The Leica HM500

The Worlds first and only Headmounted Microscope Freedom combined with Outstanding Vision

Leica HM

We cant reinvent the human eye. But we can overcome the limitations imposed by nature. This is the vision that led us to the invention of Headmounted Microscopy: to provide the quality of vision of the eye itself, sharp, clear and immediate and at the same time magnified.

A New Definition of Vision The human eye is a highly developed organ. It is our most important tool, the interface between the world and the intellect. The eye brings to our consciousness the things on which we focus our attention. It guides our motor functions and our actions. The human eye is a dynamic miracle of biomechanics. It can focus close up or at great distance, with a field of vision that extends all the way from the tips of the eyelashes to the horizon. In a fraction of a second it can adjust its focus to a different object. Together, eyes provide three-dimensional images and automatically correct aberrations along the optical axis. But the human eye also has limitations, especially where tiny dimensions are concerned. The eye cannot zoom and thus requires assistance in viewing the world of the microcosm. While loupes, glasses, binoculars and microscopes can provide magnification, they do not have the flexible properties of the human eye. Our vision was to develop an optical system that does it all: provide the continuously variable magnification of a high-end microscope, change its field of view and focus like a camera, provide automatic parallax correction like the eye itself, and at the same time be as simple and easy to use as a pair of glasses. The answer is Headmounted Microscopy a concept that permits complete freedom of movement while offering variable magnification and a sharp, crystal-clear 3D image. A system that revolutionizes the work on microstructures because it is so simple to use and so closely related to the natural functioning on the human eye. A New Dimension in Surgery Worldwide some 700,000 surgeons are working in fields in which this revolutionary technology has become absolutely essential: vascular, cardio, plastic and reconstructive, cosmetic, paediatric, orthopaedic, general and trauma surgery, urology, spine and cranio-maxillo facial surgery.

Optical Excellence for Outstanding Vision The Headmounted Microscope is equipped with precision technology in its highest form, setting new technological standards for miniaturization. The lenses are ground, polished and coated with the greatest precision. A completely new optical concept ensures highest contrast for maximum detail recognition, sharp images with exceptional depth of focus, great luminous intensity and high resolution. Brilliant, crisp, highcontrast, distortion-free images and an incomparably large field of vision are the result. Magnification and Stepless Zoom With the Leica HM500 the eye learns to zoom. The user can take a close-up look at the object being studied and enlarge it as much as necessary, without moving the instrument and without using hands. With a touch of the foot, the finest structures become visible and crystal clear. The precise footswitch-controlled stepless optical zoom allows an infinitely variable selection of magnification factors between 2.0 and 9.0.

The Leica HM500 is a miracle of precision engineering. We believe that this groundbreaking development will bring a new level of satisfaction within the microsurgical community.

Outstanding Vision
Autofocus Headmounted Microscopy means always seeing clearly. Highly sensitive sensors detect the object and adjust the optics as quickly and imperceptibly as the human eye would. A crystal clear 3D image is ensured at every working distance. Powerful Illumination The integrated coaxial light allows a completely shadow-free illumination of the operating field. The light beam penetrates even the narrowest cavities, illuminating the field of vision brightly and uniformly. High quality Documentation from the Users point of View The Headmounted Microscope becomes a camera for documentation and state-of-the-art presentation. With the integrated autofocus video camera system the Leica HM500 is the worlds only headmounted vision system, which ensures a documentation and presentation from the surgeons point of view.

Large field of vision for an outstanding overview at every working distance and every magnification

Freedom
Unlimited Freedom of Movement Autofocus and automatic parallax control ensure that the 3D image always remains crystal clear, even if the working distance changes. Within a working range of 300mm to 700mm the user has complete freedom of movement. Highly sophisticated electronics immediately react to any modification of the working distance. The result is a perfect, crystal clear 3D image for any working distance. In addition, the Headmounted Microscope can be switched to manual mode at any time, in order to freeze the system at any distance and any magnification. Advanced Ergonomics for a Natural Way of Working Headmounted Microscopy features perfect ergonomic design created for constant use: great comfort, light weight, perfect fit, and simple utilization. The uniquely designed, well-balanced headset allows comfortable, non-tiring use even during long operations. Highest Flexibility Variable pupillary distance and individual vision correction enables a system that can be adjusted easily and quickly to each user. Unrestricted Mobility The system is characterized by great mobility to enable quick and uncomplicated set up after transportation from one operating room to another.
