Description of Safety Features

Section 1: Risk for the User. Transforming the FlexStep Compact from Staircase to Platform: At lower/upper level: The position of the lower call buttons (hold-to-run) should place the User in a safe distance to the movement of the FlexStep Compact leaving no risk for the User. At upper level: If the FlexStep Compact is delivered with a safety barrier at the top landing area (recommended for lifting heights above 500 mm), the barrier will move to its locked position before allowing the FlexStep Compact to move. Driving onto the Platform at the upper level: The Platform is only able to move away from its Staircase position when the ramp is upright in its locked position. A Lock Switch ensures that the Ramp is in the right position; if not, the FlexStep Compact will not be able to move. (See picture). The ramp will withstand a pressure of minimum 50 Kg at any point. Moving the Platform upwards or downwards. Through the advanced Control Unit the four actuators are only allowed a difference in their relative position of maximum 10 mm. If this value is exceeded, the Platform will stop its movement. Unintended movement of the FlexStep Compact. The FlexStep Compact may start to move unintentionally (i.e. when a User is still on the Platform) in two situations: The Automatic Return function will try to start when the Time Delay (normally set at 60 seconds) is expired. The Time Delay will restart if any of the infrared sensors are activated or any of the operating panels have been activated. In case the Automatic Return function does start (alarm is given 5 seconds in advance) activating any button will cancel the function.

Section 2: Risk for others than the User: Transforming the FlexStep Compact from Staircase to Platform: When the FlexStep Compact is moving from Staircase to Platform there is a risk of personal injury in two areas: 1: Between the steps and 2: underneath the Staircase/Platform. 1: Infrared sensors are mounted above each step to prevent squeezing of any body parts between the steps when moving downwards in Staircase mode. (See pictures) 2: Pressure plates are covering the underside of each step and the underside both side frames. Any contact with these pressure zones will activate a switch that will prevent further movement of the FlexStep Compact in downwards direction. (See pictures) Moving as Platform downwards. There is risk of getting body parts squeezed when moving the FlexStep Compact down as a Platform. Pressure plates are covering the underside of each step and the underside both side frames. (See pictures) There is a risk of falling from the top landing area down onto the FlexStep Compact when this has been called away from its upper position. If the FlexStep Compact is delivered with a safety barrier at the top landing area (recommended for lifting heights above 500 mm), the barrier will move to its locked position before allowing the FlexStep Compact to move.

Roll Off Protection from platform. Ramp in upright position is locked and prevents the wheelchair from rolling off during movements of the Platform

Operating Panel with emergency stop on Staircase and Platform. Activating any button will cancel the Automatic Return function.

Ramp in upright position. When in upright position, the ramp is locked and the lock will activate a switch, to allow movement of the FlexStep Compact.
