WORLDPRIDE 2014 STRATEGIC PLAN 3
LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIRS
It has been so exciting putting together this Strategic Plan for WorldPride 2014
Toronto. In any year, our Pride Festival ranks as one of the largest and most diverse
in the world. But in 2014, we will truly emerge on the world stage as one of
the best destinations for LGBTTIQQ2SA travellers on the planet. Revellers, activ-
ists, artists, community groups, entertainers, academics, sexual outlaws, gender
non-conformists and spectators will ll our streets. They will experience the best we
have to showcase in Toronto and Canada, from our progressive human rights, to
our distinct culture and the liveability of our country, of which we are so proud.
Back in October 2009, Pride Toronto won the bid to host the 2014 WorldPride
celebration, the rst ever to be held in North America. WorldPride is licensed by
InterPride, the international association of Pride organizations. When we host the
4th WorldPride here in Toronto, we will follow in the footsteps of Rome (2000),
Jerusalem (2006) and London (2012).
Following our victorious bid, a number of community consultations were held to
gather a wish list for this event. Since then a dedicated group of volunteers and
Pride Toronto Board members and staff formed the WorldPride 2014 Planning
Committee and worked tirelessly to develop this Strategic Plan. We thank every-
one who has contributed to this process so far.
We look forward to sharing our vision with our community, our partners in tour-
ism and the business sectors, our cultural groups, the education sector and our
wonderful funders and sponsors. We hope to engage and excite everyone, and
gather feedback to ensure we get this right. We would like to see our efforts
supplemented by creative programming across the Greater Toronto Area in
2014. We also want to engage our friends across Canada to participate. Well
all need to work together to make this happen, and we welcome everyones
ideas and input because together, we will deliver the best WorldPride ever!

Sincerely,
Francisco Alvarez Luka Amona

WORLDPRIDE 2014 STRATEGIC PLAN 5
PRIDE TORONTO
Pride Toronto is the not-for-prot organization that produces the Pride festival, a ten-
day annual event in downtown Toronto, which takes place each year during the
last week of June and rst week in July. The Pride Festival is one of the premier arts
and cultural festivals in Canada. It is also one of the largest Pride celebrations in
the world with an estimated attendance of over 1.2 million people. It is a volun-
teer-driven, community-based organization, composed of a volunteer Board of
Directors, Volunteer Teams, Weekend Volunteers and Staff. Each of these elements
is rooted back to the community via the general membership. They each work on
separate but overlapping components of the Pride Festival and together, produce
one of the worlds three largest celebrations of queer expression.
The Pride Festival is one of only ten ofcially designated City of Toronto Signa-
ture Events and from 2004-2007 was awarded one of the Top 50 Festivals
in Ontario (FEO), as well as the Best Festival in Canada award by Canadian
Special Event Industry for the last three years. The Pride Festival celebrates our
diverse sexual and gender identities, histories, cultures, creativities, families,
friends and lives. It includes a three-day arts festival with multiple entertainment
stages, a weekend street fair (including a community fair and market place with
food vendors), a Trans March, a Dyke March and a Pride Parade.
Pride Toronto employs ve year-round staff, as well as a number of contract
staff to produce the festival. We rely on the leadership and energy of
hundreds of volunteers to make this enormous event happen each year. For
the past decade, the Pride Festival has grown substantially into a world-class,
marquee festival. The Pride Festival has grown to draw over one million
participants over three days of outdoor programming in downtown Toronto.
Nearly 25% of these participants are traveling from further than 80 km to be
a part of the celebration. Drawn by a sense of community, inclusion, fabulous
artists and performances, parades and marches, cultural marketplace, artisan
vendors, a safe and comfortable visitor experience, or to take in the many
other attractions that Toronto and Ontario has to offer, The Pride Festival in
Toronto has certainly become a tourist destination.
6 WORLDPRIDE 2014 STRATEGIC PLAN
GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE
WorldPride will be delivered using Pride Torontos organizational structure. The
Board will from time to time evaluate and approve any changes required to the
structure to ensure optimal organizational capacity for the festival.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND BOARD COMMITTEES
Pride Torontos Board of Directors is elected by the membership at the Annual Gen-
eral Meeting (AGM) and is accountable to the membership for good governance
and stewardship of the organization. It is responsible for the legal, nancial, and
overall well being of the organization and the annual festival. It has leadership for
the organizations overall governance, including the development of policies and
procedures, development of strategic vision and long-term planning, all contractual
relationships and all partnerships. Members of the board are elected to serve a
term of three years. Board Committees are made up of directors and non-directors
and assist the Board in delivering its functions through research, policy development
and recommendations. The WorldPride Committee is one of the committees of the
Board and also includes community representation.
STAFF
Led by the Executive Director, members of staff are responsible for running the
organization in line with the Boards strategic direction and governing policies
and procedures. Members of staff work to support the organizations long-term
growth and sustainability, as well as work annually with Pride Torontos Festival
Teams to produce the festival.
VOLUNTEER FESTIVAL TEAMS TEAM LEADS AND TEAM MEMBERS
Pride Torontos 19 Volunteer Festival Teams are responsible for producing the
actual festival by focusing on one of its main components. Teams are composed of
two or three Team Leads and several Team Members. Team Members commit to a
one festival year term on the Team and agree to work together to accomplish their
goals. Team Leads commit to a two festival year term, are responsible for leading
the work of the Team, and work closely with other Team Leads, the Executive
Director and Staff to ensure the successful delivery of the festival.
VOLUNTEER ADVISORS
Pride Toronto has a number of advisor positions that work directly with staff to
provide advice and assistance on a number of issues. Advisors commit to volun-
teering in that capacity for one Festival year.
WEEKEND VOLUNTEERS
Weekend Volunteers dedicate four hours or more to a specic volunteer shift
during the weekend of the festival. They are recruited, oriented, and scheduled
by the Weekend Volunteer Team with the support of the Volunteer Program
Manager. Each year more than 1,000 weekend volunteers assist Pride
Toronto in delivering one of the largest Pride festivals in the world.
