CONNECT
IACAC Annual
Conference Program
May 24, 2012
The Westin Chicago Northwest
1
Welcome to Connect 2012
IACAC Annual Conference.
It is with much excitement that I welcome you to Connect 2012. For almost a year, the
Annual Conference Committee has been working hard to provide a conference that will
allow you to share stories and leave making many connections. IACAC has many benefits,
and I fully believe the biggest one is the opportunity to develop a strong network of
colleagues. I invite you to introduce yourself to someone new; to share your story; and to
leave having made at least one new connection. I will promise you that by doing this, you
will not only broaden your own professional background, but your efforts will allow you
to better serve the students you work with each day.
Take advantage of all that the conference offers including:
56 sessions encompassing all areas within college counseling and admissions
Special opportunity to connect on Friday morning through the Connections Sessions
More than 20 exhibitors showcasing how they can assist in working with students
A special welcome for all who are new to the IACAC Annual Conference at the
First Timers Luncheon as well as continuing the tradition of honoring our retirees.
An opportunity to give back by just dining out on Wednesday night; choose to dine at
either the The Ram or Sweet Baby Rays and you will be helping in giving money back
to Project Reach.
The opportunity to connect for free to wi-fi (both in the hotel rooms and Atrium
of the hotel)
Some exciting entertainment options both on Wednesday and Thursday evening
The Annual Membership meeting on Thursday morning where you have the right
to share your opinion and vote in regards to the future direction of IACAC
And so much more
I would like to say a special thank you to our sponsors and advertisers. Your support truly
allows IACAC to give back more to all members.
Finally, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to the Annual Conference Committee. I have
always heard at previous conferences from the President-Elects how the committee has
played such a huge role in the conference. I have to say that I am truly fortunate to have the
chance to work with this group of individuals. They are true examples of how to give back
to IACAC. If you have the chance to visit with them, please join me in saying thanks.
As I mentioned last year during my President-Elect speech, the Annual Conference is your
opportunity to share your story and connect with so many others who all share a common
goal in helping students. I truly hope you leave the conference having made many new
connections.
Take care,
Todd Burrell

Project Reach
In its forth year, this service project has been embraced by the IACAC membership as a means
to touch the lives of deserving students through the donation of school supplies and college
counseling items to an Illinois high school in need.
On May 13th, 2001 fourteen community residents of Little Village, in the South Lawndale
neighborhood, staged a nineteen day hunger strike demanding the construction of a new high
school. The high school had been promised, but was put on hold for monetary issues. Almost
four years later the Little Village Lawndale High School Campus opened its doors to four
hundred students in the fall of 2005. The campus is comprised of four autonomous small
schools: Multicultural Arts H.S., World Language H.S., Social Justice H.S., and Infinity: Math,
Science, and Technology High School. Each school has its own principal and teaching staff. Each
school houses approximately 385 to 400 students from the neighborhoods of North Lawndale
and Little Village. Its learning communities are specific to each theme of the school, but some
facilities are shared. Thus, students get the advantage of a tight-knit school environment without
sacrificing the advantages of a larger facility. The architectural structure of the campus has won
numerous awards, and has been replicated in other parts of the country. Students from every
school participate in the same sports and after school activities. All four schools are public,
neighborhood schools, open to every student within the boundary area. Many have worked
arduously to ensure that students in the Little Village neighborhood have access to quality
education and Project Reach is thrilled to announce Little Village Lawndale High School as
this years deserving recipient.
