gen Y Albertans have known.
Research shows that Alberta voter participa-
tion was 71.9 per cent in 1971 and dropped to
40.6 per cent in 2008. Numerous articles abound
pertaining to the reasons for voter apathy and a
clear picture of Albertas graying voter populace
emerges. During a recent visit to a local candi-
dates campaign offce, I saw only one individual
less than 30 years of age present.
Several people have indicated that they would
like to vote None of the Above or have talked
about how to ruin their ballots. Writing this ar-
ticle I learned that another option exists De-
clining Your Ballot (Election Act Sec.107). This
option is only available in Alberta, Manitoba and
Ontario. Declined ballots are collected as a sepa-
rate category in these provinces whereas other
provinces include them in the spoiled ballot
category. In 2008, 303 Albertans used this meth-
od to indicate that they were not pleased with
the alternatives provided.
During a recent trip to Jamaica I discussed
upcoming regional by-elections with a number
of people. My favourite comment was from a
young man who indicated that it was important
for them to be involved because this is our fu-
ture.
On April 23rd Albertans vote. The demograph-
ics have changed signifcantly since 1905 due
to the struggles and efforts of many individuals
who believed voting was more than a privilege
it was a right. Exercise your right it is your
future that is being decided.
Regards,
Marcy Field

The Standard Lions Club cel-
ebrated their 50th Anniversary in
style at the community hall along
with Rockyford, Hussar, Rosebud
and Strathmore Lions members in
attendance for their annual com-
bination Charter night on April
13.
The Standard Community Hall
was packed with local dignitar-
ies, special guests, Lions mem-
bers and their wives from all over
East Wheatland, to not only come
together for their annual Charter
Night, but also to recognize the
Standard Clubs 50 years of ser-
vice. The Lions motto We Serve
was well demonstrated over the
development of the evening.
The evening was called to or-
der, and special guests were
recognized for this once in a
lifetime celebration by local Stan-
dard Lions Club President David
Nielsen. A prestigious group of
individuals at the head table were
recognized for those gathered at
the event.
The guest speaker of the eve-
ning was introduced frst, District
Governor Dr. Rose Geonzon and
her husband Roger from Calgary,
First Vice District Governor Bruce
Bishop and his wife Betty, Sec-
ond Vice District Governor Bill
Baux and his wife Donna and lo-
cal President David Nielsen and
his wife Marlis were honored.
After a wonderful meal ca-
tered by Pat Murphy from Rose-
bud, the evening continued with
some toasts. Harvey Larsen gave
a wonderful tribute to the wives
of all the members who stand by
their husbands as they serve their
communities in the worlds larg-
est service club organization.
Our 46,000 clubs and 1.35 mil-
lion members make us the worlds
largest service club organization.
Were also one of the most effec-
tive. Our members do whatever is
needed to help their local com-
munities. Everywhere we work,
we make friends. With children
who need eyeglasses, with se-
niors who dont have enough
to eat and with people we may
never meet, says the Lions Club
International Organization.
The Standard Lions Club has
one of the largest groups in the
area with 42 active members.
Four Charter members were rec-
ognized with long time service
awards for attendance in the or-
ganization who included Lyle En-
voldsen, Vern Hoff, Elmer Jensen
and Marshall Bye who received a
charter member pin. These gen-
tlemen were four of the 20 who
helped start the Standard Club on
April 4, 1962 and now the Club
has more than doubled in size.
Throughout the decades the
Standard Club held many suc-
cessful projects in and around
the community. To summarize
the last ffty years would not do
it justice, but rather to highlight
a few would give a clear picture
of the hard work and dedica-
tion that comes from not only a
service club, but defnitely rural
hard work ethic and integrity. In
the beginning fundraising events
were held such as a traveling
minstrel show that would only
net $200 with a membership of
21. Now the annual Stag Auction
held every year in Standard brings
in around $90,000 - $100,000 in
one night. The members have
participated in building projects
in the community like the arena,
library, community hall, commu-
nity playground and many helps
to our local school.
The banquet part of the eve-
ning ended after guest speak-
er District Governor Dr. Rose
Geonzon addressed the group
and some presentations to mark
the occasion were made. Local
President of the Rockyford Lions
Club Darcy Koester presented
the Standard Club with a brass
bell with the 50th Anniversary
inscription on it. Local Presi-
dent David Nielsen presented
President of the Community
Hall Board Brent Gregory with
a cheque for $500,000 for the
new Hall. Nielsen also presented
a $20,000 cheque to a represen-
tative of the Standard School
playground committee, Jolayne
Christensen. Lion Mike Rasmus-
sen along with District Governor
Geonzon presented the presti-
gious Melvin Jones service award
to local Lion Brett Gates.
The evening concluded with
entertainment from Yuk Yuks co-
median Sean Lecomber from Ed-
monton.
It was evident from the celebra-
tion that the truth in the motto
of the Lions We Serve was made
very clear. Whenever a Lions
club gets together, problems get
smaller. And communities get
better. Thats because we help
where help is needed in our
own communities and around the
world with unmatched integrity
and energy, according to the Li-
ons Club Organization.

After trying to fnd the perfect real
looking doll for her niece, Patricia
Straub found a new passion for herself.
Straub runs a day home, and has al-
ways had a passion for children and art.
In November of 2011 Straub and her
sister were looking on eBay to fnd
a doll for Straubs 12-year-old niece.
Through their search the women found
out about the world of reborn dolls,
which are vinyl dolls created to resem-
ble a real human baby as much as pos-
sible. They also found that kits could be
purchased to create their own reborn
dolls.
By December I said, thats it, Im go-
ing to get my frst kit. Ive been hooked
ever since, said Straub.
It takes me on average about three
weeks right now to make a baby, be-
cause of course I can only paint on
weekends and work (on them) in the
evenings.
Straub had a strong interest in art
all through school, and does arts and
crafts with the kids she watches. For
her it was a natural transition for her to
combine her love of children and art by
creating her reborn babies.
With every one theyre just getting
so much better. My frst one, I cringe
at it now, my daughter still loves it, my
oldest has that one, said Straub who
is currently working on her ffth baby.
She has also started her own com-
pany, Alberta Born Babies with the
hope of creating realistic, playable dolls
for the older child. With each doll she
plans to add a little touch of Alberta to
them.
All of my babies I want to make a
quilt that has on the one side some Al-
berta theme like horses or something.
Theres collectors all over the world so
I would love to see my dolls...I would
love to see that they go all over, and
to help promote Alberta as well, said
Straub.
I think its exciting because Im an
Alberta girl.
The frst doll she sent away, Allison
Nicole, was sent to a girl in West Vir-
ginia. It was sent with a certifcate
of authenticity saying it is an Alberta
Reborn Baby, with Straubs signature
and what number of doll it is. Allison
was a custom order, and was sent with
a handmade quilt, diapers, clothes, a
magnetic soother, and hospital brace-
let. Each baby also has a baby powder
scent that can go into the torso to give
it the newborn smell. There are voice
recorders which are optional but again
add to the realistic affect the artists are
going for.
Some people they go all into it and
its their real babies. To me its still a
dollits not a real baby, but you do
want to make them as real as you can,
said Straub.
After doing some research into re-
born dolls Straub found often people
who cant have children will collect
them, or people who have lost a child
may ask for a custom recreation. Straub
would like to challenge doing recre-
ations in the future, and said she plans
to take her own childrens images and
try to recreate.
In the beginning she didnt tell any-
one about creating the dolls, but after
accidently posting a picture of the one
she sent to the girl in Virginia she found
she had a lot of support.
It is a world where some people
think its awesome and other people
think youre crazy and its kind of
creepy. I think its cool, if I was a kid
I would have loved a doll that looks
more real, said Straub.
Its just an art form, its just like
painting, its just an art form, and to me
thats what I love about it, youre build-
ing and creating. Its taking that ordi-
nary doll and making it come to life, or
making it not so ordinary.
Straubs goal for now is to begin sell-
ing her babies, and work on building a
name for herself in the reborn world.
She is planning to enter her latest com-
pleted doll, Takota Michael in the Heri-
tage Days Horticulture and Creative
Arts show, and in the Creative Arts and
Crafts show at the Calgary Stampede.
To fnd out more about Straub and
her dolls either go to Alberta Born Ba-
bies, reborn dolls on Facebook, or visit
the website at http://albertabornba-
bies.weebly.com
Patricia Straub recently began
creating reborn dolls. Allison Ni-
cole, the doll shown was sent to
a girl in West Virginia.

get into mischief!
Every Saturday they went into
Glasgow on the tramcar, which was
known as a shooglie, because it shook
so much. This was later replaced by
double decker buses. She remembers
going to a multi-foor depart-
ment store called Lewiss, in
the centre of Glasgow. It had
an elevator with a male op-
erator, who would announce
the different items for each
foor.
On the ffth foor, ladies
could have their hair permed
at the hairdressers, but in
those days the chemical used
smelled like rotten eggs! And, on the
top foor there was a tea room, which
sold cream buns, scones, tea and lem-
onade!
Peter died in December 1958, at the
age of 51. He enjoyed playing in the
Salvation Army Band, and growing
enough vegetables in his garden plot
for his family, friends and neighbours.
Their son, Angus, emigrated to Ed-
monton in 1964, where he met and
then married Chris, and this marriage
has produced two daughters and two
grand-daughters.
Lillian married Hugh Driver in 1963,
and they emigrated to Can-
ada in 1976. They have two
children, fve grandchildren
and one great-grandson.
As time went by, Jessie
outlived all members of her
immediate family and close
friends, so in 1986 at the age
of 76, she moved to Western
Canada to be near her son
and daughter. She lived with
Lillian and Hugh until 2011, when she
moved into Wheatland Lodge, where
she continues to live in comfort, thanks
to the staff who take care of her every
need. She still has an active life and her
favourite activities are sing along con-
certs and the ice cream socials.
Happy 102nd birthday Jessie, and
many more.

Happy birthday to you, happy birth-
day to you, and many more.
Jessie Campbell was born in
Glasgow, Scotland on April 17, 1910,
which made her 102 years old earlier
this week. She had two brothers John
and Jimmy. Her father died the same
year she was born, while trying to save
the life of his apprentice steeplejack.
Her mother died when Jessie was 10
years old, leaving her brothers to look
after her.
Jessie left school at age 13 to become
a tailor, making suits for gentlemen. She
married Peter Campbell in 1930, and
they had two children a son, Angus,
born in 1940, who lives in Calgary, and
a daughter, Lillian, who lives in Strath-
more. After their marriage they moved
to Renfrew, now a suburb of Glasgow,
and joined the Salvation Army so that
Peter could play with their band. Peter
became an insurance agent for the Sal-
vation Army.
Jessie has wonderful memories of
the old days growing up in Scotland,
when there was no TV, no cars, and no
telephones. For entertainment they re-
ally enjoyed singing, and were blessed
with having a piano and two organs in
their living room. They joined the Bap-
tist Church in Renfrew, and their week
revolved around the church or the
Salvation Army. Tuesday evening was
Christian Endeavour, Friday was Band
of Hope, Sundays included services in
the morning and evening, and Sunday
School in the afternoon.

Surprise visit
Sharon McLeay

MP Kevin Sorenson
dropped in on the Wheat-
land Council meeting to
update councillors on news
from parliament hill on
April 17.
He said to watch for new
announcements that will af-
fect municipalities.
We always desire to work
closely with the province
and municipalities on is-
sues, said Sorenson.
He indicated that he was
a little disappointed that
government had not taken
stronger measures to reduce
the budget defcit sooner.
Hearing from the constitu-
ents, he said they indicated
a desire for short to mid-
term solutions. The defcit
reductions will be fve to10
per cent and completed by
2015.
I was one of the MPs to
push for a balanced bud-
get, said Sorenson.
On the topic of money, So-
renson said there had been
a lot of response to discon-
tinue pennies. He pointed
out that to make a penny, it
costs 1.6 cents and there is
an estimate of 158,000 un-
circulated coins kept in jars
across the country. The col-
lectors can still redeem the
coins for their 1-cent value,
but no new pennies will
be minted. Many collectors
hope the coins will increase
in their numismatic value.
Last January, a 1936 dot
penny sold for $402,000.
The government is look-
ing at new environmental
review guidelines. He said
the government will still
maintain a focus on envi-
ronmental protection, but
they would like to see one
review per project. Current-
ly multiple reviews are ham-
pering the ability of projects
to move forward. Environ-
mental policies are still in
place and issues surround-
ing water and transporta-
tion will remain a priority.
Multiple reviews slow ev-
erything up, said Sorenson.
It is a huge issue.
On the agriculture front,
the government is working
with the larger grain com-
panies and the new wheat
board to offer farmers a
choice as to how they mar-
ket their grain. They are
working hard to ensure that
it is an individual choice
and that no one should feel
that they are being pushed
into a program they cant
use.
Sorenson has received
positive feedback about
scrapping the gun registry,
which freed approximate-
ly two billion dollars. He
wanted to reassure people
that the licensing program
is still in place. There is also
a registry which lists crimi-
nals with weapon offences
to ensure guns are not li-
censed to previous offend-
ers. He did not elaborate on
any measures dealing with
illegal gun ownership.
Councillor Alice Booth
suggested a sponsorship
program be implemented
for immigrants contem-
plating work in Canada,
whereby they would have
a job promised before they
entered the country. She
congratulated Sorenson on
the governments efforts to
reform the immigration process. So-
renson said in the past immigration
matters were not as time consuming
as they are now. With the western
provinces economies booming, the
need for workers has become a hot
issue. Consultation is done with other
countries to coordinate training and
accreditation standards, so that pro-
fessionals and tradesmen can enter
Canadian jobs more quickly.
The question is how we are going
to assess our standards and coordinate
those standards with other countries,
said Sorenson.
The councillors wanted more infor-
mation on the purchase of the F-35
fghter jets. Sorenson said there had
been confusion over the pricing of the
jets and that communication had been
poor. He said the increased prices,
stated by the auditor generals report,
included maintenance and operation
of the jets over their lifetime.
When we buy a car, we usually
dont include that in our purchase
price, said Sorenson.
The jets were to replace the current
F-18 jets that are nearing the end of
their use. Rather than paying dollars
to refurbish old jets, Sorenson said
that consultations with other coun-
tries would ft into a collaborative ef-
fort to save money. The concept was
that countries could share resources,
such as mechanics and parts. It was
hoped it would show positive savings,
if the F-35s were purchased.
We are taking what the auditor gen-
eral said seriously and we are trying
to comply with that, said Sorenson.
Sorenson thanked the councillors
for their correspondence and said he
makes an effort to review all emails
and letters sent to his offce. He en-
couraged people to continue writing
him about their concerns.
Locate the gravel
Sharon McLeay
Times Contributor
Councillor Don Vander Velde ques-
tioned why gravel for the Carseland
Fire Hall had not been delivered. He
said it had already been delayed a
year. Councillors moved that the coun-
ty will purchase and deliver the gravel
expediently and the bill for the gravel
forwarded to the Brooks contractor.
FENCING PROPOSAL
Staff opened three tenders for the
2012-2014 County fencing contracts in
council. The three applicants were Rat-
teray Reclamation, DENCO and McKay
Fencing. The companys proposals
were evaluated on 20 items of criteria
and a recommendation was made to
council. The contract was awarded to
DENCO.
TAX BACK
A ratepayer inadvertently paid dou-
ble property tax. Their mortgage com-
pany already paid taxes, so Council
voted to give the extra tax back to the
owner.
RAISE EXPLANATION
Wheatland County Housing Body re-
plied to Councils inquiry about raised
fees. The Body has incurred increased
costs that average about $8.91 per per-
son. The increases were due to wage
increases, lost revenue from increased
vacancy rates and uncertainty about
forthcoming grant money.

for Mom with her students. Zulyniak
frst gave the project a try after another
teacher she knew had mentioned it
several years ago. Now it has become a
joint project between the kindergarten
classes.
Our three kindergarten classes are
doing it as their specifc good works
project but of course any families in
the school would be welcome to do-
nate items as well if theyre interested,
said Zulyniak.
Throughout the month of April the
kindergarten students, and staff, have
been collecting items to be donated
to the Louise Dean Centre in Calgary.
Louise Dean is a school that is affli-
ated with Catholic Family Services, and
is for pregnant and parenting teens.
One of the services includes childcare
while the mother is in class.
Students and their families are in-
vited to donate a variety of items for
the babies and then, if they are also in-
terested, they can include a few things
for mom, said Zulyniak.
Anything from diapers, to clothing,
to formula and baby food is more than
welcome as donations. Zulyniak said
in the past Bibles, candles, books, and
gift certifcates for a haircut have been
donated for the mothers. The items do-
nated can either be new, or some gen-
tly used items are also accepted.
We bag the items and in the past
weve been very lucky to have the di-
rector of the Louise Dean Centre come
out. She gives a little presentation to
the students, talks about what they
do at their school and then she brings
them pictures of the moms and the ba-
bies, said Zulyniak.
So it becomes quite personal for the
kids to get to see where their dona-
tions will be going. Then we help her
load up all the bags to take back to the
Louise Dean Centre in Calgary.
Every grade in the school has spe-
cifc good works. Many of the projects
include raising funds for charities, or
those less fortunate. Some of the proj-
ects include the students volunteering
to cleanup the schoolyard, or with the
recycling, or even create art projects to
donate.
Anyone wishing to donate to the
Baby Bags for Moms project is invit-
ed to drop their items off at the main
offce. Items are being collected until
April 27.

The haunting play, She Has A Name, which
brings to light the plight of human traffcking, is
returning for a 12-city tour. Last year the produc-
tion, which was written by Andrew Kooman, sold
out quickly in every city it played.
We felt like we needed to tell this story in as
many different cities across Canada as we could,
said Director Stephen Wald-
schmidt.
The audience response and the
response from news media and
theatre critics was such that we
think the play has something to
offer to Canada, in terms of how
Canada is responding to human
traffcking and maybe moving Ca-
nadians, and our government, and
our culture to address the reality of
traffcking both here and abroad in
a more active way.
The play follows Number 18,
a 15-year-old prostitute who has
been forced into working in a
brothel, and Canadian lawyer Ja-
son. Jason is building a case against
a ring of brothels traffcking young
girls in Bangkok, and Number 18
must risk her life to testify for him.
Andrew Kooman wont be travel-
ing with the tour, said Waldschmidt, though he
will be out to the talkback panel discussions after
the Saturday matinee in every city. Waldschmidt
said the plan is to try to arrange a talkback with
someone who is working locally against traffck-
ing in each city, as well as with someone from a
national perspective. Member of Parliament Joy
Smith is going to be part of the talk back in Win-
nipeg and Ottawa.
Its a powerful piece of theatre. Its a thrilling,
kind of gripping, suspenseful story so if youre
looking for a good night out and kind of an ac-
tion packed theatre experience thats one reason
to come, said Waldschmidt.
Another reason, said Waldschmidt, is if youve
heard of human traffcking and know it concerns
you but you dont really know much about it.
Besides attending a panel discussion after a Sat-
urday matinee, there is also an informative aspect
to the show itself. It will leave people with at
least a little bit better understanding of human
traffcking. Waldschmidt thinks in some sense
patrons may be inspired to take ac-
tion in their own life to be an abo-
litionist.
The play is in Bangkok in Thai-
land and there are, of course, these
places where sex tourism is an in-
dustry. I think as human beings
we have a responsibility to make
ourselves aware about the great
injustices that are occurring in our
generation, and I think this is one
that is growing, yet at the same
time theres a growing movement
to stop it, said Waldschmidt.
Seeing this play I think will help
people engage with the injustice of
human traffcking, not because of
the statistics or that sort of thing
that tends to be kind of paralyzing
but because they will have in some
sense lived vicariously through the
experience of Number 18 and Jason trying to
rescue her. I think their emotional connection to
those characters will evoke more of a human and
individual response from them rather than read-
ing about the issue and signing a petition. I think
its more something that needs to get under our
skin and bug us until we bring an end to it.
The show will be playing on stages in cities
including Lethbridge, Red Deer, Edmonton and
Calgary. Information about show dates and times
can be found at shehasaname.net.

A Toy Swap and Sale was held at Westmount elementary School on April 14. All proceeds from the
sale were donated to Jaime Fairbairn who is running for Team in Training. The funds are then donated
to the Leukemia and Blood Cancers Society of Canada. Just under $800 was raised which helped
push Jaime over her minimum fundraising goal of $4,000 to participate in the race.

The UFA Bisons offcially capped
off the 2011-2012 season when they
hosted their annual awards banquet on
April 10 at the Strathmore Civic Centre.
In a season of ups and downs, high-
lighted by a trip to the Macs Midget
Hockey Tournament Championship
game, the Bisons looked back on the
campaign as a success.
Its nice to bring everyone back and
celebrate the year its great to cel-
ebrate a successful season, said head
coach Jeremy Friesen. We had a tale
of two seasons; we did a lot of prepa-
ration to gear up for the Macs as one
of critical points in the season. We did
a great job there and had a successful
run and learned a lot about our hockey
club.
After that, we never really got back
on track or back to the level we were
capable of playing it was no fault of
the players, I dont think you can ever
question their work ethic or (will to
win).
It was a (good) learning season.
Langdon native Devon Westby was
the big winner of the evening, captur-
ing the Most Improved and the Dedi-
cation, Perseverance & Sportsmanship
awards. The hard-working forward also
took home the Ron Ebbesson Memorial
Scholarship.
It caught me off guard to be totally
honest, said Westby of the awards. I
didnt expect any and I came (here) to
cheer on everybody else, but to clean
up is not a bad deal for me.
It was really special playing for the
Bisons.
According to Friesen, Westby made
tremendous strides during the season.
He was a guy who was on the bub-
ble at camp, but we took a leap of faith
on him because he brought those in-
tangibles, said the coach. His skill set
started a little below and we kind of
forecasted him to catch right back up
because he works so hard and thats
exactly what he did. By the end of the
year, he was playing in every situation,
whether it be on the power play or
penalty kill.
It was a great success story.
Meanwhile, goaltender and local
product Wilson Sproule took home the
prestigious Most Valuable Player award
for his efforts this past season.
It was an honour, said Sproule of
his MVP selection. It was a great ex-
perience playing for the UFA Bisons. It
was a great group of guys, we had fun
and it was a great year.
According to Sproule, who also took
home the MVP of the Macs Midget
Hockey Tournament, the season was a
success.
He was our dominant, most consis-
tent player game in game out all year,
said Friesen of his goaltender. At the
end of the day, he is a special kid who
has a very bright future ahead of him,
whether its school or hockey, he is go-
ing to be very successful.
Mitch McAllister was also honoured
as the Leading Scorer and the Hardest
Working Bison, while Tyler Wong was
named the Rookie of the Year. Lenny
Hackman was named the Top Defence-
man and Dale Nerland won the Albert
Midget Hockey League Scholarship.

Rugby season is once again upon
us, and Strathmore High Schools
(SHS) teams have been busy prepar-
ing for their upcoming games. The
girls fnished in seventh place at
provincials last year, and are trying
to qualify again this year, said coach
Jerry Flaws.
Last year at the start of the year
there was only one player who had
15s experience. A 15s team means
they play with 15 players per team
on the feld (pitch). The girls needed
to borrow players from two other
schools. This year Flaws would like
to feld a team exclusively with SHS
students.
With six returning players and
crop of good athletes out of Grade
10 the future looks good, said
Flaws.
There are only a few Grade 12s
this year so we basically have two
years to develop these athletes into
rugby players. Ive recruited good
athletes, now I just have to teach
them the sport of rugby. With rook-
ies in key positions Tuesdays game
looks to be an eye opener for the
players.
Flaws said the game is hard to
understand until you have played a
game. After the frst game he feels
the girls will have a better idea of
what they are trying to accomplish
in practice.
With the athletic talent we have
we will be competitive in league and
our zone this year, said Flaws.
The boys team has more returning
players this year than the girls, so
they are starting the year with a lit-
tle more rugby knowledge. The boys
also plan to be competitive again in
both league and game play.
A tough schedule laid out for
the boys this year should help pre-
pare them for zones. They will play
against the top three teams in the
province during league play. Coach-
es Steele and Popel will be looking
at the returning players to help lead
the squad on and off the feld.
Both teams play their frst games
at home, before going on the road
for the next three. The frst game is
April 24 with the boys playing at 5
p.m. followed by the girls at 6:30
p.m. On April 26 the teams will play
again, with the girls playing the frst
game at 5 p.m. and the boys team
playing after them.

CHATELAIN,
Fredrick
December 16, 1928
April 7, 2012
It is with great sadness that
the family of Fred Chatelain announce his
passing. After a long and healthy 83 years,
Dad fought a brief but courageous battle with
Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. He passed away
at home with his family by his side. Born in
High River, Dad spent most of his working life
in Calgary before retiring to Strathmore. All
through his retirement years and right up to
the end, Dad enjoyed his passion for golf and
was a long time member of the Strathmore
Golf Club. Besides golf, Dad loved to spend
time with family and friends, including four
legged ones. Many special family times
took place at our special River camp. Dad
was predeceased in 2007 by his loving wife
of 54 years Delphine. He is survived by his
children Pat (Mark), Barry (Sandra), Judy
(Greg), and Janice (Jay); grandchildren
Carey, Lindsey, Tracy, Nathan and Colby; his
two older sisters, Rita Belway (Calgary) and
Ruth Hall (Castlegar). A special thanks to
Alberta Health Home Care nurses Jacqueline
Harris and Leanne Macinnis who were of
great help and support in keeping Dad at
home and comfortable in his fnal days. A
funeral service will be held on Friday, April
20, 2012 at Lord Of All Lutheran Church,
Strathmore at 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire,
tributes may be made directly to the Alberta
Cancer Foundation (1331-29 St. N.W.,

After compiling a 14-11-
9 record and a berth in the
Macs Midget Hockey Tour-
nament championship game,
Jeremy Friesen will remain as
the head coach for the UFA
Bisons this upcoming season.
The local triple-A midget
club made the announcement
late last week, days after the
annual awards banquet.
One of the biggest things
that Jeremy brings to the
Bisons organization is hes
young and a great hockey
mind, said Bisons General
Manager Wayne Hansen. He
thinks that game well, he un-
derstands the game and he
relates well to kids at this lev-
el. He has their respect and
he treats them with respect.
He has the ability to get
the most out of them.
Friesen, who joined the Bi-
sons as an assistant coach a
couple of seasons ago, will
enter his second year as the
teams bench boss.
According to Hansen, Fri-
esen was groomed for the
job a few years back under
the tutelage of former coach
Parry Shockey.
Despite the ups and downs
this season, it was a learning
year for the Bisons organiza-
tion, including the coach.
This was a learning year
for Jeremy. Hell probably
be the frst one to tell you
he made some mistakes this
year, but Jeremy is the type
of coach that will learn from
those mistakes, move on and
just get better, said Hansen.
We are thrilled to have him
as our head coach.
According to Friesen, the
Bisons are a frst class orga-
nization and he is thrilled to
be the clubs head coach.
Ive been part of a couple
of other (organizations) and
its not even close (to the
UFA), said Friesen. To be
part of this is special they
treat you very well and they
give you everything you
need to be successful. There
is a great support structure
in place to give the guys ev-
erything they need to grow
and develop. At the end of
the day, thats why Im here
too. I wouldnt want to be
anywhere else.

hours notice prior to your planned irrigation start
up, and 24 hours notice before shutting the water
off. In addition, it is also important to inform us
when you are shut down due to maintenance re-
quirements or for any other unplanned reasons.
This enables us to effciently add or remove water
from our canals which allows us to provide the
users with the best possible service while manag-
ing the water more effciently. Please call to order
your water on and off. Your cooperation is greatly
appreciated.
