1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is designed to help students learn about the how and why explorers have traveled the world. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Americas Past (p. 222-225) 2. Target Population: 2nd Grade This lesson is designed for learners at all levels. Whole group reading & discussions, independent notes and assessment 3. Objectives: H1.2.3. Tell why important events, people, and/or customs are marked by holidays.

4. Procedure: 1. Refer to TE notes on page 222, Get Set to Read. Ask students to preview the photographs and tell what they think the lesson will be about. Look at the main idea and details chart students will complete as we read. (page 66).

2. Read about Christopher Columbus (page 224-225) as a class. Ask questions like, What did Christopher Columbus want to do? Columbus thought he reached Asia, but where had he really gone? What does the map on page 224 show?

3. Introduce vocabulary (explorer, journey). 4. Instruct students to pick a place on the globe that they would like to travel to one day. Have them create an illustration of what it would be like in this new place, and how they would get there. 5. Assessment: In small groups, students will write down one fact they learned about todays lesson. They will also be instructed to write something they learned about Christopher Columbus or Marco Polo. Students will then quiz each other on their facts. 6. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson?

Students need to actively engage in answering questions and participating in discussion.

How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would use Extend the Lesson about the magnetic compass on page 226

What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I could re-teach the mini lesson for them and work one on one with them on their compare and contrast sheet.

Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? I can see students visiting with their friends during the quiz session so I would have to monitor this activity closely.
