1.2.1 Vision

of simplicity

Technology exists to help make our lives easier and more productive. So why is it so often such a hassle, full of complexity and frustration? At Philips, we believe that technology should be as simple as the box it comes in. It's this very simplicity that transforms a task into an opportunity, a burden into a pleasure. Which is why we are committed to delivering products and solutions that are easy to experience, designed around you and advanced. Simplicity can be a goal of technology. It certainly is the goal at Philips. It just makes sense

Why simplicity?
The digital revolution is supposed to have made our lives easier, but studies have shown thats not the case. Around 30% of home-networking products, for example, are returned because people cant get them to work. And 48% of people have put off buying a digital camera because they see them as too complicated. This need to simplify the way we experience technology was something we recognized and wanted to address. In January 2003, we carried out research to find out if you shared our vision. We asked 1,650 consumers and 180 customers in 120 in-depth interviews, 24 focus groups and 1,439 quantitative interviews. We talked to people from the UK, the US, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil, China and Hong Kong.

The results
What we discovered was that people around the world regardless of where they live want the benefits of technology without the hassles. I dont want to build a car I want to drive a car, as one respondent put it. In other words, the world is already complicated enough; you want simplicity. Our research showed that we had a unique opportunity to answer your need for simplicity, while strengthening our brand in the minds of consumers and customers everywhere.

12

And thats why were promising to make technology easier for you to experience and designed around your unique needs, while still remaining advanced. Our brand now reflects our belief that simplicity can be a goal of technology. It just makes sense.

divisions make up Philips Electrical Industries of Pakistan Limited.

Whether in homes, factories, offices, airports, or on the street, it's hard to imagine a place where Philips is absent. Some of its products are tucked away inside, like integrated circuits or CD drives. Some of them are undergoing dramatic changes in their dimensions - think of the flat screen TV, which can hang on the wall. Five of the world's top ten PC manufacturers sell monitors produced by Philips. And throughout Pakistan, whether passing by or visiting the Quaid-e-Azam Mazar, Fere Hall, Mohattma Palace to name just a few and if your watching a thrilling game of day/night cricket at the National Stadium in Karachi or the Ghaddafi Stadium in Lahore, you don't have to wonder anymore who lights these landmarks.

1.4.3 Our

Motivation & DBMS Architecture Overview

The database-centric view of the CS research universe (take with a large grain of salt):

OS & Architecture are ``finished'': Ascendancy of Linux and FreeBSD. If Microsoft & Intel can mass-market these, it must be easy. PL has become arcane Theory is ... theoretical. AI is that which cannot be done etc... while you may (should!) disagree with all the above in some respects, it is true that DB research is notably relevant and fertile these days. Lots of meaty problems remain that people care about. Implementation: o Single-Site (i.e. traditional) o Parallel: lots of tightly-coupled machines solve one query together. A database supercomputer. o Distributed: geographically distributed machines, each "hosting" different data, participate in a more loosely coupled manner

Chapter 2# Literature Review

2:1 Introduction
Increasingly, enterprises or business organizations are facing greater competitive pressure because efficient production is now the norm. Consequently, new ways of establishing comparative advantage are being sought. Increasingly, businesses are seeking to create competitive advantage by reconfiguring their activities so that they are better aligned with ever-changing market needs. This model of market competitiveness relies upon the rapid exploitation of business intelligence, which requires workers to possess information handling and decision making skills. Information systems enable firms to attain information technology integration. Such integration results in a uniform information system across the entire organization, thus augmenting performance. In this paper, the issues and performance of Oracle information system are discussed. The factors of influence to implement Oracle information systems, various issues involved in the process of implementation and performance of the systems. Oracle enables firms to perform better by simplifying and streamlining their information retrieval and dissemination processes. Oracle's Web-based network computing architecture (NCA) offers many advantages, such as higher scalability and better coordination with suppliers and customers. For almost 30 years, Oracle has been helping customers to manage businesses systems and information with reliable, secure, and integrated technologies. Oracle makes implementation easier, faster, effective, and return on investment is higher. Implementation Cost is also 33 to 80 Percent of the Cost for SAP Edison Group, a technology analysis and consulting firm, worked with independent industry consultants and vendor partner consultants to identify more than sixty Oracle and SAP customers of all sizes and industries for the survey. Customers were asked to detail their IT environment, business intelligence (BI) strategy and business processes. "Our report findings confirm that Oracle Daily Business Intelligence is a powerful solution that provides customers with an open technology framework for a successful BI strategy," said Edison Group CTO, Barry Cohen. "Customers can use Oracle Daily Business Intelligence as the foundation for
17

tracking and measuring key business metrics and performance. Its native integration with Oracle E-Business Suite allows customers to implement it and achieve value quickly." According to companies surveyed, customers can benefit more, because they do not have to buy, install and maintain a separate server to obtain management and operational reporting. Oracle customers also cited that implementing Oracle information system was accomplished in weeks up to a maximum of three months. Customers also noted the affordability to maintain and support Oracle using in-house talent. When external resources are required, they tend to be more affordable than their SAP counterpart.

2.1.1 Technology

Solutions

Oracle was the first to commercialize relational database technology and is pioneering the use of Linux and grid computing technology in the enterprise. From Service-Oriented Architecture and RFID to Web services, XML, and beyond, Oracle is at the cutting edge of technology. Leading companies are tackling the complexity of their application and IT environments with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), which facilitates the development of modular business services that can be easily integrated and reusedcreating a truly flexible, adaptable IT infrastructure. With an SOA approach, IT organization will focus more resources and budget on innovation and on delivering new business services.

2.1.2 Benefits
Reduce development time and cost: SOA services are easily reused and can be rapidly assembled into new, composite applications. Lower maintenance costs Reusable services reduce the number and internal complexity of IT services. Higher quality services: Increased service reuse creates higher-quality services through multiple testing cycles from different service consumers.

18

Lower integration costs Standardized services know how to work together, enabling disparate applications to quickly and easily connect. Reduce risk Fewer, reusable services provide greater control over corporate and IT governance policies and reduce the overall compliance risk.

2.2 Oracle 2.2.1 Oracle

for Midsize Companies

Oracle Provides Scalable, Industry-Specific, and Best-in-Class Functionality for Fast-Growing Companies with Limited Budgets and Scalable solutions rapidly integrate with existing applications and hardware investments. Broad industry applications give built-in, industry-specific functionality. Bestin-class business flows enable rapid business-process changes to meet challenging business needs. How can company or enterprise remain competitive in the global marketplace? How can you meet the expectations of customers and partners while still controlling costs? The answer is to choose smart and affordable IT solutions that are easy to buy, install, and maintain, but that still give the power, security, and functionality of enterprise-strength systemsat a fraction of the cost.

2.2.2 Why

Oracle?

One of the main reasons why Oracle was chosen over other enterprise resource planning applications such as SAP was because the software offered greater flexibility and functionality. Software or market support with Oracle technology is also available locally The companies who engaged Oracle for its different modules said, We also believed Oracle offered a better qualified team to lead the implementation. The Oracle team was proactive and more open to suggestions. We felt we could make some pressing demands and still receive a high level of support,

19

2.2.3 Rapid

& Powerful Development

The rapid growth of e-Commerce and the Internet is accelerating the expansion of user communities and driving demand for higher levels of application performance, reliability, and availability. Business environments are more dynamic than ever before, requiring that applications be adapted to changing business requirements in shorter amounts of time. More than ever before, businesses need tools that enable rapid response to changing requirements and rapid and seamless application development and deployment. Using a declarative, document-centric development model, Oracle focuses a new user on the tasks required in the design, while still allowing experienced developers to have total control of their development. Seemingly daunting tasks such as designing complex data models and layouts become simple drag and drop actions.

2.2.4 Data

Access

Oracle provides access to multiple different data sources out of the box. It supports SQL, PL/SQL (ref cursor), XML, JDBC, Oracle OLAP, and text files (both delimited and fixed format). You can combine queries from different data sources in a single report and link them to produce master-detail relationships. The data of the query can come from any data source. In order to easily personalize query, just include parameters in query definition, which allows passing query criteria at runtime. An open Java API allows creating specialized data sources as plug-ins so tailor the data access to data.

2.2.5 Oracle

Forms Developer

Forms Developer's integrated set of builders allows business developers to easily and quickly construct sophisticated database forms and business logic with minimal effort. The development environment provides powerful declarative features, such as wizards, built-ins, and drag-and-drop, for the creation of fully functional applications from database definitions with minimal coding in record time.

20

RAPID APPLICATION (RAD) FOR THE WEB

2.3

DEVELOPMENT

The ability to easily and rapidly build and deploy web based database applications in a declarative and productive manner is of paramount importance. Oracle Forms Developer meets these needs head on. Both novice and expert developers benefit from Oracle Forms Developer's declarative RAD environment. Oracle Forms Developer enables business developers to build Web applications that are optimized for the Internet without writing any Java code. The tool set includes many wizards and utilities to speed application development.

2.3.1 Unprecedented

productivity

Oracle Forms Developer is an extremely productive development environment enabling Rapid Application Development (RAD) of transactional Web applications. Most of the development in Oracle Forms Developer is done in a declarative way. Wizards guide developers through common tasks such as defining data sources and page layouts. A visual layout editor is used to refine the form's structure and to add graphical components to the layout. Property palettes are used to define object's attributes saving coding time. Coding logic in Oracle Forms Developer is done using the PL/SQL language in a colorcoded editor that also includes a sophisticated debugger. Developers can create components and inherit and reuse them between different applications to eliminateredundantcoding. Oracle Forms Developer can create code to default behaviors based on database definitions. Components such as master-detail relationships, check constraints and mandatory columns are automatically identified and code is generated to enforce them, saving developer's time and effort.

2.3.2 Full

development life cycle support

Oracle Forms Developer's tight integration with Oracle Designer provides the most compelling tool-set available for supporting the full application development life-cycle. The modeling tools in Oracle Designer allow you to visually capture business requirements and transform them into physical designs. The design tools and application generators lead business developers through the process of quickly converting physical specifications into fully
21

functional Oracle Forms Developer applications. The client generators are fully integrated with Oracle9i Forms Developer for both forward- and reverseengineering. You can model what you build and build what you model. Switch smoothly between tools for iterative, rapid development and prototyping. Oracle9i Forms Developer is also integrated with Oracle SCM (Software Configuration Manager) to support the full application development life cycle. Using Oracle SCM developers can check-in and check-out modules they are developing to facilitate team development and version control. Oracle SCM understands the structure of Oracle Forms and supports dependency analysis and files doffing and merging.

2.3.3 Network

traffic optimizations

Oracle Application Server Forms Services is highly optimized to reduce network traffic and to minimize database response time. For example, Oracle9iAS Forms Services renders application interfaces as a highly optimized generic Java applet and uses mechanisms such as message doffing, message bundling and Jar file caching to reduce the number of roundtrips between the client and the middle tier. At the same time, Oracle9iAS Forms Services leverages the unprecedented capabilities of the Oracle Database (such as array fetch processing and stored procedures) to minimize the interaction with the database server.

2.3.4 HTTP/HTTPS

Support

The deployment with Oracle9iAS Forms Services is optimized for corporate intranets, extranets, and for the Internet using socket connections or HTTP/HTTPS communications between the client and the middle tier. The support for HTTP/HTTPS allows Oracle Forms applications to be deployed across industry firewalls in a highly secure and optimized fashion.

2.3.5 ORACLE

REPORTS BUILDER

Page-Based Publishing for Online Viewing & Pixel-Perfect Printing

Oracle Reports offers various output formats for paper-based publishing. To generate output in PDF, HTML, HTMLCSS (HTML with cascading style
22

sheets), Microsoft Word-compatible RTF, Microsoft Excel-compatible spreadsheet, as well as more data rather than formatting oriented formats like XML and Delimited Data. The same report definition can also be sent to the printer in PostScript or PCL format. Oracle Reports now gives the freedom to generate paper reports directly as a spreadsheet, which allows the output file to be opened in Microsoft Excel. This output format preserves the rich formatting such as background and text color, graphs, images, and font styles defined in report. In addition, Oracle Reports has many more enhancements in the area of formatting, for example, the ability to use custom style sheets in HTMLCSS output, richer and clearer PDF output, time-axis enhancements in graphs, HTML 4.01 compliant HTML and HTMLCSS output, and honoring HTML formatting tags in all output formats.
Publishing Enterprise Reports as Dynamic Web Pages

Using Oracle Reports revolutionary reporting concept of the Java Server Pages (JSP)-based web source, it caters to all the needs of dynamic Web publishing. Based on the industry-standard JSP 1.2, it allows injecting dynamic report content into any surrounding structure. This surrounding structure could be an existing HTML Web page created by the Web designer, or any other modern format like WML for wireless browsers. Though Oracle Reports leverages specialized technologies suited to paperbased and Web reporting, it can store both the Web source and paper layout in a single report definition file. The paper layout and Web layout share the data model and program unit objects defined as part of the report, yet can be completely independent of each other as far as formatting is concerned.

2.3.6 Publishing

Information Anywhere

In order to bring flexibility to publishing, Oracle Reports offers a number of features that allows bringing the published data exactly where it is needed. Out of the box, Oracle Reports supports the following destinations: Browser, File, Email, Printer, Oracle Portal, FTP Server, and WebDAV

Scope of research

MEANING OF SCOPE IS: an area in which something acts or operates

or has power or control So scope of this report is that RDBMS helps in making business process..!!!!

The Scope of RDBMS Report:

The Relational Model is a logical specification of the functionality, behaviour and scope of a relational database. It gives us a formal conceptual framework for thinking about data and about what operations are possible on a database. It does not address issues about the storage and access methods that are provided by a particular implementation Short for relational database management system and pronounced as separate letters, a type of database management system (DBMS) that stores data in the form of related tables. Relational databases are powerful because they require few assumptions about how data is related or how it will be extracted from the database. As a result, the same database can be viewed in many different ways. An important feature of relational systems is that a single database can be spread across several tables. This differs from flat-file databases, in which each database is self-contained in a single table. Almost all full-scale database systems are RDBMS's. Small database systems, however, use other designs that provide less flexibility in posing

Philips Research Press Release

April 7, 2008 Philips signs long-term healthcare research partnership with one of the largest Chinese hospitals Philips and West China Hospital in Chengdu collaborate to develop new medical imaging procedures for diagnosis and monitoring of major diseases such as cardiovascular, cancer and mental disease Shanghai, China Royal Philips Electronics today announced that it has signed a long-term research partnership agreement with the West China Hospital, an affiliate of the Sichuan University in Chengdu, China. Under the seven-year agreement, Philips will collaborate with West China Hospital to develop new medical imaging procedures for the diagnosis and monitoring of certain types of cardiovascular disease (including coronary artery disease one of the major diseases in China), cancer and mental diseases. Philips is consistently strengthening its position in the fast-growing Chinese healthcare market a key element of the company's increased focus on emerging markets. With 5,000 beds and two million outpatients, West China Hospital is one of the largest and most technologically advanced hospitals in China, and the perfect partner for Philips, says Rick Harwig, CTO of Royal Philips Electronics. I am convinced that the results of the joint research program will enable us to strengthen our support capabilities and to refine our products to meet the specific needs of medical facilities in China. At West China Hospital we strive to provide our patients with the best care they can receive in China, and advanced diagnosis is definitely critical to effective treatment and satisfactory medical services, said Dr. Zong Guang Zhou, Vice Dean of West China Hospital, Sichuan University. Being one of the largest medical facilities in China, West China Hospital hopes to leverage the industry-leading imaging capabilities of Philips through this research collaboration to accelerate the advancement of our imaging methodologies in areas such as cardiology, oncology and certain mental diseases Chronic diseases, including those caused by cardiovascular problems, cancer and diabetes, caused 80 per cent of deaths in China during the period 1991 to 2000. The lack of timely medical treatment and efficient prevention measures are the main reasons for the continuing high levels of such diseases. As a leading manufacturer of sophisticated medical equipment for diagnosis and treatment, Philips continually strives to enhance the efficacy of its medical technologies through research conducted with leading medical institutions

28

The Philips/West China Hospital collaboration will include eight new research projects involving medical imaging technologies such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT).

Chapter 4# Recommendation
Automizing the system and making paperless environment is essential in todays world.

Relational Databases
A Relational DataBase Management System (RDBMS) is a database which implements the ideas of the relational model. All serious RDBMS products use the standard language SQL at a fundamental level for data access and manipulation. It can be used directly by people or (more usefully) by programs which need to access the database. In addition to efficient storage and retrieval, an RDBMS provides facilities to ensure the security and integrity of the data. A great strength of relational systems is their ability to handle complex structures (such as hierarchies and networks). Data in different records can be linked together as required (through Views), and in different and unanticipated ways if necessary. In contrast, most statistical systems require any such linking to be performed either at the design stage (requiring compromises and restricting flexibility), or through physical file linking, which is inefficient and can cause problems for data entry. It is only relatively recently that good RDBMS software has become available on PCs (with Access and Paradox), but now the advantages of relational database technology, once reserved for mini and mainframe users, can be exploited at any scale of processing. As a very rough generalisation, the older larger RDBMS products (Oracle, Ingres, ...) provide the robust, secure and efficient data management systems which are needed for larger projects, and run well on larger systems (under Windows NT, Unix, etc.). The newer PC products (Access, Paradox, ...) running under MS Windows provide excellent facilities for screen, query and report design (supported by event-driven programming) which enable the construction of attractive and easy to use front end environments. Their

29

database engines (the RDBMS part) are also quite adequate for running less demanding projects on well-specified PCs. Different practical situations have different requirements and can get very different performance from different implementations. Similarly, poor choices in the physical design of a database can lead to poor performance whatever the capabilities of the RDBMS.

Chapter 5# Conclusion
Relational systems are a good solution for many statistical processing systems, particularly where the requirements are more complex than can be handled easily in standard statistical packages. They can provide excellent flexibility, both for data structures and for the implementation of data handling processes, and they can be integrated with statistical packages for analysis and presentation With many projects the handling of meta-data (information about the data rather than about the data subjects) is important. Statistical packages provide facilities which are useful, if pragmatic and inflexible. Most relational systems do not provide much direct support for meta-data beyond that needed by the RDBMS itself, but through programming it is possible to make statistical metadata explicit in a relational database, so that it can be updated if necessary and extracted when required for use in other contexts. The scope of the meta-data can be as basic or as comprehensive as required, and could include (for example) scales, codes and labels used for categorical data, general descriptions, definitions and nomenclature, even sample design and data quality information.
