At what minimum speed must a roller coaster be traveling when upside down at the top of a circle so that the passengers do not fall out? Assume a radius of curvature r. 2. A piano with mass m slides down l m down a theta incline and is kept from accelerating by a man who is pushing back on it parallel to the incline. Determine: (a) the force exerted by the man, (b) the work done by the man on the piano, (c) the work done by the force of gravity, and (d) the new work done on the piano. Ignore friction. 3. A grocery cart with a mass m is being pushed at a constant speed up a flat theta1 ramp by a force Fp which acts at an angle of theta2 below the horizontal. Find the work done by each of the forces (mg, Fn, Fp) on the cart if the ramp is l meters long. 4. A block of mass m is being pushed l meters up a smooth theta degrees inclined plane by a horizontal force of N. If the initial speed of the block is v0, calculate the: (a) the initial kinetic energy of the block, (b) the work done by the horizontal force, (c) the work done by gravity, (d) the work done by the normal force, (e) the kinetic energy of the block. 5. A vertical spring with spring constant k is attached to a table and is compressed down by length l. (a) What upward speed can it give to a ball with mass m when released? (b) How high above its original position (spring compressed) will the ball fly? 6. A block with mass m slides long a horixontal surface with a coefficient of kinetic friction k. The block has speed v when it strikes a massless spring head on. (a) If the spring has force constant k, how far is the spring compressed? (b) What minimum value of the coefficient of static friction, s, will assure that the spring remains compressed at the maximum compressed position? (c) If the s is less than this, what is the speed of the block when it detaches from the decompressing spring? [Hint: detachment occurs when the spring reaches its natural length (x=0)] 7. Show that on a roller coaster with a circular vertical loop, the diference in your apparent weight at the top of the loop and the bottom of the loop is 6gs i.e. six times your weight. Ignore friction. Show also that as long as your speed is above the minimum needed, the answer doesnt depend on the size of the loop or how fast you go through it. 8. The small mass m sliding without friction along the looped track is to remain on the track at all times, even at the very top of the loop of radius r. (a) In terms of the given quantities, determine the minimum release height h. Next if the actual release height is 2h, calculate the normal force exerted (b) by the track at the bottom of the loop, (c) by the track at the top of the loop, and (d) by the track after the block exits the loop onto the flat section. 9. An object at rest is suddenly broken apart into two fragments by an explosion. One fragment acquires twice the kinetic energy of the other. What is the ration of their masses? 10. A projectile with mass m is fired with a speed of v at a angle theta, and breaks into three pieces of equal mass at the highest points of its arc (where its velocity is horizontal). Two of the fragments move with the same speed right after the explosion as the entire projectile had just
before the explosion; one of these moves vertically downward and the other horizontally. Determine (a) the velocity of the third fragment immediately after the explosion and (b) the energy released in the explosion. 11. A ball of mass m that is moving with a speed of v collides head-on and elastically with another ball initially at rest. Immediately after the collision, the incoming ball bounces backwards with a speed of v1. Calculate (a) the velocity of the target ball after the collision, and (b) the mass of the target ball. 12. Two astronauts, one of mass m1 and the other of mass m2, are initially at rest in outer space. They push each other apart. How far apart are they when the lighter astronaut has moved length l?
