Title of Unit: Where We Live Title of Lesson: The Earth: Vocabulary Preview

Lesson Plan # 2 out of 5

1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson builds off of Where We Live Day 1, but focuses more on vocabulary. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Teachers Edition (pages 72-73). 2. Target Population: 1st Grade This lesson is designed for all learning levels Whole group, partners, independent.

3. Objectives: G.5.1.1. Differentiate between and identify water and land on a map and globe and use the terms ocean and continent. 4. Procedure: 1. Vocabulary Preview on page 72. -Go over each picture and discuss what it means with students -Use vocabulary cards for extra practice on page TR40. 2. Create a KWL Chart -Students will fill in information that they learned yesterday. -They can then fill in what they want to know, and will leave the what they have learned part blank until the end of the unit. 3. Have students predict and infer about the lessons they are about to read. -Read the title to students and ask them to make predictions. -Ask students to infer about what the pictures and graphs in the lessons mean. 4. Summarize the lessons. -Instruct students to think about the main ideas of the text. -Have students think about the important parts of what they read and write them down. -Students who are lower level may draw pictures to represent what they saw. 5. Assessment: I will assess students based on their summaries of the text. I will also observe students while they are quizzing each other on their vocabulary cards.

6. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? -They need to have paid attention to the lesson in class yesterday

How will you follow up or extend this lesson? -I will follow up by having students fill in their what I learned portion of the KWL chart the next day.

What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? -For struggling students I would have them point to each vocabulary word as I am saying it. I would also have them work with a study buddy. -For more advanced students I would have them locate North America on the map.

Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? -I think that I would have to very carefully monitor students during partner work because otherwise they would definitely be off task.

7. Materials: Houghton Mifflin Teachers Edition (pages 72-73). Vocabulary Cards (TR40). Paper, pencil, markers.
