Prayer

Lord, thank you for the amazing example you set as you lived on
earth. We need your grace and your Spirit to continue the work of
being Christ to one another and to a needy world. Please help us to
love as you loved, forgive as you forgave, and serve as you served.
Amen

Do Not Judge

37 “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you
shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give,
and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken
together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the
same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
39 And He spoke a parable to them: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will
they not both fall into the ditch? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher,
but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 And
why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not
perceive the plank in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your
brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when
you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite!
First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see
clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

Background:

Jesus’ pattern of withdrawing to a place of solitude for prayer, central

throughout his ministry, now prepares him for the selection of twelve
apostles from among his many disciples.

The first major portion of Jesus’ teaching in Luke begins with the
Sermon on the Plain (6:17-49). Like Moses descending from Mount
Sinai with the law of God, here Jesus comes down from the mountain
where he has been praying and stands on a level place to teach.

A crowd surrounds him, for people have come from great distances.
News of Jesus has already spread dramatically; people come to hear
and be healed, and they are not disappointed. Notably Luke does not
separate the people’s need to hear and to be healed. To hear Jesus is
to be healed.

Opening:

How does the expression “What goes around, comes around” apply in
personal relationships? When have you criticized someone for an
action that you were also guilty of?

Explore:

1) What specific promises did Jesus make?

2) What does God give to those who give?

3) What is the main point of the parable of the plank and the
sawdust?

Connect:

1) When is it easy to judge others?

2) What do judging, condemning, forgiving and giving have in

common?

3) In what relationship in your life do you want to show more

grace, mercy and giving? How?

Prayer

Thank you for shining your light into our hearts, giving us hope,
salvation, a clear conscience, and power to live aright for you. Let
your light shine through us into others’ hearts, that they may find you
as their light and salvation. Amen.
