Profit Controller
Multivariable Control and Local Optimization Technology
Profit Controller software allows the easy implementation of multivariable control and optimization strategies in industrial plants. The product safely controls complex and highly interactive industrial processes while operating in the most economic and robust manner. Using Honeywell's patented Robust Multivariable Predictive Control Technology (RMPCT), the comprehensive software package provides all of the necessary tools to design, implement, and maintain multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) applications. State-of-the-art control technology provides superior control and optimization performance compared with other multivariable control technologies. In addition, its Profit Design Studio fully integrates all aspects of controller design and implementation into a proven, easy-to-use, Windows-based environment.

HOW DOES PROFIT CONTROLLER HELP ME?

Key Features and Functions
Profit Controller's patented technology generates controller applications that are inherently more robust and offers a number of innovative features that yield better control performance and higher application uptime with less application maintenance. Range Control Algorithm (RCA) is a key Profit Controller advantage. This patented control algorithm minimizes the effects of model uncertainty while determining the smallest process moves required to simultaneously meet both control and optimization objectives. Its innovative feature of managing dynamic control moves through "funnels" rather than via specified trajectories provides the controller with additional degrees of freedom to enhance dynamic process optimization. Product Value Optimization capabilities are directly incorporated into Profit Controller. The user can configure certain variables to be maximized or minimized, and can also specify desired process values as targets that will be honored under optimization conditions. The most powerful optimization scenario, however, is the ability to enter process economics directly into the controller in terms of both manipulated and controlled variable factors that support optimization of the overall economics of the process. This last option is commonly referred to as Product Value Optimization (PVO) because it allows the controller to automatically determine the best economic operating condition of the unit based on input variables such as product prices, feed prices, and utility costs. "One-Knob" Tuning simplifies the engineering effort required to implement and maintain controllers. A single performance ratio is available for each controlled variable to adjust the desired control response independently from the other controlled variables. In addition to simplified controller tuning, Profit Controller also employs a patented technique that allows the controlled response of feedforward inputs to be tuned faster than the controlled response of feedback inputs. This allows aggressive feedforward disturbance rejection without the introduction of instabilities in controller feedback.

Model Flexibility in the overall controller structure allows control parameters, including gains and constraints, to be adjusted while the controller is on line. This powerful functionality allows easy implementation of advanced control strategies to optimally solve difficult control problems, such as changes in feed quality, changes in operating mode, process non-linearities, and the incorporation of rigorous models.

Broad Application
Profit Controller is a generalized model predictive control and optimization software package that can be applied to a wide variety of problems across industries.

Feed Maximization "How can Profit Controller maximize production rate when my process is already at a constraint?" Many times process constraints can be better managed to result in higher production rates. A tray flooding constraint in a fractionation tower is a good example. Operators typically do not have time to closely monitor the symptoms leading up to a tray flooding condition. A multivariable controller, on the other hand, monitors the process frequently, and makes small adjustments to compensate for any changes in feed rate and overall tower conditions. In general, multivariable control can increase production anywhere from 1 percent to 10 percent, based on how conservatively the process was originally operated. Product Quality Control "How can Profit Controller improve the quality of my end products?" Multivariable control typically results in a 50 percent reduction in the standard deviation of lab-measured product quality values. This improvement in product quality is derived from improved process stability, fewer process upsets, and more consistent control across operator shifts. Rigorous Optimization "We have a rigorous process model that calculates optimal process conditions. Can Profit Controller be used to implement the model's solution?" Profit Controller provides a perfect framework for implementing desired optimization objectives. In this instance, the rigorous model would be used to calculate the desired target conditions of the process in the controller objective function. The controller would then be used to move the process to the optimal resting conditions while still controlling the process within the specified constraints.

System Requirements
Profit Controller off-line design software runs under Windows 95 and Windows NT. A Pentium equivalent or higher microprocessor is recommended to accommodate the computational requirements of this application. Profit Controller on-line implementation software runs on Honeywell TPS Application Modules as well as Open NT platforms. The native Honeywell version of the software supports direct implementation on AM, AxM, and APP platforms. The Open NT version supports non-Honeywell implementations through Honeywell's Uniformance real-time database software. Please contact your Honeywell representative for the latest software release information.
