Leading Bold Change

Welcome Note
Welcome to Leading Bold Change The world leading change experience that offers something different. For one thing, no other programme is based on a story about penguins! Since its publication in 1996, the best-selling book Leading Change by John P. Kotter has been recognised world-wide as providing the definitive road map for cultural change. However most managers and corporate leaders have little time for in-depth reading, so what was needed was a quick read that commanded attention and jumpstarted actionable incentives. Enter Our Iceberg is Melting by John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber, a book which puts the eight vital steps of successful change within the readers grasp in the form of a simple, funny, endearing fable about penguins stranded on a melting iceberg.

Penguinising the Training

Why are we using the iceberg story as the basis for this change experience? Well, because of the feedback received about how individuals, teams and entire companies have already used the tale as a basis for significant change. In listening to peoples comments, we have learned that the power of the penguin story is its ability to engage people quickly by reducing complicated ideas about corporate change to a simple and enjoyable language. It is a proven strategy that works immediately. When people read the story, it makes them smile. More importantly, it makes them nod their heads in recognition of its application to where they work. Its easy, its enjoyable and its instantaneous. This Leading Bold Change workshop is based on John Kotter and Holger Rathgebers story about penguins because it has the power to engage the minds and hearts of people. The penguinising process provides a kind of shorthand of simple vocal responses for complicated concepts; promotes fun, one of the keys to adult learning; dispels the burden of learning and makes integration of principles effortless and automatic.

The ability to engage people quickly.

Leading Change Process

8 Steps of Leading Change Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Step 5: Step 6: Step 7: Step 8: Act with urgency Develop the guiding team Develop a change vision Communicate the vision buy-in Empower broad-based action Generate short-term wins Dont let up Make change stick

30 years of research by leadership expert John Kotter have proven that 70% of all major change efforts in organisations fail. Why do they fail? Because organisations often do not take the holistic approach required to see the change through. However, by following the 8 Step Process outlined by John Kotter, organisations can avoid failure and become adept at change. By improving their ability to change, organisations can increase their chances of success, both today and in the future. Without this ability to adapt continuously, organisations cannot thrive. John Kotter has proven over his years of research that following this 8 Step Process will help organisations succeed in an ever-changing world. Create a sense of urgency today and act. Leading Bold Change will enhance your chances of success immediately.

Leading Bold Change Application Workshop

builD ional anisat y org ilit capab ing aD For le ge cHan

Delivered over 1 or 2 days, the Leading Bold Change Application Workshop is an interactive workshop experience that enables leaders at all levels to lead change through Harvard Professor John Kotters 8 Steps. The experience connects the heart of those who must embrace and lead change today with the mindset necessary to ensure future success. This is the workshop to create leaders at all levels capable of identifying and creating change.

Workshop Audience Our goal was to create a programme that was versatile enough to accommodate two different types of audiences 1. Individuals with, or without, a defined responsibility for a specific change 2. Teams that are going to be responsible for implementing a specific change initiative

Workshop Outcomes
Understand the characteristics for leading change Understand the importance of leaders at all levels Learn from, and provide insights to, participants Understand the forces that affect successful change Assess the organisations efforts to deal with change Identify factors that need changing Create a visual map of the current organisational state Complete a gap assessment to identify gaps for change readiness Complete an action plan that guides decision making and provides both a record of intentions back in the workplace

Workshop Process
The workshop experience involves individual reflection, group processing and individual and team-based decision making. Because of the strong impact of visual stimuli in helping the brain to process and remember concepts and ideas, graphic representations are emphasised in both training room dcor and while envisioning the change effort. Participants work in teams and learn the 8 step change model backwards and forwards. Teams create presentations that show the links between the steps and illustrate them with examples. The process starts with pre-work. This includes reading Our Iceberg is Melting and completing an online assignment that helps participants to consider a real change effort they will be involved in. The importance of this step cannot be overstated. Next, participants view a macro-level exploration of change and how it affects their organisation. From this vantage point, the need to embrace and lead change is reinforced. Finally, these macro-level changes are reviewed to see how they contribute to fissures that indicate a need for change at all levels within the organisation. With a need for change identified, the context is set for developing change leaders at all levels. Interestingly, participants agree that the Antarctic penguins from the story tend to have many similarities to humans in their own organisations especially when it relates to their reaction to change. The workshop leverages the iceberg metaphor when needed to help participants get past frequently uncomfortable issues.

You have done a marvellous job of listening to us, hearing our objectives, understanding our project and our group, and adapting the workshop to truly meet our specific needs.

Our Iceberg is Melting

New York Times Best Seller
By John Kotter & Holger Rathgeber RRP: 9.99 Our Iceberg is Melting is a simple fable with profound lessons for working and living in an ever changing world. The story is about a colony of emperor penguins in Antarctica who have lived as a group for many years. Then one curious penguin discovers a potentially devastating problem threatening their home and pretty much no one listens to him. The characters in the story, Fred, Alice, Louis, Buddy, the Professor and NoNo, are like people we know even ourselves. Their story is one of resistance to change and heroic action, confusion and insight, seemingly intractable obstacles and the most clever tactics for dealing with their challenges. Its a story that is occurring in different forms all around us today but the penguins handle the very real challenges a great deal better than most of us. The lessons you can draw from this short and easy-to-read book will serve you well on the job, in your family, and in your community. Based on John Kotters pioneering work on how to make smart change happen faster and better, the book provides invaluable guidance no matter whether you live at the top of an organisation or the bottom. These lessons are becoming ever more important as the world around us changes faster and faster and faster. By improving their ability to change, organisations can increase their chances of success, both today and in the future. Without this ability to adapt continuously, organisations cannot thrive.
