VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves Make It Easy on Your Survivors Do you keep your service files organized? Most of us don't, unless pushed. But here's something to consider: Can your family easily find what it needs to handle your affairs if something happens to you? Here are a few documents your family will need to lay their hands on quickly: --Your DD214 or service equivalent. If you don't have your discharge papers, send for them. --A list that includes Social security number, branch of service, dates of service, date and place of birth. Include all the places you were stationed, and dates. --Immunization record, birth certificate and will. (You do have one, right? And it's updated, not one you wrote 20 years ago?) Add your government life-insurance policy, copy of all marriage certificates and divorce decrees and copy of children's birth certificates. Download online (or send away for) the following blank forms, to be kept in the file: Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes; Claim for One Sum Payment Government Life Insurance; Claim for Monthly Payments National Service Life Insurance; Application for Standard Government Headstone or Marker. If you have an ongoing claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs, put all related documents in a separate file, newest at the top. Keep several sheets of blank paper in the file so you can note the date, time and whom you spoke with whenever you call the VA so the information is always current. Go online to www.vba.va.gov, click Veteran Services, then Survivors. Scroll down and look for any additional information that might apply to you. Send for the appropriate forms. Print out the VA Benefits for Survivors pamphlet and put it in the file, or call the VA (1-800-827-1000) and have one sent to you. You only need to do this once. When you've assembled and organized your information, you just need to keep it updated. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Most do, and for a modest fee (usually under $50), a garden space is yours to use. This sometimes includes seeds and use of tools. Most allow only organic growing practices, so check that topic out at your local library. You wont believe how easy it is to grow your own food! -CC

FLASHBACK By Mick Harper 1. What group released Dottie, A Thief and Sassy Fran, all in 1958? 2. Which artist had a big hit with I Just Want to Be Your Everything? 3. What was James Taylors first No. 1 hit? What was the year? 4. How many No. 1 singles has Blood, Sweat and Tears had? 5. Name the group that released There Goes My Baby. 6. Which artist hires a new band wherever he goes? (Think: Wave Goodbye Tour) Answers 1. Danny and the Juniors. None were big hits compared to Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay, also released in 1958. 2. Andy Gibb, in 1977. The song zipped to the top of the chart and stayed there for weeks. A few months later it went to the top again for a week. 3. Youve Got a Friend, in 1971. The song won Grammys for Taylor and for writer Carole King. 4. Amazingly, none. Three songs in 1969, including Spinning Wheel, rose to No. 2. 5. The Drifters, in 1959. Ben E. King co-wrote and sang lead on the song, a precursor to the coming era of soul music. 6. Trent Reznor, aka Nine Inch Nails. Being the only actual member gives Reznor complete control. It must be working, as hes got multiple millions in sales. Most recently he co-wrote the score for the film The Social Network. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Quotes: The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all in their separate and individual capacities. Abraham Lincoln *** It was once customary to bake a cake with a bean in it on January 6th. Whoever got the slice with the bean was believed to have good luck all the rest of the year. ***

A LITTLE GROUND MEAT, PLEASE Cook ground turkey, chicken, or beef in a large frying pan or saucepan. Add your favorite seasoning and then let simmer for several minutes. Cool and put cooked meat into a freezer bag, laying the bag on its side to flatten before sealing. Place flattened bag onto a cookie sheet and put into freezer until frozen. Then remove cookie sheet. Now, when you need just enough of your favorite cooked meat for tacos, stew, sloppy joes, etc., you just snap off the required amount and put the rest back into the freezer. This is a great time-saver! -Dorinda B.

PUZZLES, GAMES AND EDUCATIONAL VALUE Why do people buy and play games? Entertainment value certainly factors in, but there are several other benefits to puzzles and games, including their educational value. Just think about what happens when children (or adults) sit down to play a board game or contemplate a puzzle. Individuals come together, learn lessons about getting along and strategize. Games also encourage following guidelines for play and winning or losing with good manners. There are many who believe these are valuable life lessons, but games and puzzles also may have other intrinsic educational value in the real world. Although it cant be assumed that playing games or doing puzzles will help make better students, there are some indications that playing certain games can have academic benefits. In a 2008 study by Geetha Ramani and Robert Siegler, preschoolers were involved in number lineboard game research, where the player had to move a game piece through a series of sequentially numbered spaces. Prior to and after the game play the children were given math tasks appropriate for their age group. The kids who were in the control group and didnt play experienced no math skill improvement. But the ones who had played the line game had marked improvement in measured math skills. Ramani and Siegler have also found correlations between the number of board games that a child plays and a greater propensity for better preschool math performance. Puzzles are another form of recreation that also have some educational merit and could trigger certain areas of the brain, resulting in improvement in

intellectual skills. Puzzles develop hand and eye coordination and foster skills in problem-solving. They also encourage kids not to give up until the finished product is reached. Chess has been a game of strategy played throughout the ages. There have been statements that chess can help a child become more intellectual and do better at school. Others argue the flip side, that it is the intellectual child who gravitates toward chess play and therefore skews the numbers in the terms of intelligence and chess relation. Still there is some evidence that chess has educational merit. Markus Scholz of the University of Leipzig in Germany studied kids with learning disabilities. Researchers assigned students to receive either 5 hours of math instruction each week or 4 hours of math and 1 hour of chess instruction each week. The kids were tested at the beginning of the school year and again at the end. The students who had received chess lessons showed more improvement in basic math skills like counting and addition than those who had just received tutoring.

You've Earned Your Senior Discount It only takes a little planning to join up with friends to enjoy some meals out. The bonus is that many restaurants give a senior discount. Here's a list of a few places you'll find discounts, broken down by age. Most give a 10 percent discount or offer a free drink. For those age 55 and above: Chick-Fil-A, Dunkin Donuts, Jack in the Box (20 percent off), Arby's, Dairy Queen, Popeye's, Fuddruckers, Country Kitchen, Wendy's, Denny's (usually 10 percent off, but certain days and times it's 20 percent), IHOP, Chili's. For those age 60 and above: Sizzler, Bob's Big Boy, Golden Corral, Applebees (15 percent discount), Roy Rogers, Burger King, Sonic, Friendly's, Ben and Jerrys. Be sure to call in advance to make sure there aren't any restrictions, such as days of the week or times of the day. Not all locations offer a discount. For those in the 55-plus category, call to be sure they haven't increased the age to 60. Don't forget AARP if you're looking for a discount. The website (www.aarp.org) has a list that changes. Click Member Benefits, then Discounts. Many of us don't want to ask for a discount in restaurants or anywhere else -- but we should! We've earned it! Here's a challenge for you for 2012: Ask for your senior discount everywhere you go, and keep track of how much you save through the year. You might be pleasantly surprised. Carry your AARP card at all times! (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

ACHIEVE PERFECT PICS WITH TIPS FROM A PRO Photographs are the way many people document lifes special occasions, milestones and even the daily moments that are worth saving and sharing. Nowadays, its easy to take photos for granted since digital technology has made taking photos simpler than ever before. The U.S. Library of Congress says that the oldest known photograph in the world was taken by French inventor Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1825. The photo depicts a man leading a horse. Niepces heliographs, or sun prints, were the prototype for the modern photograph. Although people have been taking photographs for nearly 200 years, some people still struggle to perfect their style and execution. Professional photographer Laura Kyle Bruen, of Laura Bruen Photography, works across New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and shares her expert tips for creating visual photo perfection. Photo taker: My camera has automated settings, but Im interested in having more control over my photos. What are some things I need to know? Laura: Step one would be learning the three elements of creating a correct exposure. This involves finding the balance between: ISO, shutter speed and aperture setting. ISO is the measure of a digital cameras sensors sensitivity to light. Aperture is the size of the opening in the lens, which allows light to enter. It also controls your depth of field (how in-focus or out of focus the background is behind your subject). Shutter Speed is the amount of time the shutter open and closes. The most important thing to remember is once you change one of these settings it will directly affect the others. I highly recommend Bryan Petersons book, Understanding Exposure, to learn about the balance of these settings and how it affects your images overall. Once you learn the rules of creating a correct exposure balancing these three settings, you can learn how to break them when deemed creatively desirable. PT: My photos seem great at first glance, but then I see something in the background that ruins the overall look. How do I remedy this? L: While the subject, not the background, should be your main focus, it makes sense to evaluate your surroundings when composing a shot, as an ugly background may distract from the subject. Training your eye begins with looking through the viewfinder and making some conscious decisions. A good method of doing this is to mentally divide your frame into nine equal parts. Evaluate your frame: Does that large box of tissues need to be in the background? Are there any large obstructions, garbage cans? Is the light behind you? See any objects with clashing colors to your subject or other undesirables? If so, recompose your shot. Make it a habit to perform this exercise and when your eye is trained, you will compose images before you even put your eye up to the

viewfinder. PT: How do I get my subjects to pay attention ... especially children? L: In addition to knowing your camera and the basics of photography, depending on your subject matter you will either play director or documentary still photographer. If youre working with an adult in a portrait, engage him or her in conversation to relax the atmosphere. Getting your subjects relaxed results in great images. With children, life is silly -- Ill do anything to get the shot -- dance, hop around making silly faces, even mount things on my cameras to get a rise out of small children. Do not force your subjects to do things they are not comfortable doing or do not want to do. Keep it light, fun and comfortable. PT: How do I know when to use the flash? L: The correct answer to this question depends on the current lighting situation. In every environment you have to analyze whether or not flash is necessary to achieve your desired outcome. As you progress/ advance youll learn techniques where you can add supplemental light to existing light. Some of todays best consumer digital cameras have very high ISO ratings that allow the photographer to shoot with relatively low light. On-camera flashes can be harsh. If you need to use your pop-up flash, I highly recommend purchasing a pop-up diffuser. It is a solid investment as it softens the light and subjects wont have that deer-inheadlights look. PT: Everyone has had a horror story with a photo that makes them look awful. I want my subjects to look their best. Are there any tips for

achieving this? L: We can all use posing tips! Direct your subject to bend his or her elbows and lift arms slightly away from the body to avoid flat arms against the body -- which is not flattering. Shoot from above if your subject has a full face to eliminate any double chins. Make sure everyone is standing up straight! Have subjects cross one leg in front of the other to slim the thighs. Rotate the upper body of the subject slightly at the waist (slight twist) to slim the waistline. Tell subjects to relax their faces and to smile with their eyes -- it works! I also tell my clients to get a good nights rest the night before a shoot. They arrive well rested and fresh faced, and its amazing what a good nights sleep can do! PT: Are there times when portraits or other shots are better left to an expert? L: A professional photographer would be best documenting major milestones in life, such as a newly born baby, first birthday, communion, or wedding or for commercial purposes where a professional shot will sell you, your product, or your service. Learning photo basics is the first step in taking beautiful photos. Then photographers can experiment to achieve the photos they desire. Laura is a member of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI), as well as the National Association for Professional Women (NAPW). She regularly blogs about her creative life interests on her official blog, shootscoop.com.

Q: We have a stamp collector's book from the early 1930s, filled with several hundred stamps, with and without postmarks. There also are some first day covers. How can I have this collection evaluated and appraised? -- Pat, Surprise, Ariz. A: There are several stamp dealers in your area. C & C Coin & Stamps is located at 3404 North 24th St., between Indian School and Thomas in Phoenix, and offers free appraisals. BJ's Stamps is at 6342 West Bell Road, also in Phoenix. If you want a more formal appraisal, I recommend the services of a professional who specializes in personal property. Two senior members of the American Society of Appraisers in Phoenix are Barbara June Bradbury (480) 947-2378, and Betty Goldfield (480) 502-2679. When hiring the services of an appraiser, don't hesitate to ask for credentials and references. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

* * * COLLECTING By Larry Cox Happiness Bird Q: I recently found a "Happiness Bird" in custard satin made by Fenton Glass in an antique shop in Joplin, Mo. I was told that it was made in about 1955. I paid $150 for it and was told by a neighbor that it is rare and priceless. -- Betty, Springfield, MO A: Since you are from the "Show Me" state, I will show you that neighbors aren't necessarily right. According to "Warman's Fenton Glass" by Mark F. Moran, your bird is worth about $40. Incidentally, custard satin was a matte finish introduced by Fenton in 1971 and available in several colors, including Blue, Crystal Velvet, Lime Sherbet and White.

A laptop placed directly on a surface can overheat causing all sorts of problems. You can buy a fan platform for $10 to $15, which will cool it off. Or you can buy a wire kitchen cooling rack at a dollar store or thrift shop for $1 or less. If you work in your lap, use the rack on top of a lap tray. This works great! -Betty W. *** REDUCE DRYING TIME Spinning the clothes through an extra spin cycle and then putting them into a dryer with a large, dry towel really cuts down on the electricity used. -Doris in Mississippi *** NO MESS BISCUITS For easier homemade biscuits with no messy countertop, mix up biscuit dough as usual. Spray 1/3 cup measuring cup with cooking spray and spoon the dough into the cup. Turn the cup upside down and then tap the cup until the dough falls onto your hand. Place onto a baking sheet and bake as usual. -Dody *** NATURAL INSECT REPELLENT I always switch to coconut shampoo and conditioner for the spring and summer months. Bugs and gnats arent attracted to the coconut smell as they are to sweet smelling shampoos. Any brand works. I buy the cheapest from whats on sale. No more swatting those critters. -Karen P. in Raritan, NJ *** PEELING GARLIC Heres a quick tip for peeling garlic. Microwave the clove for six to ten seconds (depending on the size of the clove and wattage of your microwave). You dont want it too hot. Just pinch it and the peel will slip right off. -Valerie *** TOP SONGS OF THE BABY BOOMER ERA Baby Boomers were born between the years 1946 and 1964. *** DID YOU KNOW? The body needs vitamin D to help absorb calcium, which is responsible for keeping bones, muscles and even the heart healthy and strong. Without enough vitamin D, men and women are at a heightened risk for osteoporosis, a bone condition in which bones become brittle and fragile due to tissue loss. Vitamin D is also beneficial for those who love to exercise. Muscles that dont get enough calcium will cramp, hurt or feel weak, possibly leading to chronic muscle aches pains. If the body is getting enough vitamin D, muscles are less likely to cramp or ache. While its possible to include vitamin D in a daily diet, its also difficult because there are not many foods rich in vitamin D. However, men and women can take a multivitamin or even a vitamin D pill to ensure they get their daily recommended amount of vitamin D. *** Arlene Palmer, Wellsville 4/15 Rosanne Kratts, Wellsville Mary Ann Temple, Whitesville 4/17 Priscilla Button, Scio Brittany Graham, Belmont Bruce Harris, Andover Arthur Stuck Jr., Alfred Station Erwin Wood, Wellsville 4/18 Tina Cornell, Almond Susan Davenport, Wellsville Guinevere Nobles, Bolivar Richard Schrader, Andover William Small, Little Genesee 4/19 Lucinda Hotchkiss, Wellsville Angela Kirtz, Friendship Baby Boy Kirtz, Friendship Pauline Stanton, Whitesville

Do you ever feel like youre trying to squeeze a size 12 life into a size 7 day? The unemployment rate is up so there are more people out of work now. And if you are working, youre probably doing the work of at least three people. Youre so busy making a living that you dont have time to make a life, at least not beyond work. But you have to work, right? So you have to figure out which half of your life to give to work, and which half to keep to make a life. Maybe youre like the fellow who was hauled into a Mexican court for contributing to an accident. The judge asked him, You saw the other car coming toward you... why didnt you give him half the road? I was going to, the fellow said, as soon as I figured out which half he wanted. Today stop trying to squeeze a size 12 life into a size 7 day. Figure out which half of your life belongs to work and which half to making a life. Then choose to Work Positive and Live Positive.

Its several years old, and the wallpaper in the kitchen has a number of small rips and holes from wear and tear. Can I repair these? I dont want to replace the paper just yet, as we are planning a remodel down the road. -- June C., Austin, Texas A: Wallpaper definitely has become a less popular design option over the years, as it can be a difficult material to work with as well as repair. That means you might not be able to find a matching pattern in a homeimprovement or paint/wall coverings store. If the previous homeowners were conscientious, you might be lucky enough to find the leftover scraps of that wallpaper stored in the garage, attic or other space. Thats the best patching material for this job. First, lets work from the presumption that you do have matching scraps. Select the first rip or hole and hold a scrap up to it to closely match the pattern in that spot; then measure and mark the scrap paper. Now, instead of cutting out the patch, carefully tear it out. This creates ragged edges on the patch that will blend into the wallpaper better than a clean-cut edge. Paste the patch into place and smooth the feathered edges into the surrounding paper. What if you dont have spare scraps lying around? You have two main options: Try and find the closest match at a store that sells wallpaper (or online), or just make spot repairs to the existing wallpaper until you begin your remodel. The best way to match is to bring in an actual sample, so cut a small piece from an obscure section of the wall. Id also recommend taking a photo of the wallpaper -- the color may not match, but youll be able to review the overall pattern. Find matching or almostmatching paper and patch as best you can. Otherwise, spot repairs, such as re-gluing peeling seams and corners, are a short-term solution until you can take down all the wallpaper. HOME TIP: Wallpaper that has been exposed to sunlight for long periods will fade or change color, something to consider when patching using stored-away leftover scraps. DOLLARS AND SENSE BY David Uffington Last-Minute Vacations If you didnt plan for a vacation this summer but are determined to get a break, its still possible even at this late date. In fact, the approaching end of summer might work in your favor as owners try to fill last-minute vacancies. Look for vacation rentals that are within a few hours drive of home. Youll save precious vacation time by not battling crowds and security at airports and wasting time in the air, not to mention saving money on airfare and transportation. Vacation rentals generally will accommodate your whole family and allow you to save money by cooking your own meals. Many provide laundry facilities. While you might think you want a place with activities suited to your interests, consider taking this opportunity to try something new. If youre into golf, go for a lakeside cabin that comes with fishing poles and a canoe. If you like water skiing, opt for a condo in an historic city for a change of pace. Go online to www.vacationhome rentals.com and click on your state. Youll find rentals categorized by county and town, with lots of photos and descriptions. If a property sounds interesting, check the availability. For verification or to ask if there have been cancellations, contact the owner using the online form. Ask if any end-of-season deals are available. Dont miss the Last Minute Deals link at the top of the main page. Check www.vacationrentals. com, and again click on your state. Youll be able to narrow your choices by date, reviews and whether the rental has a pool or allows pets. You can select multiple rentals to compare. Check the activities on each listing for local attractions. This site provides the owners name and telephone number, as well as an online contact form. If you want a lot of amenities, consider a timeshare rental. With timeshares, owners own a certain week or weeks each year when they have use of the accommodations. They cant always use those weeks and will rent out the property. Timeshares generally have a full menu of amenities, and many are luxurious resorts. Search online for timeshares in your state. Call the timeshare office directly, as its likely to have a list of rentals. As always, ask whether any discounts are available. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, to be specific. Its nearly 25,000 miles long, and the only part of it thats above water is the nation of Iceland. If you are an American of a certain age, you almost certainly spent time watching the 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. The saxophone was invented by a Belgian musician, Adolphe Sax, in 1841; it was finally patented in 1846. Today it is made in eight sizes, from the sopranino to the sub-double bass. Young people today who prefer the later works of Degas and Renoir hardly realize how much of its looser character was due to their failing sight. William Rothenstein *** I paint for myself. Ten "To Do's" For Homeowners (NAPSA)-It's time to check around the house to make sure things are operating efficiently. Here are 10 often-overlooked tasks to add to your home-cleaning list: 1. Check AC: Have your air-conditioning system tuned up to lower energy bills and ensure the system is running at its manufacturer-rated efficiency. 2. Check Water Heater: If your water heater is more than five years old, check it for signs of leakage or rusting at the bottom. 3. Fertilize Lawn: Apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer once in the spring and again in the fall. 4. Check Refrigerator: Clean the refrigerator's condenser coil with a long-handled bottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to remove dust and lint that could shut down the unit by causing it to overheat. 5. Clean Gutters: Clean the gutters so the rainwater flows easily off the roof. Clearing leaves prevents water from pooling in areas and attracting mosquitoes. 6. Organize Closets: Wash or dry-clean clothes before storing them in a zippered sweater or blanket bag or in a plastic bin. 7. Clean Carpets: Vacuum carpets and shampoo with a spray foam or powder, or rent a steamer from the hardware store for a deeper clean. 8. Wash Exterior Windows: Pick a cloudy day to wash exterior windows. Too much sun dries the cleaning solution too quickly and creates streaks. 9. File Important Documents: Store warranties, operating manuals and other documents in hanging files, folders or binders for easy access. 10. Check Batteries: The average home is filled with batteryoperated devices-from flashlights to smoke detectors to cordless phones. Don't forget to test those devices and replace the batteries with fresh ones. Test smoke alarms once per month and change the batteries at least twice per year. Ensure there is at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home, particularly in or near sleeping areas. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 3,000 people in the U.S. lose their lives in residential fires every year. It's time to replace the batteries if the detector emits a warning sound, such as chirping or beeping. Interstate Batteries makes 16,000 different kinds of batteriespowering automobiles, laptops and everything in between. Interstate All Battery Centers will have, find or build the right battery for just about any gadget around your home. For more information, visit www.interstatebatteries.com. It's a good idea to check your smoke alarm batteries and other batteries regularly.

ALFRED STATES NEW HORIZONS FORUM SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, MAY 1, 2012 Alfred, NY, April 2012- The Alfred States New Horizons Forum scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, 2012, will feature Debra (McQueen) Quinn who will present on Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS, also called Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disease for which there is no known cause or cure. The forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Room 215 of the Engineering Technology Building and is open to the public. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Engineering Technology Building. Deb began her fight with Lou Gehrigs disease (ALS) in October 2009. Upon researching her genealogy, she traced the disease through 13 generations of her grandmothers family to the early 1600s, discovering more than 20 additional family members who suffered from ALS. Deb has brought awareness into her community, raising money through her Quinners Quickfeet ALS team. She will not settle to keep the door closed and be quiet about this disease. It is hard, but she is the voice for her children, nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom have a 50 percent chance of inheriting ALS. Deb lives on the outskirts of Wellsville with her husband, Mike. She has two adult children, Kristin, 26, and Dustin, 25. Deb holds an associates degree in business from Alfred State. The New Horizons Forum, sponsored by the School of Arts and Sciences, showcases current scholarly, creative, and public service work by faculty, students, professional staff, and invited guests. It is guided by a campus-wide team of advisers whose goal is to enrich the intellectual life of the institution. Follow the Forum at http//alfredstate.edu/life-on-campus/newhorizons-forum. fb

many of them. The oral antiyeast fluconazole (Diflucan) is another approved treatment. Recurrence of this infection is common and hard to abolish. If it happens, longer treatment with vaginal antiyeast medicines coupled with a weekly dose of oral Diflucan for six months is a reasonable action. If that fails, referral to a center that has the capability to check Candida's sensitivity to antiyeast medication can end the problem. Unproven but popular ways of attacking this infection include eating yogurt with live lactobacillus in it to repopulate the vagina's normal bacterial population. Another unproven approach is to treat the male partner. It hasn't been shown that such an approach works, but some experts resort to it. Vaginal infections are discussed at length in the booklet on that topic. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1203W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. DONOHUE: What can you tell me about hypothyroidism? Does taking iodine help? I hear that taking thyroid hormone is a lifetime commitment. -- C.N. ANSWER: Hypothyroidism is a thyroid gland that's putting out way too little thyroid hormone. All body processes slow. People become weak and are exhausted. They're cold when others are pleasantly warm. They gain weight without overeating. Their skin dries. The face becomes puffy. The heart beats slowly. Worldwide, iodine deficiency is the main cause of a sluggish thyroid gland. It is not in North America. Here, the main cause is an attack on the gland by the immune system. supplying the hormone in pill form. It usually is a lifelong treatment, but it's not an onerous one. It's taking only one pill a day. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc. Gulf War Syndrome is often a mystery to the medical profession because there are so many varieties of symptoms. What happens in one veteran doesn't happen in another. Even the source isn't completely clear. Was it from the vaccines given? Bug sprays? Depleted uranium dust? How about the oilwell fires? Or was it from something completely innocuous -- the diet sodas? Aspartame is a sweetener that's used in diet sodas. Cooks realized long ago that using it in recipes was a bad idea because the sweetener breaks down at high temperatures. What happened to all those cases of drinks over in Iraq and Afghanistan? Were they kept chilled the whole way? Not likely. A better scenario is that they sat on the hot tarmac before being transported to a hot storage area.

Yeast Infection Tends to Recur DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I haven't seen an article about vaginal yeast infections. The doctor gave me an oral antiyeast medicine for it and a cream to apply. In addition, he gave me something to stop the itching. It seemed worse after the treatment, so the doctor gave me five more days of the oral medicine. What would you suggest if it comes back again? Could it be something I am eating or taking? -- N.F. ANSWER: Candida is the name of the yeast responsible for vaginal infections. Itching is a prominent sign. The vaginal lining also often is irritated and painful. Intercourse can be uncomfortable. White patches adhere to the vaginal lining, and there may be a white discharge. Close to 75 percent of all women will experience at least one Candida infection during their life. It has nothing to do with what you eat or take. Somewhere between 20 percent and 50 percent of woman harbor this yeast in their vagina but don't have any symptoms of it. If these women are put on an antibiotic for an unrelated infection, the vaginal bacteria that keep the population of Candida at small numbers die off. Without those good bacteria, the Candida yeasts reproduce at a rapid rate and lead to symptoms. You were put on a standard treatment for Candida. Those treatments are antiyeast medicines that come as ointments, creams or vaginal suppositories. There are

Travel Insurance May Be Honeymooners Saving Grace
pending on the coverage purchased, a portion or all of the money paid for the trip could be refunded in the event of a cancellation or emergency that calls off the honeymoon. Purchasing a travel insurance policy could be effective in a number of situations. * Couples are booking a honeymoon well in advance (such as a year or more) and want to protect themselves in the event the resort, cruise line, etc., folds before the trip can be taken. * The honeymoon locale is frequently affected by harsh weather conditions, such as hurricanes, earthquakes or typhoons. * Couples want protection in case the trip has to be cancelled due to a medical condition or a family emergency. * The honeymoon is very expensive and the couple is not comfortable with losing deposits or money paid in such high amounts. * The honeymoon involves complex plans of planes meeting with cruise ships, or a similar situation that is tightly scheduled. * A couple is taking a cruise. Many cruise lines have a no-excuses policy and may not be willing to offer refunds without a travel insurance policy in place. Couples should realize that not all travel insurance is the same and they may already be protected against some travel incidentals. Many credit card companies offer cancellation insurance on purchases, which makes buying another policy unnecessary. When shopping around for travel insurance, the trip itself can dictate the necessary coverage. Travel to an international country may require additional medical insurance for domestic policies that do not offer coverage overseas. Medical insurance also may include a portion for emergency evacuation or airlift in the event of a serious accident. Cancellation/interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable and additional costs to couples should they need to return home mid-trip or cancel the trip altogether. Its a good idea for couples to purchase travel insurance from a thirdparty instead of through a resort, airline or vacation company itself. Thats because, should the trip be cancelled because the resort goes bankrupt or experiences other financial hardships, theres no telling if that resorts insurance policy will be honored. A safer bet is for honeymooners to contact an insurance company with which they feel comfortable and inquire about the different travel insurance options.

Ideally, a honeymoon offers newlyweds the chance to kick back, relax and enjoy the start of their lives together. But when something happens to foil honeymoon plans, couples could be facing anything from financial hardships to a spoiled trip. Travel insurance may help couples protect their assets while honeymooning. Travel insurance can protect couples against lost funds and other incidentals on their honeymoon. De-

Planning a wedding? There are certain terms that every bride and groom should learn so they can be more informed in the process. Ascot: A wide, formal tie generally reserved for formal daytime weddings. Blusher: A short veil that covers the brides face before the ceremony. Bodice: Close, upperfitting part of the dress. Boutonniere: Flower or flowers that are worn by the men in the wedding party. The boutonniere always should be affixed to the left side of the jacket. Buttercream: Most common icing used on wedding cakes. Cathedral train: Train, or long piece of fabric that extends 61/2 to 71/2 feet from the waist. Cornelli: Decorative

about cars -- some fancy, some large, and many decked out with different features. Plus, its traditionally the responsibility of the groom to arrange transportation to and from the ceremony, reception and the hotel or honeymoon destination. Grooms responsible for arranging transportation can consider the following options. * Limousine: A limo is one of the most traditional methods of transport on a couples wedding day. A limousines size enables them to carry the bridal party in its entirety. Because the bride and groom often do not see each other before the ceremony, two limos may be rented, one larger for the bridal party, and one smaller

Couples have many decisions to make regarding their wedding ceremony and reception. One of those decisions concerns transportation to and from the special event. There are many options in wedding transportation. The more traditional options include renting a car or limousine. The Bridal Association of America reports that the average couples spends $400 to $500 for an automotive rental. However, prices may vary depending on geography and the type of vehicle rented. Wedding transportation is perhaps something grooms-to-be can get excited about. After all, were talking

for the bride and her parents, depending on personal preference. * Classic car: Sports car enthusiasts may want to make an entrance -and exit -- behind the wheel of a sporty vehicle. These can include a highend Ferrari or an Aston Martin. Because of their high purchase price, sports car rentals may carry a premium. * Stretch SUV: The traditional limo has morphed into the stretch SUV of popular models, including the Cadillac Escalade, Ford Expedition or even a stretch Hummer. Because of their popularity, these rentals may be snatched up quickly. Be sure to book well in advance of the big day. * Party Bus: Many couples are leaning toward a party bus rental, which may be a single- or double-decker bus that can fit scores of people inside. These are particularly attractive to couples with a very large bridal party, or those who hope to begin the

You can spend an entire year planning your wedding day down to the letter, but unless you have a fairy godmother, theres no way to guarantee that the day will be perfect. According to the August/ September issue of BRIDES Magazine, a little preparation goes a long way towards ensuring that wedding-day mishaps dont get out of hand. If you organize an emergency kit, and keep it stashed nearby at the ceremony and the reception, coping with certain last-minute dilemmas will be a breeze. BRIDES suggests you start with a pretty basket, decorated to match your wedding theme, then include the following: Needle, thread, buttons and safety pins. Extra stockings for you and your wedding party. Spot remover. Nail polish -- color to match your fingernails, and clear to keep stocking runs from

spreading. Extra lipstick, powder, blusher, eye shadow, fragrance. Comb, brush, and hairspray or gel. Extra pairs of glasses or contact lenses. Tissues and cotton balls. Aspirin, adhesive bandages, allergy pills and any prescription medicines you or your groom might need. Personal care items. Pen and note paper. Extra copies of all passages that are being read during the ceremony. Telephone numbers for your caterer, clergy member, organist, photographer, florist, band leader, car service and each member of the wedding party. Keep in mind the most important ingredients of all: patience and a sense of humor. Theyll turn any mishap mountains back into molehills. BRIDES & Your New Home
