Brittany McNure ENGL 1102 NN March 22, 2012 Annotated List of Works Cited "Benefits of Greek Life.

" Georgia Southern University. Georgia Southern University, 2012. Web. 18 Mar. 2012. This source comes from Georgia Southerns Greek life page and is supporting Greek life to all who view this page. There are many reasons the source lists as benefits of going Greek. These reasons include academic support and excellence, service to the community, leadership and personal development, lifelong friends and community building, social activities, and networking. The goal of this source is to provide information on why is it a good thing to be a part of and active in the Greek system. This is a good source because it is from the Georgia Southern website and is centered on the Greek system of which my subculture is a part. This is a reliable source because it is on the universitys website. However, it is subjective because it is totally in favor of joining in with Greek life. This source wants you to see the benefits of being a part of a nationwide system of networking and ultimately lifelong friendships. meLOLhouse.Sh*t Sorority Girls Say. Youtube. Google, 17 January 2012. Web. 14 Mar. 2012. This source is found on Youtube. It is a video of a man doing a sorority girl impersonation. It is showing the different stereotypes of sorority girls. The things he includes in the video involve the certain lingo of sorority girls and the typical actions associated with the stereotypical sorority girl. I

believe this is a useful source because it shows the stereotypes that most outsiders probably assume on all sorority girls. This makes the video very subjective. The information is not necessarily reliable because it is just the view of the maker of the video, but with that being said it shows the view of an outsider. The goal of this source is pure comedy. It makes fun of the ways and things most sorority girls are perceived to act like. I believe it is a good source because it shows different stereotypes and can be used to discuss the truths behind these stereotypes. "Phi Mu - Kappa Mu Chapter at Georgia Southern University." Phi Mu. Kappa Mu Chapter of Phi Mu, 2010. Web. 19 Mar. 2012. This source is the website for the Kappa Mu chapter of Phi Mu at Georgia Southern University. This source is different from the national Phi Mu website in that it is individualized for the chapter at Georgia Southern. The point of this website is to give information about recruitment, philanthropy, and other activities the Kappa Mu chapter is involved in. Some topics discussed on this website include Phi Mus philanthropy, awards and honors the Kappa Mu chapter has received, socials and events the chapter is involved in, and information about recruitment. This source is a very good reference for my subculture because it is the subcultures own website. It shows all the things that Phi Mus at Georgia Southern are involved in and why you would want to be one there. This source is subjective because it is again obviously in favor of being a Phi Mu and being a part of Greek life. The goal of this source is to provide information to potential new members, who are wanting to learn more about what being a Phi Mu at Georgia Southern means.

Phi Mu Vibrant. National Headquarters, 2010. Web. 19 Mar. 2012. This source is the national website for Phi Mu fraternity. It is accessible through the internet for all Phi Mus and people interested in learning more about Phi Mu. There is a homepage which discusses recent events in different Phi Mu chapters. There is also an about us section which includes information on topics such as: Our organization at a Glance, Our Mission and Creed, Phi Mu Member Experience, For Parents, Phi Mu Office, Staff, and Consultants, Events, and Partnerships. These different topics give a generalized background of nationwide history and ideals that Phi Mu Fraternity holds. It gives information for members and people seeking membership. This source discusses the philanthropy of Phi Mu, which is Childrens Miracle Network, and the benefits of being associated with this organization. The website gives an overview of Phi Mu, instead of an individualized chapter look. The source is biased because it is the national website site for Phi Mu. Therefore, it is obviously in favor of sororities and sisterhood. However, it is a very good source to use because it gives all the background and ideals of Phi Mus and why being a Phi Mu is beneficial. The goal of this source is ultimately to provide information to members and nonmembers about Phi Mu Fraternity.

Risman, Barbara. "College Women and Sororities: The Social Construction and Reaffirmation of Gender Roles." Journal of Contemporary Ethnography. 11.2 (1982): 231-250. Web. 14 Mar. 2012. This is an article found in an online forum that uses ethnographic techniques to study the differences in human behaviors. The online forum is called Journal of Contemporary Ethnography. The article is written about how girls associated with sororities start to take on certain gender roles. The argument that sororities socialize mostly within their

own sorority is introduced in the beginning of the article. This is used to show that certain status sororities only date within status fraternities, constricting the dating pool. It says that being in a sorority gives the women priority to their sorority, a new self-identification, and sets them on the site of working on a MRS. Degree. This is a very useful source. It covers many of the topics I said I wanted to discuss in the positioning paper. These topics include sororities not associating much with non-Greek students, certain stereotypes, and the gender role issue of only looking for a MRS. Degree. The source has an objective view and gives us details of the research that was found through studying the sorority. The source shows how sororities do, in a way, change the life of the member. If this is a good or bad thing is in the hands of the audience or reader. Wells, Brett, and Daniel P. Corts. "Measuring Attitudes Towards Sorority and Fraternity Members: Indication of Implicit, Ingroup Favoritism." College Student Journal 842-846 42.3 (2008). Discovery Service Beta. Web. 19 Mar. 2012. This source was about a study that was done on a group of Greek and non-Greek students. These students completed tests used to measure attitudes toward people in sororities and fraternities. The main argument made was that people in sororities and fraternities have positive feelings towards Greek organizations over other kinds of organizations. The study also showed that non-Greek students had bad feelings towards members of the Greek system, siding more with service and academic groups. This source shows how a real group of students become separated on views because of being Greek or not. It is a very reliable source and gives references to all of its findings. The source seems to be objective since it was a study conducted with set rules and is just

stating what was found from the research. The sources main purpose is to discuss the gap in how people perceive things due to their involvement or lack of involvement in Greek life.
