Group-based Assignment This assignment is worth 30% of the final mark for LOG207 Warehousing & Material Handling. The cut-off date for this assignment is 9 April 2012, 2359hrs. This is a group-based assignment. You should form a group of 3 members from your seminar group. Each group is required to upload a single report to MyUniSIM via your respective seminar group. Please elect a group leader. The responsibility of the group leader is to upload the report on behalf of the group. It is important for each group member to contribute substantially to the final submitted work. All group members are equally responsible for the entire submitted assignment. If you feel that the work distribution is inequitable to either yourself or your group mates, please highlight this to your instructor as soon as possible. Your instructor will then investigate and decide on any action that needs to be taken. The Company The SERIOUS Group Limited, a large grocery retail distributor, serves many customer locations throughout Singapore. These customer locations are either retail stores or small warehouses that hold a wide variety of products. The demand profile of these customers is shown in Table 1. From the start of their business in 1990 until 2010, the SERIOUS Group Limited has grown from S$1 m to S$2.3 m company. It recently acquired a 900 m2 private warehouse located at the western part of the island in Tuas. The SERIOUS Group Limited has now engaged your team as its warehouse consultant.

Question 1 Design the warehouse layout and the material flow for this warehouse. State all assumptions used to design the warehouse layout and the material flow. You need to justify these assumptions. (Hint: Study Table 1, and use popularity profiling and other considerations for your design). (40 marks)

Question 2 Plan the number of dock doors and the labour resources needed for your private warehouse. (Hint: You may need to do a literature search to obtain the relevant information to support your calculation. Submit them together with the solutions.) (20 marks)

Question 3 Recommend to the management of SERIOUS Group Limited the security and safety measures that should be in place for this private warehouse. (20 marks)

Question 4 Recommend the type of material handling equipment for this warehouse, based on the type of products stored (Table 1). You would need to provide relevant information and justification to support your recommendation. (20 marks)
