The Holy Roman Empire or The Empire of the Germans was founded by Charles the Great
(Charlemagne), whose coronation on Christmas Day 800 gave Papal approval to the unification of France,
most of modern Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, and northern Italy under his rule.
Although his male line descendants had died out within little more than a century, Charlemagne is the
ancestor of every existing Christian European ruling or former ruling dynasty. The only modern survivors
of the Empire are the ecclesiastical Princes - the German Archbishops and Bishops - and the Sovereign
Princes of Liechtenstein. With the death of Charlemagne no ruler until Napoleon ever held sway over his
lands and the Imperial title became the legacy of the Germans.
A city in western Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia, situated where the three countries of Germany,
Belgium and the Netherlands meet. It was the birthplace of Charlemagne and the center of Carolingian
culture. Charlemagne made his permanent residence in Aachen and was buried in the cathedral he built
there.
The cathedral has since been rebuilt, but the Gramus Tower of the historic City Hall is said to date from the
days of Charlemagne.

THE CRUSADES:
http://crusades.idbsu.edu/Outremer/15.htm
Fought Zengi, ruler of Mosul, of the Muslim Army, who emerged as power and threat in the early 1130s.
He marched on Damascus, causing the Christians great concern, to the extent that Fulk marched to battle
him on more than one occasion. One of these occasions almost proved the King's undoing. Zengi's Muslims
were defeating Fulk's Franks in the battlefield. King Fulk managed to escape with most of his army into
Crusader castle of Montferrand, which then was besieged by the Muslim Army. He sent messengers out to
Antioch, Jerusalem and Edessa for help. All areas of the kingdom responded, but not in time. The garrison
was running out of supplies, and the walls of the fortress were being battered down by Zengi's siege
engines.
Fulk asked for terms, not knowing that help was on its way. Zengi asked only for Montferrand itself. Not
only would he let the King and all his men go free, he would also free all the captives currently in his
possession. Fulk accepted. He left Montferrand at the end of July, meeting the relieving army on the way to
Tripoli.
The King was saved, at the cost of a single fortress. Perhaps more importantly, all the Franks now
recognized that Zengi was their most dangerous enemy.

Medieval England
The Forgotten Queen by Haley Elizabeth Garwood is a gutsy tale of a warrior, Empress Matilda, daughter
of King Henry I of England and granddaughter of William "the Conqueror". Against the turbulent backdrop
of 12th Century England, Matilda had to overcome political intrigues, prejudice, and the lover who stole
her crown.
Matilda's destiny sent her down an arduous path. She led the last successful land invasion of England in
A.D. 1139 to wrench the throne from Stephen, the lover who betrayed her. Aided by her illegitimate half-
brother, Robert of Gloucester and scores of nobility, Empress Matilda gained control of the western half of
England.
The story is a fictionalized account of a woman's struggle ... a woman who actually existed and changed
history.

Queen of England, daughter of HENRY I. In 1114 she married Holy Roman Emperor HENRY V of
Germany, the Holy Roman Emperor. After his death (1126), she married (1128) Geoffrey IV, Duke of
Anjou & Maine. Henry I used Matilda as a dynastic pawn to re-established his alliance with the ANGEVIN
heir, Geoffrey. Matilda was 26 years old and Geoffrey a mere 14. At her father's (Henry) death (1135) her
cousin STEPHEN seized the English throne. In 1139 Matilda and her half brother Robert, earl of
Gloucester, challenged Stephen, and she was elected Lady of the English in 1141. Unable to establish her
rule, she withdrew her claim in 1148 in favor of her son Henry (later HENRY II).

*********
Second son of Henry & Eleanor, born 8 September, 1157 at Oxford. A brave, chivalrous
knight and fearless soldier, who attain almost mythical stature, appearing in the ballad
cycles of ROBIN HOOD as a noble saviour contrasted to Richard's brother, Bad King
John. Richard I fought in many crusades to protect his ANGEVIN EMPIRE. Richard I
was crowned in England at Westminster on September 3, 1189 and immediately set about
raising money for the crusade. In July 1190, Richard set forth to the Holy Land with a
great army of more than 6,000 men. In 1191, he married Berengaria, daughter of the King
of Navarre, in the Mediterranean on the way to the Holy Land. Many battles were fought
with the Saracens on the way to the Holy City, but before Richard could ever reach
Jerusalem, he received news that his brother Bad King John I (Nicknamed: Lackland)
Plantagenet was creating trouble in England, while King Philip of France began
threatening the borders of Normandy. Richard decided to return to England, his ship
"Franche-Nef was separated from the main body of the his fleet in a great sea storm.
Rumours and many believed he died at sea, but he traveled through the lands of his
enemies disguised as a woodsmen. Richard was captured and then held prisoner by King
Henry VI of Germany for two years, then released in March of 1194. Richard return to
England putting right the wrongs perpetrated by his brother, Bad King John, whom fled
to France. Later John threw himself on Richard's mercy and Richard forgave him. In
1199, after a treaty was made between King Philip and King Richard, King Richard went
on a minor reckless quest to recover a stolen treasure from the Archard of Chalus. During
the fighting Richard received a wound in the shoulder from a cross-bow bolt. The wound
fester and gangrene entered and King Richard was dead within two weeks. Not having a
heir to leave his great empire to, Richard bequeath his realm to Bad King John
(Lackland) with three-quarters of his treasure.
BURIAL PLACE: The Abbey of Fontrvault in the Loire valley, founded in the twelfth
century by Benedictine nuns, became the burial place of many of the Plantagenets. The
magnificent tombs contain the remains of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Isabella of
Angouleme (wife of Bad King John Lackland) and the Lionheart himself, King Richard I
Plantagenet.

Pannill Carter, VA by Carolyn Moore
This book CLAIMS descent to Teddy Roosevelt; will of Thomas reported to refer to lands in both South Carolina
and Virginia. Some credibility in that brother Robert is rather proven in Sumter County, South Carolina.
M.1. is just a device to sort this line from the others - for Daniel's work in St. Mary's Parish.
The entry at March - Tuesday 2 - 1858 (MSS 1858) of the Date Book of John of The Nest:
"Grandfather and his brothers, Dale and Tom, was all that staid in this county....
Grandfather Daniel Carter had a good plantation of about 350 acres and about a dozen
servants. He died in 1759 in his 59th year. He married a widen who was a daughter of
William Pannill of Richmond county; she died at the age of 81. They had 6 sons and 3
daughters. Wm. Pannill the oldest, John, Thomas, Robert, Joseph, and Daniel the
youngest was my father. The girls was aunt Fanny died at my house in I830 at the great
age of 92. Peggy married Wm. Kent and had sons Wm, John, and Danl. and daughters
Betsy, Molly & Fanny. Mary Elizabeth married a Kirk & had sons James, John,
&William. Uncle William lived in Pr. William county Co. & died just a month before father
died in 1794. He had 7 children, Dan’l, Billy *, John, Molly, Sally, Catharine, & Rachel
named for mother. Uncle John went to the western part of the state & is supposed to
have been killed by Indians. Uncle Joseph & uncle Tom after grandfather died moved
to the southern counties Mecklinburgh, I think, & then later on to Carolina, they had big
families, but I don't know anything of them. Robert had a quarrel with his father and left
home before grandfather died & was never heard of again. The youngest son Daniel
was my father & your grandfather. ... [more] ..."
* Billy is then the William Carter Jr. m. Nancy Unknown, per line of descent from Mrs. Margaret Ann Carter
Marsh Lee in her application No. 683 to The Colonial Dames of America which was approved on January 3,
1979. Mrs. Lee continues proof of her line with "Photcopy of Will filed 6 Sept. 1858 Pr. Wm. Co., Va.", and cites
Dr. Miller pps. 211 et seq., which is the above cited qouted material from John of The Nest.
Sorry if I almost overlooked you! Here is the complete and somewhat proven story. Just note the detail that your
Robert was born in 1731 - it was his cousin, Robert of Joseph, who was born 1735. Both dates are proven by The

There is (just) strong circumstantial evidence that this Robert is the one who died in Sumter in 1792 - just because
he was the proven brother of a Thomas and a John. The qouted will of Thomas appears to be the Smoking Gun,
but is supported by other pieces of evidence from Teresa Hammer on GenForum. (see our Bio of Thomas). The
evidence from The American Presidents book is suggestive, but far from convincing. Please note that it was his
cousin Robert - of Joseph of Spotsylvania and Catherine Stevens - who was born in 1735 and served in North
Carolina. (Both dates are proven by The Prayer Book). He also had brothers Thomas and John ..... but .... his
Thomas died early at age eighteen!
However, all these loose ends would appear to come together from the entry at Friday, March 5, 1858 of the Date
Book of John of The Nest (Carter MSS 1858):
"Uncle Joe and Uncle Tom after grandfather died moved to the southern counties, Mecklenburg
I think & John later on to Carolina" ........ together with .........
"Robert had a quarrel with his father & left home before grandfather died and was never heard from again"
3
"Father & all his brothers in the War of Independence" [consistent with patents in the Carolinas - however, they
all appear in the Carolinas before the Revolution?!?].
[American Presidents] This book CLAIMS descent to Teddy Roosevelt - with the will of Thomas reported to
refer to lands in both South Carolina and Virginia. Some credibility on it's own in that brother Robert instant is
rather proven in Sumter County, South Carolina on his own.
5. ROBERT CARTER, born between 1725 and 1738, who quarreled with his father and left home before his
father died, MAY HAVE BEEN the Robert Carter who emigrated from Virginia (place unknown) to Sumpter
county, Camden District, S.C., about 1752, where he was married in 1754 to Margaret, daughter of William
Brunson....
[Emphasis added ... Dr. Miller correctly hesitates on this one ..... yet he is proven correct in the long run].
Robert Carter of South Carolina was a member of the Provincincial Congress at Charleston, S.C., in 1775. He
made his will Dec. 28, 1791, in which he named the following children:
10. Robert Carter, Jr., born about 1755, who left issue two sons, who died without issue.
11. James Carter, born about 1757, had a son, John ...
12. Benjamin Carter, born about 1759, ... was a member of the Society of Cincinnati...
13. Daniel Carter, born Nov. 27, 1761, died in Tennessee in 1834. ...
Robert Carter also had daughters, Margaret Alexander and Susan Storrey, mentioned in his will.

ROBERT CARTER Birth: ABT. 12 AUG 1735 in Virginia [FALSE]Death: 28 DEC 1791 in South Carolina
Moved ABT. 1752 Virginia to Sumpter County, S.C.
Commissioned ABT. 1773 Captain in Revolutionary War [no one cites any source for this data]
Robert Carter, between 1725 and 1738, who quarreled with his father (according to a letter from a grandson of
Daniel Carter) and left home before his father died, may have been the Robert Carter who emigrated from
Virginia to Sumpter County, Camden District, South Carolina, about 1752, where he was married in 1754 to
Margaret, daughter of William Brunson. Robert Carter of South Carolina was a captain in the Revolutionary War
and a member of the Provincial Congress at Charleston, South Carolina in 1775. He was a member of the Society
of Cincinnati. He made his will on December 28, 1791 in which he named the children as shown.

From Historic Camden by Kirkland and Kennedy, page 359: "The Carter Family is one of the many once
prominent in Camden now utterly vanished. Their early location was a Carter's Crossing in old Salem
County, now part of Lee County. A few facts concerning the family can now be recorded.
In 1784 Joseph Kershaw conveyed Lots 635 and 636 to Robert Carter of Salem. On Lot 635 still stands an
old house, probably one of the oldest in Camden, where once lived Benjamin Carter, son of Robert Carter. It
will only be added here concerning Benjamin, the old Revolutionary hero of whom a full sketch will be found
at the end of Chapter VII that he acquired wealth in the business of tanning products, fine leather and
morocco. His vats were near the creek swamp at the terminus of York Street."
Same book, page 196: "Capt. Benjamin Carter (born 1756) for fifty years a resident of Camden, a gallant
soldier of the Revolution, was at the battle of Camden. He had been at Brandywine, Germantown and Valley
Forge. A native of Salem, Sumter District, he was a student at Charlotte, NC, in 1776 and enlisted for the
War there. He died in Camden, January 20, 1830, at the age of 74. Commanded his company on the extreme
left of Gage's line. Buried in the Quaker Cemetery, Camden."
"Benjamin was never married, but was a captain in the Regular Army and received a slight wound at the
Battle of Brandywine. He died at an advanced age and left a handsome estate to be divided among his
brothers and sisters' children, leaving about one-half to his nephew, John Carter, the only son of William
Carter, who he had educated and who was a member to Congress from Kershaw District. My Uncle
Benjamin's residence was Camden, SC."

I think & John later on to Carolina". [One of very few discrepencies discovered]
"Father & all his brothers in the War of Independence" - consistent with patents in the Carolinas.
The entry at March - Tuesday 2 - 1858 (MSS 1858) of the Date Book of John of The Nest:
"Uncle William lived in Pr. William county & died just a month before father died in 1794"
Let's assume the date everyone else has of Sept 1794 is (once again) the date of the will.
Uncle John went to the western part of the state & is supposed to
8
have been killed by Indians.

[I spoke with Soc of Cincinnati PA, who I'd email contacted and he returned call, who said that Daniel was a
member of the militia, not the Continental Army, and as such was not eligible to be in the Soc of the Cin, SC
branch or PA branch. He could be in the NC branch, since they accept militia, but he served in SC so he might be
ineligible for NC membership.
Since Benjamin had not had children, the current incumbent came in through a collateral relative, i.e., brother
Daniel. I am eligible through Daniel too, but there would have to be a vacancy, and I don't know who exactly the
guy is now, how old, whether sons, etc.]

DAR applicant was closely related to the Revolutionary War Patriot; i.e., in the case of the earlier DAR volumes,
the applicants were often granddaughters (and in a few cases, even daughters) whose applications were actually
"written family history" (see for example, the application of Quintilia T. HAYNES Ringo, granddaughter of
Revolutionary War Soldier John HAYNES).

Generation No. 36
8. DR. BENJAMIN7 CARTER (DANIEL6, ROBERT5, DANIEL4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 14 Jun 1792 in
Sumter District SC, and died 16 Jul 1865 in Pulaski, TN. He married ELIZABETH KINCHEN LINDSAY 13 Jun
1822. She was born 17 Oct 1800, and died 08 Mar 1873 in Pulaski, TN.
"There are few persons but who desired to know something of the history of their ancestors. Yet there are but few
who can trace back their ancestors to more than the second or third ancestory. And I myself am not able to tell
you anything relative to my Great-grandfather or Mother. As far back as I can go is to make you slightly
acquanted with the Grandfathers and Mothers, and I do hope that some of my children will continue this imperfect
History which I have commenced, and not leave their offspring in the same state of ignorance relative to their
ancestors which we find ourselves.
"My Grandfather's name on my father's side was Robert Carter and my Grandmother Margaret Brunson. My
Grandfather on my Mother's side was named W. Conyers (his name was actually James Conyers - see Conyers
Family) and Grandmother's name was McIntosh.
"My Grandfather Robert Carter moved from the State of Virginia to South Carolina previous to the Revolutionary
War. It is said that he had no brothers, so the large family of Carters who resided in the State of Virginia cannot
be very closely related to our family. They resided in Sumters District on the waters of the Black River. Each of
my Grandfathers left a considerable offspring.
[Here I skip over the names and offspring, since they are filled in elsewhere]
"My Grandfather Carter and all of his sons were active Whigs during the Revolutionary War. My Father was a
lieutenant in the Cavalry.
"My Grandfather Conyers was confined to his sick room during the War, but his sons, James and David, were in
the service as officers. James was at the fall of Savannah and died in the service shortly afterwards. He left sons
with whom the name of Conyers remain. Daniel died leaving several children. Stran had only one son and one
daughter. The son died insane without marrying. The daughter had a considerable family. My Grandfather
Conyers, although confined to his room during the War, rendered his country important service by conveying
information to General Marion and furnishing ammunition, for which he was paid by the enemy by burning his
dwelling, carrying off his slaves and destroying his stock.
"My Father's family were long-life persons, but on my Mother's side they were short lived. She lived the longest
of any of her family and died in her sixty-fourth year. The balance of her brothers and sisters died from thirty to
fifty years of age.
'My Father lived to be 83 years of age and was pretty active at 75 years, though he had twice suffered very
severely from rheumatism. My Father and Mother were both Presbyterians, and as far back as I can recollect, and
they informed me that they had had most of their children baptized by a Presbyterian preacher by the name of
Rev. W. Rees, that is, commencing with the oldest and ending with myself. The remainder were baptized by Rev.
M. Stephens and some other Presbyterian preacher. My Father was long a Ruling Elder in that Church."

9. JAMES RUTHERFORD7 CARTER (DANIEL6, ROBERT5, DANIEL4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1)1 was born 04 May
1784 in Sumter, SC, and died 01 Apr 1835. He married MARGARET.
10. ROBERT WILIAM7 CARTER (DANIEL6, ROBERT5, DANIEL4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 28 Jun
1787 in Sumter, SC.
11. MARY ELIZABETH7 CARTER (DANIEL6, ROBERT5, DANIEL4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1)1 was born 14 Feb
1801 in Edgefield, SC, and died 28 Mar 1874. She married JOHN W. SMITH 20 Feb 1823. He was born 08 Oct
1798.
Generation No. 37
12. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN8 CARTER (BENJAMIN7, DANIEL6, ROBERT5, DANIEL4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was
born 26 Sep 1828, and died 1910. He married CYNTHIA HOLLAND RIVERS 06 Apr 1852 in Columbia TN,
daughter of JOHN RIVERS and SARAH RODES. She was born 15 Oct 1833, and died 1901.
"My grandfather Daniel Carter removed from SC with a part of his family and settled on Carter's Creek in Maury
County TN on a 5000 acre tract granted to his brother, Captain Benjamin, by the State of NC for service in the
Revolutionary War, said Creek bearing the name of the grantee. Captain Benjamin Carter came to TN with
Robert Campbell (afterwards a judge of the Supreme Court of TN), who located a similar grant adjoining the
Carter entry.
"When my Grandfather moved to TN the means for education were very limited, but my father attended a school
at Franklin taught by a noted education named Blackman or Blackhorn. At the same time James K. Polk
(afterwards President Polk) was, as I have understood, a classmate of my father. Subsequent to leaving the school
at Franklin was father read medicine and attended medical lectures at Baltimore where he always went by
13
horseback. When he commenced to practice his profession he settled at Elkton in Giles County, TN, at that time
the most important part of said county.
"My Grandfather Carter was one of the few Revolutionary soldiers I ever knew. I never saw my Grandmother
Carter, who died two years before I was born. I well remember my Grandfather's second wife - the widow Sarah
McCabe. They were married June 18, 1833 - were quite old when they married and had no children. After his
second married my Grandfather lived and died near Franklin, TN on the Columbia Road. I remember being there
at least twice with my mother and sisters, and once by myself, about 1842, when he sent me to Nashville to draw
his pension as an officer of the Revolutionary War. The pension was paid to me in silver dollars which I carried
in saddlebags. Silver dollars were scarce at that time and were seldome used as currency. The silver in
circulation was chiefly of Spanish coinage in denominations of 6 1/4, 12 1/2 and 25 cents. The circulation in
general use was issued by State banks and many so-called 'wildcat banks.' The latter's 'promise to pay' were
seldom redeemed and disaster to the country was the natural result.
"I do not know that my grandfather held a higher rank than lieutenant of cavalry, though he was always called
Captain. He was fond of relating incidents of the war, many of which are fresh in my memory. My father always
spoke in highest terms of his mother who, from all I have heard, was a high type of our Colonial dames.
"Living at a time when the Colonies were solely harassed by unrelenting partisan warfare, she, like many of her
sex, had daring adventures against the Tores - many of which are items of interest in American History. My
Grandmother's intelligence, influence and superior management of household affairs were prominent features of
her character, but above all, her Christian example and precepts are treasured by her children as a sacred
inheritance.
"Enlisted in early manhood with the TN volunteers as Adjutant Surgeon in the Creek War under command of
General Jackson, but after a hard campaign of much suffering by the army, his health became impaired and,
resigning his commission, he returned to Elkton. After leaving the medical school at Baltimore, he contemplated
locating in New Orleans and had letters of introduction and endorsement to Maj. Gen. James Wilkinson, in
command of the US Army, to Judge Robert Livingston of the US DIstrict Court, afterward Minister to France and
later, a member of Pres. Jackson's cabinet. My father, however, was persuaded to settle at Elkton and his letters,
like others of the same tenor, were never presented and are now in my possession. (I now have them - W.R.P.)
After securing a good but laborious practice at Elkton, he married Elizabeth Kinchen Lindsay. . .
"My parents moved to Pulaski between the births of my second and third sisters when my father formed a
partnership with Dr. William C. Topp in the practice of medicine. After retiring from active practice about 183_
to ___ he began his mercantile career as mentioned before. I well remember, however, though quite young, the
malignant cholera epidemic of 1833 in Pulaski and that my father remained at home attending the stricken after
sending his family to my grandmother Lindsay in Maury County. The year 1833 was long designated as 'the year
the stars fell' - a meteoric phenomenon as alarming to many as its contempory, the cholera.
"In 1828, the year of my birth, my father had his future residence built near the southern boundary of the junction
of Madison and Jefferson Streets and there lived the remainder of his life. This building was destroyed by a
tornado on the night of December 26, 1865, at the same time that several other buildings were demolished and
injured in the western part of the town and when several persons were killed. Attached to the rear of my father's
residence was a one-story frame building not seriously impaired by the storm but, being vacant and isolated, it
was chosen by the mysterious 'Ku Klux Klan' as a suitable place to organize and hold its meetings. This historic
room still (1904) stands near its first location.
The Ku Klux Klan was conceived in a spirit of levity by a few young men of Pulaski in 1867, having no
ulterior purpose than to play upon the credulity of a superstitious, demoralized and lawless element in the
community, aided and abetted by more lawless aliens to the South known as Carpetbaggers. Similar named
orders were speedily organized in all the Southern states and had a potent influence in settling the disturbed
condition of the country. "
