Due to a mutation caused by the geneseed common to all Black Dragons he developed a flat bone crest on his head, large blade like protrusions from his wrists and elbows, and apparently unique to himself, a overwhelming need to cause destruction and bloodshed. When dressed in his power armour, he stands even taller, the ancient set of Armorum Ferrum he stole from the forgeworld Stygies VIII indicating what he really is, a vicious and brutal knight, designed to charge and bring bloody violence to the enemy head on. The armour had been extensively modified and changed since he stole it, all sigils of the Imperium of man removed entirely, leaving the armour the uncompromising black of ceramite. His only concession to his new status as a follower of Chaos is the Shrike pattern jump pack he carries, the mouths of the retro-thrusters the maws of a twin headed snarling dragon being ridden by a daemon lord. 20

Origins: Angra Mainyu, a renegade space marine of the Black Dragons chapter, is a reviled and violent warrior, notable for his complete desertion of his Astartes brothers and the Black Dragon cult. His mutations have been termed unique by the chapter, in the sense that not only did he display the usual Black Dragon growths of bone crest and talons, his lust for violence and bloodshed even before the tragic incident on Stygies VIII was unmatched by any initiate before or since. The ill fated mission on the forge world Stygies VIII, intended as punishment for Sergeant Mainyu and his squad of assault marines during the Third war for Armageddon, involved a simple and routine patrol and guarding mission. Perhaps the Dark Gods heard the anger in the soul of Mainyu, but whatever caused it, the planet was caught unawares and unprepared for the sudden rupture in the warp that caused a warp storm to surround the planet, removing them from contact for just over twenty four hours. Whatever happened on the planets surface remains to this day a mystery, with no survivors from the incident, and no recoverable data on any of cogitator cores that remained undamaged. A joint report from the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Inquisition given to the High Lords of Terra stated:
So far as we have been able to judge, the sudden warp storm around the planet of STYGIES VIII cause a complete collapse in all technology on the planet's surface, disabling all planetary defences and in all likelihood crippling the entirety of Mechanicus implants and facilities. The only hints to what may have caused this unprecedented disaster is the foul taint of chaos that all astropaths and navigators on the investigation's ships detected. We suggest that...

However unlikely, something survived. A destructive, enraged, and entirely changed Angra Mainyu left the planet on a converted attack shuttle, taking with him three notable relics. When hailed by Imperium forces the only response they received was the cold static of radio silence. Many fast attack vessels were sent to receive the shuttle, but somehow it vanished into the warp, leaving foul screams echoing in its wake. No mention of Angra or the relics had been heard of until recently, when reports from the Eye of Terror stated than unknown and powerful Astartes had begun assisting Chaos incursions and raids on Imperium positions. The relics were immediately recognised by the Adeptus Mechanicus, and upon investigation the only possible explanation was forwarded by a captain of the Black Dragons chapter. Angra Mainyu had survived. For ten years he had remained hidden from sight, caring for the relics he had stolen from the forgeworld a set of ancient Mark III power armour, originally owned by the Ultramarines, and two relic power axes, forged during the Horus Heresy all now corrupted with the dread taint of Chaos. Eye-witness accounts place him at the front of conflict, assualting even the most heavily armed positions without fear, tearing into Imperium forces, much as he once did with aliens, mutants and heretics in his time with the Black Dragons chapter. In contrast to what some might deem his raptor bretheren of the Traitor Legions, he remains grimly silent throughout encounters, an unstoppable and implacable foe to all. The only recorded conflict occurred when a Black Dragon patrol encountered Angra among a pirate warband ransacking a hiveworld's supply barges. The fierce conflict went largely unnoticed by the rest of the Imperium, but the Black Dragon's Chapter Master was given a holo recorded by the sergeant leading the patrol. It contained a simple message spoken just before the sergeant died.

... once were brothers will fall beneath my gaze. The Corpse Emperor will not protect you now. Blood for the Blood God...
