Septic Tank and Soak Away pit for Sewage Treatment at JGE 1.

Description : The septic tank will be a buried, water tight receptacles designed and constructed to receive the wastewater generated from the LABOUR CAMP and offices of the contractor at the JGE enabling project. The tanks is designed to a. Separate solids from liquid b. Provide digestion of organic matter , to temporarily store solids c. Allow the clarified liquid discharge to the soak away pit. The settleable solids and partially decomposed sludge settle at the bottom of the tank and accumulate. The complex matter is digested and converted to ore stable products. A scum of lightweight material including fats greases rises to the top. The clarified liquid is allowed to flow through the outlet pipe which is below the floating scum layer. This clarified water is then led to a soak away pit where it will percolate down. The soak away pit is to be designed in a manner to permit the percolation of clarified water over a 24 hour period in order to be ready to receive the clarified water next day. 2. Basic Design Considerations : a. Septic Tank : i. Material of Constructions: GRP. ii. Construction: The tank will be water tight . The tank is divided into two compartments .The first compartment (inlet) occupies 2/3 length and the second 1/3 length. The two chambers will be connected by a series of T connections (spaced evenly across the width of the chamber), in order to prevent scum and solids carry over to the 2nd compartment. iii. Dimensions : The dimensions are indicative. The effective volume to be 45 m3. 1. Effective Volume : 45 m3 2. Diameter : 2.8 m 3. Length : to suit volume of 45 m3 4. Free Board : 500 mm iv. Inlet and Outlet arrangement: To ensure that incoming flow does not cause splashing, the inlet pipe ( 100 mm ) will be in the form of T connection and with openings protruding 100 mm on the free board side and 50 mm into the water. Similarly the outlet (100 mm) will also be a T connection. Pipe and fittings will be of GRP. v. Inspection port: There will be at least two inspection ports ( 1 in each compartment ) each of 600 mm size dia or 600x600 mm square opening. vi. Foundation: The GRP tank will be suitably founded on a concrete foundation .The foundation details will be per vendor recommendation and site conditions.

vii. Odor Control : Odor release to be minimized by 1. GRP odor control canister with minimum of 120 kgs of Activated carbon and with GRP pipe, fittings, vent, and appurtenance system components, which shall be designed and proven effective for raw sewage applications. viii. Testing: The tank will be tested for water tightness and structural integrity by completely filling the tank with water before and after installation and letting it stand for 24 hours. No loss should be observed for 24 hours. ix. O&M : Following maintenance checks will be carried once the pit is in operation 1. Every 6 months the tank will be inspected for build up of scum layer. This preferably done on weekends. 2. Pumping : As solids accumulate over a period of time ,tank shall be emptied by pumping out the contents every 6 months. 3. Once the tank is emptied it shall be inspected for leakage , if any . b. The Soak away Pit/Trench : Percolation of wastewater to surrounding subsoil. i. Area : Soak away pit should be sufficiently large to avoid flooding and overflow. The minimum capacity of the pit should accommodate all the wastewater produced during a day. The area is decided based on the permeability test ii. Permeability of Soil. If the percolation rate is too high, the wastewater might drain into the nearby watercourses before any effective treatment. If it is too low, the pit/trenches might soon clog up and wastewater would overflow. A site percolation test should be conducted to determine the soil permeability. As and The attached drg (Fig-1) illustrates the permeability and the area required based on the same. The common simplified procedures of percolation test for determining the absorption capacity of soil are given below(This is indicative .The contractor may choose his own method of establishing the permeability) 1. Excavate a hole 300mm square to the proposed depth of the pit and trench. 2. Fill the hole with approximately 150mm of water and allow it to seep away completely; no need to measure the time. 3. Refill the hole with water to a depth of 150mm and observe the time, in minutes, for water to seep completely away. iii. Construction : Refer to the Fig-1 attached . iv. Location : 1. Distance from nearest Foundation : 3 m 2. Distance from water course : 30 m. v. Maintenance Requirement: Periodic removal of any sludge accumulated.
