Spiritual Leprosy
By Philip Ademola Togun
Text: II Kings 5: 1-14 The above text tells us about Naaman. Verse 1 reads thus: Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the Lord had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, BUT HE WAS A LEPER. He was a man of wealth, high social standing and great influence, but he had an embarrassing problem leprosy, which evidently caused him heartache. He must have consulted many physicians in Syria without success. But when he met Elisha, he was introduced to Jehovah Rapha, God the Healer. Naaman had physical leprosy. Many people today are suffering from spiritual leprosy. Some cases of physical leprosy are very obvious with the stumpy fingers and toes and facial disfigurement, while others are not visible and can initially be covered with clothes, though over time they will manifest. There are also two types of spiritual leprosy the highly visible type manifesting as pride, anger, alcoholism and the not so visible ones like lust, pornography, adultery and fornication. The list is of course longer than the examples given above. The burning question is: What is your leprosy? Do you recognize it as a problem but have been seeking help in the wrong places? Many in the church today have abandoned Biblical counseling for psychology and psychiatry band-aid solutions at best.
Godly counsel, through Elisha, led Naaman to the river Jordan where his leprosy was washed away. Biblical counseling will lead anyone with a spiritual leprosy to Jesus to be washed in His blood. Writing his great song of faith about the efficacy of the blood of Jesus, William Cowper penned these immortal words: There is a fountain filled with blood Drawn from Emmanuels veins, And sinners, plunged beneath that flood Lose all their guilty stains William Cowpers spiritual leprosy was chronic depression with suicidal tendencies. When he was introduced to Christ, the blood of Jesus washed it away and he became a new person. The blood of Jesus will wash away your spiritual leprosy just as the river Jordan washed away Naamans physical leprosy. Are you ready to dive into that fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuels veins?
