Bear Lake High School trigonometry
students put classroom work to the test

BEAR LAKE Manistee County sur-
veyor Pat Bentley often remembers sitting
at a desk in his high school trigonometry
class wondering where he would ever use
any of that material when he was in the
real world.
What he never imagined was several
years later it would be something he
would be using on a daily basis in his job
as a surveyor. When Bentley heard about
the Trig Star program several years ago
he quickly realized it would be the perfect
venue for teaching high school students
about the importance of trigonometry.
For the past eight years, Bentley has
been visiting the functions, statistics and
trigonometry class of Lavon Jonson at
Bear Lake Schools to present the Trig Star
program. It is something Jonson and the
students have met with open arms.
The Trig Star program is sponsored
by the National Society of Professional
Surveyors and has surveyors coming into
their local schools and introducing the
students to the surveying and mapping
professions, Bentley said. I came in yes-
terday, and we did an introduction on the
basics and how we use math in it. I can
remember being in a math class like that
in high school and having no clue where
I would use any of this, but I ended up
using it daily in my job.
Bentley said the second part of the
program is the one the students really
look forward to taking part in. It is the
opportunity to gain that hands-on experi-
ence.
The second day is when we have the
fun because I bring the surveying equip-
ment in, and we use it outside. They turn
some angles, take some measurements,
and we create some problems for them to
solve. They actually gather the data, and
solve the problem from the trigonometry
she is teaching them.
Another part of the program is in the
near future Bentley will return to Jonsons
classroom to administer the Trig Star test.
This is an opportunity for the students to
compete against others across the state
and nation for cash prizes.
It is a one-hour universal exam that is
given all over the state, Bentley said. At
a small school like Bear Lake they have
between eight and 15 kids that are going
against some big schools that may have a
couple hundred kids taking part in it.
Jonson pointed out that Bentleys
visits are a perfect way to drive home the
importance of trigonometry beyond the
classroom.
It gives them a taste of the real
world, Jonson said. The competition on
the test is pretty good, and we have a stu-
dent in the class this year whose brother
did real well on it a few years ago, and she
is hoping on beating his record.
Pat does a really good job of dem-
onstrating, and showing what they have
learned.
Jonson said that she hopes to continue
the program into the future because of the
good response the students have given it
over the past eight years. It is another out-
standing example of hands-on learning.

Systemic absorption

has produced a reversible
hormone disorder called

steroids and thus be more
susceptible to systemic
toxicity. Administration of
topical corticosteroids to
children should be limited
to the smallest amount nec-
essary.
The treated skin area
should not be bandaged
or otherwise covered or
wrapped so as to be occlu-
sive, unless directed by
the physician. Do not use
tight-fitting diapers or plas-
tic pants on a child being
treated in the diaper area,
as these garments may con-
stitute occlusive dressings.
Patients should report
any signs of local adverse
reactions, especially under
occlusive dressings. Local
adverse reactions infre-
quently reported with topi-
cal corticosteroids include
burning, itching, irritation,
inflammation, dryness,
infection, excessive hair
growth, acne-like lesions,
lightened skin color, allergic
contact dermatitis, break-
down of the skin, stretch
marks, and heat rash. If
irritation develops, topical
corticosteroids should be
discontinued and appropri-
ate therapy instituted.
