Income and investment
Ploeisti is situated within one of the most economically developed counties of Romania, beneting strongly from the short distance to the capital, Bucharest. Although there is no available ofcial data on the disposable incomes of Ploiestis population, it is estimated that Ploiestis inhabitants earn at least 10%-20% more than the county average, due to the citys high concentration of foreign investments and its skilled labour force. Ploiesti attracts much foreign direct investment; the biggest international companies include Coca Cola, Unilever, Timken, Holcim, Johnson Controls, Interbrew, Calsonic Kansei, LukOil, Saint-Gobain and Yazaki. Unemployment levels are lower than the national average and income levels are also inated by supplementary income from Romanians economically active abroad.

Retail landscape
Supermarkets Convenience goods is Ploiestis most established retail sector, involving major international players such as Carrefour, Kau, Metro, Selgros, Billa, Interex, Mega Image, Pro and Penny Market. Further development projects now in the pipeline include another hypermarket from Kau and three Plus discount units. The high street High street retail is concentrated downtown in Ploiesti City along Republicii Blvd where all of the citys important national and international retail chains are concentrated. The prime shopping area is fully let, and competition for space means rents are high. Shopping centres Ploiestis shopping centre market is currently underdeveloped, with just one major development, Grand Center. The scheme, located in the downtown area of Ploiesti, is the former stateowned department store of the city, and has a letting area of around 15,000m. Other developments include the small downtown Mercur Shopping Center, small galleries with reduced local impact and two medium-size unrefurbished old-style centres. Many international retailers are expected to enter the Romanian market in the near future.

Ploiesti is the administrative city of Prahova County, located in the southern part of Romania, approximately 50km from Bucharest. With a registered population of 250,000 inhabitants (Census 2006), Ploiesti is Romanias ninth largest city and ranks second in southern Romania, after Bucharest, as a commercial and cultural centre. Its relatively youthful population (a higher than average proportion of 15-59 year olds) and even gender split (47% male 53% female) categorise it as a dynamic city. Prahova County is Romanias most populated county with 1 million people (Census 2006 ). It also has the highest county density in Romania of 176 inhabitants per km evenly distributed between urban and rural areas.
