In China, the new year celebrations
coincide with the spring festival and
some of the festivities are grounded in
some golden rules that we should all
consider, no matter
the date on the
calendar.
Practice what
you preach
The ancient
Chinese wanted good
luck to shine on them.
As such, in many
aspects of their
fascinating culture,
they work to invite
good luck into their
lives.
One way that the
Chinese people invite
good luck is to speak
only positive words.
Negativity is not fashionable and neither
are curse words, particularly during the
spring when nature displays all of its
glory. Happy and positive are the buzz
words of the season.
Celebrating the spring season
In ancient Chinese homes, as in the
western world, certain objects are held in
high esteem. These objects deserve respect
and a clean environment. During the spring
festivalan event which takes place for 15
days after the date of the first new moon of
the new yearspring cleaning takes place
with vigor.
Since the Chinese people have long
believed that cleanliness invites good
fortune, homes are cleaned, swept, and
tended to all over China. However, once
the new moon appears, all of the cleaning
stops for the 15 day celebratory period.
Why stop cleaning? The Chinese people
fear that the good luck may be inadver-
tently swept away.
It follows that our western tradition of
spring cleaning derived from this ancient
tradition.
Say it with food
In the springtime, good luck signs come
in the form of foodstuffs also.
The Chinese will serve fish for many
reasons including its association with
promoting long life. Other foods are made
into certain forms that suggest good luck.
For instance, those delicious and ultra
high-calorie pork-stuffed dumplings in
which we have all indulged at our favorite
Asian restaurants are traditionally and
intentionally made in the shape of gold
ingots or gold bars.
The shape speaks volumes about their
symbolism and pre-eminence on Chinese
dinner tables.
Red is powerful
The springtime in China is an important
time of the year as people host many
guests. Gift giving is a spring time tradition
and the power color, red, is worn by young
adults in abundance.
Whether you are giving the gift of a
small red trinket or wearing red dresses,
the vibrant primary color means good luck
and has been an important color in Chinese
culture since the ancient times. Chinese
snuff bottles, decorative screens,
porcelains, and floor coverings are often
highlighted with the bold color.

With springtime weather
upon us, we can open
windows and let the sun shine
in. As breezes set curtains
fluttering, its the perfect time
to consider the way your
windows are decorated.
Dressing windows is one
of the most impactful ways to
give any space a designer
edge, says Brian Patrick
Flynn, an interior designer
and founder of
decordemon.com.
The freshest looks now,
according to Flynn and
interior designers Betsy
Burnham and Mallory
Mathison, are all about
simplicity, softness and fuss-
free design.
Simple hardware
The skinnier the rod, the
fresher the room will look,
says Burnham, founder of
Burnham Design in Los
Angeles. Just a skinny rod
with tiny rings is all you
need. Its very graceful.
When I see 2-inch and 3-inch
wooden rods and clunky rings
now, it looks so dated.
Mathison, who is based in
Atlanta, agrees: People are
moving away from window
treatments with cornices and
valances. With a basic
curtain or Roman shade, she
says, you dont need to worry
about anything collecting
dust or dirt, or kids wrapping
themselves up in bunches of
fabric.
Sheers and naturals
Mathison increasingly
prefers to use sheer curtains
on their own, rather than
pairing them with thicker
draperies.
Adding a thin, organic
cotton lining to a sheer
curtain panel adds a bit of
privacy, but keeps that sort
of flowy, gauzy look, she
says. Its a soft little frame
for the window and theres no
distraction with it being a
heavy fabric.
Only the fabric you need
A few years ago, Burnham
says, many designers favored
piling on fabric to create
dramatic windows. Today,
theres a spare approach.
Were not swagging.
Theres no puddling of fabric
on the floor anymore, she
says. Now, its best for fabric
to just kiss the floor.
The same rule goes for
Roman shades: A simple,
pleated style, not too much
fabric has become more
popular than billowing
shades.
And phony curtains are
definitely out: Dont put up
two panels that dont actual-
lyclose, Burnham advises.
Custom look for less
Its increasingly easy to
get the look of made-to-order
window treatments without
the cost. All three designers
suggest buying pre-packaged
curtain panels, then having
them custom lined and
hemmed to fit your windows.
I stick with linen and
cotton, says Flynn, then
drop them off to a seamstress
to be lined so they hang
nicely. Next, I have the tops
sewn soft top style, which is
a straight stitch that gives a
casual, relaxed look. Then
drapery hooks are added. The
cost is anywhere from $25 to
$125 per panel, depending on
the type of pleat and liner
used.
Or buy several yards of
fabric (look for sales and
online coupons for local
fabric stores) and have a
seamstress make simple
panels, rather than having
curtains done by a custom
window treatment retailer.
The difference in cost, if
you have the work done by
someone who normally
tailors clothing, is going to be
noticeable, Burnham says.
If you prefer shades to
curtains, Mathison says to
apply the same strategy: Buy
a plain white cotton Roman
shade, she says, then attach a
flat ribbon trim across the
bottom border or even a
cotton pompom fringe for a
childs room. The look is
simple and clean, and the
expense minimal, but youve
added a dash of color and
texture.
Subtle patterns
Patterns arent out of style,
but these designers suggest
deploying them strategically.
One approach is using a
pattern done all in one color.
There are a lot of sheers
now that have a subtle pattern
in them, a tone-on-tone stripe
or wavy design that addsa
little bit of interest,
Mathison says, but still
looks simple and light.
Burnham sometimes
favors that approach,
bringing in pattern through
texture rather than color:
Its nice to find a rougher
linen, just not a plain flat
cotton, she says. So you
get a little texture in your
solid color drape, and thats
adding more dimension to
your wall.
Subtler patterns work
especially well in a bedroom,
Burnham says, where its
nice to have something
calmer.
In your dining room you
can indulge your alter ego,
and go a little crazier.
Furniture also matters: In
rooms with mstly solid
decor, Flynn says, I turn o
window dressing to add
pattern.
If youre using a print,
always think of how far
away you will be from your
window treatments, he
advises. Tiny rooms like
powder rooms are ideal for
small patterns since the eye
will never be far enough
away from the pattern for it
to become busy or hard to
read.
Medium and larger
patterns give the most bang
for the buck, he says. But if
the design is very large, this
means you need way more
fabric to appreciate it. That,
he points out, will add to the
cost.

Ceilings are the Rodney Dangerfield
of homes. They get no respect.
But there are plenty of easy ways to
make over this oft-overlooked area, from
the quirky charm of Victorian-era,
pressed-tin tiles and beadboard to a
simple splash of color.
Historically, ceilings were highly
decorated, but it seems as houses have
become more modern they have been
forgotten, says San Francisco-based
interior designer Cecilie Starlin. Once
again, though, ceilings are starting to get
the attention they deserve.
Here are some suggestions from
the simple to the complex to
transform your ceilings from drab white
squares into the focal point of a room.
Ceiling medallion
Probably the easiest way to bring the
eye upward in a room is with a ceiling
medallion, a white or colored decorative
disk typically mounted around a lighting
fixture.
The pieces come in a variety of styles
and can be found in any home improve-
ment store. Another bonus? Todays
lighter polyurethane models are much
simpler to install and easier on the wallet
than those from decades past, says Alex
Bandon, online editor of Thisol-
dhouse.com.
I personally like that look in the
bedroom, she says. Its a really
unusual thing, but it makes a simple
bedroom much more romantic and
exciting.
Paint
If you have tall ceilings or want a
cozy feel, extend the wall color onto the
ceiling, or go bold and throw a darker or
contrasting color up above to make the
area appear smaller.
Color on the ceiling is not
forbidden, Bandon says. Its something
you can play around with a bit.
Go with a flat paint on ceilings to
minimize light reflection and mask
imperfections, says Puji Sherer of the
eco-paint manufacturer YOLO
Colorhouse in Portland, Ore.
Since ceilings are not in danger of
greasy fingerprints and the regular wear
and tear that walls receive, higher gloss
finishes are not necessary, she says.
Paneling
For a classic New England cottage
look, you cant beat the charm of wood
paneling such as beadboard on the
ceiling.
Amy Matthews, a contractor and host
of the DIY Networks Sweat Equity,
prefers the ease of gluing and nailing
larger beadboard sheet panels to the
ceiling rather than tacking up individual
tongue-and-groove pieces.
The panels, which can be cut with a
power or handsaw, should be nailed to
ceiling joists, and can then be stained or
painted.
Bandon likes the look in bathrooms,
where wainscoted walls are common, or
on front-porch ceilings, in a traditional
light-blue color that was thought to keep
insects away.
Pressed-tin panels
These are a popular ceiling option if
youre looking for a folksy, vintage feel,
and they also come in larger patterned-
metal sheets for easier installation,
Bandon says.
The panels can be nailed in place
with a hammer or nail gun onto furring
strips that must first be nailed up,
according to thisoldhouse.com.
Overlap the edges and seal the panels
with a clear polyurethane or paint them
with an oil-based paint.
Drop panel ceiling
Many people shudder at the thought
of a drop panel ceiling, envisioning the
white utilitarian grids and fluorescent
lighting common in 1960s basements and
office buildings.
But Matthews says todays drop
ceilings are handsomer, designed in many
more colors and textures. Several
companies even make individual panels in
materials such as wood and tin that fit
into existing metal grid systems, giving
homeowners a cheaper way to bring their
drop ceiling into the 21st century,
Matthews says.
Coffered ceiling
Originally used during the Renaissance
and popularized in the late 19th and early
20th centuries, coffered ceilings are one
of the more complex ceiling projects, but
also the most formal and dramatic.
The process involves attaching flat or
more intricately molded beams to the
ceiling to create a square, grid-like pattern
that is then typically trimmed out with
crown molding, Bandon says.
It drops your ceilings down, so use
caution in a small room, but it adds
instant classic elegance to a dining or
living room.
Its a great way to hide flaws in your
ceiling, Bandon says. Its also a great
way to hide duct work or something you
have to put in your ceiling.
Building a soffit box around the
perimeter of a ceiling also can give the
look of a layered, coffer-like ceiling, says
Ken Collier, editor-in-chief of The Family
Handyman magazine.
Install recessed lighting in the soffit
box or run downlights along the top to
make the light kind of wash along the
walls. It looks very dramatic, Collier
says.
Remember the ceiling when decorating a room
Historically, ceilings were highly decorated, but it seems as houses
have become more modern they have been forgotten. Once again,
though, ceilings are starting to get the attention they deserve.

Cracking fruit, yellowing foliage and
wilting leaves. Sound familiar? These are
just a few common challenges to growing
tomatoes, but oh the taste of those
homegrown beauties
right off the vine is so
worth going head to
head with the
challenges. Consider
these tips when
growing tomatoes.
Choose the right
location. Tomatoes
need at least six hours
of direct sunlight a
day and plenty of
good air circulation.
Do not plant them too
closely together.
Rotate your crops.
Dont grow tomatoes or related plants
like peppers and eggplant in the same
spot year after year. Many disease spores
can live in the soil for years.
Improve the soil. Tomatoes like well-
drained soil that is enriched with organic
matter like well-rotted compost.
Water correctly. Water early in the day
so plants dry before evening and give
them a deep slow watering which will
encourage good root formation. Try to
avoid getting the foliage wet as this can
lead to fungal diseases. Mulch to keep
moisture levels consistent which will
help prevent problems with blossom-end
rot and leaf curl.
Encourage beneficial insects. Lady
beetles, predatory wasps and toads are
natural predators that reduce tomato
pests. Avoid the use of pesticides in the
garden which kills the good and the bad
bugs.
Dont smoke when working with
tomato plants to avoid spreading the
tobacco mosaic virus.
Keep your garden clean. Remove and
destroy infected plants to prevent disease
from spreading to healthy plants.
Remove garden debris, leaf litter and
weeds to keep pests and pathogens away.
Sterilize garden tools in a solution made
from one part bleach to nine parts water.
Plant healthy stock. Hundreds of
tomato varieties are available, so choose
the type that will grow best in your area.
Look for healthy green leaves and stems
when purchasing a plant. Carefully check
for pests or diseased plant parts so you
dont introduce these problems into your
garden.
Tomato varieties marked with these
codes have resistance to these diseases: F
- fusarium wilt, FF - fusarium race 1 and
race 2, L - septoria leaf spot, A -
alternaria leaf spot, T - tobacco mosaic
virus, V - verticillium wilt and N -
nematodes.

Those who are new to the housing
market are usually confronted with a ton
of terminology that may not make much
sense. One of
the key ingredi-
ents to working
out your home
loan (if you go
the loan route)
is learning
which type of
mortgage is
right for you
a fifteen-year
mortgage or a
30-year
mortgage.
On the
surface, the
differences are quite obvious. A 15-year
mortgage will come with a higher
monthly payment, but with less interest.
A 30-year mortgage, on the other hand,
will have lower monthly payments but
comes with more interest to be paid.
Because of the difference in interest,
buyers typically end up spending more
for their home when they go with a 30-
year mortgage. But at the time of
purchase, a 30-year mortgage is often
the only way a buyer can buy a home.
There is, however, what is known as
wiggle room. This occurs when
someone gets a 30- year mortgage with
the intention of paying it off within 15
years (or thereabouts). This provides
them with a lower monthly payment,
allowing them to save up and pay extra
on each months payment.
If youre trying to decide which
mortgage is right for you, consider these
basic questions:
What can you currently afford?
How will each mortgage affect your
taxes?
Are you disciplined enough to go
with a 15-year mortgage?
As long as you use common sense
and have a good understanding of your
personal finances, determining which
mortgage best suits you should be one
of the easier decisions youll make
during the home-buying process.
