Syllabus for Ph.D. entrance test (Civil-Structural Engineering)
Mechanics: Bending moment and shear force in statically determinate beams. Simple stress
and strain relationship. Stress and strain in two dimensions, principal stresses, stress
transformation, Mohr's circle. Simple bending theory, flexural and shear stresses,
unsymmetrical bending, shear centre. Thin walled pressure vessels, uniform torsion, buckling
of column, combined and direct bending stresses.
Structural Analysis: Analysis of statically determinate trusses, arches, beams, cables and
frames, displacements in statically determinate structures and analysis of statically
indeterminate structures by force/energy methods, analysis by displacement methods (slope
deflection and moment distribution methods), influence lines for determinate and
indeterminate structures. Basic concepts of matrix methods of structural analysis. Symmetry
considerations in structures. Approximate methods (cantilever, portal and substitute frame
method).
Structural Dynamics: Dynamic loads, degrees-of-freedom, Mathematical modeling,
Resonance, fundamental frequency, damping, types of vibrations, natural frequency,
responses of buildings to different types of vibrations like free and forced, damped and

1. Environmental Chemistry 8 Biology: Chemicals and microbes present in water and waste
water as pollutants. Characteristics, sampling and analysis of such samples/species in water
(viz. TS, TDS, BOD, COD, NH3, pH, etc.) air (SPM, RSPM, NOx, SOx, Cl2, HCl, etc.) and
solid waste. Effects of various pollutants on human beings, flora and fauna and environment
in general. Global warming and climate change.

2. Water and waste water treatment: Physical, chemical and biological treatment methods.
Primary, secondary and tertiary treatment of waste water (industrial and sewage).
Fundamentals of treatment processes and their design aspects for above stated treatments
steps, e.g., screening, equalization, settling and clarification, activated sludge processes and
other biological techniques, activated carbon and other tertiary treatments. Advanced waste
water treatment.
3. Treatment of sludge and solid waste: Concentration of sludge, classification of solid wastes,
stabilization of solid waste using physical, chemical and biological methods. Disposal
methods.

measurement of air pollutants in various types of emissions and ambient air. Fundamentals

control criteria and techniques.
6. Miscellaneous: Hazardous waste management and risk assessment: Types of hazardous
